✨✧ Afro Blues Quintet Plus OneLet My People Go/Afro Rock ... 7-inch
Mira, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Righteous grooving from this very hip combo – 2 numbers that are both plenty tasty! "Let My People Go" has all the hipness of the time – a bit of soul jazz, Latin, and progressive grooving that really takes the number somewhere! "Afro Rock" has a punchier feel from the get go – nice snapping drums, cool vibes, and a jangly kind of soul jazz groove that's made even better by this great sax solo! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Coleman HawkinsHawk & The Hunter ... LP
Mira, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual chapter of the Coleman Hawkins catalog – an album of easy-going ballads and late nite tracks, recorded with backings from arranger Frank Hunter – hence the title of the set! Hunter's using some lush strings on the set, but not in a way that gets in front of Hawkins' horn – and Coleman gets plenty of room to blow on the session, recorded here in a nice echoey mode that brings out the deepness of his tone even more than usual! Rhythm is by 2 different trios – one with Dick Hyman, Milt Hinton, and Osie Johnson; the other with Hank Jones, George Duvivier, and Jimmie Crawford – and tunes include "Easy Walker", "Traumerei", "Lazy Butterfly", "Pebbles", "Not Quite Right", "Whisper To Me", "Lonely Tenor", and "Hawk Talk". Dobie GraySings For In-Crowders That Go Go-Go ... LP
Charger, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $29.99
A massive LP for Dobie Gray – following on the heels of his hit single, "The In Crowd". The tune's quite a recognizeable oldie – and the rest of the record has a similar LA pop soul sound, with arrangements and songs by Billy Page, and a groove that's like some of the rougher west coast soul coming out in the mid 60s on labels like Cash, Money, or Mira. Titles include "Monkey Jerk", "Be A Man", "Mr. Engineer", "See You At The Go Go", and "In Hollywood". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rare original Charger pressing – in nice shape! Back cover has a very small light stain near the bottom, but is great overall.)

Los YorksLos Yorks 68 ... LP
Mag/Munster (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
Rough-edged rock and roll from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – a set cut at a time when the scene was still very much in love with the R&B-influenced style of the UK beat groups, and less concerned with some of their later, more psychedelic directions! There's a nicely garagey quality to many of the tunes here – not just from the muddy drumbeats, fuzzy guitar, and bass – but also from the way that the lead vocals are recorded – often much louder than the instrumentation, blowing the sound way into the red. There's a few more psych-oriented moments – really just hints of what's to come, and less all-out jams – and titles include "Mira Tu", "Vallery", "Solo Pido Amor", "La Punta De Mi Lengua", "Charo", "Se Que No Cambiaras", "Abrazame Baby", and "Solo Estoy". Audrey MorrisAfterthoughts ... LP
Fancy Faire, 1985. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A later date from Audrey Morris – the Chicago singer who's probably best remembered for some classic RCA sessions in the 50s, but who also kept on doing her own thing for decades later in the Windy City! The set's got a very old school feel – quite different than the usual 80s jazz set – very much in classic small combo vocal mode, with Audrey's lead accompanied by piano from Bruce Robins, and some occasional tenor from Stu Genovese. And although the set was issued on a small label, it's got a very professional approach – almost an attempt to go for the classic sound that bigger labels were doing with small singer sessions a few decades before. The song choices are great, and titles include "Nobody", "I'm A Dreamer Aren't We All", "My Silent Love", "Mira", "Rain Sometimes", "But I Loved You", and "Afterthoughts". LP, Vinyl record album

Heady work from Chango – a 70s combo with a style that's right in keeping with the Chicano Rock scene in LA! The group mix together a swirling blend of guitars, organ, and percussion – clearly inspired by Santana, but with rootsier touches, and a bit more energy to groove openly. Most tracks have vocals, but the real strength of the set is the instrumentation – especially on the keyboards, which get pretty out there on some of the best cuts! Titles include the extended jammer "Chango", plus "Mira Pa Ca", "Bembe", "Solid Karma", "Fire Over Water", "Walk On Hell", and "Caminando". LP, Vinyl record album

