Babs Robert & The Love PlanetBabs Robert & The Love Planet ... CD
Alpha/SeriE.WOC (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $19.99
Qui est Babs Robert? Turns out he's a hell of a saxophonist from the Belgian scene at the start of the 70s – an amazingly soulful player who's got just the right sort of spiritual vibe to live up to the image on the cover! Babs plays alto, tenor, and even a bit of electric tenor too – plus wood flute, percussion, and other instruments – in a group of players who often handle an equal range of instruments themselves! The music is a mix of modal groovers and freer, more spiritual sounds – a space that's somewhere between the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Pharoah Sanders on Impulse Records – carried off by an equally obscure, but equally excellent group of musicians. Titles include "Marrow Bone", "Extra Pol Action", "Architexture", "PACM", "Pro Forma 1", and "His Master's Noise". CD

A fantastic volume of work from one of the first science fiction comics ever – a publication that picked up right where the sci-fi pulps left off – although with artwork that was a lot more stunning! This volume presents great late 40s material from Planet Comics – from a time when the scripts and artwork were showing even more polish and care than ever before – which made for even more vivid "space opera" stories in the publication's trademark style! The hardcover book presents the full contents of each issue – including text pages, all stories, and even some vintage ads – and this volume features art by George Evans, Graham Ingels, Matt Baker, Leonard Starr, Enrico Bagnoli, and others. The beautiful book is 336 pages, full color, hardcover, and very nicely done. Book

The continuing genius of Planet Comics – one of the first-ever comics devoted entirely to science fiction stories – still going strong here in the early 50s! Unlike some of its contemporaries during the stretch, Planet never got too creepy or too exploitative – but did use the growing comic market to really hone its craft, and perfect the kind of longer-form stories with recurring characters that made the magazine a real hit with audiences young and old. Female characters are as strong as the guys – and the art throughout is wonderful – with top-shelf work from artists who include George Evans, Leonard Starr, Enrico Bagnoli, Frank Bolle, Graham Ingels, Lee Elias, and others. Planet Mod is a pretty groovy place – a spot in the solar system where rock, blues, and soul effortlessly blend together – thanks to the mighty talents of the legendary producer Shel Talmy! The set here is a great dip into the farther reaches of Talmy's records of the 60s – way past the hits, to show the kind of magic that really made the studio genius such a key force in developing the sound of London at the time – often with a fair bit of influence from America, but in a way that was already shifting into fresh British modes for the new audiences overseas. As always with Ace, the package and presentation are stunning – and the set even features some rare tracks that truly come from the vaults, mixed with other obscure singles, and supported with a great deal of notes. 24 tracks in all – and titles include "Mai Lee" by John Lee Hooker, "Don't Let It Be" by The Tribe, "Goodbye Girl" by The Preachers, "Goodbye So Long" by The Soul Brothers, "Broken Truth" by A Wild Uncertainty, "Life's Too Good To Waste" by Tony Christie & The Trackers, "Stone Crazy" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Too Much Of A Woman" by The Corduroys, "Have You Ever Had The Blues (alt take)" by Ray Gates, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" by John Lee's Groundhogs, "Unto Us (demo version)" by The New Breed, and "Think" by The Total. Outer space music that's firmly grounded to earth – as most of it comes from that late 50s moment when the 45 market was really spilling open – and so much groovy music got set to wax! A sweet single that re-presents two tracks from the La Sombra album by Chip Wickham – one of our favorite spiritual jazz sets in recent years! "Red Planet" takes off into cosmic broken beat territory – more electrified complex rhythms driving at the core, while Chip's flute still gets a bit of a solo over the top! Carlos Nino brings his heady touch to "La Sombra" – really expanding the music with almost an early 70s Impulse Records vibe – as the flute and vibes have a great sense of warm exploration, amidst some other subtle sonic elements that really set the mood! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Planet E, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
