✨✧ Chico Mann & Captain PlanetNight Visions ... CD
Bastard Jazz (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most tuneful albums we've ever heard from Chico Mann – and a set that moves into much more song-based territory than some of his earlier work! The style here is a unique hybrid of beats, breaks, and Latin – almost in a mode that could crack a larger global market, if the right forces were in place – with very catchy Spanish-language songs that are perfect for the dancefloor! There's echoes of more mainstream modes in the approach, but the overall presentation is as hip as you'd expect from Chico and Captain Planet – on titles that include "Can't Let Go", "Somos Candela", "Oye Bien", "Como Me Miras", "La Oscuridad", "Cuentos De Anoche", and a remake of Manu Dibango's "New Bell". Charles EarlandLeaving This Planet ... LP
Prestige, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
One of the greatest albums ever from organist Charles Earland – a double-length set that's filled with spiritual, soaring grooves! The style here is a perfect blend of the rougher soul jazz of Earland's roots with some of the spacier styles of his later recordings – served up in a sound that's majestic and powerful, almost with an indie soul jazz sort of vibe overall! There's an immediate urgency to most numbers that's totally undeniable – a lesson learned from the electric experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, but fused down into a core essence – then let loose on a soaring journey to the heavens. Earland plays Hammond, moog, clavinet, and Arp on the set – and other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Dave Hubbard on alto and soprano sax, Eddie Henderson and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets, Marc Elf on guitar, Harvey Mason on drums, and the incredible Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers – bringing in a spacey edge to the record that's really amazing! Rudy Copeland sings a wonderful vocal on the title cut, "Leaving This Planet" – and all other instrumental cuts include "Red Clay", "Warp Factor 9", "Tyner", "Van Jay", "Never Ending Melody", "Mason's Galaxy", and "Asteroid". Sony (UK), 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
The group's first full length album – and a classic batch of soulful funky tunes, handled with the charm and care that would make Jamiroquai one of the best new soul acts to come out of the UK during the 90s. Think Brand New Heavies meets Stevie Wonder meets Steely Dan, and you'll get only part of the picture – as Jay and crew work things together perfectly, blending a wide range of influences into a globally conscious cosmic groove that's a perfect soul platform for the 21st century! 10 tracks: "Didgin' Out", "When You Gonna Learn (JK mix)", "Too Young To Die", "Music Of The Mind", "Hooked Up", "If I Like It I Do It", "Whatever It Is I Just Can't Stop", "Blow Your Mind", "Revolution 1993", and "Emergency On Planet Earth". A sweet single that re-presents two tracks from the La Sombra album by Chip Wickham – one of our favorite spiritual jazz sets in recent years! "Red Planet" takes off into cosmic broken beat territory – more electrified complex rhythms driving at the core, while Chip's flute still gets a bit of a solo over the top! Carlos Nino brings his heady touch to "La Sombra" – really expanding the music with almost an early 70s Impulse Records vibe – as the flute and vibes have a great sense of warm exploration, amidst some other subtle sonic elements that really set the mood! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $22.99
Outer space music that's firmly grounded to earth – as most of it comes from that late 50s moment when the 45 market was really spilling open – and so much groovy music got set to wax! The tunes here are a great mix of styles – some raw rockers, some spacey easy listening tracks, and even a few headier numbers – all held together through space themes and galactic musings – sometimes in the vocals, sometimes in the instrumental styles! Titles include "Dark Moon" by Gale Storm, "Man From Mars" by Butch Paulson, "Destination Mars" by Frosty & The Diamonds, "Martian Chant" by Space Men, "Marty On The Planet Mars (part 2)" by Marty, "Blue Moon Baby" by Dave Diddle Day, "Signals From Saturn" by Rose DuBats, "Monsters Of Jupiter" by Russ Garcia, and "In First Orbit" by Jean-Jacques Perry. Marva KingFeels Right ... CD
Planet/Sony (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $13.99
A great set from soul singer Marva King – an artist who never got a chance to record many albums, but who's strongly remembered for this early 80s gem! The cover's almost got a retro sort of look, and King brings a bit of that to her vocals – a strong old school depth, which is given a more contemporary focus by producer Richard Perry – but never in a way that sounds too commercial or overdone! Perry had worked great magic with other singers in the late 70s – and really brings his best to bear here, too – which helps Marva really glow and shine, as she moves through a set of titles that include "Feels Right", "Here We Go Again", "Two Lovers", "Isle Of Castaways", "Feeling Wonderful Feelings", and "Suspicions". Terrence ParkerGod Loves Detroit ... CD
Planet E, 2017. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
One of the boldest statements we've heard from the Detroit underground in years – and a great reminder that the city's legendary club sound is still alive and well – if you know where to look! Terrence Parker serves up a set that makes the Planet E label very proud – and which also maybe hits even more soulful territory than that imprint in its early days – kind of a rising, merging mode that also absorbs some of the best Chicago and New York currents, yet still keeps things very straightforward, with that special Detroit crackle that's always made the city's club tracks so exciting! Parker works with a few guests on the album – Merachka and Coco Street – and the set's about half vocal, and half instrumental – with tracks that include "Just Like Musik (main mix)", "Bassment Beats (TP bassment mix)", "God Loves Detroit (The Resurrection)", "Latter Rain (healing rain mix)", "Let's Go", "Lift Yo Hands Raise Em High", "The Sabbath", "Transition", and "Will You ever Come Back To Me". Eric SidayUltra Sonic Perception (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Berry/Dual Planet (Australia), Early 60s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99 23.99
Very early electronic sound library material from Eric Siday – so much so, that all these tracks were originally issued as 78rpm singles – at a time before the sound library scene moved into using full LPs! A number of cuts here were used as early passages on the first Doctor Who episodes – and others follow nicely in a similar vein – with very bold, powerful explorations of the earliest elements of analogue electronics – and an especially strong ear for the darker side of the spectrum! Most numbers here are never too noisy – not as much so as avant compositional work of the time – but they hang on the edge in a really great way, creating a lot of stark spacey elements with just a few deft touches. Titles include "Comet", "Ultimate", "Moonscape", "Galaxy", "Suspended Animation", "The Machines", "Pavane", "Pizzicato Piano", "Challenge Of Space", and "Eclipse". LP, Vinyl record album

