John CapouyaFlorida Soul – From Ray Charles To KC & The Sunshine Band (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Florida Press, 2017. New Copy ... $18.99 24.95
A long-overdue look at the soul scene in Florida – 60s and 70s music from the Sunshine State that sometimes never gets the proper placement as sounds from northern locales like Philly or Detroit – but which was every bit as important over the years! Author John Capouya does a really great job here – as the book is huge, and filled with information that Capouya pulled together from interviews with a number of key singers and musicians – then layered with a lot more historical detail that really illuminates the different local scenes in Florida, as does the wealth of great photos in the book as well – images not just of soul singers, but also clubs, streets, and even record companies too. Chapters focus on key artists – James & Bobby Purify, Ray Charles, Sam & Dave, Jackie Moore, Latimore, Timmy Thomas, and others – but there's also plenty more in between their stories, in a way that really gets at the nature of the changes over the years, and the unique musical culture that was brewing up down south. 396 pages, hardcover, with lots of great black and white photos, and very detailed notes as well. Sean EganDavid Bowie – Ever Changing Hero (hardcover) ... Book
Flametree (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $6.99 15.99
A book that definitely lives up to its title – as the range of photographs inside certainly show the ever-changing style of the legendary David Bowie! The book's more of a photo book than a proper biography – although it does have some history alongside the images – and many of the photos take up a full page, and include a huge amount of David Bowie concert shots that we haven't seen before – from the 70s onwards – plus some other posed shots, a number of which get past the more iconic, more familiar images. The book is full color throughout, hardcover, and is 128 pages in all. Book