No surprise, Alain Goraguer is part of the same generation, and did some great early jazzy backings for Serge – but here, his style is much funkier, with lots of sweet keyboard lines, wah wah guitar, and soaring larger orchestrations that really put the whole thing together – clearly one of Alain's best musical moments – and filled with great tunes that include "Le Bracelet", "Deshominisation", "Mort De Draag", "La Femme", "Mira Et Ten", and "Ten Et Medor". ✨✧ Jonas Kullhammar QuartetJonas Kullhammar Quartet Plays Loud For The People ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2003. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing set from one of the best young players on the Swedish jazz scene – tenor saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar, a player with boundless depth and imagination! The title of the set may be "plays loud for the people" – but we'd like to amend that to "plays proud for the people" – because Kullhammar's tone, timing, and sense of color are tremendous – extremely well-developed and mature, with a soulful intensity that takes us back to some of our favorite work by players that include Frank Foster and Benny Golson. Like Foster, Jonas often goes for a rhythmic approach to his tunes – blowing in a way that directs the overall sound of the set every bit as much as the bass and drums – and like Golson, he's got a raspy warmth in his tone that's beautifully human throughout. The group on the set is a quartet (mostly) – with Torbjorn Gulz on piano, and a great set of original tunes that include "Snake City East", "Slow Drop", "Miss Mira", "Behind Delight", "Peace 2003", and "Instant Soul". Vam (Mexico), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great mid 70s record by Antorcha – whose late 60s records as Las Antorchas were a great mix of styles – from beat, to garage, mod and psych – and by this point in the mid 70s, shortened their name and honed their groove into heavier, moodier style that's even better! Heavy rhythms and moody textures – with some really haunting organ grooves – and an overall vibe that's up there with some of greater underground rock around the world at the time. By this point, the band was producing and promoting themselves – and put up a number of EPs that are compiled here for this great 11 song set: with "En El Jardin Del Eden", the English-sung "Grass" and "Going Down", "La Tierra", "Crisalida", "Bracero", "Mira", Quiero Vivir" and more. The title here definitely gets it right – as Locobeach work in a trippy blend of old school cumbia modes – which is maybe no surprise for a group whose members also worked in Los Amigos Invisibles and Chicha Libre! The sound here mixes plenty of surf-styled guitar with percolating rhythms, strong keyboard lines, and even a bit of accordion – a leaner take on some of the Colombian styles of years back – and recorded with a definite ear for some of the more offbeat sides of the spectrum, especially on cuts that amp up the psychedelic production even more! ✨✧ Viejas Raices (Jorge Lopez Ruiz & Pocho Lapouble)Viejas Raices De Las Colonias del Rio De La Plata ... LP
Trova/Altercat (Germany), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest records we've ever heard from this legendary Argentine pianist – a set that has Jorge Lopez Ruiz playing lots of Fender Rhodes, and mixing it in with both rootsy Latin percussion and a number of other keyboards too! The set's almost a South American version of some of Herbie Hancock's work with the Headhunters – with more traditional percussion passages in the mix, but blended with sounds that include Arp and mini-moog too – which gives the whole thing a criss-crossing vibe that alternates from the surface of the planet to the deeper ranges of the cosmos! Ruiz is wonderful throughout – often very spacious, in a thoughtful way that only makes each note have more power – and titles include "La Hora De La Sed Maldita", "Eterna Prescencia", "Mira Tu", "El Viaje De Dumpty", "Balewada", and "Para Nostros Solamente". ✨✧ Sebastiao Tapajos/Maria Nazareth/Arnaldo HenriquesTAP ... LP
Trova (Argentina), 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A breezy bossa gem from the 70s – recorded in Buenos Aires, and done with a lightly grooving style that's a bit different than the usual bossa set! The style here is almost similar to the best work that Baden Powell did on the European scene at the time – particularly his tunes with vocalist Jeanine De Waleyne – as guitarist Sebastiao Tapajos is working here with singer Maria Nazareth in a groovy blend of guitar and voices that's totally great! Most tracks have Maria in the lead vocally, with Sebastiao or Arnaldo joining in on harmonies – making for a really full sound on the vocals, one that stands in nice contrast to the sparer bossa backing on bass and drums. The sound is totally great – mostly upbeat and lively all the way through, and filled with great bossa dancers that we'd rank with some of the best non-Brazilian work of the genre! Titles include "Samba Triste", "Vida Burguesa", "Tamborin De Plata", "Mira Maria", "Sambachiana", "Triangulo", "Samba De La Laguna", and "Para Decir Adios". LP, Vinyl record album