Dual Planet (Australia), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 23.99
Moog and synth-heavy soundtrack to the early 80s nuclear horror B-Movie Chain Reaction! Composer Andrew Thomas Wilson pairs up elements of eerier synth and proggy rock inspired soundtracks by John Carpenter, Goblin and benchmark acts/composers of the period with some more droning, minimalist bits, and busy, nascent 80s electro pop and rock. Compelling stuff played on a mighty arsenal of period synthesizers and keyboards – mostly by Wilson himself, with only some additional help on guitar, drums and bass. Includes "Awakening", "The Beast", "Decontamination", "Heinrich's Theme", "Chain Reaction", "Once More With Feeling", "Paradise Valley", "The Hand At The Window" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Dual Planet, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool set from sound library enigma Teisco – and one that's a lot more tune-based than some of his other work! The vibe here is very much in an early 80s electro mode – lots of processed guitar over drum machine rhythms, often with this wobbly vibrating sound that's pretty darn cool – spooky at the same time that it's catchy, with a quality that almost feels like some of the more experimental Factory Records groups trying to come up with jingles for TV commercials – but in a really weird way! Titles include "Zompalompax", "Atmosfera Neutra", "Artico", "Mutazione", "Plane Beta", "I Foletti", and "Suffritticosa". CD

CartolaCartola (1976) (O Mundo E Um Moinho) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Discos Marcus Pereira/Polysom (Brazil), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A 70s gem from Cartola – one of the key recordings done in a crucial flurry of activity in the later years of his career! There's a simple brilliance here that's hard to deny – aging vocals mixed with spare backings on guitar, flute, and percussion – all in a samba style that's never too driving, nor overly-emotive – but which resonates strongly from Cartola's many years on the planet. The session was one of a few that the singer did for the folkloric Marcus Pereira label – and it's got a wonderfully respectful sound throughout. Titles include "Aconteceu", "Ensaboa Mulata", "Cordas De Aco", "Minha", "O Mundo E Um Moinho", and "Sala De Recepcao". LP, Vinyl record album

Terry AllenLubbock (On Everything) (deluxe edition) ... CD
Fate/Paradise Of Bachelors, 1978. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 18.98
Fantastic sounds from Terry Allen – one of the key underground Texas talents who were helping transform the style of country music in the 70s – and one of the few who maybe never fully got his due! Terry's from the same scene as David Allen Coe, Billy Joe Shaver, and Guy Clark, but his music is much more underground than theirs – maybe only ever designed to be put forth in an intimate club setting, late in the night – where the very conversational style of Allen's songs almost make them feel like barroom musings of a cat who's seen a heck of a lot of life on this planet, but still very able to peer into the souls of those he comes across. This double-length set is Allen's masterpiece – originally issued on a small pressing back in the 70s, and very much an alt-country relic – but from a time when such a thing didn't even exist. Titles include "Cocktails For Three", "High Plains Jamboree", "Amarillo Highway", "Lubbock Woman", "Rendezvous USA", "The Girl Who Danced Oklahoma", "Truckload Of Art", and "The Pink & Black Song". Great reissue – with corrected sound, and a huge booklet of notes on Allen – with essays by David Byrne and others. CD

