The first album ever from The Chambers Brother – a much rootsier set than the psychedelic soul that later earned them fame in the 60s! The set's heavy on influences from folk, blues, and gospel – and pitches the group more towards the crossover college scene than the mainstream soul crowd – thanks to an appreciatively rootsy style of production that really has the vocals and acoustic instrumentation presented without any other augmentation. Tracks were recorded live at The Unicorn in Boston and the Ash Grove in LA – and most numbers are covers, with versions of "Summertime", "Your Old Land", "It's All Over Now", "Reconsider Baby", "People Get Ready", "Tore Up", and "Money". A righteous early 70s set from Ray Charles – and a record with a much deeper vibe than you might guess from the image of Ray and some kids on the cover! Arrangements were handled by Quincy Jones, Sid Feller, and Mike Post – and the record is kind of a 70s take on the fuller modes that Charles explored for ABC during the 60s – moved into more contemporary territory with some sweet Fender Rhodes, full strings, and a funky undercurrent in some of the rhythms – never too forced or over the top, but in ways that makes some of the tunes sly steppers that work great with Charles' aging vocals. Darkly beautiful work from singer June Christy – a lesser-remembered gem from the end of her years at Capitol Records! The mood here is very much in keeping with the "night people" setting of the title – a lonely space of empty streets, open windows, and late night saloons – first brought to record so beautifully by June on the Something Cool album, and wonderfully revisited in this fantastic set! Arrangements are by husband Bob Cooper, and although they're a bit less arch-modern than some of Christy's work with Pete Rugolo, they still really get at the boozy genius of June's vocals at their best. The production is great, and tracks mix raw rocksteady rhythms with some great arrangements that add some nice baroque touches at times, especially on the title cut, which features some very nice string parts. The tracks here are shorter than before – no side-long jams at all – but they definitely bristle with slight undercurrents of noise, and have some unbridled rhythms that make for a good sense of energy. Added to these are a few more (then) contemporary touches – a very slight update of Miles' older funk, but never in a slick or commercial way – and still cerebral enough to show the world that Davis wasn't selling out late in the day. Miles plays a bit of keyboards in addition to trumpet – and other players include Bill Evans on saxophones, John Scofield on guitar, Marcus Miller on bass, and Al Foster on drums. A nicely evolved groove from Lee Dorsey – still working with tremendous production from Allen Toussaint, the man who brought him into stardom in the 60s – but with a warmer sound that's more 70s modern overall! The shift here is almost like that of Lamont Dozier's in the 70s – as Lee moves into a fuller, richer sound – one that shows that he's got a lot of different aspects to his music that hadn't showed up on previous albums, and which nicely brings him out of the Crescent City soul ghetto. There's till some nice Nola rhythms going down on the set, and all the tracks are originals by Toussaint – but honestly, the smoothest cuts are almost the best – and offer a great chance to hear Dorsey's great vocals in a whole new mode. A great high-concept composition from Duke Ellington – one that rivals the earlier brilliance of his Liberian Suite! Like that one, vocals are a key part of this long-form work – a special performance done for the Century Of Negro Progress Exposition in Chicago in 1963 – with an all-star cast that includes Jimmy Jones both at the piano and conductor's stand; Joya Sherrill on vocals with the Irving Bunton Singers, Jimmy Grissom, Jimmy McPhail, and Lil Greenwood; Billy Strayhorn on celeste, Juan Amalbert on conga, and other familiar Ellingtonians in the larger group! The tunes have a mix of gospel and folk roots, turned towards more modern Ellington compositional modes – and almost all numbers feature vocals, including one with narration by Ellington himself. Titles include "Will You Be There", "Come Sunday", "David Danced", "Montage", "My Mother My Father", "My People", "The Blues Ain't", and "What Color Is Virtue". CD

