Rudy Ray MooreDolemite For President ... LP
Kent, 1972. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Rudy Ray Moore takes the White House – or at least tries to – in this cool 1972 album that must have been a great antidote to the campaigns of Richard Nixon and George McGovern! The set starts with Rudy running his way through a whole bunch of campaign issues – including "Free Love" and "Mary Wanna" – all delivered in faux politico mode, with a crowd cheering him on, and an introduction that features music from "Exodus"! The rest of the set is a bit more typical Dolemite material – almost even more raunchy than the presidential mode – and other titles include "Dance Of The Freaks", "Bulldaggers", "Good Pussy Lil", and "Sit In Your Mama's Lap". Language is raw – so be warned! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing.)

✨✧ Lester YoungPresident Lester Young ... LP
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Early Verve work from Lester Young – recorded in a setting that features 2 different groups: one with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Barney Kessel, and JC Heard; the other with John Lewis, Joe Schulman, and Bill Clark. The sound is mellow and soulful throughout – a perfect summation of Young's small-group genius, recorded in the easygoing Norman Granz style that was so groundbreaking at the time. Titles include "Pete's Cafe", "Count Every Star", "Stardust", "I'm Confessin", "These Foolish Things", and "Lester Swings". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lester YoungPresident Plays With The Oscar Peterson Trio ... LP
Verve, 1952. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Lester Young joins the Oscar Peterson trio – and the result is a classic meeting of the minds from early 50s Verve! Young's tone is tremendous throughout – that sharp-yet-cool style that had such a big influence on other 50s players, and which gets some great support here from Peterson's group, which also features guest guitar from Barney Kessel. Oscar's piano lines are a bit more forceful than usual – possibly because of the presence of Prez – and titles include "I Can't Get Started", "Ad Lib Blues", "Just You, Just Me", and "Almost Like Being In Love". ✨✧ James BrownSolid Gold – 30 Golden Hits ... LP
Polygram, 1960s/1970s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99
Sure, it's a greatest hits set – but it's a damn good one! This 2LP set was always an essential part of our crates back in the 80s, because it includes an excellent range of James Brown work from the 60s and 70s – including a number of strong funky cuts, presented here in the original single versions. Titles include "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", "There Was A Time", "I Got The Feelin", "Mother Popcorn", "Sex Machine", "Make It Funky", "Talkin Loud & Sayin Nothin", "Payback", "Get On The Good Foot", "My Thang", "Papa Don't Take No Mess", and "Funky President". MatataIndependence ... LP
Makossa, 1974. Near Mint- ... $28.99
Funky soul, but with deeper roots too – a killer set from Matata – a group from Kenya, but one who arrived on the London scene in the 70s – where their blend of African roots and American soul really took the group by storm! There's a fantastic influence here from James Brown – not just on the vocals, which have a raw, shouting, completely soulful style – but also on the rhythms and instrumentation – which have this sharp riffing guitar with the bass, ala James Brown Band of the late 60s – topped with equally great horn work to match! The whole thing's fantastic – as appealing to a fan of American early 70s funk as one of 70s African grooves – and titles include "I Wanna Do My Thing", "Return To You", "Getting Together", "I Believed Her", "I Don't Have To Worry", "I Want You", "Love Is The Only Way", "Gimme Some Lovin", and the classic "Talking Talking". LP, Vinyl record album

Oliver NelsonKennedy Dream – A Musical Tribute To John F Kennedy ... LP
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $8.99
A great little album – a lot better than you might think from the concept! After the death of JFK, Oliver Nelson penned this extremely strong tribute to the man – featuring snippets of speeches made by Kennedy during his time in office as president, used as bridges between jazz based backings by Nelson that are filled with some of his strongest writing of the time. The notes are more devoted to Kennedy's memory and Nelson's genius than the usual liner notes – so we're not sure who the players are – but the overall style is right up there with some of Nelson's best serious work from the time, and features a striking use of strings against jazz solo instrumentation, almost in a manner that recalls Ralph Burns' best styles of the 50s. Titles include "The Artists Rightful Place", "Jacqueline", "Day In Dallas", "Let The Word Go Forth", and "John Kennedy Memory Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo orange and black label pressing.)

