Nina SimoneFodder On My Wings ... LP
Carrere/Verve, 1982. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99
An overlooked album from the legendary Nina Simone – recorded in Paris in the early 80s, and not circulated as much as some of her records from the 60s and 70s – but every bit as compelling in its own sort of way! Nina's working here with a greater array of global elements than on previous recordings – very much in that way that the French scene was embracing sounds from the Caribbean and African cultures in these post-colonial years, and using them to forge a wealth of wonderful new styles in the studios of Paris. The approach is still jazz-based, but with lots of earthy percussion, including some handled by Nina with her own piano work – a mode that's not foisted on Simone by another producer, but arranged and conceived by the lady herself. Lyrics are in French and English, and titles include "I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive", "They Took My Hand", "Stop", "Liberian Calypso", "Vous Etes SEuls Mais Je Desire Etre Avec Vous", "Fodder In Her Wings", "Thandewye", "Heaven Belongs To You", and "Le Peuple En Suisse". Nina SimoneLittle Girl Blue (aka Jazz As Played In An Exclusive Side Street Club) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Bethlehem/BMG, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 27.99 On October 22, 2021
A classic set of early jazz recordings by Nina Simone – one of her first albums ever, but already with an approach that's quite different from other singers of the time! Nina's singing a fair bit of standards here, but she brings a deeply personal approach to the material – inflecting the tunes with gospel-inspired soul, and showing some very slight folksy touches – of the sort that would come in more heavily on later records, but which is already shining pretty strongly here! Nina accompanies herself on some mighty soulful piano – with bass from Jimmy Bond and drums from Al Heath – on titles that include "Plain Gold Ring", "Good Bait", "He Needs Me", "Don't Smoke In Bed", and "I Loves You Porgy". Nina SimoneNina Simone At Town Hall (180 gram dark pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Colpix/4 Men With Beards, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 23.99
An important early live show for Nina Simone – a move from the world of small nightclubs (as mentioned in the title of her first record), to the classy Town Hall venue – working in front of an audience filled with left-leaning listeners who were the perfect crowd to get the unique bag she was working on at the time! The performance is a great one – mellow, moody, and a bit folksy – with Nina singing and playing piano with power that really rings out in the larger space – really egged on by the enthusiastic response of the audience. Titles include her classic reading of "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair", plus "The Other Woman", "Under The Lowest", "Summertime", "You Can Have Him", "Wild Is The Wind", "Return Home", and "Cotton Eyed Joe". Nina SimoneVery Rare Evening ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
A very rare evening indeed – a sweet little live set recorded by Nina Simone during her soulful height at RCA – but issued years after that time, and only briefly on a small indie label! The setting here is wonderful – a small combo in the background with the great Weldon Irvine on Hammond, playing these soulful lines that are mighty lean and plenty powerful – spurred on by rhythms from Al Shackman on guitar, Gene Perla on bass, and Don Alias on drums! The record also features two female backup singers on a few cuts – giving the album an almost Sweet Inspirations like touch at moments – but overall, the feel is straight hip Nina – that unique blend of soul, folk, and jazz that pushed things to the next level at the end of the 60s! Includes the great original "Revolution", plus the track "The Other Woman", "In The Morning", "Ain't Go No/I Got Life", "Save Me", and "To Love Somebody". LP, Vinyl record album

Bethlehem/180g, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 On October 22, 2021
We're not sure if Bethlehem pulled this nice little collection of its all star cast of female vocalists together as a loss leader, or kind of after the fact to re-capitalize on some of their recordings, but you can't argue with the stellar lineup, featuring a dozen tracks by some of the finest female jazz vocalists of the day: "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands", "I Loves You, Porgy", "For All We Know" and "African Mailman" by Nina Simone, "Cottage For Sale", "What Is There To Say", "Try a Little Tenderness" and "Good Bye" by Chris Connor, and "Old Devil Moon", "You Made Me Care", "Last Time For Love" and "To Much In Love To Care" by Carmen McRae. ✨✧ Nina SimoneEmergency Ward! (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great little album cut by Nina Simone during the time she was working with Weldon Irvine – a live album that really has the lady stretching out, and showing off all the cool, complicated grooves she brought to a concert setting! Weldon did the arrangements, and they've got a very righteous feel overall – which really seems to inspire Simone in her interpretations of the tunes, as she improvises a lot and really takes off with the lyrics! The album includes a really haunting version of "My Sweet Lord", the classic "Poppies", and a great poem/song called "Today Is A Killer" that goes on for over 15 minutes! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nina SimoneNina Simone – The Montreux Years (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BMG, Late 60s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A great addition to the Nina Simone catalog – material recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival on a number of different dates – all very different performances that really show the legendary singer at the top of her game! The setting shifts here from date to date – the package features shows from 1968, 1976, 1981, 1987, and 1990 – with early material that features a full group with Henry Young on guitar and Sam Waymon on organ, plus later sets that feature a trio, a duo with harmonica player Claude Nobs, a solo piano/vocal date, and a final set with guitar, vibes, and keyboards. As with other live performances, Nina is completely stunning – able to completely transform tunes with that legendary vocal style, and augmenting her words with all the right touches on piano. Titles include "Just In Time", "African Mailman", "Me Me Quitte Pas", "Liberian Calypso", "Stars", "Don't Smoke In Bed", "Little Girl Blue (parts 1 & 2)", "Backlash Blues", "See Line Woman", "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", "Four Women", "No Woman No Cry", "Montreux Blues", and "My Baby Just Cares For Me". Weldon IrvineLiberated Brother (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Nodlew/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
