Chico Mann & Captain PlanetNight Visions ... CD
Bastard Jazz (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $7.99
One of the most tuneful albums we've ever heard from Chico Mann – and a set that moves into much more song-based territory than some of his earlier work! The style here is a unique hybrid of beats, breaks, and Latin – almost in a mode that could crack a larger global market, if the right forces were in place – with very catchy Spanish-language songs that are perfect for the dancefloor! There's echoes of more mainstream modes in the approach, but the overall presentation is as hip as you'd expect from Chico and Captain Planet – on titles that include "Can't Let Go", "Somos Candela", "Oye Bien", "Como Me Miras", "La Oscuridad", "Cuentos De Anoche", and a remake of Manu Dibango's "New Bell". PS Artbooks (UK), 1948/1949. New Copy ... $9.99 47.99
A fantastic volume of work from one of the first science fiction comics ever – a publication that picked up right where the sci-fi pulps left off – although with artwork that was a lot more stunning! This volume presents great late 40s material from Planet Comics – from a time when the scripts and artwork were showing even more polish and care than ever before – which made for even more vivid "space opera" stories in the publication's trademark style! The hardcover book presents the full contents of each issue – including text pages, all stories, and even some vintage ads – and this volume features art by George Evans, Graham Ingels, Matt Baker, Leonard Starr, Enrico Bagnoli, and others. The continuing genius of Planet Comics – one of the first-ever comics devoted entirely to science fiction stories – still going strong here in the early 50s! Unlike some of its contemporaries during the stretch, Planet never got too creepy or too exploitative – but did use the growing comic market to really hone its craft, and perfect the kind of longer-form stories with recurring characters that made the magazine a real hit with audiences young and old. Female characters are as strong as the guys – and the art throughout is wonderful – with top-shelf work from artists who include George Evans, Leonard Starr, Enrico Bagnoli, Frank Bolle, Graham Ingels, Lee Elias, and others. A landmark science fiction publication from the earliest days of comic books – presented here in a heavy, hardbound format! The book is a great way to experience this otherwise-rare comic – and it's done in the heavy style of DC's Archive Editions, or the Marvel Masterworks volumes – both from those two more famous publishers. The stories here are all from the start of the 40s, and have kind of a stark, spare adventure mode that's a bit like early Timely Comics – with more of a Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon sort of space hero in the lead on most of them. And while the writing is sometimes a bit clunky, the artwork is fantastic – done by giants like Fletcher Hanks, Bob Powell, George Tuska, Sid Greene, and others – often with this style that's surprisingly creepy, and which shows up beautifully in this well-done publication. 288 pages, full color, on heavy paper, and hardcover. A great little groover from this obscure ultra-righteous group! "Getaway Train" is an electric piano jammer with lots of snapping percussion at the bottom – chugging along in a fast-riffing funky style, with the sweet keys dancing over the top! Screamin Jay HawkinsPlanet Sessions (Night & Day Of Screamin Jay Hawkins – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Planet/Ace (UK), 1965. New Copy ... $8.99 18.98
An incredible lost moment in the career of Screamin Jay Hawkins – material that was recorded in London in the mid 60s, and with a very different flavor than most of Hawkins' other material! There's a mod jazz approach to this set that's totally great – as Jay's raw vocals come into play with a sweet-grooving Hammond, in a combo that also features some sharp work on guitar, and some strong sax solos too! The upbeat, jazzy vibe is totally great – and gives Screamin Jay a whole new focus for his vocals – and for his songwriting, too – as most of the material here is original. And while Hawkins is always best remembered for his spooky, gimmicky cuts, this material is equally great in a totally different way – and, if it were pursued further, might have given the man a whole new direction in his career. Make no mistake, there's still plenty here to love if you're a longtime fan of Screamin Jay Hawkins – but you'll also really appreciate the mod grooves in the set as well! Titles include "I Wanna Know", "In My Dream", "Change Your Ways", "Serving Time", "Please Forgive Me", "Move Me", "My Marion", and "All Night". Plus, CD features a whopping 12 bonus tracks – a few alternate takes, and other versions of album songs – plus the titles "I'm Lonely" and "Stone Crazy". CD

