Very nice spacey soul from the late 70s Columbus, Ohio scene by Norman Whiteside's Wee – a mindblowing mix of jazz funk sophistication, harmony vocals and electric keyboard led psychedelic soul! Whiteside started Wee after the dissolution of Capsoul Records, where he was an important figure to say the least – and here he's working with a great group of Columbus players harmony vocals in the frontline, backed by some great jazzy arrangements, with slight touches of a Mizell groove. Many of the tracks have a mellow midtempo feel, and some really innovative use of electric keyboards and flanged production on the vocals. A fantastic rediscovery from the fertile 70s Ohio scene! Proof that Helen Merrill was continuing to grow as a singer – well into her fourth decade of recording! Sweet acoustic folk rock from an obscure Colorado combo – a group who were perhaps a few years too late to make a mark with their sound, but who still sound wonderful nonetheless! This beautiful little record is the group's sole legacy – recorded for the tiny Owl Records label in 1973, and featuring a wonderfully harmonic approach! The instrumentation's all acoustic – warm guitars that slide in beautifully next to one another, plus mandolin, piano, and some occasional violin and recorder – and the vocals have a slightly spacey quality that fits in well with the themes of the tunes. Spare and beautiful work from pianist Ran Blake and vocalist Jeanne Lee – a record that follows a similar format to some of Blake's other sessions with singers, and which presents Lee's vocals in a powerfully unstripped mode! The set was recorded live in Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory of Music – with an echoey, "room" heavy style that really offsets the intimacy of the style. Blake's piano notes burst out and bounce around with stark qualities and strong sound – but Lee's vocals are close up in the mix, with less of the echo of the keys – in a breathy contrast that's really striking. A few tunes are original lyrics by Jeanne – including "Last Days/Hands", "Vanguard", and "I Like Your Style" – and other titles include "You Go To My Head", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "The Wind", "Where Are You", and "Corcovado". A really freewheeling performance from Japanese piano legend Takehiro Honda – one that's got a bolder sound than most of his studio work of the time, and is done at a level that easily rivals some of his most dynamic contemporaries on the scene! Tracks are long, and just feature the bass of Hideaki Mochizuki and drums of Ryojiro Furusawa alongside the piano – both players who can really match the energy of Honda, especially when he's in a soaring style that's somewhere in the territory of McCoy Tyner. Yet as always with some of these Japanese piano classics from the 70s, there's also a nice sense of balance in the performance – laid out over long tracks that include "Salaam Salaam", "Natural Tranquility", and a ballad medley that closes the set and brings the whole thing home. There's a spare, simple approach here that's really great – an amazingly fluide sense of invention and conception that marks Petrucciani as one of the key inheritors of a post-Evans sound on the keys – yet also one who's perhaps got a bit more personal and lyrical sensibility, especially compared to Evans' later years. Even Paul McCartney and George Harrison make a guest appearance! The lyrics chronicle a troubled soul, but man, did James ever making encroaching personal horrors sound sweet at his best. We think he's at his best here, and titles include "Don't Talk Now", "Knocking 'Round The Zoo", "Carolina In My Mind", "Night Owl", "Rainy Day Man", "The Blues Is Just A Bad Dream" and more. CD

A quadruple-header from Ramsey Lewis – four albums from his great 70s electric period on Columbia Records! First up is Funky Serenity – sweet electric funk from Ramsey Lewis! The album's one of his best from the 70s – and it's got Ramsey on Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and other keyboards, grooving away in an open-ended 70s mode that still retains all the heavy soul of his classic work for Chess. Morris Jennings adds in some very nice percussion with his drum work, and Cleveland Eaton's on funky bass, giving the set a strong bottom groove. Features the sublime sample cut "My Love For You", a great version of "Knights In White Satin" that's done with a weird spacey groove, plus the tracks "Kufany Mapenzi (Making Love)", "Serene Funk", "What It Is!", and "Dreams". Golden Hits isn't a "best of", but instead has Ramsey and his funky mid 70s trio with Morris Jennings and Cleveland Eaton revisiting some of his best loved material from the Cadet years, but with the groovy Rhodes and wah wah sound that we dig so much about his CBS recordings. Unlike some of the other records from this period, the group's nice and stripped down, just the electric piano, bass and drums, so the groove's nice and wide open, Ramsey and company popping along with the sanctified soulful vibe of his 60s work, but updating their sound with some nice electric touches. 