Pop soul from the Alessi brothers – bright, upbeat and glossy groovers that sound sweeter that we would have imagined all these years – with tight songcraft, hooks you can't shake if you try, and played by some all star musicians - Larry Carlton, Tom Scott, Ernie Watts, Lenny Castro and more! Christopher Cross is also on the album, and he blew up pretty big for a little while around this time, and Long Time Friends are just as unshakable as his huge hit! Titles include "Jagged Edge", "I'm Gonna Tell Her Tonight", "How Long, How Much", "Still In Love", "Forever", "Long Time Friends" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
Notable sidemen include Julius Watkins on French horn, Les Spann on guitar and flute, Phil Woods and Sahib Shihab on saxophones, Melba Liston on trombones, and Clark Terry on trumpet. CD

Quincy Jones/Sammy Nestico Orchestra —
Basie & Beyond ... CD Qwest/Warner, 2000. Used ...
Out Of Stock
Great old school sounds from Quincy Jones – the kind of smoking big band album we'd know from his early years on ABC or Mercury Records! The Q's done many great things in the years since those albums – including great work in the soul music and soundtrack fields – but it's great to know he can still turn out a jazz cooker like this when he wants – thanks in part to great help as a co-leader from reedman Sammy Nestico! The horns are totally tight – that great old Quincy way of coming on strong, then letting individual voices break out of the pack – and players include Ernie Watts, Gerald Albright, and Gary Foster on saxes; Oscar Brashear and Wane Bergeron on trumpets; George Bohannon and Bill Watrous on trombones – all great players who really make the record kick. The set also features guest solo work by Hubert Laws on flute, and Kirk Whalum on tenor and soprano sax – and Emil Richards even turns in a bit of vibes, too. Titles include "Grace", "Jelly Roll", "The Joy Of Cookin", "Ya Gotta Try Harder", "Lisett", and "No Time Like The Present". CD
New Order, working amidst the generation they inspired – from the darker tones of later alt-rock, to some of the sunnier, clubbier styles of the Acid House generation! The latter are definitely played to here – especially given that some of the album was recorded in Ibiza – but as usual, New Order's blend of dancefloor energy is still a cut above most – catchy on one hand, yet never too clunky either – despite a definite love of more forceful beats that definitely marks their groove this time around. Titles include "Dream Attack", "Fine Time", "Love Less", "Round & Round", "Run", "Mr Disco", and "Vanishing Point". CD

Dreamboy —
Dreamboy ... LP Qwest, 1983. Sealed ...
Out Of Stock
Jaunty pop soul from Dreamboy – a group who almost seem to be going for Jacksons-like crossover appeal on this early 80s "mini album"! (What ever happened to that format anyway? Seemed to pop up a bit in 1983, then quickly disappeared.) The upbeat tunes are chunky/funky in a bottom-bass way – almost an echo of Rick James, and some of the more commercial soul over at Motown – but the ballads are a bit gentler, and showcase a warmer harmony side of the group that we'd like to hear more of. 6 titles in all – including "Don't Go", "Let's Go Out", "Slow Down", "Walk The Streets", "Get Off", and "I Want To Know Your Name". LP, Vinyl record album
A stunning little record – and one that still chills us to the bone after all these years! The set's the first (and one of the few) from Joy Division – and really set a whole new standard for the post-punk underground – thanks partly to the group's brooding sense of darkness, but also to the brilliant production from Martin Hannett – who uses slight bits of electronics to augment the group's stark guitars and Ian Curtis' moody vocals. The whole thing's a classic – and titles include "Disorder", "She's Lost Control", "New Dawn Fades", "Interzone", and "I Remember Nothing". CD
The steely cover's an apt one – as New Order have still largely held onto their edge here – those raspy guitars and moodier moments that first marked their early work – all elements that keep things compelling amidst some of the more tuneful moments of the songs! There's definitely a lot more hooks than before, but most tracks are still pretty far from commercial pop – and if anything, showcase the preference for darker sounds that would mark the alt rock underground that was springing up in the US, clearly a generation inspired by New Order's initial experiments. Titles include "All Day Long", "Weirdo", "Paradise", "State Of The Nation", "Angel Dust", "Every Little Counts", and "As It Is When It Was". Cassette