George Harmonica SmithOf The Blues ... LP
Bluesway/ABC, 1969. Very Good+ ... $14.99 19.99
A hip little record – produced by Bob Thiele as pre-Flying Dutchman effort, and with some of the great vibe of the blues records on that label! The set's got an unusual lineup – with jazzman Richard Williams on trumpet, plus Ed Davis on tenor, Marshall Hooks on guitar, Curtis Tillman on bass, Robert Schedel on piano, and Big Jim Wynn on saxophones. One track also features guitar from Art Adams and harmonica from Lightnin Rod – and titles include "Blues For Reverend King", "Ode To Billie Joe", "If You Were A Rabbit", "Juicy Harmonica", "Help Me", and "A Letter To The President". ✨✧ BlackaliciousBlazing Arrow ... LP
MCA, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A huge moment for Blackalicious – a group who'd been gaining plenty of cred on the underground, and who reached out to a much bigger set of ears with this major label debut! The whole thing's top-shelf through and through – superb production from Chief Xcel next to the words from Gift of Gab and Chief Excel – alongside a host of guests including Quannum mainmasts Lyrics Born, Lateef, and Joyo – as well as Dilated People's Raka and Babu, Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist and Chali 2na – and even work from Gil Scott-Heron and Ben Harper too! Clearly, someone had enough faith in the group to give them the money to realize their dream – and that faith definitely pays off here – on titles that include the classic single "Make You Feel That Way" – plus "Blazing Arrow", "4000 Miles", "Paragraph President", "First In Flight", "Purest Love", "Sky Is Falling", "It's Going Down", "Release (parts 1, 2, & 3)", and "Chemical Calisthenics". ✨✧ VariousFunky Funky New Orleans Vol 4 – Rare & Unreleased New Orleans Funk 1969 to 1973 ... LP
Tuff City/Funky Delicacies, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The funkiest visit to New Orleans yet – and the best collection of Tuff City's series of lost grooves from the Crescent City scene! This volume moves way past the obvious New Orleans classics, and really digs deeply into a realm of lesser-known artists and singles – coming up with a groove that's certainly got New Orleans roots, but which also stands with the deepest funk coming out of the northern scenes at the same time – thundering out with heavy bass, snapping drums, and some wicked work on guitar! Titles include "Funky Jaws" by Larry Jones, "Turn Me On" by The Fantoms, "The Monkey That Became President (part 1)" by Brotherhood, "Sooky Feeling (part 1)" by Brotherhood, "Direct From The Ghetto" by Warren Lee, "Come On & Make Me" by Brothers Two, "Get On Up (part 2)" by Chuck Conway, "Ode To Billie Joe" by Trick Bag, "I'm From The South" by Jerry Byrne, and "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" by Lonnie Jones. ✨✧ AJ Suede/Specs WizardLong May We Rain/Lost Gems ... LP
Crane City, 2021. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A split album – featuring work from Seattle up-and-comer AJ Suede, and longstanding resident artist Specs Wizard! There's a strong sense of history that runs through the AJ Suede titles – vintage soul snippets and historical recordings – laced together carefully to accompany AJ's down to earth lyrics on titles that include "Blood Cruzzins", "Democrazy Manifest", "The Plane", "Majora", and "Ten Times Plus". Things are a bit more lean on the Specswizard side – lots of fantastic soulful tones and textures, mixed together with a spare sound that never gets in the way of the muted voice that delivers the rhymes – some biting commentary on his city and scene – on titles that include "Floyd", "The President", "Legend", "Pirate Tax", "Another", and "Empty". ✨✧ Souljazz OrchestraFreedom No Go Die ... LP
Do Right (Canada), 2007. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
More Afro Funk than the soul jazz you might guess from the group's name – but that's OK with us, because the record's plenty darn great! Souljazz Orchestra are one of the best of the current wave of Afro combos to hail from Canada – and they manage to get an incredible full sound from a surprisingly small range of instruments – usually just 3 saxes, a trumpet, keyboards, and percussion – but played with a sense of power to earn them the "orchestra" in their name! There's a definite Fela influence going on here – grooves that move fast with very skittish rhythms – snaking out with great horn bits and keyboard lines. But the overall approach is a bit tighter too – much more focused at times, on slightly shorter tunes, about half of which are vocal numbers. The Latin-inflected "Little Habana" has the group breaking format a bit – and other tunes include "Mista President", "The Blind Leading The Blind", "Insurrection", and "Mojuba". 8 tracks in all! Presidents5-10-15-20-25-30 Years Of Love ... LP
Sussex, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $28.99
A vocal group classic from back in the day – the one and only full length set issued by The Presidents – one of those east coast groups who really knew how to knock it out of the park! Van McCoy handles the production, and wrote and arranged most of the tracks too – and the record's got that careful approach he brought to all of his best late 60s indie work, but touched with some great 70s currents that really echo nicely with the generation of the Stylistics, Moments, and Delfonics! The set includes the big title cut "Years Of Love" – plus "Gotta Keep Movin", "For You", "Sweet Magic", "This Is My Dream World", and "How Can You Say You're Leavin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – a great copy!)