One of the boldest statements we've heard from the Detroit underground in years – and a great reminder that the city's legendary club sound is still alive and well – if you know where to look! Terrence Parker serves up a set that makes the Planet E label very proud – and which also maybe hits even more soulful territory than that imprint in its early days – kind of a rising, merging mode that also absorbs some of the best Chicago and New York currents, yet still keeps things very straightforward, with that special Detroit crackle that's always made the city's club tracks so exciting! Parker works with a few guests on the album – Merachka and Coco Street – and the set's about half vocal, and half instrumental – with tracks that include "Just Like Musik (main mix)", "Bassment Beats (TP bassment mix)", "God Loves Detroit (The Resurrection)", "Latter Rain (healing rain mix)", "Let's Go", "Lift Yo Hands Raise Em High", "The Sabbath", "Transition", and "Will You ever Come Back To Me". A great little set of 80s soul from Greg Phillinganes – one of those 80s wunderkind soul talents who could do everything, from write and produce, to play keyboards and sing on the album. Given that Greg's handling a lot of the work himself, the album's got a feel that's almost in an early 80s Stevie Wonder mode – with some well written songs that would work well in a more intimate setting, and which stay very true to their spirit, as the composer's handling their creation all the way through. Includes a great version of "Girl Talk", plus "Big Man", "Forever Now", "Baby I Do Love You", "I Don't Want To Be The One", and "The Call". LP, Vinyl record album

The album's no breakout for the Pointer Sisters, as the trio were already at the top of the charts when the set was released – but the whole thing does find a great way to keep the grooves coming in the group's lasting relationship with producer Richard Perry! There's plenty of 80s elements here – basslines, beats, and keyboards – moving the group way past some of the club and pop modes of the 70s – and keeping them perfectly poised for long-term crossover fame for years to come! Case in point is the album's long-running hit "Jump (For My Love)", nestled alongside other cuts that include "Automatic", "I'm So Excited", "I Need You", "Neutron Dance", "Easy Persuasion", "Baby Come And Get It", "Telegraph Your Love", and "Operator". Eric SidayUltra Sonic Perception (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Berry/Dual Planet (Australia), Early 60s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $6.99 23.99
Very early electronic sound library material from Eric Siday – so much so, that all these tracks were originally issued as 78rpm singles – at a time before the sound library scene moved into using full LPs! A number of cuts here were used as early passages on the first Doctor Who episodes – and others follow nicely in a similar vein – with very bold, powerful explorations of the earliest elements of analogue electronics – and an especially strong ear for the darker side of the spectrum! Most numbers here are never too noisy – not as much so as avant compositional work of the time – but they hang on the edge in a really great way, creating a lot of stark spacey elements with just a few deft touches. Titles include "Comet", "Ultimate", "Moonscape", "Galaxy", "Suspended Animation", "The Machines", "Pavane", "Pizzicato Piano", "Challenge Of Space", and "Eclipse". LP, Vinyl record album

Moog and synth-heavy soundtrack to the early 80s nuclear horror B-Movie Chain Reaction! Composer Andrew Thomas Wilson pairs up elements of eerier synth and proggy rock inspired soundtracks by John Carpenter, Goblin and benchmark acts/composers of the period with some more droning, minimalist bits, and busy, nascent 80s electro pop and rock. Compelling stuff played on a mighty arsenal of period synthesizers and keyboards – mostly by Wilson himself, with only some additional help on guitar, drums and bass. A record that definitely belongs in the planetarium – given how spacey it sounds – thanks to work on a wide range of keyboards from Ian MacFarlane! This obscure set was originally released only as a cassette, but it's got a charm that really matches other electronic records of the period – particularly underground work from Europe, which often shares the same sort of cosmic vision as MacFarlane! The set's divided up into two phases – "First Theory – The Expanding Universe" – and "Second Theory – The Cyclic Universe" – each of which has a vibe that reflects their title. A great set from soul singer Marva King – an artist who never got a chance to record many albums, but who's strongly remembered for this early 80s gem! The cover's almost got a retro sort of look, and King brings a bit of that to her vocals – a strong old school depth, which is given a more contemporary focus by producer Richard Perry – but never in a way that sounds too commercial or overdone! Perry had worked great magic with other singers in the late 70s – and really brings his best to bear here, too – which helps Marva really glow and shine, as she moves through a set of titles that include "Feels Right", "Here We Go Again", "Two Lovers", "Isle Of Castaways", "Feeling Wonderful Feelings", and "Suspicions". A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Amazing music from one of our most-treasured stretches of David Bowie's career – that creatively-fertile time when he escaped to West Berlin, hid from the mainstream, and made some groundbreaking records with Brian Eno – then returned to the limelight to remind us all that he was still a hell of a force to be reckoned with! The set includes everything post-Thin White Duke, and pre-Let's Dance – a run of music that's still shaping new sounds on this planet all these many years later. The set begins with Low – the mix of experimental instrumentals and subtle vocal tracks that was a complete change from Ziggy Stardust – and follows with Heroes, Lodger, and Scary Monsters & Super Creeps – all albums that reintroduce some sense of song and lyrical interplay, but at a level that clearly indicates how important Bowie was to the generation of post-punk and new wave as his earlier work was to psych, prog, and