Thelonious MonkLive At The 1964 Monterey Jazz Festival ... CD
Monterey Jazz Festival/Concord, 1964. Used ... $4.99
Monk doing his thing at the '64 Monterey Jazz Festival – backed by his core group of Charlie Rouse on tenor, Steve Swallow on bass and Ben Riley on drums – plus additional backing by the Monterey Workshop crew on a couple – a recording released now for the first time ever! Monk's playing here with space and nuance, but still kicks up the energy in spots – incorporating the accompanying players on the closing 2 tracks – which included Buddy Collette on sax & flute, Lou Blackburn on trombone, Jack Nimitz on baritone, and Bobby Bryant & Melvin more on trumpets. The takes all run north of 8 minutes, and titles include "Blue Monk", "Evidence", "Bright Mississippi", "Rhythm-A-Ning", plus "Think Of One" and the immortal "Straight No Chaser" – fleshed out with the bigger band! ✨✧ David Boykin ExpanseLive At The Velvet Lounge ... CD
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
"Expanse" is a mighty big name for the group that David Boykin uses on this record – especially given that the combo's only a quintet – but that's ok with us, because the sound here is more than large enough to warrant the name! Boykin's working with a great batch of players from the Chicago scene here – including frequent musical partner Nicole Mitchell on flute, sliding wonderfully alongside David's saxophones – plus Jim Baker on piano, Josh Abrams on bass, and Mike Reed on drums. The album features two longish tracks, both composed by Boykin with a vision that's freely expressive, yet never too free – a perfect balance that reigns things in wonderfully, and which shows him to be one of the key current heirs to a Chicago tradition that runs back to the early AACM and Sun Ra! Titles include "Nuance" and "47th Street Ghost". CD
(CDR release – direct from the artist!)

Chico HamiltonOriginal Chico Hamilton Quintet Live At The Strollers ... CD
Pacific Jazz/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1955. Used ... $9.99
A rare set of work by Chico Hamilton's original quintet – the groundbreaking lineup that features Buddy Collette on flute and saxes, Fred Katz on cello, Jim Hall on guitar, and Carson Smith on drums – all working together in a really unique blend of rhythm and melody! The sound here is a bit looser than the group's studio albums for Pacific Jazz – given the live setting of the album, at the Strollers club in Long Beach. Yet despite that locale, the sound is quite clear and clean – just right for bringing out the subtle nuances in the string work by Katz and Hall, and some of the lighter notes laid out by Collette's reeds. But there's also a firmer, bolder sound here too – a bit more of a groove than you might expect at times. Titles include "Fast Flute", "Cute Little Deal", "Crazy Rhythm", "Caravan", "Change It", "Free Form", and "A Mood". CD
(2007 digipak pressing.)

✨✧ Stanley Cowell, Frederick Waits & Buster WilliamsWe Three ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
A magical session of equally-matched players – one that's less of a straight trio set than a joint collaboration between piano, bass, and drums! Stanley Cowell's work on the keys is certainly a strong force in the set – but the loose and lively drum work of Waits is every bit as much a key factor in the set, as is the bass work of Williams – which is recorded here with just the right sense of depth and tone to bring out the nuances in his playing. The whole thing dances amazingly with a sense of joy and life that surpasses most of Cowell's other small group work from the period – done with an energy that's quite different than the Strata East years, but no less compelling. Titles include "Winter Reflections", "Deceptacon", "Air Dancing", "Sendai Sendoff", "Christina", and "Sienna Welcome My Darling". CD

✨✧ Peter Erskine/John Taylor/Palle DanielssonAs It Was – You Never Know/Time Being/As It Is/Juni (4CD set) ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1993/1994/1996/1999. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A pretty wonderful ECM package that puts together 4 records by the Peter Erskine/John Taylor/Palle Danielsson trio made throughout the 1990s – You Never Know, Time Being, As It Is, and Juni – excellent work that holds up incredibly well! It's really lovely, melodic material – done in a more nuanced, lyrical realm than you might expect from the drummer Erskine if you're mostly familiar with him from Weather Report. His intuitive interplay with bassist Palle Daniesson is great, but the pianist John Taylor deserves a ton of credit for the mood here – especially on his own compositions, which are arguably the heart and soul of the trio's work together. Great stuff – and it's all the easier to appreciate how consistent it is when collected here in a 4CD box set! Nice little booklet of notes, too. CD
