VariousEquidity Funk – Hard To Find Gems From The Vaults Of P&P Records ... CD
P&P, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 16.98
We're not sure what "equidity" means – but the grooves here are so great, we're hardly going to ask for a definition! The package is filled with plenty of the funk promised in the title – but often in ways that are really odd and offbeat – just what you'd expect from a mighty trip through the legendary P&P Records archives! Notes are a bit spare, but most tracks here appear to be from the late 70s and early 80s – mixing earlier funk modes with bits of club and old school hip hop – the latter of which makes for some of the best numbers here, cuts that really step out with a street party sort of feel. Titles include "Robot Dance" by Marvin Wright, "New York Computer Break Dance" by Stax, "Game Of Life (inst" by Lavara & E Mallison, "Gangster Rock" by Little Starsky, "Anyway I Can" by Milton Floyd, "Pound For Pound" by Le'O Roy, "Robot Dance" by Milton Wright, "Disco Hop" by Fly Guy, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "Funk Rap (inst)" by Ikim & Bacardi, "This Is The Way To Break Dance" by Super Coper & Clarence Breaker, and "Let's Do It" by Jesse Gee. P&P/Octave (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.99
An amazing collection of grooves – all pulled from the legendary P&P Records family of labels from the New York underground – hand-selected by Japanese DJ/collectors Ken Hidaka and Frankie Valentine! If you don't know the P&P groove, this is a great place to start – as the label had a really unique, really wonderful sound – tracks from the disco era, but stripped down to their core – so that the rhythms are really raw, instrumentation is nice and funky, and most of the music has this searing power that's kept the P&P tracks on the hippest of dancefloors for decades! A number of the cuts have really cool electronics, some others bring in some old school modes, and there's an equal balance between vocals and instrumentals that really keeps things exciting. Titles include "I Got You Dancing" by Karisma with Jocelyn Brown, "Ain't It Time (inst)" by Queen Yahna, "Magic Carpet" by High Fidelity, "Pound For Pound" by Le'o Roy, "Spank Me (voc)" by Bobby Mann, "Smooth Talk (inst)" by Mr Fox, "Johnson Jumpin (12" mix)" by Johnson Products, "Got To Get Your Love (voc)" by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, "Death Rap" by Margo's Kool Out Crew, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "African Rock" by Licky, "Stomp Your Feet & Dance (voc)" by Kim Taylor, "Roller Rink Funk" by Shift, "New York's Movin" by Ahzz, "Shake Off That Dream (disco)" by Eddie Owen, and "Freaktime" by Scott Davis & The Movements. Cloud OneAtmosphere Strut ... LP
P&P, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
One of the holy grails of the Spaced Out club music scene! Patrick Adams produced and arranged (and wrote and probably performed) this stunning set of spacey club grooves with a cool electronic feel, and a nice sense of mid to up-tempo rhythms. Includes the classic "Atmospheric Strut", one of the moogiest tracks around, plus the classics "Spaced Out" and "Disco Juice". All cuts are great, though, and the album's also got a good soul sound that often gets overlooked, especially on the cut "Doin' It All Night Long". A great one, and on the rare P&P label! Cloud OneSpaced Out – The Best Of Cloud One ... CD
P&P, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99 15.98
Classic work from the legendary P&P Records label – created by one of the "P" talents who gave them their name – studio genius Patrick Adams, who mostly works here on his own under the name of Cloud One! Adams already had great success working with east coast soul groups in the first half of the 70s – and as Cloud One, he really finds his way around the more cutting-edge styles of the time – mixing bits of funk with bits of disco, and often adding in these cool electronic elements that really helped define the P&P sound! Many cuts have cool moogy keyboards, and some spacey elements along the edges – done with a lot more soul than some of the Euro space disco recordings of the same time – with much more of a tie to the New York underground that was Adams' main milieu. Titles include the classics "Spaced Out" and "Atmosphere Strut" – plus "Jump Jump Jump", "Stomp Your Feet & Dance", "Disco Juice", "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By", "Patty Duke", "Happy Music", "Doin It All Night", and "Flyin High". Peggy LeeLatin Ala Lee! (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/S&P, 1959. Used ... $9.99
Very groovy work from Peggy – a set of tunes tone with a nice little Latin flair! The tunes themselves are all Broadway hits of the late 50s and early 60s, but they're redone wonderfully here – so that they often bear little resemblance to the originals. Jack Marshall handled the arrangements with a swinging and jazzy sound – really throwing in some tight syncopated rhythms to make the album crackle more than most of Peggy's other work from the time. Titles include "Hey There", "I Am In Love", "Heart", "On The Street Where You Live", "The Party's Over", "Dance Only With Me", and "I Enjoy Being A Girl". CD features 3 bonus tracks – "From Now On", "Ole", and "Sweet Happy Life". CD

✨✧ Jack AshfordHotel Sheet ... CD