A sweet single that re-presents two tracks from the La Sombra album by Chip Wickham – one of our favorite spiritual jazz sets in recent years! "Red Planet" takes off into cosmic broken beat territory – more electrified complex rhythms driving at the core, while Chip's flute still gets a bit of a solo over the top! Carlos Nino brings his heady touch to "La Sombra" – really expanding the music with almost an early 70s Impulse Records vibe – as the flute and vibes have a great sense of warm exploration, amidst some other subtle sonic elements that really set the mood! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Golden Years (UK), 1973. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The early 70s Arkestra at the height of their power – recorded in a brilliant live set from 1973, one that showcases the bold soul of the Impulse years! There's a resonance here with other spiritual jazz experiments going on in the US at the time – and Ra and the 25 members strong group seem firmly committed to exploring new freedoms in jazz, yet still work with messages that can reach out to a larger group – themes explored vocally on versions of "Astro Black", "Enlightenment", and "Space Is The Place", juxtaposed by longer instrumental passages that have a cohesiveness that's sometimes missing from other live sets. Disc 1 includes a pair of untitled improvisions, "Astro Black", "Discipline 27", "Space Is The Place", "Enlightenment" and "Love In Outerspace". Disc 2 includes "The Shadow World", "Watusa, Egyptian March" and "Discipline 27-II (What Planet Is This/The Universe Sent Me To Converse With You/My Brother The Sun". CD

Not the American group of Detroit techno fame from the 80s, but a cool 70s duo from Australia who work here in a host of cool electronics all played live! The approach is very organic, and a lot more vibrant than the modes of some of their German contemporaries – not nearly as cerebral or contemplative, and instead really taking off in a groove that seems to feature lots of improvisation, while still holding onto a very rhythmic approach overall! Planet/Sony (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $13.99
A great set from soul singer Marva King – an artist who never got a chance to record many albums, but who's strongly remembered for this early 80s gem! The cover's almost got a retro sort of look, and King brings a bit of that to her vocals – a strong old school depth, which is given a more contemporary focus by producer Richard Perry – but never in a way that sounds too commercial or overdone! Perry had worked great magic with other singers in the late 70s – and really brings his best to bear here, too – which helps Marva really glow and shine, as she moves through a set of titles that include "Feels Right", "Here We Go Again", "Two Lovers", "Isle Of Castaways", "Feeling Wonderful Feelings", and "Suspicions". Dual Planet (Australia), 1982. New Copy ... $4.99 16.99
Seedy synth soundtrack genius from the early 80s! Turkey Shoot is a pretty notorious slice of early 80s Oz-sploitation cinema – and composer Brian May makes it all the more memorable with his soundtrack work here. It got some brief percussion and strings-heavy bits, but it's main style is eerie, brooding analog synth sounds by May – who is probably best known for his soundtracks to the first two Mad Max movies – and works quite nicely here in style that reminds us a bit of John Carpenter in the late 70s and early 80s. Includes "Turkey Shoot Theme", "Suitable Targets", "Nightfall", "Tractor Pursuit", "Cut Him Down To Size", "Hot & Ready", "Swamp Escape/Beach Fight", "Don't Worry My Dear, He Has Already Eaten", "Crossbow Standoff", "Shrunken Heads", "All Deviants Report To Centre Compound" and more. One of the boldest statements we've heard from the Detroit underground in years – and a great reminder that the city's legendary club sound is still alive and well – if you know where to look! Terrence Parker serves up a set that makes the Planet E label very proud – and which also maybe hits even more soulful territory than that imprint in its early days – kind of a rising, merging mode that also absorbs some of the best Chicago and New York currents, yet still keeps things very straightforward, with that special Detroit crackle that's always made