The continuing genius of Planet Comics – one of the first-ever comics devoted entirely to science fiction stories – still going strong here in the early 50s! ✨✧ Chico Mann & Captain PlanetNight Visions ... CD
Bastard Jazz (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most tuneful albums we've ever heard from Chico Mann – and a set that moves into much more song-based territory than some of his earlier work! The style here is a unique hybrid of beats, breaks, and Latin – almost in a mode that could crack a larger global market, if the right forces were in place – with very catchy Spanish-language songs that are perfect for the dancefloor! There's echoes of more mainstream modes in the approach, but the overall presentation is as hip as you'd expect from Chico and Captain Planet – on titles that include "Can't Let Go", "Somos Candela", "Oye Bien", "Como Me Miras", "La Oscuridad", "Cuentos De Anoche", and a remake of Manu Dibango's "New Bell". The hard-to-find soundtrack for the first Planet Of The Apes film! The record has a nice mix of dramatic orchestral scoring with some other tracks that have a cool jingly jangly noisy sound. Jerry Goldsmith did some great work for this one, and the album has a cool gatefold cover with images from the film, plus "commentary" by Charleton Heston (gun-loving bastard!) Think Brand New Heavies meets Stevie Wonder meets Steely Dan, and you'll get only part of the picture – as Jay and crew work things together perfectly, blending a wide range of influences into a globally conscious cosmic groove that's a perfect soul platform for the 21st century! 10 tracks: "Didgin' Out", "When You Gonna Learn (JK mix)", "Too Young To Die", "Music Of The Mind", "Hooked Up", "If I Like It I Do It", "Whatever It Is I Just Can't Stop", "Blow Your Mind", "Revolution 1993", and "Emergency On Planet Earth". A sweet single that re-presents two tracks from the La Sombra album by Chip Wickham – one of our favorite spiritual jazz sets in recent years! "Red Planet" takes off into cosmic broken beat territory – more electrified complex rhythms driving at the core, while Chip's flute still gets a bit of a solo over the top! Carlos Nino brings his heady touch to "La Sombra" – really expanding the music with almost an early 70s Impulse Records vibe – as the flute and vibes have a great sense of warm exploration, amidst some other subtle sonic elements that really set the mood! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Norton/Kicks, 2011. New Copy Book ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Science Fiction Poetry of Sun Ra – complete and unabidged – in a great, kinda old school hip pocket paperback-styled tome from Kicks Books! As revered as Sun Ra is, was, and will forever be as one of the great avant garde bandleaders and all around musical innovators of the 20th Century, his work as an Afro-futurist poet is overlooked. This book aims to change that, but not in a precious way at all. It's sort of presented as a fun little pulp paperback. Includes a nice forward by Amiri Baraka and an intro by science fiction historian Bhob Stewart, who does a terrific job of detailing Ra's 60s poetry and his quite genuine relevence in that realm! Paperback, 124 pages. Book

✨✧ VariousTumba Rumba 2 – More Torrid Latin Rhythms From Around Planet Earth ... LP
University Of Vice (Spain), Late 40s/1950s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Latin rhythms and plenty more – a set that maybe goes past some of the more familiar sounds of New York and Havana in the postwar years – and instead presents a nicely wide-ranging set of grooves! Make no mistake, there's plenty of Cuban influence going on here – but the tunes themselves are strongly percussive, and often nice and jazzy – and definitely represent the harder side of the spectrum from the time – not the kind of crossover Latin tracks from bigger artists. Titles include "Dark Shadows" by Tony Toran, "Batakum Clave" by Los Cangaceiros, "Tingo Talango" by Los Caciques, "Guarare" by Orquesta Ciudad Trujillo, "Le Marchand De Cacahuetes" by Don Barreto, "Mambo Gitano" by Hermanos Castro, "Sun Sun Babae" by Chio O'Farrill, "Yenguele Maria" by Alberto Zayas, and "Mambo De La Selva" by Humberto Morales. ✨✧ Screamin Jay HawkinsPlanet Sessions (Night & Day Of Screamin Jay Hawkins – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Planet/Ace (UK), 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible lost moment in the career of Screamin Jay Hawkins – material that was recorded in London in the mid 60s, and with a very different flavor than most of Hawkins' other material! There's