A great bit of southern funk from the 70s – upbeat, grooving, and with a really righteous sound! "People" is one of those cuts that just grabs you right away – a unique-sounding tune that's all the way out there – tightly riffing instrumentation topped with some slightly raspy vocals – all with an offbeat charm that almost reminds us of the first time we heard the 70s classics by Milton Wright! A lost funky classic from the Kool & The Gang side of the universe – cut by a group we've only seen on this one and only record – which was recorded for one of the sub-labels of De-Lite Records, home to the main Gang! There's clearly some mentorship taking place here – as the group works with producer Gene Redd, of K&TG fame – and they also serve up their own takes on some of the best early funky tracks of that group – while also using that inspiration to then move into some heavy jams of their own – all with razor-sharp instrumentation, but a sound that's still plenty raw as well! This maturation of the funky 45 underground is still in its very early stages here – no disco touches or commercial overproduction – which really makes the group shine on cuts that include "Gold Smoke", "Funky Granny", "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", "Mama Said-Papa Said", and "Funky Gene-Ra-Tion". CD features some great bonus cuts – "The Bump (parts 1 & 2)", "Juice It Up (parts 1 & 2)", and the tracks "Get Down Get Stank" and "I Like What I Like", both recorded by the related Hot Line combo. 2 classic groovers by Fantastic Four – back to back on one CD! Alvin Stone is some of the best 70s work from Fantastic Four – who are really hitting their stride vocally, moving into a whole new sound from their work in the late 60s. The groove is a mix of 70s harmony soul and early Westbound disco – and the longish tracks get quite involved, both vocally and arrangement-wise. The title cut – "Alvin Stone (Birth & Death Of A Gangster)" – is a righteous post-Temps soul track, and the album's got lots of other nice ones, like "Let This Moment Last Forever", "County Line", and "My Love Won't Stop at Nothing". Night People is a with a mix of classic Detroit group soul and the tighter disco sounds that were creeping into the Westbound label at the time. Paul Riser and David Van Depitte did the arranging, and the tracks include "If I Lose My Job", "Hideaway", "Don't Risk Your Happiness On Foolishness", and the long medley of "Night People" and "Lies Divided by Jive". A seminal record in the transition from the funky 45 underground to the world of the full length LP – a record we'd put right up there with early classics by The JBs and Kool & The Gang! As with the latter, Fatback Band grew up first getting some great play on instrumental 45s – and right out of the gate, they set this on fire with the same sort of energy – impeccable instrumentation that needs to be heard to be believed – all live, all pre-sampling, but with a quality that's gone on to transform the worlds of funk, soul, and hip hop over the decades! Every cut is great, and the album's a non-stop party – with titles that include "Nija Walk", "Fatbackin", "Soul March", "Soul Man", "Kiba", "Clap Your Hands", "Gotta Have You", and "Baby Doll". CD

A really well-chosen set of classic Afro Funk records from Fela Kuti – hand-picked by Idris Elba, and brought together in this limited box set! Open & Close is an early classic from Fela Kuti & Africa 70 – the kind of early 70s record that helped both the leader and the group establish themselves as a global powerhouse of funk and soul! The set begins with the side-long "Open & Close" – a righteous tune that's driven onward by lots of tight drums from Tony Allen – young, focused, and completely amazing here – while Fela delivers all these madly leaping electric piano lines amidst the super-sharp horn section – all moving instrumentally for many minutes before the vocals come into play! Side two features two shorter tracks, but still nice and long in comparison to most funky groups – the wonderful "Swegbe & Pako" and "Gbagada Gbagada Gbogodo Gbogodo" – tunes that really send the record over the top! Fela teams up with vibist Roy Ayers on Music Of Many Colors – one of the best soul collaborations ever – a whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Opposite People is seminal work from one of Fela's most crucial periods – recorded at a time when his soul was the deepest! The album features 2 long tracks – "Opposite People" and "Equalisation Of Trouser & Pant" – and they both have beautiful spooky keyboards in the instrumental passages, then leap into hard soul vocals by Fela. Tremendous stuff – done in a style that shows that no matter how many people cop or remake Fela's sound, he's still the best one to do it! The rare Stalemate album features the side-long tracks "Stalemate" and "Don't Worry About My Mouth" – both really hard-driving numbers, with a fantastic mix of vocals and grooves! Live In Amsterdam is an excellent live set from Fela – one that shows that he was still very capable of going over the top during the 80s! The set's a double LP – and it features 4 great numbers by the group, with Fela on soprano sax, piano, and organ, and plenty of other great work on tenor, alto, and trumpet. Titles include "Gimme Shit I Give You Shit", "Custom Check Point", "Movement Of The People", and "Political Statement Number 1". I Go Shout Plenty is a great one from Fela – with a date of 1986, but a sound that's pure late 70s! The record features 2 long tracks – "I Go Shout Plenty" and "Why Black Man Dey Suffer" – and they're both hard groovers with a strong political feel. "Why Black Man" is especially nice, and has some great keyboard riffing in the middle, with that great tinny sound that you'll hear on the best Fela albums. The tenor tunes are especially great – kind of opening a new chapter for Giuffre's career – and the group features Kiyoshi Tokunaga on bass and Randy Kaye on percussion. Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! Great later work from Eddie Harris – three albums in a single set! Live In Berlin is a surprisingly great concert – recorded by Eddie at the end of the 80s, with a fire and open approach that we wouldn't have expected! The album features Eddie on piano and tenor, with backing only by Ray Peterson on bass and Norman Fearrington on drums – and the spare setting really has Eddie taking charge of the set dynamically, hitting funky notes one moment, soulful notes another, and messing around in a tripped-out style that we haven't heard since his best Atlantic recordings of the early 70s. The set kicks off with the funky jamband number "Ambidextrous", rolls into the weird vocal tune "La Carnival", and contains other great numbers like "Scatting Unlyrically Simultaneously", "Airigen", "Walkin", "Lover", and "Eddie Who". Eddie Who is only a trio set, but one that often has all the full, soulful currents of some of the reedman's 70s material for Atlantic Records! Eddie plays piano and trumpet in addition to his usual tenor – and often does so at the same time, thanks to the magic of overdub – which also allows Harris to vocalize a bit next to his instrumental passages, with this very cool sound that's both an extension of the vocalizations he'd begun with Les McCann, but also some more familiar jazz singing as well. The whole album's not vocal, and the more instrumental passages feature some mighty nice tenor – and rhythm is from the team of Ralphe Armstrong on bass and Sherman Ferguson on drums. Titles include "Eddie Who", "Cedar Trees", "Silverplated", "Eddie Theme", and "Ambidextrous". People Get Funny is a later album from reedman Eddie Harris – but a set that still continues some of his best funky styles from the 70s Atlantic Records years! In fact, the record may well be the last that Eddie ever cut in this mode – a real surprise at a time when some of his other sessions were more traditional – and the record's filled with lots of very groovy surprises that include great Fender Rhodes from William Henderson, plus more electric piano from Eddie – who also sings a bit too, in that great raspy tone of his. Rhythms are often pretty great, too – funky, in an offbeat way – thanks to sweet basslines from Larry Gales and drums from Carl Burnett. The set features some wonderful playing by Frank Strozier – who's handling both alto and flute on the set, grooving around like he did on his own great Riverside albums of the period, or on Haynes' excellent Cymbalism set, to which this one is a nice partner. The songs on here are a bit less hip than on that album – as many of them are 60s standards, like "People", "Mr Lucky", "Wives & Lovers", "Invitation", and "What Kind Of Fool Am I" – but they're done with a lot imagination, and a soulful modal groove that really opens them up! A nice little collection of some classic hard bop from Jimmy Heath, with a few of the sides of some the stuff he recorded with larger ensembles thrown in for good measure, pulled together in the 80s, once the OJC family of labels came under the Fantasy umbrella. Heath's Riverside recordings of the late 50s and early 60s is some of our favorite material on the label, recording with a soulful, hip edge and fiery hard bop energy. This collection pulls numbers from The Thumper, Really Big!, The Quota, Triple Threat, Swamp Seed and On The Trail, and feature a host of top notch players, including Nat Adderley, Curtis Fuller, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Pat Patrick, Cannonball Adderley, Julius Watkins, Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton, and brothers Percy and Albert Heath. The classic debut from one of the weirdest concept groups of the 60s – a mime rock band brought together by producer Lew Futterman – who'd also worked on some killer funky jazzy sessions with Brother Jack McDuff! The style here is psychedelic pop through and through – and although the group didn't speak, they do sing (is that really mime?) – and work in a groovy sing-song blend of reeds and rockish rhythms, one that definitely has some of the same sharp changes and funky undercurrents you'd find in Futterman's jazz projects – although honed down here into much shorter Sunshine tunes! The album's a very unique little record – and oddly the group flourished for years. But somehow this first record has a charm that's really undeniable – and is maybe still their best effort ever. Kara Jackson has a really amazing voice – a range that goes nicely deep at all the right times, and which sounds especially strong here amidst the often lean but really effective instrumentation on the record – put together at a level that's very fresh and unexpected, especially in the way