the city's club tracks so exciting! Parker works with a few guests on the album – Merachka and Coco Street – and the set's about half vocal, and half instrumental – with tracks that include "Just Like Musik (main mix)", "Bassment Beats (TP bassment mix)", "God Loves Detroit (The Resurrection)", "Latter Rain (healing rain mix)", "Let's Go", "Lift Yo Hands Raise Em High", "The Sabbath", "Transition", and "Will You ever Come Back To Me". And while the bulk of the record really shows the influence of these mainstream 80s soul artists – and not always in a good way – the record also sports a brilliant tune done with Donald Fagan of Steely Dan, the sweetly grooving "Lazy Nina", which sounds like the best work off Fagan's Nightfly, and has Greg and Don duetting on vocals! Titles include "Behind The Mask", "Signals", "Shake It", "Countdown To Love", "Come As You Are", and "Playin With Fire". Berry/Dual Planet (Australia), Early 60s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99 23.99
Very early electronic sound library material from Eric Siday – so much so, that all these tracks were originally issued as 78rpm singles – at a time before the sound library scene moved into using full LPs! A number of cuts here were used as early passages on the first Doctor Who episodes – and others follow nicely in a similar vein – with very bold, powerful explorations of the earliest elements of analogue electronics – and an especially strong ear for the darker side of the spectrum! Most numbers here are never too noisy – not as much so as avant compositional work of the time – but they hang on the edge in a really great way, creating a lot of stark spacey elements with just a few deft touches. Titles include "Comet", "Ultimate", "Moonscape", "Galaxy", "Suspended Animation", "The Machines", "Pavane", "Pizzicato Piano", "Challenge Of Space", and "Eclipse". LP, Vinyl record album

Classic sounds from Franco & OK Jazz – one of the coolest groups going in the Congo in the 50s – and an ensemble whose approach paved the way for many other acts to come! The music here is all from the final years of Belgian rule, but already represents a flowering of newly independent ideas – music that embraces some of the jazz in the group's name, particularly on the solo phrasing of the guitar and saxophone – but which also has lots of Latin influence in the rhythms – as kind of an early example of the sounds of Cuba coming back to influence their African roots! A sweet one from The Pointer Sisters – with an opening track that's permanently tattooed to the memory of just about anyone who lived through the era, but better than that, a bunch of great songs that are comparably slept on all these years later! So Excited is a great example of a very solid set of period soulful grooves that you might be tempted to pass on due to extreme exhaustion from the biggest hit – don't do that! If we had to choose, we'd say the music is maybe more like New York punk than the sound of London – especially in the way that some of these acts are very open to other sounds and influences, while still serving up a song with a short sharp shock. Titles include "Paris Maquis" by Metal Urbain, "Photo Coleur" by A3 Dans Les WC, "Planet Comme Un Prive" by Aslpalt Jungle, "Sally" by Gazoline, "Sweet Marilyn" by Metal Boys, "Rien A Dire" by Marie Et Les Garcons, "Wolf City Blues" by Angel Face, "Mind" by Kas Product, "Broken Windows" by Warm Gun, "Electrifie" by Calcinator, "I Don't Wanna Be A Rich" by Guilty Razors, and "Euthenasie" by Les Olivensteins. Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1973. New Copy ... About September 29, 2017 (delayed)
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". LP, Vinyl record album

BBC/Silva Screen, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
Weird and wonderful sounds from one of the coolest spots in the universe – the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop, home to a mix of surprisingly groovy and experimental electronic music! This album was issued on the 25th anniversary of the sonic institution – and it features a strong mix of older analogue styles with some more 80s-oriented electronics – yet still with all the depth you'd expect from the Radiophonic Workshop during its classic years! These aren't tinny slasher keyboards, or electro pop programs – and instead, the music here is as thoughtful and compelling as the sounds created during the Delia Derbyshire generation – but are handled by artists who include Peter Howell, Paddy Kingsland, Dick Mills, Jonathan Gibbs, Elizabeth Parker, and Malcolm Clarke. Titles include "Mainstream", "Radiophonic Rock", "Computers In The Real World", "Rallyman", "Seascape", "Land & People", "Houdini's Magic Box", "Ghost In The Water", "Planet Earth", and "Catch The Wind". Parlophone, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 11CD ... $138.99 149.98
