An overlooked gem from The Controllers – one issued a bit late to be part of the classic wave of group soul, but a set that's still overflowing with really old school harmonies! The Controllers really have a wonderful way of putting over a ballad – letting things build slow and mellow, trading lead parts and harmonies together in a way that really moves the message forward, while never overdoing things too much in search of a hook. And even when the instrumentation is contemporary, it never gets in the way of the vocals – and almost always lays back once the lyrics come in, even on the album's few groovers. Titles include "For The Love Of My Woman", "My Secret Fantasy", "Love Is On Our Side", "Play Time", "Sleeping Alone", "Knocking At Your Door", and "No One's Ever Loved Me More". CD

The Dramatics hit an 80s groove mood here – and as on their clubbier sides from the end of the 70s, the vocals are still wonderful – and more than anything, the set's a strong soul-based set that still has the group at the top of their game! Ballads actually sparkle the best here – and showcase that wonderfully full mode that was the best side of The Dramatics harmonies – but the uptempo tunes are good, and have breakout moments that sparkle nicely. Production is by Ron Banks and LJ Reynolds, but Don Davis still oversees the whole thing – and titles include "It Ain't Rainin", "Wecome Back Home", "Love Is Here", "Be With The One You Love", and "Music Is The Peoples Choice". Post-disco work from The Emotions – breaking free a bit here from the Earth Wind & Fire influence, and grooving nicely with a sweet 80s feel! The girls' voices are still quite wonderful – some of the deepest harmonies in the female soul world at the time – and the tunes kick it up nicely in a blend of snapping bassy club tracks and mellower cuts that sweetly sway with their great vocals! Loads of wonderful tracks – and an album not to miss! A classic album of all-out soul from Herbie Hancock – done in close collaboration with Rod Temperton of Heatwave – in a jazzy-styled version of that group's own great groove! Temperton handled arrangements and a lot of songwriting, and most cuts have lead vocals from Wayne Anthony – who does a nice job with the lyrics, but still leaves Herbie some space for keyboard solos too – in a groove that's a fair bit warmer than some of the other keyboard-heavy soul records of the time. Production is by Narada Michael Walden, Herbie, and Jay Graydon – and titles include the jazzy stepping gem "Getting To The Good Part", plus "Lite Me Up", "The Bomb", "Can't Hide Your Love", "The Fun Tracks", and "Motor Mouth". A great little soul album from Herbie Hancock – but one that's often lost in the valleys between his bigger hits of the time! The record was cut in the space right before Herbie's big "Rockit" success – and it's a sweet bit of funky fusion that has a good dose of R&B in the mix – similar to other records from Hancock's Columbia label keyboardist contemporaries – like Rodney Franklin, Webster Lewis, or Charles Earland! All orchestrations are performed by Herbie on a host of keyboards and synthesizers, and just about every cut has vocals – from singers who include Sylvester, Gavin Christopher, and The Waters. But even with this soul component, Herbie still keeps things jazzy – using a good bit of keyboards to open up the tunes in the middle, and hitting hard on all numbers with that classic Hancock approach to funk! Joyous, bouncy sounds from the legendary Al Hudson – a sweet little set with his Soul Partners group, done in a mode that's right up there with the best music of his One Way combo! The grooves are uptempo, yet are much more rooted in ensemble funk than some of the disco of Al's contemporaries – and if anything, the album really shows a great evolution from the funk bands of the previous generation to a newer, more sophisticated style overall. Hudson's work at the helm is wonderful – and helps steer the group towards some nice mellow moments too – with arrangements from Kevin McCord, Rudy Robinson, and Dave Roberson. Alicia Myers serves up some great early vocals with the group – and titles include "I Don't Want You To Leave Me", "Another Love Song", "You Can Do It", "In The Basement", "Call Me", and "Rock". A nicely grooving soul album from Love Committee – who are probably best known for their earlier disco songs, but we really dig this 1980 self-titled album for the mellower numbers – the best of which have a smooth midtempo groove that's as tasty as ever! A few of the numbers were co-written by Eddie Levert of The O'Jays, an indication of the style LC were going for, and they hit it nicely! Titles include "Love People Theme", "Ain't It a Shame", "You Are the One for Me","Boogie Papers", "Who Can We Trust", "I Wanna Make Love to You", and "I Made A Mistake". This Vinyl Masterpiece edition has 2 bonus tracks: longer versions of "I Made A Mistake" and "Boogie Papers". CD