glam! But the package isn't just a standard collection of albums – because along with those four studio records, it also features the live album Stage, presented here in two different full mixes – plus a new 2017 mix of Lodger, which really increases the edge. There's also a special Heroes EP, with all the different language versions of the song – and a very cool Re:Call 3 album – which features all the singles that were issued at the time, plus other rare material – and Bowie's very unique take on Bertolt Brecht's Baal. Titles on this album include "Alabama Song", "Crystal Japan", "Under Pressure", "Remembering Marie A", "The Drowned Girl", "The Dirty Song", "Cat People", and even his "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" duet with Bing Crosby. As with other entries in this complete Bowie series, the presentation is wonderful – album sleeve replicas, great packaging, and lots of notes – kind of a treasure, even if you already own some of the records! Okka Disk, 1998. Used 3 CDs ... $36.99
Very cool box set of 3 CDs' worth of material recorded by Peter Brotzmann and his amazing group of players on 2 trips to Chicago in the late 90s! The set – which is limited and numbered – features both live and studio performances by the Chicago Octet and Tentet, two provisional groups set up by Brotzmann comprised of Chicago mainstays – like Jeb Bishop, Ken Vandermark, and Hamid Drake – plus outsiders with ties to the Chicago avant scene – like Joe McPhee and Mats Gustafsson. The 3 CDs have an amazing amount of material, and are packaged in a handsomely crafted slipcase with a nice graphic. More excellent jazz from one of our favorite labels on the planet! Disc 1 ( live) includes long octet working of "Burning Spirit (For Kazuka Shiraishi)" plus tentet runs of "Other Brothers", "Old Bottles, No Wine" and "Aziz". Disc 2 features live tentet tracks "Divide By Zero" and "Foolish Infinity", and studio tentet tracks "Immediate Music" and "Makapoor". Tim BuckleySefronia ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A great later album from Tim Buckley – one that really shows him evolving his style in the last few years before his tragic early departure from this planet! Tim's working in a style here that's oddly heavier and with more bluesy overtones than some of his classic 60s albums for Elektra – almost reaching for a stronger style that competes with other singer-songwriters who were beating his action at the time! We're not saying that the album's slick or overly commercial – just recorded with a fuller sound, and less of the light jazz-tinged folk styles used in earlier years. A few of the tunes are done in the older Buckley mode, but others have strings, backing vocals, and other larger arrangements. Titles include "Quicksand", "I Know I'd Recognize Your Face", "Martha", "Peanut Man", "Dolphins", "Honey Man", "Because Of You", and "Sefronia – The King's Chain". LP, Vinyl record album

John ColtraneCosmic Music ... LP
Impulse/Superior Viaduct, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A set that really earns its title – as it's easily some of the most cosmic music John Coltrane ever recorded – and also kind of a way of saying goodbye to the planet, to leave his music in the hands of a next generation of creators! The album features material recorded by a Coltrane group in 1966, and an Alice Coltrane combo in 1968, after Coltrane's death – making it a great link between two moments in the group – especially since Pharoah Sanders plays tenor and Alice Coltrane plays piano on both tracks. The Coltrane tunes – "Manifestation" and "Reverend King" – both have a righteous raw power – and the Alice Coltrane numbers – "The Sun" and "Lord Help Me" – really showcase the slower-building spiritual energy that both she and Pharoah Sanders would carry on in their music. Great stuff throughout – and completely essential! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John ColtraneLove Supreme ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1964. Used ... $3.99
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for the album – which is a full-length suite of spiritual expression, one that gives even greater focus and message to Coltrane's long-spiralling style of soloing on the tenor sax! The group here is the classic quartet – McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – taking Trane up to the heavens on waves of modal energy, but also holding his spirit closer to the planet than on some of later, more outside performances. There's a slight bit of vocalization on the record – that chanted energy that imbues the set with so much love – and movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". CD

Not a live tour album from Sam Cooke – but a globally-themed batch of tunes that really helps show off his range as a singer! The set features tunes with titles that evoke a rich landscape of settings from around the world – and offer Sam a nice chance to change things up a bit from the usual – moving more into a mature vocal mode that's different than his more familiar soul singles! Glen Osser handled the arrangements, and the approach is similar to Sam's Hits Of The 50s record – in that it showcases a wider range of material that points the way to the huge pop potential Cooke could have had, if he hadn't left this planet so quickly. Titles include "Galway Bay", "London By Night", "Bali Hai", "Far Away Places", "The Coffee Song", "Arrivederci Roma", and "Jamaica Farewell". LP, Vinyl record album