Landmark early work from the legendary Weldon Irvine – recorded way back when he was first coming to fame with Nina Simone, but done as an obscure indie effort for his tiny Nodlew label! The set's a wicked batch of keyboard-heavy funk – at a level that's similar to some of the best titles on Black Jazz or Strata East at the time, but also filled with an even richer array of colors and musical ideas. Weldon's work on electric piano is worth the price of admission alone – often spare, spacious, and perfectly placed – especially on the funky classics "Homey", "Mr Clean", and "Sister Sanctified" – a tune later cut by Stanley Turrentine, but heard here in Weldon's original version! Other cuts include "Gloria", "Juggah Buggah", "Blues Wel-Don", and "Liberated Brother". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Terry CallierNew Folk Sound Of Terry Callier (180 gram 2LP expanded edition) ... LP
Prestige/Craft, 1964. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Terry Callier's first album – recorded in 1964 when he was a wee teen hanging around Chicago's folk scene! As the title indicates, the album's definitely got a folk-styled sound – but also as the "new" implies, it's got a sound all it's own, fresh and free – and that sound is the genius that is Terry Callier! This is very stripped down material, very dark and brooding – a good chance to hear Terry before he hit the Chess studios and they backed him up with a lot of orchestrations (although we love the orchestrations, too.) The material has a soulful spiritual feel, and is sung with a lot of passion over acoustic guitar. Think of Nina Simone's folksier stuff from the same time, if you need a reference. Tracks include "900 Miles", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "It's About Time", "Promenade In Green", and "I'm A Drifter". This expanded edition includes bonus tracks – "Be My Woman", "Jack O' Diamonds", and "The Golden Apples Of The Sun" – plus alternate takes of "Promenade In Green" and "900 Miles". ✨✧ Beverly Glenn-CopelandBeverly Copeland (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
CBC/Return To Analog (Canada), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Completely sublime work from Beverly Glenn Copeland – a really unique artist who's almost a genre unto herself – and who sings here in a mix of folk, jazz, and soul – maybe resonant with work at the time by Terry Callier or Nina Simone, but every bit as individual as the best from those two giants too! The performance was recorded by CBC at a key moment in Beverly's career – after a time she'd spent on the scene in Montreal, really soaking up different influences and exploring musical pathways away from her American roots – to a point where she emerges here as a very righteous, yet very personal singer – clearly not immediately interested in chart success, even though she's got the power of a young Roberta Flack. Titles include "Northwind", "Swords Of Gold", "Don't Despair", "Nothing Beautiful", "Song From Beads", "Untitled", "Interval", "Reflections", and "Durocher". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kandace SpringsWoman Who Raised Me ... LP
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the straightest jazz set we've heard to date from Kandace Springs – a record that's got a great old school vibe overall, and the sorts of moody, dark-tinged qualities that takes us back to vintage material by Abbey Lincoln or Nina Simone – something we might not have said about Kandace on previous albums! Springs plays piano, and mostly keeps things in a tight combo mode – with her vocals in the lead, but with occasional guest help from artists who include Chris Potter on tenor, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, David Sanborn on alto, Christian McBride on bass, and Norah Jones on piano and vocals – on tunes penned by artists as diverse as Bob Dorough, Hoagy Carmichael, Lauryn Hill, and Sade. Titles include "Devil May Care", "The Nearness Of You", "Strange Fruit", "Killing Me Softly", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Ex-Factor", "Pearls", "I Put A Spell On You", and "Gentle Rain". ✨✧ Aretha FranklinYoung, Gifted, & Black (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautiful album that perfectly mixes both sides of Aretha Franklin's talents – the hard-edged soul singer who first flourished at Atlantic records in the late 60s, and the artist who was growing even more as a vocalist – really reaching out her wings to more sophisticated material! There's a balance here that makes the record one of the deepest that Franklin ever recorded for Atlantic – lots of larger Arif Mardin touches, but also some raw moments that really round things out – on titles that include Aretha's classic take on the Weldon Irvine/Nina Simone tune "Young Gifted & Black", the funky classic "Rock Steady", the wonderful mellow groover "Day Dreaming", the hit "Brand New Me", and the strangely compelling "First Snow In Kokomo" – plus other titles that include "All The King's Horses", "Oh Me Oh My", "Border Song", "Didn't I Blow Your Mind", "April Fools", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "The Long & Winding Road". ✨✧ Michael KiwanukaLove & Hate ... LP
Interscope, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A set that arguably has even more majesty than the debut album from Michael Kiwanuka – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of that now-classic record! Production here is by Dangermouse, Inflo, and Paul Butler – and there's an airiness to some songs that really has Kiwanuka's vocals floating in space – maybe more iconic than before, and held nicely in a balance between open sonic elements and more crispily-focused instrumental touches. Michael uses folksy currents in his vocals that almost recall Nina Simone during her Philips Records years – and titles include "Black Man In A White World", "One More Night", "Love & Hate", "Rule The World", "Father's Child", "The Final Frame", and "Cold Little Heart".