a mod jazz approach to this set that's totally great – as Jay's raw vocals come into play with a sweet-grooving Hammond, in a combo that also features some sharp work on guitar, and some strong sax solos too! The upbeat, jazzy vibe is totally great – and gives Screamin Jay a whole new focus for his vocals – and for his songwriting, too – as most of the material here is original. And while Hawkins is always best remembered for his spooky, gimmicky cuts, this material is equally great in a totally different way – and, if it were pursued further, might have given the man a whole new direction in his career. Make no mistake, there's still plenty here to love if you're a longtime fan of Screamin Jay Hawkins – but you'll also really appreciate the mod grooves in the set as well! Titles include "I Wanna Know", "In My Dream", "Change Your Ways", "Serving Time", "Please Forgive Me", "Move Me", "My Marion", and "All Night". Plus, CD features a whopping 12 bonus tracks – a few alternate takes, and other versions of album songs – plus the titles "I'm Lonely" and "Stone Crazy". CD

Marva KingFeels Right ... CD
Planet/Sony (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A great set from soul singer Marva King – an artist who never got a chance to record many albums, but who's strongly remembered for this early 80s gem! The cover's almost got a retro sort of look, and King brings a bit of that to her vocals – a strong old school depth, which is given a more contemporary focus by producer Richard Perry – but never in a way that sounds too commercial or overdone! Perry had worked great magic with other singers in the late 70s – and really brings his best to bear here, too – which helps Marva really glow and shine, as she moves through a set of titles that include "Feels Right", "Here We Go Again", "Two Lovers", "Isle Of Castaways", "Feeling Wonderful Feelings", and "Suspicions". One of the boldest statements we've heard from the Detroit underground in years – and a great reminder that the city's legendary club sound is still alive and well – if you know where to look! Terrence Parker serves up a set that makes the Planet E label very proud – and which also maybe hits even more soulful territory than that imprint in its early days – kind of a rising, merging mode that also absorbs some of the best Chicago and New York currents, yet still keeps things very straightforward, with that special Detroit crackle that's always made the city's club tracks so exciting! Parker works with a few guests on the album – Merachka and Coco Street – and the set's about half vocal, and half instrumental – with tracks that include "Just Like Musik (main mix)", "Bassment Beats (TP bassment mix)", "God Loves Detroit (The Resurrection)", "Latter Rain (healing rain mix)", "Let's Go", "Lift Yo Hands Raise Em High", "The Sabbath", "Transition", and "Will You ever Come Back To Me". Eric SidayUltra Sonic Perception (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Berry/Dual Planet (Australia), Early 60s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99 23.99
Very early electronic sound library material from Eric Siday – so much so, that all these tracks were originally issued as 78rpm singles – at a time before the sound library scene moved into using full LPs! A number of cuts here were used as early passages on the first Doctor Who episodes – and others follow nicely in a similar vein – with very bold, powerful explorations of the earliest elements of analogue electronics – and an especially strong ear for the darker side of the spectrum! Most numbers here are never too noisy – not as much so as avant compositional work of the time – but they hang on the edge in a really great way, creating a lot of stark spacey elements with just a few deft touches. Titles include "Comet", "Ultimate", "Moonscape", "Galaxy", "Suspended Animation", "The Machines", "Pavane", "Pizzicato Piano", "Challenge Of Space", and "Eclipse". LP, Vinyl record album

Dual Planet (Australia), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 23.99
Moog and synth-heavy soundtrack to the early 80s nuclear horror B-Movie Chain Reaction! Composer Andrew Thomas Wilson pairs up elements of eerier synth and proggy rock inspired soundtracks by John Carpenter, Goblin and benchmark acts/composers of the period with some more droning, minimalist bits, and busy, nascent 80s electro pop and rock. Compelling stuff played on a mighty arsenal of period synthesizers and keyboards – mostly by Wilson himself, with only some additional help on guitar, drums and bass. Includes "Awakening", "The Beast", "Decontamination", "Heinrich's Theme", "Chain Reaction", "Once More With Feeling", "Paradise Valley", "The Hand At The Window" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marcos ValleJet Samba ... CD
