✨✧ Mongo SantamariaLa Bamba ... LP
Columbia, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Mongo Santamaria at the height of his Latin Soul years – working on a cool Columbia session titled after an earlier hit, but served up with his new lean sound of the late 60s! The album's got that perfect Santamaria combo from the time – a group that features trumpet and these wonderfully sharp arrangements from the great Marty Sheller – plus very smoking reed work from a young Hubert Laws, wailing away on flute and tenor, and Bobby Capers on alto and baritone – both players who mix jazz and soul instrumental modes, to bring a hell of a lot of feeling to the overall sound of the band – in ways that really get past more familiar use of trumpet or trombone in other Latin combos. The band grooves nicely on original material like "Streak O Lean", "Ricky Tick", "Do It To It", "Fatback", "Coconut Milk", and "Jose Outside" – and they also reprise Mongo's big hit "Watermelon Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(360 Sound stereo pressing, in great shape!)

(Vintage Japanese pressing – in a flipback cover! Cover has one bumped corner, which also has a light stain on back – but overall the whole thing looks great.)

Columbia (Japan), Late 1960s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Let's party is right! Mongo and his Latin Soul combo groove through a tight tasty batch of tracks, with heavy conga from Mongo, and killer soulful solos by Bobby Capers, Marty Sheller, and Hubert Laws. The set's got a few soul covers – like "Walk On By", "Shotgun", and "I Got You" – plus some originals like "Baila Dance" and "El Bikini", and a nice cover of "Call Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing – nice and heavy!)

✨✧ Mongo SantamariaYambu ... LP
Fantasy, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Mongo's great early records, with a spooky Afro-Cuban sound, and a great assortment of drummers that includes Francisco Aquabella, Carlos Vidal, Willie Bobo, and Modesto Duran. The overall vibe is much more traditional than Mongo's other albums – and there's none of the pop Latin jazz of his years at Columbia records, or his "Watermelon Man" era at Riverside. Cuts include "Mi Guanguanco", "Timbales & Bongo", "Yeye", and "Columbia", and the sound is nice and raw. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cal TjaderMas Ritmo Caliente (second cover) ... LP
Fantasy, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
You can't get mas ritmo than this – given that Cal Tjader's working in a smoking Latin vibe throughout – and has managed to get some great extra help in his efforts! The album was mostly recorded in Chicago and New York, and these different locals seem to give the record a slightly different flavor than some of Tjader's other west coast dates from the 50s – a slightly harder Latin groove, thanks to the presence of players like Jose Chombo Silva on tenor sax, Gerald Sanfino on flute and alto, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, Mongo Santamaria on congas, Willie Bobo on timbales, and Luis Kant on percussion. Vince Guaraldi's on piano on all tracks – bringing in a nice dose of warmth next to Cal's vibes – and titles include "Mongorama", "Ritmo Africano", "Ritmo Rumba", "Tumbao", "Perdido", and "Cuco On Timbales". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red vinyl pressing – in nice shape!)