Amazing music from one of our most-treasured stretches of David Bowie's career – that creatively-fertile time when he escaped to West Berlin, hid from the mainstream, and made some groundbreaking records with Brian Eno – then returned to the limelight to remind us all that he was still a hell of a force to be reckoned with! The set includes everything post-Thin White Duke, and pre-Let's Dance – a run of music that's still shaping new sounds on this planet all these many years later. The set begins with Low – the mix of experimental instrumentals and subtle vocal tracks that was a complete change from Ziggy Stardust – and follows with Heroes, Lodger, and Scary Monsters & Super Creeps – all albums that reintroduce some sense of song and lyrical interplay, but at a level that clearly indicates how important Bowie was to the generation of post-punk and new wave as his earlier work was to psych, prog, and glam! But the package isn't just a standard collection of albums – because along with those four studio records, it also features the live album Stage, presented here in two different full mixes – plus a new 2017 mix of Lodger, which really increases the edge. There's also a special Heroes EP, with all the different language versions of the song – and a very cool Re:Call 3 album – which features all the singles that were issued at the time, plus other rare material – and Bowie's very unique take on Bertolt Brecht's Baal. Titles on this album include "Alabama Song", "Crystal Japan", "Under Pressure", "Remembering Marie A", "The Drowned Girl", "The Dirty Song", "Cat People", and even his "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" duet with Bing Crosby. As with other entries in this complete Bowie series, the presentation is wonderful – album sleeve replicas, great packaging, and lots of notes – kind of a treasure, even if you already own some of the records! Peter BuckI Am Back To Blow Your Mind Once Again ... LP
Mississippi, 2014. New Copy ... $8.99
A second dose of solo weirdness from Peter Buck – who's best known, of course, as guitarist and co-founder of REM – but he's also done cool and interesting stuff with the Minus Five, The Baseball Project and more in the post REM years – and we admire the heck of his freewheeling solo stuff, too! This one's filled with skronky blues rockers and poetic acoustic tunes alike, with lots of dissonant guitars and unpredictable twists and turns. Other players include Scott McCaughey and other frequent collaborators and special guests. Includes "Ride That Road", "My Slobbering Decline", "Life Is Short", "Southerner", "Here In Heaven", "(You Must Fight To Live) On The Planet Of The Apes", "Welcome To The Party", "Drown With Me", "West Of Sunset", "Roswell" and more. ✨✧ Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... CD
DiscReet/Manifesto, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". CD

✨✧ Tim BuckleySefronia ... CD
DiscReet/Manifesto, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great later album from Tim Buckley – one that really shows him evolving his style in the last few years before his tragic early departure from this planet! Tim's working in a style here that's oddly heavier and with more bluesy overtones than some of his classic 60s albums for Elektra – almost reaching for a stronger style that competes with other singer-songwriters who were beating his action at the time! We're not saying that the album's slick or overly commercial – just recorded with a fuller sound, and less of the light jazz-tinged folk styles used in earlier years. A few of the tunes are done in the older Buckley mode, but others have strings, backing vocals, and other larger arrangements. Titles include "Quicksand", "I Know I'd Recognize Your Face", "Martha", "Peanut Man", "Dolphins", "Honey Man", "Because Of You", and "Sefronia – The King's Chain". CD

Dennis CoffeyLive Wire – The Westbound Years 1975 to 1978 ... CD
Westbound (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