The vocals have this raspy charm that definitely underscores Wilson's years on this planet – and the backings have this warmth and jazzy undercurrent that really works well with the sound of the tunes – a slight hint of sentiment, but never in a cloying way – just the perfect sort of balance to honor the talents and accomplishments of someone like Das Neves! Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2014. New Copy 2LP ... $9.99
Mark De Clive-Lowe takes us to church – with a set that's easily his most soulful, spiritual record ever! The album's got a lot more acoustic elements than usual – plenty of jazz elements on tenor, flute, trumpet, and percussion – mixed with Mark's own great Fender Rhodes and other keyboards – some of which shift the sound of the acoustic instruments in the process! The shift is a bit like that taken by Jimi Tenor with his own music in recent years, but the overall sound is still very much in the soaring, cosmic territory we've always loved from Mark – but there's also a much deeper connection to the planet as well. Wonderful throughout – a great step forward for an artist we already love so much – and titles include "Sketch For Miguel", "Now Or Never", "Nova Roda", "The Mission", "Distractions", "Mason's Galaxy", "Imam", and "Sun Up Sun Down". EmanativeEarth ... LP
Jazzman (UK), 2018. New Copy ... About June 19, 2018
Maybe the best music so far from Emanative – a group who've been kicking around the London scene for the past decade or so, but who really seem to hit a new level with this album on Jazzman! The group's led by percussionist Nick Woodmansey, who often steps back to let all the other spiritual elements flow through the sound in a wonderful way – including excellent piano and organ from the great Jessica Lauren, plus reeds from Tamar Osborn and Ben Hadwen – both players who have a very cosmic approach – and haunting percussion from additional players, in addition to Nick's own work on drums, balafon, and other instruments. There's a very strong bassist in the lineup, too – Suman Joshi – and he directs the proceedings with great strength when everyone comes together – but also knows enough to step back when things are exploring different planes of global consciousness at a more personal level. Titles include "Spice Route Suite", "Egosystem", "New Day", "Heaven's Mirror", "Iyaami", "Raga Requiem", and "Minutes To Midnight For This Planet". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Booker ErvinIn Between ... LP
Blue Note, 1968. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the last records that Booker Ervin ever recorded, and one of the best! There's a depth of tone and conception here that goes far beyond even Ervin's already-great albums for Prestige – a mix of modernism and soulful expression that really points the way towards jazz expression in the 70s – although sadly, Booker was to leave the planet before getting a chance to stretch out in that era. All 6 tracks on the album are originals – and they sparkle with the imagination found on some of the most top-shelf Blue Notes of the time – work by Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, or Wayne Shorter – played by a group that includes the amazing Richard Williams on trumpet (almost worth the price of the record alone), Bobby Few on piano, Lenny McBrowne on drums, and the little-known Cevera Jefferies on bass. Loads of dark edges, searing solos, and plenty of free flights into the sky – on titles that include "The In Between", "Tyra", "The Muse", "Mour", "Sweet Pea", and "Largo". LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful sounds throughout – and exactly the kind of record that shows why the right sort of Brazilian music can be so different than anything else on this planet – not really jazz, not really folk, nor straightforward pop – but the kind of special sounds that define a genre unto themselves! The record's a warmly collaborative effort from the trio of Romero Lubambo on guitar, Mauro Senise on saxes and flute, and the great Edu Lobo on voice and compositions – songs pulled from his decades-long contribution to Brazilian music, given a very special, very personal performance by the group! Lobo always had a way of balancing up-close performance with loftier arrangements – and here, that latter side of his music is pulled away, to bring the singer even more strongly into the limelight – as he gets very warm accompaniment from both of the other lead players. What can we say? This is one of the greatest albums of all time! The record's got a sound that's completely unique – as crack LA garage punk rock meets Hollywood baroque production, and the result is an amazing bit of loud guitar noise backed by strings and horns, all graced by the godlike vocals of the great Arthur Lee. Forever Changes is a milestone in rock – an incredibly bleak document about insanity, escape, and the coming revolution that never happened. Think of all the best moments of Wild In The Streets, Zabriske Point, and Invocation of My Demon Brother rolled into one – and you'll only have a tiny slice of the picture! A record that will haunt us until the day we die – filled with incredible songs like "Alone Again Or", "Old Man", "Daily Planet", "Red Telephone", and "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark & Hilldale". This fantastic package is the most comprehensive