No Mirage here – as the album's got a presence that's impossible to deny – a solid, soulful uttering from this key Chicago combo of the 70s! The group's led by reedman Ari Brown – better known for his later avant work – and they've got a wicked blend of keyboards and horns with lots of complicated touches, played out over funky rhythms that are completely mindblowing! The great Ken Chaney plays keyboards, and in addition to Brown's reeds, the set also features trumpet from Frank Gordon, trombone from Steve Galloway, and bass from Rufus Reid – plus cool percussion from Arlington Davis and Drasheer Khalid. Most cuts are instrumental, and recorded beautifully – but one number, "The Ultimate Frontier", also features vocals from Anita Jefferies. Polydor/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $35.99 39.99
Man, these guys are really opening up their sound a lot with this release – moving into the heavier, harder rock territory that would bring them big fame in the 70s! The whole thing's a lot more tripped-out than before – none of the sweeter, lyrical modes of the group's earliest hits – and instead, a lot more moody numbers that really brood nicely on heavy basslines, fuzzy guitar, and some arch vocals sung in English throughout, despite the Dutch origins of the band. Why this one didn't rock the UK and US scenes bigger at the time is a mystery – but the record's ripe for rediscovery now, and filled with great cuts that include "The Truth About Arthur", "Who Cares", "Mr Fortune's Wife", "Must I Cry", "Magnificent Magistral", "I've Just Lost Somebody", "Sam & Sue", and "Crystal Heaven". Players aren't listed, but you can bet they're the usual high-level crop of jazzmen that Quincy would get for his mid 60s Mercury sides. Legendary work from Smokey Robinson and his wonderful group – a killer set from the second all-male version of The Miracles – recorded with some wonderfully soaring harmonies! The group's got a nice bite on the bottom here – a groove to go with the "go go" promised in the title – at a level that made these Miracles really take off on Motown dancefloors, yet still also have the late nite appeal of the earlier group too. A great one by The Miracles! Smokey and the group are clearly pushing the envelope here – stretching out for a deeper harmony sound, moving towards some of the smoother styles they'd use a bit more in the 70s. The result is a slightly-confused album, but one with some really interesting material that gives the group a chance to experiment more with their vocal phrasing. Includes the heavy soul number "Flower Girl", plus the tracks "Who's Gonna Take The Blame", "Darling Dear", "The Reel Of Time", "Wishful Thinking", "Point It Out", and "Don't Take It So Hard". Sopwith CamelMiraculous Hump Returns From The Moon ... LP
Reprise, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $49.99
A really wonderful little record – by a group who should have been much bigger than they were! Despite the fact that these guys are an obscure rock band with a silly name, the record's a perfect example of the subtly soulful work that was coming out of various west coast sources during the 70s – the kind of album-oriented work that yielded gems for play on underground FM radio, but which has been mostly lost to the shifting sands of time, save for some well-placed rescue in the reissue scene. The gem on this one is the smooth stepper "Fazon", but the album's got a few other nice ones too, with a jazzy tinge that's almost in debt to Mose Allison or Ben Sidran – that kind of cool blend of many elements with younger ideas that was bubbling up on the Bay Area scene. Jimmy WebbEl Mirage ... LP
Atlantic, 1977. Near Mint- ... $5.99
The songwriting of Jimmy Webb meets the studio genius of producer/arranger George Martin – for this one-off Atlantic album from 1977, a strange little set that almost has Jimmy sounding far older than his young years at the time! Martin's working in a style that follows nicely from Webb's earlier Land's End album – using full backings to color in the tunes with just the right shades and sounds to flesh them past Jimmy's vocals. But the unusual thing is the raspy, almost faltering quality of Jimmy's vocals – sung in a style that moves into his own words tentatively, as if he's rediscovering the lyrics after many years, or making them up on the spot. The mix of Webb's roughness and Martin's warmth makes the album more compelling than it might be otherwise – and titles include a version of Jimmy's classic "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress", plus "The Highwayman", "Christiaan No", "Moment In A Shadow", "Sugarbird", "Where The Universes Are", and "Mixed-Up Guy". ✨✧ MiraclesHi, We're The Miracles ... LP