that acoustic guitar might be used upfront next to some more processed elements! That guitar seems to emphasize the honest quality in the very personal tunes put together by Jackson – a hell of a songwriter who almost makes you feel as if you've stumbled upon her working her craft on her own, overhearing things she might not be ready to share with the world. Yet by that, we don't mean that the album's unpolished – it's really well put-together, thanks to production help from Sen Morimoto, Nnamdi, and Kaina – on titles that include "Free", "Rat", "Therapy", "Dickhead Blues", "No Fun/Party", "Brain", "Pawnshop", "Liquor", and "Recognized". Tremendous work from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings – a set that took a bit longer to hit the racks than expected, but which really shows a richness that more than makes up for the delay! Sharon's a singer who's always been great – but she steps out strongly here with a sense of maturity that seems to take her vocals even farther than before – and The Dap Kings are more than ready to match her energy with some funky work of their own! Jones has gone through a lot in recent years – both with the band and in her own personal life – and the record's a proud summation of life's challenges and triumphs, served up in the instant-classic style that has made Sharon one of the greatest living soul singers of the past few decades. Bosco Mann knocked things out of the park with his raw production – and also wrote a good number of tracks on the set too – and titles include "Making Up & Breaking Up", "Long Time Wrong Time", "People Don't Get What They Deserve", "Retreat", "Stranger To My Happiness", and "Now I See". Post-Atlantic work from Robin Kenyatta – but an album that follows in a very similar mode! This date was done for the Wolf subsidiary of TK Records, but it's got a very hip New York groove – one that's almost even more righteous than some of Robin's earlier work, with some excellent arrangements from Arthur Jenkins – who's managed to fill the set with a great sense of soul! Kenyatta's alto and soprano sax are set up with keyboards from Jenkins and Richard Tee, plus bass, guitar, percussion, and some great backing vocals at points – used sparingly, but in ways that almost remind us of Oneness Of Juju at some of their smoother moments. Kenyatta's reeds have a Plunky-like feel too – more inside than the Juju work of the mid 70s, but pointing towards Plunky's smoother sounds to come. Given that the vocal group features Gwen Guthrie, Vivian Cherry, and Patti Austin, you can bet they sound pretty sweet – and titles on the set include "Love Me", "Oh Oh Oh", "You", "Bluebird", and "Of Life & Love". A real standout from Ray Davies and crew – heavy-hitting here with guitars that seem a bit more amped up than usual, and a slight post-punkish groove that's almost a reinvention of the group's sound for an 80s new wave market! The album's a surprisingly hard rocker in parts, and has a darkness that's a nice change from some of the late 70s Kinks material – but also shows Ray still able to come up with some more tender numbers in just the right spots. An amazing set from one of the best young players on the Swedish jazz scene – tenor saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar, a player with boundless depth and imagination! The title of the set may be "plays loud for the people" – but we'd like to amend that to "plays proud for the people" – because Kullhammar's tone, timing, and sense of color are tremendous – extremely well-developed and mature, with a soulful intensity that takes us back to some of our favorite work by players that include Frank Foster and Benny Golson. Like Foster, Jonas often goes for a rhythmic approach to his tunes – blowing in a way that directs the overall sound of the set every bit as much as the bass and drums – and like Golson, he's got a raspy warmth in his tone that's beautifully human throughout. The group on the set is a quartet (mostly) – with Torbjorn Gulz on piano, and a great set of original tunes that include "Snake City East", "Slow Drop", "Miss Mira", "Behind Delight", "Peace 2003", and "Instant Soul". Heavy funk from Betty – working here in her best deep soul mode! The main side is a nice cover of "Games People Play", but the real killer is "My Train" – a badass bit of funky female soul that really kicks some ass! A great session that was recorded in Tokyo in 1973 – featuring Abbey backed by a small group that includes Dave Liebman on sax and flute, Al Foster on drums, and Hiromasa Suzuki on piano. The record's pretty darn hip – and it's a nice version of Abbey's haunting approach to vocal jazz, touched by some of the new directions vocalists were going at the time, yet firmly rooted in the firm command of voice and emotion heard on Lincoln's best records from the early 60s. Titles include "Africa", "You & Me & Love", "Naturally", "Living Room", and "Natas", which seems to have Abbey singing along with overdubs of her own voice, to very cool effect! CD