A pretty sweet soul group from the mid 80s scene – one that's been a bit overlooked over the years, but who have a sound that's right up there with the best of their big name contemporaries! At some points, these guys have a way of harmonizing along with electro funk that reminds us a lot of The Jacksons during the 80s – and we mean that in the best way possible – and other cuts almost seem to borrow a bit of inspiration from the Paisley Park generation, especially in the way there's a nicely chunky vibe to the funk! There's even some occasional electro soul touches – either in the keyboards, or in rare spots in the beats – and the whole thing's the kind of album that's got plenty to offer for any fan of funky 80s soul. Funky grooves merge into sweet soulful moments – on this wonderful debut from an obscure Chicago group! The music is clubby at points, but also mellows out at others – mixing bassy grooves with spacier moments that have an especially nice vibe – and which really showcase a sophisticated modern soul side of the group! And the production work features plenty of old talents from Brunswick Records – including Chicago soul giants Carl Davis, Eugene Record, and Sonny Sanders – who really put the record together with a lot of care, at a level that should have made these guys huge. A great lost set, but well worth discovering – and tracks include "Volcanic Voodoo", "Take It To The Top", "What Makes You Wanna Lie To Me", "You're My Everything", "Show Him The Way To Go", and "Worry". O'Bryan's virtually a one man show here – handling vocals, keyboards, arrangements, and other instrumental bits too – but he also gets some great help on the album's lean arrangements, with just the right sort of funky touches on guitar, bass, and drums! The set starts out with a tighter, funkier feel than we remember from O'Bryan's other work – a nice link between 80s groove styles and late 70s mainstream funk – with the leader's vocals wrapped very nicely around the grooves! But as the set moves on, it's the ballads and mellower cuts that really win us – tunes that move a bit slower, but still have a nice bite in the rhythm, with a sweet laidback stepping vibe. Titles include "Lovelite", "Be My Lover", "Go On & Cry", "Breakin Together", "You're Always On My Mind", and "Too Hot". CD

Smooth and sophisticated 80s soul from O'Bryan – his first Capitol album! Doin' Alight is a great mix of smoothed out modern soul, bits of funk and classic soul touches. Most of it is co-produced with Don Cornelius, of Soul Train fame, who helped O'Bryan get his start. A good bit of the album has a kicked back, nice and mellow approach – grooving in a modern Capitol Rare mode, with some pop funk bass and elegant strings for good measure. Tracks include "It's Over", "Love Has Found Its Way", "Doin Alright", "Can't Live Without Your Love", and "Still Water (Love)". CD

Oliver Cheatham sounds wonderful here – in that best bouncy style that made him a big favorite on the dancefloors in the early 80s – a groove that's still pretty darn great all these years later! The set features key songwriting help from Al Hudson and Kevin McCord, both of whom help enforce the One Way style of grooving here – nicely punched-up club tracks filled with plenty of hooks, mixed with the odd mellower number to show that the album's a solid soul effort all the way through – and not just some dance tracks cooked up in the studio! Cheatham's vocals are great – better than we remember – and titles include "Everybody Wants To Be The Boss", "I Want Your Love I Need Your Love", "Boogie Stomp", "Don't Take Your Love Away", and "I Gave Myself To You". A totally massive set from One Way – a record that has them sounding even better than ever – drawing on all the strengths of the previous few records, and really knocking it out of the park! Although the group's got a great way with a groove, the mellow cuts here are equally nice – including the sublime title number, which begins the set as a sweet stepper – then lets the grooves pick up pace as things move on. Everything's nicely restrained – no overdone boogie modes, or too-funky rhythms that would usually show up on a set like this – and if anything, One Way should be given plenty of props for not just going for the dancefloor – and really coming up with a richly-voiced album like this! Titles include "Love Is", "My Lady", "Wait Until Tomorrow", "Push", "I Didn't Mean to Break Your Heart", and "All Over Again". CD