BBC/Silva Screen, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
Weird and wonderful sounds from one of the coolest spots in the universe – the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop, home to a mix of surprisingly groovy and experimental electronic music! This album was issued on the 25th anniversary of the sonic institution – and it features a strong mix of older analogue styles with some more 80s-oriented electronics – yet still with all the depth you'd expect from the Radiophonic Workshop during its classic years! These aren't tinny slasher keyboards, or electro pop programs – and instead, the music here is as thoughtful and compelling as the sounds created during the Delia Derbyshire generation – but are handled by artists who include Peter Howell, Paddy Kingsland, Dick Mills, Jonathan Gibbs, Elizabeth Parker, and Malcolm Clarke. Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Parlophone, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 11CD ... $138.99 149.98
Amazing music from one of our most-treasured stretches of David Bowie's career – that creatively-fertile time when he escaped to West Berlin, hid from the mainstream, and made some groundbreaking records with Brian Eno – then returned to the limelight to remind us all that he was still a hell of a force to be reckoned with! The set includes everything post-Thin White Duke, and pre-Let's Dance – a run of music that's still shaping new sounds on this planet all these many years later. The set begins with Low – the mix of experimental instrumentals and subtle vocal tracks that was a complete change from Ziggy Stardust – and follows with Heroes, Lodger, and Scary Monsters & Super Creeps – all albums that reintroduce some sense of song and lyrical interplay, but at a level that clearly indicates how important Bowie was to the generation of post-punk and new wave as his earlier work was to psych, prog, and glam! But the package isn't just a standard collection of albums – because along with those four studio records, it also features the live album Stage, presented here in two different full mixes – plus a new 2017 mix of Lodger, which really increases the edge. There's also a special Heroes EP, with all the different language versions of the song – and a very cool Re:Call 3 album – which features all the singles that were issued at the time, plus other rare material – and Bowie's very unique take on Bertolt Brecht's Baal. Titles on this album include "Alabama Song", "Crystal Japan", "Under Pressure", "Remembering Marie A", "The Drowned Girl", "The Dirty Song", "Cat People", and even his "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" duet with Bing Crosby. As with other entries in this complete Bowie series, the presentation is wonderful – album sleeve replicas, great packaging, and lots of notes – kind of a treasure, even if you already own some of the records! Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Sealed ... $19.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Chambers1st Bassman ... LP
Vee Jay, 1961. Very Good ... $36.99
One of the most obscure sessions as a leader from the legendary bassman Paul Chambers – the crucial talent who really helped reinvent the role of his instrument in jazz during the 50s – and who left our planet all too soon! The record's got a vibe that's a bit different than Paul's work for Blue Note – almost more of a Prestige-styled hardbop approach – with some nice long tracks, filled with plenty of fire – and featuring a sextet that includes Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Yusef Lateef on tenor, and Wynton Kelly on piano. Turrentine and Fuller are beautifully smoking – as they always seemed to be at this point in their careers – and Lateef contributes a number of excellent compositions to the set, like "Bass Region", "Retrogress", and "Blessed" – all with the great mix of hardbop and more exotic themes that he could put into his best work. LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a small center split on the bottom seam and a cutout hole, otherwise looks great.)

Dennis CoffeySweet Taste Of Sin ... LP
Westbound, 1978. Very Good+ ... $6.99
By the time of this one, Dennis had been producing a fair bit of club tracks for Westbound – and it certainly shows in the record, which has a smoother sound than before, and a more spacious soulful groove. However, there's actually still a fair bit of funk in the mix – and Dennis' own guitar often has a sharp edge that's not too different from earlier years. There's a fair bit of vocals on the record – by singers like Carolyn Crawford, Brandye, and Dolores Davis – and titles include "Sweet Taste Of Sin", "Love Encounter", "Gimmie That Funk", "Calling Planet Earth", and "Someone Special". John ColtraneCosmic Music ... LP
Impulse/Superior Viaduct, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A set that really earns its title – as it's easily some of the most cosmic music John Coltrane ever recorded – and also kind of a way of saying goodbye to the planet, to leave his music in the hands of a next generation of creators! The album features material recorded by a Coltrane group in 1966, and an Alice Coltrane combo in 1968, after Coltrane's death – making it a great link between two moments in the group – especially since Pharoah Sanders plays tenor and Alice Coltrane plays piano on both tracks. The Coltrane tunes – "Manifestation" and "Reverend King" – both have a righteous raw power – and the Alice Coltrane numbers – "The Sun" and "Lord Help Me" – really showcase the slower-building spiritual energy that both she and Pharoah Sanders would carry on in their music. Great stuff throughout – and completely essential! LP, Vinyl record album
(Issued here with the great original cover art from the indie Coltrane Music release!)