Universal/Planet Rhythm, 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An all-instrumental set from the legendary Marcos Valle – beautifully jazzy, and filled with plenty of great work on Fender Rhodes! There's a style here that brings us back to the arrangements that Marcos used heavily on his Odeon work of the late 60s and early 70s (including his work with Joao Donato) – a mode that took inspiration from bossa, borrowed a bit more from American and European styles, and created a sound that was complicated, sophisticated, yet never failed to groove! The overall approach is a bit more modern here than on those albums, but there's a sense of gentle warmth and playfulness that we totally love – as Valle works with an octet that includes trombone, saxes, trumpet, and plenty of percussion – all warmly arranged with a surprising degree of soul. Valle's nicely departing from some of his recent albums for Far Out – offering us a whole new side of his talents, and one that could easily play well for fans of American electric jazz as well. Titles include "Jet Samba", "Bar Ingles", "Selva De Pedra", "Adams Hotel", "Vem", "Catedral", "Posto 9", "Previsao Do Tempo", and "Campina Grande". CD

Planet Ilunga (Netherlands), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Classic sounds from Franco & OK Jazz – one of the coolest groups going in the Congo in the 50s – and an ensemble whose approach paved the way for many other acts to come! The music here is all from the final years of Belgian rule, but already represents a flowering of newly independent ideas – music that embraces some of the jazz in the group's name, particularly on the solo phrasing of the guitar and saxophone – but which also has lots of Latin influence in the rhythms – as kind of an early example of the sounds of Cuba coming back to influence their African roots! The package is a wonderful presentation of rare tracks – many of which appeared originally on 78s – and titles include "Ndima Ngai", "Yimbi", "Mina Kio", "Bana OK Jazz, "Timing Hole", "Ndokoyo", "Tscha Tscha Del Zombo", "Tika Kobebisa Tango Na Ngai", "Caro Simon Mabanzo", "Naci Para Bailar", "Cuando Paradi", and "Maladi Ya Bolingo". And while the bulk of the record really shows the influence of these mainstream 80s soul artists – and not always in a good way – the record also sports a brilliant tune done with Donald Fagan of Steely Dan, the sweetly grooving "Lazy Nina", which sounds like the best work off Fagan's Nightfly, and has Greg and Don duetting on vocals! Titles include "Behind The Mask", "Signals", "Shake It", "Countdown To Love", "Come As You Are", and "Playin With Fire". Seedy synth soundtrack genius from the early 80s! Turkey Shoot is a pretty notorious slice of early 80s Oz-sploitation cinema – and composer Brian May makes it all the more memorable with his soundtrack work here. It got some brief percussion and strings-heavy bits, but it's main style is eerie, brooding analog synth sounds by May – who is probably best known for his soundtracks to the first two Mad Max movies – and works quite nicely here in style that reminds us a bit of John Carpenter in the late 70s and early 80s. Includes "Turkey Shoot Theme", "Suitable Targets", "Nightfall", "Tractor Pursuit", "Cut Him Down To Size", "Hot & Ready", "Swamp Escape/Beach Fight", "Don't Worry My Dear, He Has Already Eaten", "Crossbow Standoff", "Shrunken Heads", "All Deviants Report To Centre Compound" and more. A 70s gem from Cartola – one of the key recordings done in a crucial flurry of activity in the later years of his career! There's a simple brilliance here that's hard to deny – aging vocals mixed with spare backings on guitar, flute, and percussion – all in a samba style that's never too driving, nor overly-emotive – but which resonates strongly from Cartola's many years on the planet. The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Parlophone, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 11CD ... $138.99 149.98
