Phineas NewbornWorld Of Piano (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Contemporary/Craft, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
Maybe not a "world" of piano, but a real classic from Phineas Newborn – a record that marks a harder, more soulful sound than some of his 50s work – shaking free from some of his flowery touches on the keys, and digging much deeper into the groove of his Memphis roots! The sound here is really tremendous – boldly leaping forth from the keys with a strength that's really surprising – but still sensitive enough to slide in a few more contemplative notes when the moment calls – sometimes while Newborn is still racing down the keys at breakneck speed! Rhythm on both sides is great – with Paul Chambers & Philly Joe Jones on side one, and Sam Jones and Louis Hayes on side two – and titles include "Cheryl", "Manteca", "Oleo", "Dahoud", "Cabu", and "For Carl". ✨✧ Phineas NewbornBack Home ... LP
Contemporary, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Previously unreleased material recorded by Phineas Newborn for Contemporary Records – a set that has him ringing out the notes in ways that are almost earthier than in earlier years – sometimes bluesy, but other times with almost a more traditional approach to the keys! There's a timeless sensibility here that's a bit hard to describe – and you can definitely hear that Phineas has been soaking it up strongly over the years, and works hard to get his musical vision out in the studio – sometimes sacrificing his lighter touch for a stiffer, almost startling approach to the keys. Ray Brown is on bass and Elvin Jones is on drums – and titles include "Sugar Ray", "Ill Wind", "Back Home", "Pamela", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "Love For Sale". LP, Vinyl record album

Teddy Edwards & Howard McGheeTogether Again (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Contemporary/Craft, 1961. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99 On August 9, 2024
Two of the best west coast boppers of the postwar years – back together again in a killer revival date cut by Contemporary Records! As the title implies, the set's got a backward-looking sort of feel – at least for the early 60s recording date – but from the perspective of our generation, the whole thing merges nicely into the classic sound of LA bop – perhaps extending out the original Central Ave groove a bit more, thanks to the generous recording spirit of Contemporary, and the longer tracks on the date. Edwards plays tenor, McGhee plays trumpet, and other players include Phineas Newborn on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. Titles include "Together Again", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "Up There", "Perhaps", "Misty" and "Sandy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sound Series!) This item will not be delivered to you before Friday, August 9.
