Miles DavisMilestones (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1958. Used ... $3.99
One of our 50s favorites by Miles Davis – and a record that offers the same twin-sax sound as his classic Kind Of Blue – with both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley working alongside Miles in the group! Rhythm here is by the Prestige-era trio of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – but it's the two saxophonists who really help Davis shape the feel of the record, pushing things past the initial Coltrane/Davis groove with a really wonderful sense of space and sound! Titles include the classic "Milestones", plus "Two Bass Hit", "Dr Jeckyll", and "Sid's Ahead". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – alternate takes of "Milestones", "Straight No Chaser", and "Two Bass Hit". CD

Salsoul OrchestraMagic Journey ... CD
Salsoul, 1977. Used ... $11.99
Ahhhh . . . The Salsoul Orchestra at its finest, with Vince Montana at the helm, crafting some superb arrangements that have all of the positivity of the best funky club groove that made the group great – without any of the disco schlock of their contemporaries! The group's format is still head and shoulders above most of its imitators here – a perfect balance of larger orchestrations and tighter rhythms for the club – handled with all the best Philly elements that Montana brings to play. Titles include the superb soul track "Run Away", which features excellent lead vocals by Loleatta Holloway – one of her best tracks ever – and other instrumental titles include the funky "Getaway", plus "Magic Bird Of Fire", "It's A New Day", and "Alpha Centuri". Bunny SiglerLet Me Party With You (UK pressing with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve/Big Break (UK), 1977. Used ... $9.99
One of the best of Bunny Sigler's disco albums – a classic pairing with a the group Instant Funk, and a record that helped define the second generation of the Philly groove! Bunny's still got some of the sweeter touches of earlier years, but he also comes across with a much fuller vocal range – stepping up to the grooves with a voice that's deep in soul, and which unfolds nicely across the album's longer uptempo tracks! The Instant Funk backing is mighty nice too – and really gives the album a sharp edge that sets it apart from other Sigler efforts of the period. Titles include "Let Me Party With You", "Your Love Is So Good", "Don't Even Try", and "I Got What You Need". Bonus tracks include "Only You" and ""Let Me Party With You (single version)". CD

✨✧ Black IceI Judge The Funk ... CD
Transcontinent/Traffic, 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost bit of ensemble funk from the end of the 70s – served up in a mix of bass-heavy club and boogie styles! The group have a rolling groove that's a bit like some of the work by Instant Funk or other clubby funk acts – but the overall feel is a bit tighter and more small group-oriented, even though the end result is as tight and professional as anything coming out on some of the bigger labels at the time – making for a great mix of indie and mainstream funky club styles! Our favorite cuts may actually be the mellower ones – which have some great soul harmonies – but even the uptempo tracks are pretty nice, with a strong Philly-inspired sound overall – and titles include "Postcard Love Affair", "My Fantasy", "Push", "There You Go", "Fantasize", "I Judge The Funk", and "You're Always on My Mind". ✨✧ John ColtraneBlue Train ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really cooking at full strength! The groove here is a bit harder, heavier, and hardbop-inflected than some of Trane's late 50s sides with Red Garland – thanks to a lineup that features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's a crisp modern edge to the record that really holds up beautifully – even after years of play – and titles include "Blue Train, "Locomotion", "Moment's Notice", and "Lazy Bird". CD

✨✧ Freddie HubbardHere To Stay ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great session that was recorded by Freddie Hubbard in the 60s, but not issued by Blue Note until the mid 70s – and only then as part of a short-lived double length set! This version is the first real issue of the material – with the original cover art intended for the session in the 60s – and as such, it's presented in a way that helps it stand strongly with Freddie's best early albums for Blue Note! The sound here is sharp-edged and soulful – a reflection of the groove that Freddie was hitting in the Jazz Messengers of the early 60s, played by a group that features three members of that ensemble – Wayne Shorter on tenor, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass – along with Philly Joe Jones on drums! Tracks are hard, straight, and soulful – not bogged down in some of Hubbard's misdirected modernism – and titles include "Philly Mignon", "Father & Son", "Nostrand & Fulton", and "Assunta". CD

