Plastic PennyTwo Sides Of A Penny ... LP
Page One, 1968. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A great little record from a British group who grew out of a single studio pop hit – then quickly emerged as something else entirely! Singer Brian Keith recorded the leadoff hit as a single, without the band – but man, once a group was put together, things really got interesting – as Keith's compelling, soulful vocals get sublime support from the organ of Paul Raymond, guitar of Mike Graham, bass of Tony Murray, and drums of a young Nigel Olsson – who'd later go on to great fame in the 70s! The territory has echoes of the soul and blues of the mod years – but the complexity of the organ lines, and some of the rhythms, make for a more baroque sound – maybe like Procol Harum at times, but with its very own vibe. Olsson and Raymond also sing a bit – and titles include "Everything I Am", "Genevieve", "Wake Me Up", "Mrs Grundy", "Take Me Back", "I Want You", "So Much Older Now", "No Pleasure Without Pain My Love", and a version of "Strawberry Fields Forever". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue on Sommor, still in the shrink and including the insert.)