Motown, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – a set that's not only one of the first great records on Motown, but a set that also really links the label to the vocal scene in the rest of the country too! Although the record features a few hits, the overall presentation is nicely free of the Motown mode that would later become quite standard – and many tracks have this very relaxed, unadorned approach that's a lot more like the group soul coming from small labels in New York, Philly, and Chicago! The group harmonize with even more soul and feeling than any of their Motown contemporaries – and the presence of Claudette Rogers gives the group a high tenor voice that really creates some amazing vocal interplay. The whole thing's stunning – a record that will really revise any simple thoughts you might have about Smokey and the group – and titles include "Shop Around", "Cause I Love You", "Don't Leave Me", "Your Love", "Depend On Me", and "Heart Like Mine". Pickwick, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Includes the heavy soul number "Flower Girl", plus the tracks "Who's Gonna Take The Blame", "Darling Dear", "Wishful Thinking", "Point It Out", and "Don't Take It So Hard". LP, Vinyl record album

During the late 50s – after an initial burst of recordings with Blue Note, and before a later successful run for the label – Art Blakey recorded on a number of labels with a lesser-known version of The Jazz Messengers. This album's from that stretch – and it's actually a pretty darn nice batch of tracks, even if it lacks some of the polished tightness of the later Blue Notes. The group features Bill Hardman on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, and Sam Dockery on piano – and the set's a loose batch of hardbop numbers like "Casino", "Ugh!", "Mirage", and "Reflections Of Buhania". Excellent compilation of the early solo tracks recorded by this beautiful vocalist from The Zombies. The tracks are culled from his first 3 records – One Year, Ennismore, and Journey – all of which are pretty darn tough to find on wax! If you don't know this stuff, it's some of the most godlike pop ever created in the world, and it mixes Colin's heavenly voice with swirling strings and haunting arrangements that are a perfect extension from the late Zombies material. A brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Ismael Miranda is standing proud at the start of the 80s with this great little set – bringing some new boldness into his work, and recording in the expanded salsa sound of Fania at the time! The record augments basic salsa backings with some larger orchestrations on a number of tunes – in a way that was being used with Willie Colon and others at the label – but instead of softening Miranda's sound, the approach seems to push him on a bit more – buoying his vocals up on a batch of well-penned arrangements from Luis Cruz, Luis Garcia, Ray Santos, Louie Ramirez, and others. Although Smokey and crew are pictured in the front in the usual staid Motown matching suits – their hipper garb on the back cover belies the nice direction they've taken with this album, which shows the band hitting a more heavy soul style that's touched by a lot of the grooviness going around at the time at Motown. Colin BlunstoneEnnismore ... LP
Epic, 1973. Near Mint- ... $19.99 24.99
The second solo album by ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone – filled with amazing tracks that are perfect for his godlike voice! The production's a bit fuller than the string-quartet/piano sound of One Year – but the musicians still include most of Colin's old buddies from the Zombies, and Chris White and Rod Argent produced the album as well – coming up with some great inflections that really send home the gentle hooks of the album's tunes! Blunstone's vocals are as magnificent as always – breathily beautiful without sounding cheesy – which is a very fine distinction here, and one that keeps the album far from other adult pop of the time. Tracks include "I Don't Believe In Miracles", "How Wrong Can One Man Be", "Andorra", "Time's Running Out", and "How Could We Dare To Be Wrong". LP, Vinyl record album

There's a nicely narrative photo on the cover, and Antoine Bourachot seems to follow up that inspiration with some cinematic-styled jazz funk throughout – on a record that's even got a set of song titles that conjure up an imagined story as well! A few tracks here have vocals that bring a nice current of soul to the music – fleshing things out with contributions on three different tracks from Jim Grandcamp, Giacomo Lecchi D'Alessandro, and Irfane – who each have their own soulful shapes next to the overall vibe of the music, which is nicely unified, and heavy on warm keyboards, guitar lines, and larger arrangements. Shoko Igarashi plays soprano sax and flute on the record – and titles include "Resolution", "Action", "Miracle", "Fortune", "Bullet", and "Serenade". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare Belgian avant jazz from the start of the 70s – and material that has the same sort of freewheeling, openly creative vibe of some of our favorite French work from the time! The style here isn't as sharp-edged as German work of the period – and has a creative warmth that's really great – swinging and rhythmic at most points, yet relatively open and very different than jazz of the decade before – with occasional vocals from a lovely female singer who has a breezy way of moving with the grooves, almost in a style that recalls Blossom Dearie, but in French – served up in a lineup that also includes some great Fender Rhodes, vibes, and guitar. The Powerlight is burning bright – Maurice White, Philip Bailey, and the rest of the group still very much in classic formation! Even on a post-70s set like this, Earth Wind & Fire still manage to come up with tracks that beat the rest of the ensemble funk groups that grew up in their wake – groovers that still set a new level for the boogie generation, and mellow tracks that cross over beautifully without ever getting to soppy or adult contemporary. The balance is a tricky one, but the group always manage to pull it off – and guide the whole presentation of work here with enough class and care to show that the whole thing's the result of genius planning, and not just some happy accident! Big Crown, 2023. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Leon Michels has given us plenty of hip hop-inspired funk over the years, but this might be his first real hip hop project overall – a stunning set that mixes the live instrumentation of El Michels Affair with rhymes from Black Thought of The Roots – all at a level that might well set a new standard for both styles of music! The grooves are great – that subtle sense of drama that Michels always brings to the music – informed by old school action scores, but with the lean energy of a funky 45 – and although Black Thought has had live backing before, the El Michels approach here really seems to unlock something different in his vocals – maybe more power and drama than we might have guessed. A really powerful project from the LA underground – served up by a group led by Jesse Sharps, who you may remember from classic albums on the Nimbus label – and done at a level that unites the sound of his generation with some of the best currents of more contemporary years! The lineup here is filled with righteous, spiritual giants – the great Dwight Trible on vocals, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Theo Saunders on piano, Robwerto Miranda on bass, Derf Recklaw on congas and percussion – alongside Mercedes Smith on alto, Amos Delone on baritone , and Maia on flute! There's a strong mix of message and music going on here – also delivered with a bit of poetry from Kamau Daaood – and although the set was recorded before the events of 2020, it's got a deep sense of power that really gets at the needs of America in the years after George Floyd. The set begins with a stunningly dark take on "Strange Fruit", then moves into Daaood's equally powerful "Healing Suite" – and soars next on the long "Freedom's Sweet" by Horace Tapscott, before closing with "Mother", a composition by the great Nate Morgan. There's plenty of drums and percussion on this sweet set of funky instrumentals – played both by Dan Hastie and Terin Ector, who also each handle bass, guitar, and keyboards too – an approach that makes for a very tight, wonderfully unified vibe on the set! The only other instrumentation is a bit of light strings added by Thomas Lea – who uses those elements in a great way, just to touch up the funky energy at the core – maybe inflecting things with a slight cinematic vibe, but never in a way that's overwhelming or too rich at all. The whole thing's nice and funky, yet also has a standout vibe from others in this Madlib sound library series – with titles that include "Mirage", "Timeless Tales", "Dorado", "Deep Waters", "Telescopics", "Better Days", "Blue Shade", "Vision", "When I Go", and "Streetwise". A lucky number 13 from Lee Hazlewood – one of the artist's last albums during his legendary LHI run of creativity – and a set that marks a really groovy step forward! The music here has all the wit and sharpness of Lee's better-known late 60s material, but there's also a bit of a groove too – some currents that were brought to the record by Larry Marks, then given a special Hazlewood touch when Lee's vocals were added – all in a way that almost makes for a soulful 70s update to his 60s sound! The set was only issued during Lee's time in Sweden during the early 70s – which makes it one of his rarest records ever – and titles include "You Look Like A Lady", "Tulsa Sunday", "Ten Or 11 Towns Ago", "And I Loved You Then", and "I Move Around". GEC/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 38.99 About June 7, 2024
