Patrick Adams produced and arranged (and wrote and probably performed) this stunning set of spacey club grooves with a cool electronic feel, and a nice sense of mid to up-tempo rhythms. A massive batch of underground club from Richie Weeks – an artist who managed to get a few key records issued back in the day, but who also kept on working strongly in the studio to create a wealth of wonderful work that's only seeing the light of day well into the 21st Century! Every track here is a gem – lean, stripped-down club that's such a nice change from the bigger excesses of the disco generation – often with a very strong focus on the basslines and rhythms, with vocals from Weeks, plus guest work from Leroy Burgess and Tanyayette Whilloughby. A really unusual set of 70s grooves from the African scene – tracks that almost seem to be out of time, as many of them have electric touches and driving rhythms that sometimes feel as if they are laying the groundwork for clubbier styles in years to come! Yet these also aren't synth-heavy tracks, as in the South African pop to come in the mid 80s – as they're filled with plenty of live instrumentation, soulful vocals, and basslines and drum parts that really keep things gritty! A Bicentennial groover from The Cult – not the goth group of the 80s, but a funky west coast outfit with plenty of funk! There's a bit of an indie club vibe here, mixed in with the group's riffing and strutting rhythms – which creates a feel that's somewhere in the territory of the best P&P Records funky moments of the 70s – although with perhaps a bit of a Cali twist in the production, yet never one that's slick or uptight at all! Vocals are somewhat oddly recorded, almost flatter than the vocals – but that aspect also makes the album stand out nicely – as it's clearly not trying to cop any commercial competition, and instead is really going for its own vibe. A cool collection of cuts from one of the hippest groups working on the Trinidad scene in the late 70s – a group who were making work for the clubs, but in a style that was often a lot more lean than mainstream disco! There's a nicely offbeat vibe to this work – not Caribbean funk, but maybe more in the territory of some of the quirkier work from the American underground, ala P&P Records – at least in the presentation and production! Yet there's also definitely some island elements at times too, more in the vocals and some of the themes of the lyrics – a slight nod to the earlier generation of Cymade and Beginning of the End, while still really retaining the group's own flavor.