The later years of Dennis Coffey at Westbound Records – tunes that show a bit of a move away from the rougher funk of his roots, but which are still filled with plenty of sharp-edged work on guitar! Coffey's groove here is more in the club vein that Westbound hit in the mid 70s – upbeat, uptempo rhythms that drew strongly on the label's earlier legacy in funk – but pushed a groove more towards the popular disco styles of the time! Yet Coffey's tunes are never throwaway disco – and from the perspective of these many decades later, they're really just fast funk numbers with a bit of strings – still heavy on tightly snapping rhythms, and filled with loads of beautiful guitar lines from Dennis. This hip package from Ace goes out of its way to focus on the funkiest bits from these years – and the set features 15 titles that include "Wild Child", "Live Wire", "Some Like It Hot", "Free Spirit", "Back Home", "Finger Lickin Good (7" version)", "Sweet Taste Of Sin", "Calling Planet Earth (12" version)", "High On Love", "Gimme That Funk (7" version)", and "Our Love Goes On Forever". The John Coltrane sound stretching out to Infinity – beautifully collaborating core spiritual sounds recorded when The Great One was still alive, and later string passages done by Alice Coltrane in the early 70s! The initial tracks are very open and almost easygoing – not the full-on outside expressions of some other Coltrane unreleased sides from the time, but the more cosmic sound of Love Supreme – carried out by musicians that include Alice Coltrane on harp, piano, and organ – plus Pharoah Sanders on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison and Charlie Haden on bass, Rashied Ali on percussion, and Elvin Jones on drums. The strings are surprisingly wonderful, too – kind of linking the Coltrane and post-Coltrane generations in ways that are really marvelous, and filled with the kind of majesty that Coltrane should have deserved while still on this planet! Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for the album – which is a full-length suite of spiritual expression, one that gives even greater focus and message to Coltrane's long-spiralling style of soloing on the tenor sax! The group here is the classic quartet – McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – taking Trane up to the heavens on waves of modal energy, but also holding his spirit closer to the planet than on some of later, more outside performances. There's a slight bit of vocalization on the record – that chanted energy that imbues the set with so much love – and movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". Frank Cunimondo TrioSagittarius ... CD
Mondo/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
A fantastic album by one of the greatest funky keyboard players of the 70s! Frank Cunimondo may have never made it out of his native Pittsburgh during much of the decade, but albums like this will forever ensure that his name be known in the ranks of groovers everywhere! The album features Frank working with his regular trio – but unlike some of his other earlier sessions, this one's got a large amount of work on electric piano, which brings a whole new dimension to Frank's playing! The album kicks off with "Sagittarius", a 12 minute groover that runs along with electric piano solos at top pace, like some of Charles Earland's best work on the Leaving This Planet album. Next up is an 8 minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", done with lots of funky work on the ARP, squeaking and grooving away in a style that would make Herbie proud! Side two begins with the 14 minute original "Slalom", a cool dark number that builds and builds, adding in more keyboards and getting slowly funkier, in kind of a Bob James mode. Last up is "Samba Nova", a short little bossa number that chills things down nicely. A great little album – and rare as hen's teeth! CD

Mark De Clive-Lowe takes us to church – with a set that's easily his most soulful, spiritual record ever! The album's got a lot more acoustic elements than usual – plenty of jazz elements on tenor, flute, trumpet, and percussion – mixed with Mark's own great Fender Rhodes and other keyboards – some of which shift the sound of the acoustic instruments in the process! The shift is a bit like that taken by Jimi Tenor with his own music in recent years, but the overall sound is still very much in the soaring, cosmic territory we've always loved from Mark – but there's also a much deeper connection to the planet as well. The blend of lightness and depth here is wonderful – a nice change from the usual underground soul material, as is Charlotte's lyrical approach – almost as lightly poetic as her voice, but more solid too – with a vibe that's completely unique, and which (we hope!) means that we'll be hearing plenty from her in years to come!