✨✧ John ColtraneLove Supreme ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1964. Used ... $3.99
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for the album – which is a full-length suite of spiritual expression, one that gives even greater focus and message to Coltrane's long-spiralling style of soloing on the tenor sax! The group here is the classic quartet – McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – taking Trane up to the heavens on waves of modal energy, but also holding his spirit closer to the planet than on some of later, more outside performances. There's a slight bit of vocalization on the record – that chanted energy that imbues the set with so much love – and movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". CD

Sam CookeCooke's Tour ... LP
RCA, 1960. Good+ ... $14.99
Not a live tour album from Sam Cooke – but a globally-themed batch of tunes that really helps show off his range as a singer! The set features tunes with titles that evoke a rich landscape of settings from around the world – and offer Sam a nice chance to change things up a bit from the usual – moving more into a mature vocal mode that's different than his more familiar soul singles! Glen Osser handled the arrangements, and the approach is similar to Sam's Hits Of The 50s record – in that it showcases a wider range of material that points the way to the huge pop potential Cooke could have had, if he hadn't left this planet so quickly. Titles include "Galway Bay", "London By Night", "Bali Hai", "Far Away Places", "The Coffee Song", "Arrivederci Roma", and "Jamaica Farewell". LP, Vinyl record album

Severn DardenSound Of My Own Voice ... LP
Mercury, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
From hipster comedian to schlocky roles in The Planet of The Apes, Severn Darden was one of the 60s more enigmatic performers. This early album has him doing intellectual standup and skits with the help of the Second City cast – including Alan Arkin, Paul Sand, and Barbara Harris. The stuff's a bit dated, but it has that nice pre-hippy early 60s intellectual camp sort of twist. LP, Vinyl record album

Wilson Das NevesSe Me Chamar O Sorte ... CD
Som Livre (Brazil), 2013. New Copy ... $8.99
Beautiful work from Wilson Das Neves – as mature and poised as his image on the cover, but still filled with the depth and soul we remember from years back! The vocals have this raspy charm that definitely underscores Wilson's years on this planet – and the backings have this warmth and jazzy undercurrent that really works well with the sound of the tunes – a slight hint of sentiment, but never in a cloying way – just the perfect sort of balance to honor the talents and accomplishments of someone like Das Neves! Titles include "Trato", "Cara De Queixa", "Peao De Obra", "Limites", "Feito Siameses", "Mascara De Cera", "Se Me Chamar O Sorte", and "Dono Da Razao". CD

Mark De Clive-Lowe Presents ChurchMark De Clive-Lowe Presents Church (with download) ... LP
Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2014. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99
Mark De Clive-Lowe takes us to church – with a set that's easily his most soulful, spiritual record ever! The album's got a lot more acoustic elements than usual – plenty of jazz elements on tenor, flute, trumpet, and percussion – mixed with Mark's own great Fender Rhodes and other keyboards – some of which shift the sound of the acoustic instruments in the process! The shift is a bit like that taken by Jimi Tenor with his own music in recent years, but the overall sound is still very much in the soaring, cosmic territory we've always loved from Mark – but there's also a much deeper connection to the planet as well. Wonderful throughout – a great step forward for an artist we already love so much – and titles include "Sketch For Miguel", "Now Or Never", "Nova Roda", "The Mission", "Distractions", "Mason's Galaxy", "Imam", and "Sun Up Sun Down". ✨✧ Charlotte Dos SantosCleo ... CD
Fresh Selects, 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
Charlotte Dos Santos is a hell of a singer, and one with a really amazing range – able to float to the top of heavenly spaces with her light inflections in the music, but also tied strongly to the planet with a mellow-stepping soulful groove! The blend of lightness and depth here is wonderful – a nice change from the usual underground soul material, as is Charlotte's lyrical approach – almost as lightly poetic as her voice, but more solid too – with a vibe that's completely unique, and which (we hope!) means that we'll be hearing plenty from her in years to come! The album's got this wonderful recasting of Freddie Hubbard's classic "Red Clay" – plus the tracks "Summer Is Icumen In", "Good Sign", "King Of Hearts", "It's Over Bobby", "Watching You", and "Move On".