Magic Disc/Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest club records ever cut – and one with a great gimmick too! That gimmick is the "hotel sheet" – an instrument created by percussionist Jack Ashford, which is a light piece of metal that's snapped back and worth to create these cool wibbly, wobbly waves of sound – almost like a moog at times, which gives some of these tracks a bit of a P&P Records vibe! Ashford was a member of The Funk Brothers – and a percussionist on countless classic Motown sessions – but this album was recorded in LA with a sweet electric groove, and a mix of strings and funk that almost rivals Jack's only other full album – a rare blacksploitation soundtrack. The set features full arrangements from Paul Riser, orchestrations from Gordon Staples, and the whole thing was recorded at the Marvin Gaye studios – which you can almost hear in Ashford's surprisingly great vocals. The title cut "Hotel Sheet" has this wonderful popping moogy sound that's very nice – and other tracks include "Funky Disco Party", "Shar", "Hi Mom, Hi Al", and "Get Right On Top". CD

EMI (Africa), Mid 70s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Not the rock group promised in the title, but one of the most smoking African combos of the 70s – a brilliantly funky lineup that's got a feel that's almost like the best from Kool & The Gang at the time! There's definitely an Afro Funk approach to the music – but most of the sounds here would sit perfectly next to the best American combos of the time – not just because the group sings in English throughout, but also because they've got a hard-hitting way of serving up the drums and basslines – and often layer in these moogy keyboard lines that are somewhere between "Summer Madness" and P&P Records funk! The album's a killer all the way through – one of the heaviest, most hard-hitting records from the scene at the time – and titles include "Shadow of the Boogie", "Together Again Never To Part", "Let's Marry", "Everybody Get Down", "People Talk", and "Lagos City". Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Maximillion/Everland (Austria), 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Razor-sharp funk from The Chapparrals – an Atlanta group from the 70s, and one with a great balance of ensemble grooving and deeper soul roots! There was really something special in the Atlanta scene at the time – an approach to large group funk that was different than most northern scenes, and which could still come across with a lean sort of energy, even when hitting tight on the money for the dancefloor! These guys are a perfect summation of that groove – and the album's a blistering blend of bassy rhythms and tight instrumentation – including some mighty sweet keyboards that snake wonderfully alongside the guitar and horns, sometimes with some wild moogy touches that are almost P&P funk. The whole thing's great – one of those albums that's rare, but mighty satisfying too – and titles include "Juicy Fruit", "Shake Your Head (parts 1 & 2)", "Stop Cheating On My Lady", "Country Girl", "Hittin It", "Jam Around The World", and "The Brew". There's a style here that's not unlike some of the best club work of the P&P Records generation – a three-female vocal approach that's borrowed from the mainstream, but which is set to quirkier grooves that bubble and percolate in a really great way – boogie rhythms at many points, but peppered with cool keyboard parts that sometimes get a bit spacey – and which make the record a real underground groover in the best way possible! Most tracks are in a boogie-styled groove, and the keyboards are as much in place as the vocals – bubbling and peppering the tracks in a mighty nice way – not really the electro soul modes that was starting to show up a few years later, but more like the spaced out sound of the underground that you'd hear on labels like P&P and AVI. ✨✧ Steve MarshallDo What You Will ... CD
Reynolds/Dope Brother, Late 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Steve Marshall towers above the 70s San Francisco skyline on the cover of this record – and the set features some equally towering grooves to match! The style here is a bit unusual – kind of a west coast take on the underground modes of the P&P empire out east, mixed with a bit of soul jazz – spare, simple club tracks that are a lot more stripped-down than regular disco – with a real focus on the core rhythms and select instrumentation on the cuts! Bits of strings slide into the mix, but they're never overdone – and most numbers pulsate with a really earthy sort of groove – heavy on bass, peppered with female vocals, and lots of funky keyboards and horns. There's also a slightly jazzy vibe at times – especially on numbers that feature flute work from Marshall – which gives the tunes a lyrical quality that's nice and warm, especially alongside the chorus vocals – which sometimes have a righteous qualitytoo. The reissue really brings up the sound nicely – with the Kenny Dope stamp of approval right on the back – and the CD also features lots of bonus tracks too! Titles include "Do What You Will", "This Choiceless Awareness", "Disco Rhapsody", "Maintain", "In The Country", and "Children Of The Mind". A very cool record from Goddy Oku – who's pictured on the back cover working the knobs on a big studio console – definitely making sure that he gets his hand in the way the album's put together! There's an offbeat funky vibe to most of these tracks – almost a mode that recalls the