A classic from One Way – who're still going strong in the early 80s! The group's ace in the hole was always the great work of Al Hudson – a fearless leader who kept things funky, and who wrote in some great hooks to tracks that give them uncommon strength. Case in point is the classic "Cutie Pie", which is the leadoff track here – with a funky bassline would be right at home on George Clinton's Computer Games – but it really takes flight thanks to One Way's deeper-sinking hook. The album is among their bigger hits of the period – but it's also proof that they were still going strong creatively, too. No foolin'! Lots of solid cuts, including "Runnin Away", "Who's Foolin Who", "Sweet Lady", "Give Me One More Chance" and "You're So Very Special". CD

Damn, One Way never lets us down – and although the group cut many albums back in the day, all of them have some great standout moments! The groove here seems even tighter than ever, but never slick or commercial – a very important distinction, given that so many of One Way's contemporaries really let things slide as they headed for the pop charts. Not so with Al Hudson and group, though – as they always know how to balance things out with all the best elements they had from the start – a good mix of upbeat groovers and some mellower steppers – the latter of which really make us love the record. Titles include the smooth stepper "More Than Friends, Less Than Lovers", which features lead vocals by Ewana Wilson, and some sweet harmonies by the Ridgeways that really make the track – and other titles include "Let's Talk", "Serving It", "Condemned", and "If I Knew". Rainbow Team, where have you been all our lives? You're a heck of a great little group – and we love the sound you've got on this second album! Sure, we know you're wearing a bunch of silly day-glo costumes on the cover – and that's probably what's made this record slip by our crates in the past – but one listen to the tightness of your grooves, and we're more than willing to forgive you for any bad fashion choices! The sound of the set is totally great – soaring along in the best sort of 80s groove mode – with tight snapping rhythms at the bottom, and a full set of arrangements that bring in some added horns and just the right amount of sweetening strings. And although Rainbow Team are Italian, the record's got a stone American soul sound – very much like the best of the Capitol Rare generation in the US. Titles include "A Song For You", "Let Em Be", "Please Let's Go", "Bite The Apple", "Hope He Wants", "Let's Forget", and "Don't Cry For Me". CD features the bonus track "Stay". CD

A great dawn of the 80s set from The Reddings! It's steeped in bouncing bass, snapping rhythms, and plenty of full on groovers from the Reddings trio – a set that has their vocals tightly wrapped around rhythms that are heavy on the boogie and mainstream funk modes of the time! Bass is handled by Dexter Redding, and is pretty upfront in the mix on most numbers – guiding the groove, and cutting things up strongly – except on a few of the mellower ballads. Titles include "Come In Out The Rain", "It's Friday Night", "Remote Control", "Doin It", "I Want It", "The Awakening", and "Lady Be My Lovesong". CD

The Ritchie Family do their best to remain relevant after the glory days of commercial disco – and succeed strongly on I'll Do My Best – thanks to the sweetly soulful trio vocals and a nicely updated dancefloor soul sound! The songs are great, and groove on just long enough – each track running 4 to 5 minutes – with beautiful vocals by the ladies, and arrangements built on tight rhythms, funky bass and horns! Fonzi Thornton co-produced the vocal tracks – and the titles include "I'll Do My Best (For You Baby)", "This Love's On Me", "One And Only", "You Can Always Count On Me", "Walk With Me", "Alright On The Night", "Walk With Me", "Tonight I Need To Have Your Love", "and "You've Got Me Dancing". One of the strongest albums by Rockie Robbins – and they're all pretty darn great – thanks to some sweet production and arrangements from the team of Skip Scarborough and Jerry Peters! Skip and Jerry bring a nice sense of smoothness to Rockie's Chicago-forged sound – expanding his sound with fuller arrangements than before, and creating a style here that's tight and professional, yet never slick or poppy. Titles include "Time To Think", "I Believe In Love", "My Old Friend", "Look Before You Leap", "Give Our Love A Chance", "An Act Of Love", "I'll Turn To You", "For You For Love", and "Talk To Me". CD

