Nicole Mitchell's Sonic ProjectionsSecret Escapades Of Velvet Anderson ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2014. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A loving tribute to the late Fred Anderson – delivered by the great Nicole Mitchell – a wonderful player whose music and style was shaped by Anderson's longstanding role as a teacher on the Chicago jazz scene! The set's one of the most expressive, and possibly one of the most personal records we've heard from Nicole in years – with sharper edges and more spiritual currents than even some of her already great albums for other labels. Core energy comes from Nicole's soaring lines on flute, mixed with tenor from David Boykin, piano and Wurlitzer from Craig Taborn, and drums and a bit of guitar from Chad Taylor – all familiar partners who really share both Mitchell's musical vision, and her respect for Anderson. As the album moves on, it only gets better and better – and Nicole elevates herself to new heights with these quietly expressive passages – on titles that include "Scaling The Underground", "Discovery Of The Jewel", "Anderson's Plan", "The Heroic Rescue", "The Labyrinth Of Capture", and "Running The Rooftops". ✨✧ Nicole Mitchell's Sonic ProjectionsEmerald Hills ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the sharpest sessions we've heard from Nicole Mitchell in years – a record that still holds onto the spiritual depth she's developed strongly over the past decade, yet one that also returns to some of the bolder avant modes of her roots! The group here is nice and lean – Mitchell on flutes, alongside David Boykin on tenor, Craig Taborn on piano, and Chad Taylor on drums and percussion – a Chicago group recorded in a comfortable local setting, one that really allows them to stretch out and hit new heights! It's great to hear Mitchell hitting so many voices with her instrument – and there's a broad range of tones and moods that really reminds us of the early AACM tradition. Titles include "Surface Of Syrius", "Visitations", "Ritual & Rebellion", "Chocolate Chips", "Wild Life", "Wishes", and "Affirmations". CD