P&P Records sound of late 70s New York – as weird synth bits come into play alongside the basslines and vocals – peppering up the grooves, which themselves get a bit spaced out in the production! Things are never too trippy, but work nicely with the vocal trio of two gals and one guy – and the approach sounds especially great on the heavier funk tracks on the set. In a way, the mix of funk and club almost echoes the vibe of work on the P&P labels – but with a bit more punch and polish too, thanks to Clinton's great production. Great grooves from the legendary Peter Brown – way groovier than you'd guess from the title and cover – and an obscure set for the Queen Constance label of the P&P Records family! The tracks here are all upbeat and clubby – in an off-kilter style of funk that's got plenty of P&P touches, but which is also a bit different than some of the better-known work from the imprint. There's often a lot of riffing guitar alongside the drums – moving up and down, back and forth with a quick-vamping style in line with the percussion – almost in a way that's a precursor to ESG, especially given the rough sing-song female vocals on most tracks! There's a slightly rough quality to the work, but that's also part of the appeal – and again a link to an ESG mode – and side one includes vocal tracks like "The Freak", "Funky Phantom", "The Hot Foot", "Georgia Boys", "Pigeon Hustle", and "NY Slide" – while the other side has the same tracks done instrumentally! BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic 500th release by the BBE label – one that looks back at the past, and soars to the future! This special extended single package is a fantastic return to form for everyone involved – as underground club legends Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess get a whole new groove from Louie Vega – but with a warmly soaring vibe that's a great update of their classic approach! "Barely Breaking Even" is a classic from the Universal Robot Band – but this new take has both vocals and production that are a lot warmer than the original P&P Records version – and a groove that's even catchier too! All four mixes are over eight minutes long – served up here beautifully on a double 12" package! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Past Due, Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard music from the great Richie Weeks – an artist you might know for his work in New York dancefloor groups The Jammers and Weeks & Co – but who's heard here on cuts that represent his never-ending efforts to come up with great grooves in the studio! Much of this music was done in collaboration with Patrick Adams of P&P Records fame – and at some level, lots of the cuts have that nicely offbeat vibe that marks the best of P&P – a lean, mean style that's very different than the fuller sound of mainstream disco, and which really gets to the core of the groove! A few cuts have vocals from Tanyayette Willoughby, and one more features work from the great Leroy Burgess – on titles that include "I'll Keep You Up", "Just Cause I Don't Dance (voc mix)", "Love Magician (version 2)", "At The Disco", "I've Been There Before (version 2)", "Who Cares (version 4)", "How Many Times (version 4)", "Everyone Knows (version 3)", "Find That Disco Rhythm (version 2)", and "Just Cause I Don't Dance (version 2)". ✨✧ WildfireDance Hits ... LP
Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A cool collection of cuts from one of the hippest groups working on the Trinidad scene in the late 70s – a group who were making work for the clubs, but in a style that was often a lot more lean than mainstream disco! There's a nicely offbeat vibe to this work – not Caribbean funk, but maybe more in the territory of some of the quirkier work from the American underground, ala P&P Records – at least in the presentation and production! Yet there's also definitely some island elements at times too, more in the vocals and some of the themes of the lyrics – a slight nod to the earlier generation of Cymade and Beginning of the End, while still really retaining the group's own flavor. Titles include "Try Making Love", "The Dealer", "Sexy Lady You", "A Little More Love", "The Rebels", "Check It Out", "Livin On A String", and "Dance With Me". Also features bonus cuts – "Try Making Love (Al Kent version)" and "A Little More Love (Sol Power All Stars ext dub)". LP, Vinyl record album

City Line/Wackie's (Germany), 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A crucial compilation of earlier singles issued by Lloyd Bullwackie Barnes – yet also collected together at a level that's so obscure, so down to earth, you feel as if you're still discovering the music as a stack of 45s in the back room of some obscure record store in Brooklyn! Production is nice and earthy, especially compared to commercial reggae of the time – and as with other Barnes material of the time, the recordings here are almost to reggae labels like Island or Trojan what P&P Records was to the commercial soul labels on the New York scene! CD brings together both LP volumes – 20 tracks in all that include "So Much Loving" by Chosen Brothers, "Soon Sunday" by Roots Hangover, "I Belong To You" by Love Joys, "African Woman" by Wayne Jarrett, "John Brown" by John Clarke, "Black Harmony" by Jah Carlos, "Black Root" by Wanachi, "Selassie" by KC White, "Loving Man" by African Jamaicans, and "Recession" by John Clarke.