Great work from the wonderful Rockie Robbins – a smooth soul singer who cut some great sides at the start of the 80s, but who hardly ever gets his due! Bobby Martin's working with Rockie on this effort – giving the set that warmly gliding mode that made Martin's productions some of the best in late 70s mainstream soul – a sound that's clearly informed by Philly, but which also has room for mellower, and more sophisticated modes as well. Tracks include a number of Sam Dees compositions – "Hang Tough", "After Loving You", "Girl I'm Gonna Get Ya", and "For The Sake Of A Memory" – plus the tracks "Together", "Point Of View", "Lost In Love Again", and "I Never Knew". CD

A real stormer from Round Trip – a group whose roots go back to the legendary Sins Of Satan album on Buddah, and who also work here with great production from Al Perkins – in a style that's a bit like his music with One Way! We're not sure if "round trip" was an answer to One Way's name – but whatever the case, the group's a great part of the Perker corner of the universe at the time – and really share his wonderfully warm way with a groove! Oliver Cheatham's in the group at this point – and his vocals really help deepen their sound, especially on some of the mellower cuts, which stand as a real surprise for this sort of record – and give the whole thing a much richer vibe than you might expect. Titles include "Woman", "Nothing Wrong With Dancing", "Not In The Cards", "Let's Go Out Tonite", "Lost Inside Of You", and "Higher Consciousness". CD

A killer soul album from Philly – and one that often gets overlooked! The group's a smooth harmony combo with a nice modern finish – perfectly showing the mode that Philly was hitting after the disco years, one that would show that Gamble & Huff still had their ears open to new and sophisticated sounds in music. The record features the excellent mellow groover "I Can't Stop (Turning You On)", plus other nice ones that are more uptempo – like "Midnight Dancer", "Get On Up", "Keep Dancin", and "Love's Gonna Get You In The End". This CD edition includes a bonus track: "Midnight Dancer (Special Disco Version)". CD

Starpoint's getting a bit loose and free with their fashions on the cover of this one – but the grooves themselves are tighter than ever! If anything, Starpoint seems to be a lot more confident than before – working in a mode that's completely free from late 70s trends, but which also doesn't fall into the traps of others of their generation – a sound that's electric and funky, yet also plenty darn soulful too. Renee Diggs' vocals are completely great on the album – bringing in a depth that's really appreciated, and giving the group a much more well-rounded sound than so many other all male ensemble funk acts of the time. Ballads and mellower numbers are every bit as great as the groovers too – and titles include "All Night Long", "Get Your Body Up", "Bring Your Sweet Lovin Back", "Show Me", "I Can Give You Love", and "It's You". CD

Excellent work from Starpoint – the kind of all-solid album that easily marks them as one of the most soulful groups of the boogie generation! There's a depth here that goes way beyond simple bass-heavy grooves for the dancefloor – a sound that picks a fair bit up from the Earth Wind & Fire groove of the early 70s, and manages to keep some jazzy touches and righteous undercurrents going on – even when the tunes themselves have simpler themes overall. Renee Diggs' lead vocals are especially wonderful – crackling with a warmth that's a nice change from the usual belting club diva mode of the period, and which ties together the rest of the group through the strength of her presence. Rhythms are nicely varied too – with some key ballads sitting nicely next to more uptempo numbers – making for a well-rounded album that's extremely well put together! Titles include "I Just Want To Be Your Lover", "For You", "Keep On It", "We're Into Love", "Starpoint's Here Tonight", and the excellent but too short "Interlude". CD

Quite possibly the best album ever from Ohio funky soul combo Switch – and certainly proof that the hope of Motown in the 80s was in ensemble group funk! This second album holds up really well, and thanks to some sweet production by Bobby DeBarge and Jermaine Jackson, the record's got a warm soulful groove that hooks on the popular styles at the end of the 70s, but which keeps the group fresh and point to possibilies for the new decade. We really wish more singers and groups followed suit in the early part of the 80s! Titles include "Calling On All Girls", "I Call Your Name", "You're The One For Me", and "Go On Doin What You Feel". A sweet lean set from T-Connection – still every bit as funky as back in their late 70s years, but with a different sort of style for the new generation! The music's got that great 80s groove approach that Capitol Records excelled at during the time – and the group's a bit more compressed than before – just a quintet, with heavy contributions from Theophilus Coakley on lead vocals, keyboards, songwriting, and production! This focus around a strong male lead gives the group a really fresh feel – and pushes them past the ensemble funk stereotypes of their generation – with great results on cuts that are heavy with funky bass and keyboard lines. Titles include "You Found Someone New", "Take It To The Limit", "Right Place Wrong Time", "You Can Feel The Groove", and "In Another Life". CD

