✨✧ Nana VasconcelosNana – Nelson Angelo – Novelli ... LP
Saravah/Altercat (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible trio of talents – three Brazilian giants, but all turning out a very unique session that was originally issued on the famous French Saravah label – home to some really groundbreaking music in the 70s! The set features Nana Vasconcelos on berimbau, percussion, and a bit of vocals – working alongside Nelson Angelo on guitar, piano, and organ – and getting a bit of help on bass and guitar from Novelli. Things start quite spare – with lots of haunting berimbau lines – and the album then builds up the sound as things move on, layering in the other instruments for a richer sound, yet one that's still quite acoustic and relatively spare overall – almost to the career of Vasconcelos what the Paris recordings were to that of Baden Powell! Titles include "No Sul Do Polo Norte", "Pinote", "Garimpo", "Baiao Do Acordar", "Aranda", "No Norte Do Polo Sul", and "Toshiro". LP, Vinyl record album

Milton NascimentoMaria Maria/Ultimo Trem ... CD
Far Out (UK), 1976/1980. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99 6.99
Interesting, soulful work from Milton Nascimento – two different scores from the 70s, both written for ballet! The approach here is similar to some of his studio work of the time – an sophisticated yet soulful blend of instrumentation and vocals, baroque yet touched with the straightforwardness of rock, and never overly complicated, despite the nature of the setting. The work is essential if you like any of Milton's mid 70s studio albums – and performers on the projects include Joao Donato, Helcio Miltio, Beto Guedes, Nelson Angelo, Novelli, Luis Avellar, Toninho Horta, and Milton himself, leading the groups on both sessions. Titles on the first disc (Maria Maria) include the title track, "Lilia", "A Chamada", "Pai Grande", "Seducao", "Francisco", "Boca A Boca", "De Repente Maria Sumiu", and lots more! Titles on disc two (Ultimo Trem) include "Abertuna: Minas", "Ponta De Areia", "Povo Da Raca Brasil", "A Viagem", "Ultimo Trem", "Roupa Nova", and "Decreto", "Bicho Homem", "A Lua Girou" and more. 36 tracks on two CDs! Sarah VaughanO Som Brazileiro De Sarah Vaughan (aka I Love Brazil) ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1977. Very Good Gatefold ... $7.99
One of a number of excellent albums of Brazilian jazz cut by Sarah Vaughan – a surprisingly great move for the singer, whose style had begun to wear thin by the mid 70s. The record's got a pretty faithful sound, and the musicians on the set include Jobim on piano, plus Mauricio Einhorn, Nelson Angelo, and Helio Delmiro – all Brazilian greats in their own right. Danilo Caymmi and Milton Nascimento join in on vocals, and tracks include "The Day It Rained", I Live To Love You", "Roses & Roses", "Bridges", "A Little Tear", and "Courage". LP, Vinyl record album
(Brazilian pressing. Cover has edge wear, unglued top seam, small sticker remnants in back, and is bent a bit at the sides.)

✨✧ Lo BorgesLo Borges (1972) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Lo Borges – one of the best singer/songwriters on the Brazilian scene of the 70s! Borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the Club Da Esquina album by Milton Nascimento – and his work as part of Milton's "corner club" really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. Yet Borges is almost an equally great talent on his own – with a soaring, soulful approach that's every bit as great as the best Nascimento material from the period – and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! The sound here is completely sublime right from the start – music that moves us, even if we can't understand the language of the lyrics – like some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. There's maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the Milton Nascimento work of the period – but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation – which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include Beto Guedes, Nelson Angelo, Toninho Horta, and Tenorio Jr. The songwriting is amazing – and titles include "Cancao Postal", "Voce Fica Melhor Assim", "Nao Foi Nada", "Calibre", "Faca Seu Jogo", "Toda Essa Agua", "Pensa Voce", "Como O Machando", and "Aos Baroes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with a bonus lyric insert too!)

✨✧ Ithamara KooraxLove Dance – The Ballad Album ... CD
Milestone/JSR, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A relatively mellow vocal outing from Ithamara Koorax – a voice that was introduced to us from her appearances on some groovy Brazilian dancefloor tunes, including some of those from Dom Um Romao's albums! The style here is quite different – very laidback, and in the ballad mode you'd expect from the "love" in the title. Instrumentation is a blend of mellow Brazilian and American jazz styles – with work by Jose Roberto Bertrami, Dom Um Romao, Luiz Bonfa, and Nelson Angelo – on titles that include "I Loved You", "Love Dance", "La Puerta", "Man Alone", "Amparo", and "Someday". ✨✧ Milton NascimentoMilagre Dos Peixes ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Milton Nascimento's darker LPs, with a great set of tracks that have a deep rock feel to them, yet which maintain all of the soulful spirit that was in Nascimento's earlier recordings. Nascimento's working here with a great set of musicians that include some of Brazil's most farthest-reaching jazz players of the 70s – Nelson Angelo, Toninho Horta, Paulo Moura, Wagner Tiso, and Nana Vasconcelos – all of whom come together beautifully in baroque arrangements with a complicated, yet honest feel. Originally released as an album, plus a single, this remastered CD includes all the original tracks – with titles that include "Milagre Dos Peixes", "Pablo", "A Chamda", "Os Escravos De Jo", and "Sacramento".
