A great step forward for Popul Vuh – a set that's still filled with all the amazing electronics of the group's previous records, but which also has even more focus and tunefulness too – yet all in a way that's still pretty darn far out overall! The album's got a slightly spiritual bent, as you might guess from the title – and the instrumentation is slightly expanded, so that there's more guitar and reed work than ever before, yet still used in a way that's pretty darn electronic. The tracks are all instrumental, and have a really beautiful sound – and titles include "Abschied", "Andact", "Nict Hoch Im Himmel", "Andacht", "Ah", and "Hosianna Mantra". Really beautiful electronics from the enigmatic Guy Skornik – an artist that we mostly know for his quirky concept record Pour Pauwels, but who sounds here like some of the best electronicians of the German scene of the 70s! All tracks are long and spun out – electronic, but with acoustic elements in the mix – maybe in a mode that's similar to the 70s soundtrack creations of PopolVuh, Tangerine Dream, or Vangelis – but darker, too – most likely because the music was composed for an obscure film by Alexander Jodorowsky! Yet the music here hardly needs images on a screen – as Skornik's created these wonderfully evocative passages, created with some help from Steve Hillage and members of Cossi Anatz. Titles include "Elise & Tusk Reunited", "Poo Lorn 1", "Elise Liberates Tusk", "Poo Lorn 2", "Goodnight Ram Baba", "Elise On The Run", and "Crossing The River". LP, Vinyl record album
A totally weird solo project from Florian Fricke of PopolVuh – and a set that's very much in keeping with the spirit of the title! There's an earthy, organic vibe to the whole thing – as the record features Fricke and a group of other singers doing these long, slow-building chants – clearly inspired by both Gregorian and Tibetan spiritual modes, but with a much more abstract approach overall – so that the voices come together more as sounds than anything else – which creates this very unusual quality that almost makes the album feel more like low-end electronics than anything created by the human voice! The result is surprisingly beautiful – and every bit as moving as the best later PopolVuh material – with long tracks that include "Song Of The Earth", "Gruppenseufzen", "Mit Dem Menschen", and "Die Erde Und Ich Sind Eins". Amazing music from Laurance Vanay – actually a recording name for Jacqueline Thibault, a hell of a great keyboardist but an artist the label thought would be better off billed as a man! The sound here is halfway between the spacey experiments of Brian Eno and Cluster, and some of the more ambitious sound library work of the time – particularly those rare moments when prog artist got to do some studio work! Thibault's keyboards are wonderful – lots of Fender Rhodes mixed with Hammond and early synth – usually spun out at an instrumental level that has the tunes building slowly in these really great layers of sound – almost like a PopolVuh soundtrack, but a lot more tuneful too. There's a fragile complexity that really makes the music special – and unlike anything we've ever heard from the European scene of the time – and titles include "Alone In The Rain", "Evening Colours", "Forgotten Moments", "Twin Cities", "Eyes Closed On The Way", "Sunshine In My Heart", and "Underwater Light Reflection". CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – includign "Mamie"," Mop", and "Fausse Fn" – plus alternate takes of songs on the album. CD