✨✧ Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesAll Things Happen In Time ... CD
MCA/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A post-Philly International album from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, but one that still keeps their groove very much intact – thanks to instrumental help from Norman Harris, Ron Baker, Vince Montana, Earl Young, and a host of other Sigma Sound talents! Although recorded in the early 80s, the set's actually got a stripped-down quality that really reminds us of the earliest days of Philly International – kind of a back-to-basics approach that really works well for The Blue Notes, at a time when so many other groups might have been tempted to push off into clunkier territory. We might miss Teddy Pendergrass a bit in the lead, but the vocals are still totally top-shelf – very much in the best group soul mode of the time – and titles include "Hang On In There", "Come Go With Me", "Ain't That Love", "Tell Me Why", "I'm In Love With You", and "Have I Told You I Love You Today". ✨✧ RootsPhrenology (limited edition CD & DVD) ... CD
MCA, 2002. Used CD & DVD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A new hip hop soul masterpiece!!! On Things Fall Apart ?uestlove, Black Thought, DJ Scratch, Rahzel and co. reinvigorated the scene with a Philly style soulful, melancholy groove that seemingly influenced the entirety of the NuSoul world – and it could even be argued that the Roots birthed that whole scene. Phrenology carries that torch, but it's so, SO much more, as the heady nature weighed the previous LP down in spots, and Phrenology is a sprawling exercise in expectation-busting perfection! "Rock You" kicks things off in explosive fashion, forgoing the laid back, yet angry soul backbone the group pioneered in hop hop, for a massive electro pulse pounding style – with Black Thought frenetically spitting confrontational wisdom until the synth unexpectedly dives into a short burst of live hardcore punk with "!!!!!!!" (we know what you're thinking, but trust us, it REALLY works). "Sacrifice" features a surprisingly effective chorus sung by Nelly Furtado, and other guest spots include Kweli heating up "Rolling With Heat", Ursula Rucker kicking some reverential poetry on "Waok (ay) Rollcall", and Musiq on the single "Break You Off". Other highlights include the late 80s Bomb Squad-like production on "Thought @ Work", the group's live instrumentation (and ?uestlove's always great trap work) and soul claps on tunes like "The Seed (2.0)", the epic "Water", and "Complexity" with Jill Scott. If you're solely of the 2 turntables and a mic camp you may want to head elsewhere, but if you've been anxiously awaiting the new Roots LP like we have, you'll be knocked straight on your arse, welled up with tears of joy. The best major label hip hop album of '02, and a beauty to go in the time capsule for future generations to learn, and mourn what they missed first hand. Amazing!!! Other tracks include "Quills", "Pussy Galore", and "Something In The Way Of Things (In Town)". CD
(Limited edition CD comes with a bonus DVD.)

✨✧ Salsoul OrchestraSalsoul Orchestra – 2 CD Deluxe Anthology ... CD
Salsoul/Suss'd (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Vibes, strings, keyboards, and vocals – the heavenly sound of the Salsoul Orchestra, one of the greatest disco outfits of the 70s! At the time, the group were ubiquitous on the dancefloor scene – but the amazing thing to our ears is how great these tunes still sound after all these years – still tight, right, and funky at the best places – gliding along with a sound that's classy yet soulful at the same time. The group were the brainchild of Philly soul maestro Vince Montana – who'd cut his teeth in the Sigma scene for years, and stepped out in the mid 70s with this fully-formed vision of a larger disco orchestra – one that countless others tried to copy, but could never catch the groove as well as Montana. Salsoul Orchestra's genius is beautifully summed up in this lavish set – a better collection than any we've seen on the group, and packaged with 27 tracks on 2CDs – including some hard to find mixes and a great set of notes! Titles include "Chicago Bus Stop", "Salsoul Hustle (previously unissued Tom Moulton mix)", "Nice N Naasty", "Staying Alive", "It's A New Day", "Magic Bird Of Fire", "Runaway", "Standing & Waiting On Love", "Salsoul Rainbow", "Sun After The Rain (Tom Moulton 12" mix)", "212 N 12th", "Burning Spear", "Somebody To Love", "Take Some Time Out For Love (orig 12" mix)", "Ooh I Love It (Shep Pettibone 12" mix)", "Seconds (12" mix)", and "Resorts International". Dexter Wansel keeps up the space jazz funk groove that was begun on Life On Mars – with those fat, thumping bass lines, elastic lead guitar, atmospheric soul vocals and loads and loads of keys – spatial work on Rhodes, Moogs and ARPs! It's all done in a funky style not always heard on Philly! Dexter arranged and produced just about everything – and cuts include "All Night Long", "Voyager", "Solutions", "Latin Love", and "Time Is The Teacher". CD

✨✧ Black IceBlack Ice ... CD
HDM, Late 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heavy groover from Black Ice – an old school harmony act at the core, but working here in a sweet clubby mode for the 70s! The approach is quite similar to the best group soul coming from Philly at the time – with some wicked upbeat numbers that step along beautifully – not Sigma-bred, but with a similar blend of tight rhythms on the bottom, soaring strings on the top, and funky instrumentation in the middle – more than enough to really get the vocal interplay going between the group's five members! Arrangements are by Ray Jackson – and the set also features a few nice mellower numbers to round out the sound – including the great stepper "The Wine Is Bitter (But The Grapes Are Sweet)" – alongside other tracks that include "Shakedown", "Blind Over You", "Touch", "Girl That's What I Call Love", "I Want You Back", and "Making Love In The Rain".