The early 80s debut from singer, songwriter Gary Taylor – also playing Rhodes, piano and synth on this set – filled with nicely grooving 80s soul! The songs are solid, and though he'd go on to write songs for a number of soul and R&B stars, he lets these numbers build slowly into the hooks and choruses. There's lots of bouncing keys and drum machine thump and washes of synth – and nice, funky bass lines. Includes "Down For The Count",, "Just What I Have In Mind", "On The Line", "This Time", "Looking Back", "Special" and more. This CD edition includes the bonus track "On The Line (Long Version)". CD

One of the best albums in a big 80s run from Tease – thanks to great production from Mtume! The album's got a balance of soul and style that really holds together throughout – as the group finds especially strong ways of coming across on the ballads and mellower numbers, which often still have some heavy beats at the bottom! In a way, the set's one of the first to showcase a new style of slower soul that would hit even more strongly in the 90s – laidback cuts that still have an urban punch, but at a slower bpm. Titles include a unique remake of "I Can't Stand The Rain" – plus "Kick", "Tingle", "Somewhere Somebody", "Let's Stop Pretending", "Bad Reputation", "Remember", and "A Love Of Your Own". CD

A great 80s set from The Temptations – one of the few Motown acts who managed to deliver great work again and again over the years! The production has some 80s traces that are slightly dated, but the vocals are still top-shelf all the way – strongly moved much more into a mellow and modern mode than the group's righteous 70s years, but still plenty darn soulful for our ears – and proof that no matter what the lineup, or the setting, The Temptations could always come out with some top-shelf work! The record's got a nicely balanced feel that most younger groups of the time would have done well to consider – and titles include "Running", "Treat Her Like A Lady", "My Love Is True", "Set Your Love Right", "I'll Keep My Light In The Window", and "Memories". Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess! The sound is much more New York than Jamaica – and that's probably due to some great instrumental backing on keyboards by the likes of Harry Whitaker, Bernie Worrell, and Wally Badarou – all massive talents that bring a nice sweet jazzy sound to the best cuts on the record. There's a definite 80s sing-song groove going on – in that not-yet-top-of-the-charts soul sound that you'd hear on the better small urban stations at the time – moving back and forth nicely, in a strong link between the mainstream and the underground clubs! Tracks include "Hopscotch", "Seventh Heaven", "Oh What A Life", "Younger Than Me", and a nice cover of Sly Stone's "Family Affair". Sublime soul from Superior Movement – an overlooked Chicago group of the 80s, but one that's every bit as wonderful as any of the bigger acts we can think of from the time! The group definitely put harmonies first in their music – and although the album's a bigger-label effort, the vocals have the wonderfully personal feel of smaller label harmony soul from years back – retooled a bit with 80s instrumentation, which makes for a surprisingly great mix with the lyrics. Things are tight, but never too smooth – very well balanced, with none of the too-commercial missteps that other groups were making at the time – and titles include "The Key To Your Heart", "For You", "Come Fly With Me", "Lost Affair", "Guilty", "Sweet Dreams", and "Be My Cinderella". CD

A real 80s groover from Lillo Thomas – plenty of keyboards, snapping rhythms, and a sweetly gliding rhythm that beautifully supports Thomas' high-pitched vocals! The style owes a fair bit to territory first hit by Michael Jackson at the end of the 70s, but it still sounds surprisingly great after all these years – a style of soul that's unabashedly focused on the hooks, but which comes off with a fair bit of integrity too – thanks to a batch of nearly all original tunes by Thomas, co-written with keyboardist/arranger Paul Lawrence Jones. There's a lean groove to the record that holds up perfectly throughout, and never loses its energy – and titles include "I Love It", "Trust Me", "Who Do You Think You Are", "Hot Love", "You're A Good Girl", and "Joy Of Your Love".