Amazing music from one of our most-treasured stretches of David Bowie's career – that creatively-fertile time when he escaped to West Berlin, hid from the mainstream, and made some groundbreaking records with Brian Eno – then returned to the limelight to remind us all that he was still a hell of a force to be reckoned with! The set includes everything post-Thin White Duke, and pre-Let's Dance – a run of music that's still shaping new sounds on this planet all these many years later. The set begins with Low – the mix of experimental instrumentals and subtle vocal tracks that was a complete change from Ziggy Stardust – and follows with Heroes, Lodger, and Scary Monsters & Super Creeps – all albums that reintroduce some sense of song and lyrical interplay, but at a level that clearly indicates how important Bowie was to the generation of post-punk and new wave as his earlier work was to psych, prog, and glam! But the package isn't just a standard collection of albums – because along with those four studio records, it also features the live album Stage, presented here in two different full mixes – plus a new 2017 mix of Lodger, which really increases the edge. There's also a special Heroes EP, with all the different language versions of the song – and a very cool Re:Call 3 album – which features all the singles that were issued at the time, plus other rare material – and Bowie's very unique take on Bertolt Brecht's Baal. Titles on this album include "Alabama Song", "Crystal Japan", "Under Pressure", "Remembering Marie A", "The Drowned Girl", "The Dirty Song", "Cat People", and even his "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" duet with Bing Crosby. As with other entries in this complete Bowie series, the presentation is wonderful – album sleeve replicas, great packaging, and lots of notes – kind of a treasure, even if you already own some of the records! Parlophone, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 13LP ... $223.99 249.98
Peter BuckI Am Back To Blow Your Mind Once Again ... LP
Mississippi, 2014. New Copy ... $8.99
A second dose of solo weirdness from Peter Buck – who's best known, of course, as guitarist and co-founder of REM – but he's also done cool and interesting stuff with the Minus Five, The Baseball Project and more in the post REM years – and we admire the heck of his freewheeling solo stuff, too! This one's filled with skronky blues rockers and poetic acoustic tunes alike, with lots of dissonant guitars and unpredictable twists and turns. Other players include Scott McCaughey and other frequent collaborators and special guests. Includes "Ride That Road", "My Slobbering Decline", "Life Is Short", "Southerner", "Here In Heaven", "(You Must Fight To Live) On The Planet Of The Apes", "Welcome To The Party", "Drown With Me", "West Of Sunset", "Roswell" and more. Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Sealed ... $29.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Tim BuckleySefronia (180 gram pressing) ... LP
DiscReet/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A great later album from Tim Buckley – one that really shows him evolving his style in the last few years before his tragic early departure from this planet! Tim's working in a style here that's oddly heavier and with more bluesy overtones than some of his classic 60s albums for Elektra – almost reaching for a stronger style that competes with other singer-songwriters who were beating his action at the time! We're not saying that the album's slick or overly commercial – just recorded with a fuller sound, and less of the light jazz-tinged folk styles used in earlier years. A few of the tunes are done in the older Buckley mode, but others have strings, backing vocals, and other larger arrangements. Titles include "Quicksand", "I Know I'd Recognize Your Face", "Martha", "Peanut Man", "Dolphins", "Honey Man", "Because Of You", and "Sefronia – The King's Chain". LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Chambers1st Bassman ... LP
Vee Jay, 1961. Very Good ... $49.99
One of the most obscure sessions as a leader from the legendary bassman Paul Chambers – the crucial talent who really helped reinvent the role of his instrument in jazz during the 50s – and who left our planet all too soon! The record's got a vibe that's a bit different than Paul's work for Blue Note – almost more of a Prestige-styled hardbop approach – with some nice long tracks, filled with plenty of fire – and featuring a sextet that includes Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Yusef Lateef on tenor, and Wynton Kelly on piano. Turrentine and Fuller are beautifully smoking – as they always seemed to be at this point in their careers – and Lateef contributes a number of excellent compositions to the set, like "Bass Region", "Retrogress", and "Blessed" – all with the great mix of hardbop and more exotic themes that he could put into his best work. (Rainbow label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a small center split on the bottom seam and a cutout hole, otherwise looks great.)