we've ever seen of the album – one that maybe even outdoes efforts like this for records by The Beach Boys or Velvet Underground! CD1 features the album in stereo, CD 2 features the album in mono, CD 3 features an obscure alternate mix, and CD4 features singles and outtakes – including "Wonder People (outtake)", "Alone Again Or (mono single)", "Laughing Stock", "Your Mind & We Belong Together (tracking session highlights)", "Wooly Bully (outtake)", "Hummingbirds (demo)", "A House Is Not A Motel (single)", "Red Telephone (tracking session)", "Live & Let Live (backing track)", "Andmoreagain (alt electric backing track)", and "A House is Not A Motel (backing track)". Also comes with a DVD that features 24/96 remaster of the album – and a rare promo film from 1968! Also includes the album on 180 gram vinyl. And includes a booklet with liner notes, including track by track notes by author Ted Olson. CD

The set shows the increasing sophistication of Mingus' music in these later years – a mode that almost echoes the path that Duke Ellington would take in his final decade – a move towards some larger-form material that still holds onto all the raw energy of the early days, but finds a way to not only bridge larger musical ideas – but musical generations as well! As part of this, the set's got a wonderful lineup – with Lee Konitz on alto, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, George Coleman on tenor, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – and titles include the long title track, "Something Like A Bird", split up over 2 sides of the LP, plus "Farewell Farwell". Wes MontgomeryRoad Song ... CD
A&M/Verve (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $18.99
Beautifully lofty work from the great Wes Montgomery – a set that was recorded quite late in his too-short career, and really points the way towards some of the sophisticated sounds that might have followed, had Wes not left this planet all too soon! Don Sebesky is at the head of the charts this time around, and while the vibe echoes some of the other work that Montgomery did with larger backings in the period, there's also a nice current of darkness too – this intensity that can come through, even if the tune is a familiar pop number. The ensemble is filled with great players – Herbie Hancock and Hank Jones on piano, Stan Webb on flute, Grady Tate on drums, and Ray Barretto on percussion – and titles include "I'll Be Back", "Road Song", "Yesterday", "Serene", "Green Leaves Of Summer", and "Fly Me To The Moon". A massive package of early music from The New York Dolls – tracks that really expand on their too-slim catalog from the first few years! The set begins with two CDs worth of demos by the group – very rough-edged, pre-punk material that's got an even sharper feel than their initial albums for Mercury – really showing the group in all their sneering splendor! The package features tracks recorded at Blue Rock and Planet Studios in New York, and Escape Studios in London – 36 early demos that include "Pills", "Bad Girl", "Babylon", "Personality Crisis", "Endless Party", "Jet Boy", "It's Too Late", "Lonely Planet Boy", "Subway Train", "Private World", "Trash", "Don't Start Me Talkin", "Frankenstein", "Human Being", "Looking For A Kiss", and "Who Are The Mystery Girls". CDs 3, 4, and 5 all feature live material – recorded in Paris and Detroit in 1973; then Long Island, Vancouver, and Dallas in 1974 – and back home in New York in 1975. There's a total of 56 live tracks here – really essential material, given how important the live version of the New York Dolls were to the pre-punk generation, and many others who took inspiration from their sense of performance in later years! Intakt (Switzerland), 2018. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Pianist Aruan Ortiz really blows us away here – working on three long tracks that show a completely unique approach to the piano, but one that's as melodically pleasing as it is experimental! The trio features the great Chad Taylor on drums, and also on a bit of mbira – and Ortiz really seems to have resonance with him, as he plays these piano notes that as rhythmic as they are tuneful – balanced out by some occasional freer elements from bassist Brad Jones, whose mostly a player who has the same sense of deep soul that we love in Taylor's approach. All three musicians are a real revelation, and the long performance also features a bass solo from Jones, and inventive arrangements of slices of Chopin and Ornette Coleman. Wonderful throughout – and the kind of illuminating record that will make us dig for new jazz records until we leave this planet! CD