✨✧ Ronnie CuberEleventh Day Of Aquarius ... LP
Xanadu, 1978. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Although baritone saxophonist Ronnie Cuber has played on countless funk and jazz sessions over the years (think of work by Lonnie Smith or Mongo Santamaria to name just a few!), this album's one of the few that he ever cut as a leader during the classic years. The style of the album is in a spiritual searching mode – kind of like work on Strata East, and a lot more soulful than you might expect. Part of the thanks for this goes to pianist Mickey Tucker, who's in fine McCoy Tyner-esque form here – laying out spiralling lines that let Cuber and trumpeter Tom Harrell solo out in a powerful way. The titles will give you a real feel for the vibe of the set – as tracks include "Taurus Lullaby", "Open Air", "Sunburst", and "Cumana". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El ChicanoThis Is El Chicano ... LP
Shadybrook, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An excellent bit of Latin funk from this cool LA group. The set includes a great cover of Mongo Santamaria's "Para Ti", with a cool bassline, good guitar grooves, and a nice funk sound, plus a great Latin number called "Ron Con Con". Other tracks include "Mello Hi", "Dancing Mama", and "Sweet Sensation". Great stuff, and we don't see it that often! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fania All-StarsLive At Yankee Stadium Vol 1 ... LP
Fania, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
By the mid 70s, the New York Latin scene was boomin' so large it could easily fill venues like Yankee Stadium – as you'll hear on this excellent live set from the Fania All-Stars, a monster record that easily ranks with the best live Latin sides of the time – like Eddie Palmieri at Sing Sing, the Tico-Alegre All Stars at Carnegie Hall, or Mongo Santamaria at Yankee Stadium! Tracks are nice and long – a real mix of soul and Latin, with slight funk and electric touches – and players include Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Bobby Valentin, Mongo Santamaria, Ricardo Ray, and Roberto Roena. Vocals are by a host of singers that include Santos Colon, Hector Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, and Celia Cruz – and titles on this first volume include "Pueblo Latino", "Mi Gente", and "Soy Guajiro". ✨✧ Luis GascaLittle Giant ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A rare album by the great west coast Latin trumpeter Luis Gasca, and argubly the best album he ever recorded! The set was recorded in New York during the late 60's, and features a great lineup of musicians that includes Paul Griffin on piano, Joe Henderson on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Mongo santamaria on conga, and Bernard Purdie on drums. The style's a mix of soul jazz, Latin, and bits of modal riffing – and the record features some beautiful large arrangements by Gasca and Mark Levine, in a style that's a bit like some of Duke Pearson's work from the late 60s, but handled with a bit more of an edge. Tracks include "Coisa No. 2", "Afro Blue", "Joy Ride", and "Sweet Pea". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lonnie SmithMove Your Hand ... LP
Blue Note, 1969. Sealed Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Funky funky funky! Lonnie plays live with a tight group that includes tenor, guitar, and some very heavy drumming – really wailing at a level that was surprising for funky organists of the time, and which really set the pace for a whole new generation! The players are more obscure than on the usual Blue Note sides – save for Ronnie Cuber, who played baritone with Mongo Santamaria, and is one of the most underrated 60s funky players. Recorded live at the Club Harlem in Atlantic City, and with a deep raw funky sound that must have blown the roof off the club! Titles include "Move Your Hand", "Layin' In the Cut", "Charlie Brown", and "Sunshine Superman". One of his best ever! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Latin Jazz QuintetLatin Soul ... LP
Prestige/New Jazz, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful batch of Latin Jazz grooves – played by a group who more than deserved the right to call themselves the Latin Jazz Quintet! The core sound features vibes and piano jamming away nicely, really hitting some great modal rhythms – but this album's also got an added bonus in the presence of alto player Bobby Capers, an old bandmate of Mongo Santamaria, and a real killer of a player on a hard Latin groove! Capers really makes this album shine – cutting in some hard-edged sax solos amidst the warmer pulse of the vibes and piano – and titles include some hard grooving classics like "Rip a Dip", "Dilly Dali", "Blues Waltz", "Milestones", "Red Top", and "Sunday Go Meetin'". ✨✧ Ricardo RayLet's Get Down To The Real Nitty Gritty ... LP
Alegre, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A very wild album from Ricardo Ray – sort of a mix of Latin soul styles in the mode of work by Mongo Santamaria, but a lot more messed up! The album's got a number of 60s soul covers – but they're done here by Ricardo in kind of a party Latin mode, touched with a bit of garage soul vocals, in a way that makes the whole album quite upbeat and playful throughout – filled with non-stop groovers that keep on delivering the goods! Our favorite cut is the original "Soul Mexico", which has this storming chanting verse, that then unwinds into a totally catchy chorus with overlapping melodic lines – but the whole album's great, and other tracks include "Ya Ya", "I Want You To Be My Girl", "Mony Mony", "Shout", and "Soul Man". ✨✧ Cal TjaderNight At The Blackhawk ... LP
Fantasy, 1958. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of Cal Tjader's best late 50s dates for Fantasy Records – thanks to some smoking tenor sax from Jose "Chombo" Silva! The album has Cal working in the very comfortable territory of San Francisco's Blackhawk Nightclub – in a combo that also features familiar players Vince Guaraldi on piano, Al McKibbon on bass, Willie Boby on drums, and Mongo Santamaria on congas – all musicians who'd previously helped Tjader hit some of his best Latin grooves! But the addition of Silva on a few tracks here really makes the set crackle – giving it a gutsy, soulful fee that you don't always get on some of Tjader's other records. Tracks are longish – and titles include the nice original "Bill B", plus jazzy versions of "I Love Paris", "Blue & Sentimental", and "Night In Tunisia". LP, Vinyl record album