Dennis CoffeyLive Wire – The Westbound Years 1975 to 1978 ... CD
Westbound (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
The later years of Dennis Coffey at Westbound Records – tunes that show a bit of a move away from the rougher funk of his roots, but which are still filled with plenty of sharp-edged work on guitar! Coffey's groove here is more in the club vein that Westbound hit in the mid 70s – upbeat, uptempo rhythms that drew strongly on the label's earlier legacy in funk – but pushed a groove more towards the popular disco styles of the time! Yet Coffey's tunes are never throwaway disco – and from the perspective of these many decades later, they're really just fast funk numbers with a bit of strings – still heavy on tightly snapping rhythms, and filled with loads of beautiful guitar lines from Dennis. This hip package from Ace goes out of its way to focus on the funkiest bits from these years – and the set features 15 titles that include "Wild Child", "Live Wire", "Some Like It Hot", "Free Spirit", "Back Home", "Finger Lickin Good (7" version)", "Sweet Taste Of Sin", "Calling Planet Earth (12" version)", "High On Love", "Gimme That Funk (7" version)", and "Our Love Goes On Forever". Dennis CoffeySweet Taste Of Sin ... LP
Westbound, 1978. Near Mint- ... $7.99
By the time of this one, Dennis had been producing a fair bit of club tracks for Westbound – and it certainly shows in the record, which has a smoother sound than before, and a more spacious soulful groove. However, there's actually still a fair bit of funk in the mix – and Dennis' own guitar often has a sharp edge that's not too different from earlier years. There's a fair bit of vocals on the record – by singers like Carolyn Crawford, Brandye, and Dolores Davis – and titles include "Sweet Taste Of Sin", "Love Encounter", "Gimmie That Funk", "Calling Planet Earth", and "Someone Special". John ColtraneLove Supreme ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1964. Used ... $3.99
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for the album – which is a full-length suite of spiritual expression, one that gives even greater focus and message to Coltrane's long-spiralling style of soloing on the tenor sax! The group here is the classic quartet – McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – taking Trane up to the heavens on waves of modal energy, but also holding his spirit closer to the planet than on some of later, more outside performances. There's a slight bit of vocalization on the record – that chanted energy that imbues the set with so much love – and movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". CD

Frank Cunimondo TrioSagittarius ... CD
Mondo/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
A fantastic album by one of the greatest funky keyboard players of the 70s! Frank Cunimondo may have never made it out of his native Pittsburgh during much of the decade, but albums like this will forever ensure that his name be known in the ranks of groovers everywhere! The album features Frank working with his regular trio – but unlike some of his other earlier sessions, this one's got a large amount of work on electric piano, which brings a whole new dimension to Frank's playing! The album kicks off with "Sagittarius", a 12 minute groover that runs along with electric piano solos at top pace, like some of Charles Earland's best work on the Leaving This Planet album. Next up is an 8 minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", done with lots of funky work on the ARP, squeaking and grooving away in a style that would make Herbie proud! Side two begins with the 14 minute original "Slalom", a cool dark number that builds and builds, adding in more keyboards and getting slowly funkier, in kind of a Bob James mode. Last up is "Samba Nova", a short little bossa number that chills things down nicely. A great little album – and rare as hen's teeth! CD

Severn DardenSound Of My Own Voice ... LP
Mercury, 1961. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
From hipster comedian to schlocky roles in The Planet of The Apes, Severn Darden was one of the 60s more enigmatic performers. This early album has him doing intellectual standup and skits with the help of the Second City cast – including Alan Arkin, Paul Sand, and Barbara Harris. The stuff's a bit dated, but it has that nice pre-hippy early 60s intellectual camp sort of twist. LP, Vinyl record album

Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2014. New Copy ... $8.99
Mark De Clive-Lowe takes us to church – with a set that's easily his most soulful, spiritual record ever! The album's got a lot more acoustic elements than usual – plenty of jazz elements on tenor, flute, trumpet, and percussion – mixed with Mark's own great Fender Rhodes and other keyboards – some of which shift the sound of the acoustic instruments in the process! The shift is a bit like that taken by Jimi Tenor with his own music in recent years, but the overall sound is still very much in the soaring, cosmic territory we've always loved from Mark – but there's also a much deeper connection to the planet as well. Wonderful throughout – a great step forward for an artist we already love so much – and titles include "Sketch For Miguel", "Now Or Never", "Nova Roda", "The Mission", "Distractions", "Mason's Galaxy", "Imam", and "Sun Up Sun Down". The blend of lightness and depth here is wonderful – a nice change from the usual underground soul material, as is Charlotte's lyrical approach – almost as lightly poetic as her voice, but more solid too – with a vibe that's completely unique, and which (we hope!) means that we'll be hearing plenty from her in years to come!