With zero gravity, there's nothing to hold Nik Pascal to the planet – and he's definitely very far out in space with his electronics on this set! The album's one of the brilliant self-released early 70s gems from Nik Pascal/Nik Raicevic – a completely unique sub-strand of electronic music that's very different than the sounds coming from the prog, university, or pop electronic scenes at the time! Instead, Nik uses simple instruments – just a moog and Arp here – but in ways that are as personal as they are dark and spooky – prefacing later electronic creations of this sort from the art and industrial undergrounds, and still very much in his own space all these many years later. The sound's a bit different than usual – as you'd expect – and the tracks are short haunting numbers, designed to accompany the film's erratic narrative – with a mixture of electric playing, spacey jazz, and a few surprisingly out numbers! Titles include "Watusa", "Calling Planet Earth", "Mysterious Crystal", "Outerspaceways Incorporated", "Cosmic Force", "Satellites Are Spinning", and a version of "Space Is The Place". 74 minutes of music in all – and stuff that you'll never find on vinyl! Fantastic late live material by Sun Ra and the Arkestra – presented here properly for the first time ever – with fantastic sound, and the full contents of two different sets – which really lets you get to hear the Arkestra at their best! Each concert is a wonderful progression of material – and really show the way that, near the end of Ra's life, the group was able to embrace so many different generations of jazz at once – sounding straight one minute, out the next, leaning trad at others, and snapping back with a sense of modernity that's still years ahead of its time! June Tyson and Michael Ray sing on a few tracks – and John Gilmore even sings once, too – and the group features Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on flute and alto, James Jacson on flute and bassoon, Tyrone Hill on trombone, Knoel Scott on alto, Jothan Callins on bass, Charles Davis on baritone, and Ahmed Abdullah and Michael Ray on trumpets. As with most Arkestra concerts, the transition between moods and songs is what really makes this set great – with lots of unique moments that further our faith in the live Sun Ra experience. Really wonderful work from Sun Ra – a host of recordings cut at the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Fest in the early 70s – always a very welcoming audience for the Arkestra at the time! We're not sure what was in the water, but it always seems like the group really hit their stride at the festival – opening up with a force and intensity that really goes past some of their other recordings! It's almost as if the enthusiastic mix of ages and cultures present really ignited the best energies in the Arkestra – having them hit the kind of righteous crescendo of their best Space Is The Place identity – and even some of the more avant, outside moments have a focus that the group hardly seems to reach this well! The material is from the John Sinclair archives – originally issued on the CDs Life Is Splendid, Outer Space Employment Agency, and It Is Forbidden – but somehow sounding even more amazing in a tight package like this – with loads of amazing keyboards from Ra, soulful vocals from June Tyson, Cheryl Banks, and Judith Holton, and wonderful supporting reeds from the Arkestra. Titles include "Space Is The Place", "Enlightenment", "What Planet Is This", "Immeasurable", "Love In Outer Space", "Watusi", "Images", and some great untitled improvisations. CD

Chip lists both of these musicians as key influence in the notes, and we can definitely hear that in the music, too – which is a mix of modal groovers and more spacious numbers that blossom with Strata East-like energy – all handled by a great quartet that features Chip on both flute and tenor, plus Gabriel Casanova on piano, David Salvador on bass, and Antonio Pax on both drums and vibes. The music also has some hip European echoes – with styles that recall older work by Harold McNair on the flute numbers, or maybe the best of the Saba/MPS acoustic years. Fantastic sounds from the unique musical crossroads of Cape Verde – an island culture that's closest to Africa in geographical terms, but which also has a strong influence from European colonization, and some shared musical modes from the Caribbean scene! Later Cape Verdean global stars have perhaps come across with a more iconic approach – but the work here is from the earliest years of independence, and shows a culture ready to reach out, bring in new ideas, and send them back out to the rest of the planet with a new sense of pride! Some cuts here remind us of the best Caribbean club from the start of the 80s, other cuts have some of that electro soul spirit that was bubbling in the post-colonial scene in Paris – and still others have maybe more of a rootsier approach, with lots of guitars in the rhythm, of a mode you might hear in West African music. Woody Guthrie left this planet all too soon – in 1967, after years of struggle with Huntington's Disease – but not before leaving behind generations of singers and musicians who were forever in debt to his work! Some of the best of those artists came together here – in two legendary live tributes to Woody – one from 1968 at Carnegie Hall, the other from 1970 at the Hollywood Bowl – with amazing performances from Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Jack Elliot, Richie Havens, Tom Paxton, Odetta, Pete Seeger, and others – and accompaniment on the Carnegie set by The Band, and work on the Hollywood concert by Ry Cooder and other west coast musicians. Both shows are presented here in their entirety – along with 20 tracks that never appeared on the original albums – with all songs in their original performance order, as well as original narration by Peter Fonda, Robert Ryan, and Will Geer. But even along with the music – which might be expensive here for just 3 CDs – the set also features two different hardcover books – over 240 pages between them – with a huge amount of photos, images, writings, and other details that document these amazing events – packaged in a handsome slipcover too.