9 numbers in all: "Hang On Sloopy", "Blues For The Night Owl", "Hi-Heel Sneakers", "Carmen", "Delilah", "Wade In The Water", "Slippin' Into Darkness", "Somethin' You Got", and "The In Crowd". Solar Wind was cut smack dab in the middle of Ramsey's glory days at Columbia Records – with great production help and work on bass from the mighty Cleveland Eaton! The style is nice and lean, with just some occasional fuller touches – and Ramsey plays plenty of Fender Rhodes, in addition to bits of Arp and moog too – in a setting that's mostly trio, with a few guest players stepping into the mix from track to track! There's a nice degree of fuzz at points, thanks to added help from Steve Cropper – and titles include a great funky version of "Summer Breeze", plus "Solar Wind", "Come Down In Time", "Love for A Day", "Hummingbird", "Jamaican Marketplace", and "Sweet & Tender You". Sun Goddess is one of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums ever – and a perfect summation of the genius that was brewing on the Chicago scene in the late 60s and early 70s! The album has Ramsey working strongly with Earth Wind & Fire – no surprise, given his close ties to Maurice White, who was the drummer in Ramsey's trio before starting his own group – and the shared relationship both artists had with producer Charles Stepney! The three were all key parts of the late 60s sound at Chess Records – but here, they've brought the same soulful energy to Columbia – working in a wider, more mature groove for the 70s – one that has Lewis' wicked Fender Rhodes lines stretching out strongly over tight, compressed, funky lines from EWF! The centerpiece of the set is the massive 7 minute "Sun Goddess", but there's lots of other nice ones like "Living For The City", "Gemini Rising", and "Jungle Strut". A great little collection that seeks to put the Bristol scene on the map – and to show the kind of inventive jazz the city's been offering up in recent years! The compilers aim to demonstrate that Bristol has as many newly-creative acts as the sort that have been bubbling up in London on labels like Brownswood – and the range of material here really shows a similar way of blending newer ideas and older execution – especially strong in the rhythm department, and with an effortless mixing of acoustic and electric modes. Howard Tate is one of the most overlooked soul singers of the late 60's – or at least he was, until finally getting his due in recent years! Howard's got an incredible vocal style that ranks him right up there with the best deep soul singers of his time – and a heartbreaking way of delivering a vocal that's completely sublime. His lack of recognition at the time might have had something to do with the fact that although Tate recorded for Verve, the company was mostly a jazz label – and didn't really push its soul catalog that strongly. But don't let the label fool you, because this is prime soul material – on a par with the best from Stax or Atlantic at the time – with Jerry Ragovoy doing the production, and Howard singing a great mix of hard soul and smoother uptown sounds. Lots of heavy love here – a wonderful sense of rapport between the great tenorist Al Cohn and piano genius Jimmy Rowles! Both musicians were still recording heavily at the time of this album, but the record seems to capture them in a really special space that still stands strongly on its own – a mode that's much more relaxes than some of the Pablo Records sessions of the time, and which has Cohn in an especially striking mode – really hitting these openly-blown, often-angular lines that are dripping with soul – more heart and feeling than we might normally expect from him, matched equally by Jimmy Rowles' wonderful phrasing on piano – very much here at the top shelf level he delivered with Stan Getz on The Peacocks album. A killer album of funky blues – recorded by Howlin Wolf during the period when Chess/Cadet was backing its older artists up with some of the newer funk musicians it had working in its studios! The overall sound works quite well – and although purists at the time moaned at the way artists like Wolf, Etta James, and Bo Diddley were being handled (especially with a "we know better than them" message on the cover like this!), the funky blues records from this time actually seem to be some of the most enduring from Chess – especially with younger listeners in the 21st Century! A big part of the success here goes to producers Charles Stepney and Gene Barge – who helped bring together a younger batch of players for Wolf's backing – including Pete Cosey and Phil Upchurch on guitars, Louis Satterfield on bass, and Morris Jennings on drums. Howlin Wolf sings the blues, and comes across in a way that influences an entire generation too – with that raw, raspy sound that made the singer a perfect blend of delta roots and contemporary sounds that were bubbling up in the postwar years! A huge amount of material from The Rockin Berries – one of the great almost-rans of the UK scene in the 60s – a group who should have stormed our shores during the British Invasion, but somehow got left off the boat! The group's got everything shared by all their best contemporaries – a great way with a tune, an ear for a catchy hook, and a way of mixing harmonized vocals with harder rocking moments at a level that means that there's plenty at the core, and the combo need no sweetening up in the studio! They also have two lead singers – Clive Lea and Geoff Turton – who sound great when harmonizing together, and can also split off and really let the group cover a nice range of material. Both of the albums here were produced by Brit sound maestro John Schroeder – Rockin Berries In Town and Life Is Just A Bowl Of Berries – and the set also features 36 more bonus tracks from singles and EP releases at the time – 60 tracks in all!