The classic first LP by this stellar Chicago harmony group – and a monster! Heaven & Earth had a wonderful falsetto harmony sound that reminds us a lot of east coast winners like Blue Magic or The Stylistics – and like some of the best east coast groups, this group's vocals work equally well on slow ballads or faster uptempo numbers, both of which are handled extremely well on the record by producer Clarence Johnson. The bulk of the arrangements on the record were done by Tom Tom 84 – one of Chicago's true soul geniuses, and in perfect form on this record. The whole thing's amazingly well put together for an indie soul group album – and is a sure indication of the group's later fame on Mercury. Sweet early CTI work from trumpeter Freddie Hubbard – the kind of groundbreaking electric jazz that really helped him find a new space in the 70s! The album follows strongly from Freddie's classic Red Clay set for CTI – and like that one, it features extended tracks that build beautifully as they roll on – taking Freddie's airy trumpet as the base, and layering in electric piano, flute, guitar, and percussion – plus some wonderfully subtle strings – used sparely, but in just the right way to underscore the wider vision of the record. Arrangements are by the mighty Don Sebesky – and other players include George Benson on guitar, Hubert Laws on flute, Phil Kraus on vibes, and Airto on percussion – plus Richard Wyands on the keys, making a rare CTI appearance here. Titles include a surprisingly great version of "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" which has some great breaks in the middle – plus "First Light", "Moment To Moment", and "Yesterday's Dreams". Polydor/Lawson (Japan), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $44.99 54.99
One of the funkiest records ever from Akira Ishikawa and his Count Buffalos band – a hip little groover that stands head to head with some of the best funky jazz from the US and Europe of the time! Despite Akira's earthy look on the cover, the record's got a relatively electric feel overall – thanks to some sweet electric piano from Hiromasa Suzuki and organ from Norio Maeda – both of whom work together on most numbers, with a great sense of flow between the keyboards! The rhythms have some Latin and African percussion added on the bottom, which gives the grooves a nicely chunky feel – and some cuts have some sharp-edged tenor solos from Takeru Muraoka, who further deepens the soul of the set. The album's a really tremendous one through and through – as righteous as a lost American funky fusion set from the early 70s – and titles include "African Deer", "Sunrise", "Sandstorm", "Blue Soul", "Bakishinba", and "Mirage". Tiger Lily/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 26.98
An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) Apart from the amazing cut "Miracles", this one includes loads of gems like "Rockin' On My Porch", "Shake Her Loose", "(Why Can't We Be) More Than Just Friends", and "Boy, You're Dynamite"! SOUL, 1975. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Gladys Knight's last album for Motown subsidiary SOUL – a collection of work from a variety of different sessions, put together to compete with her shift to Buddah Records in the mid 70s! The set features a range of numbers, often in a mode that's a bit more uptempo and righteous than some of the mellower Gladys Knight work that was dominating her hits at the time – almost as if they'd been holding back on this stuff, to let her develop more of a southern soul ballad identity. Arrangements are by Paul Riser, David Van DePitte, and Robert White – and often show a bit of the growing 70s dancefloor sensibility creeping into Motown during the time. Gladys' vocals are still plenty real soul – soaring out over the tracks – and titles include "In The Middle Of The Road", "Come Together", "All I Need Is A Miracle", "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", and "Can You Give Me Love With A Guarantee". East West/Now Again, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 25.98
Possibly the greatest album ever from the enigmatic Lloyd Miller – his legendary Oriental Jazz album from the late 60s, and a really wonderful blend of musical modes! Some of the tracks here really stretch out in the Eastern promise of the title – mixing jazz rhythms with santur, oud, zarb, and other unusual instrumentation – all in ways that are modal one minute, meditative the next, and which even echo gamelan styles on one tune! Other tracks are a bit straighter in the instrumentation, but still sparkle with a globe's worth of influence – Lloyd on piano, carving out sounds in a very unusual way! Some tracks are by Miller's trio, other by a quartet that features him, but which is led by pianist/trombonist Press Keys. Titles include "Hue Wail", "Pentalogic", "Tanya", "Natanie", "Guzel Gozler", "Prelude In The Iranian Mode Shur", "Impression Of Bhairava Raga", and "Njonja Mirah & Yona". Some of these tracks have appeared on Millers Oriental Jazz CD compilation – but others haven't – and this is his reissue of the full original album! LP, Vinyl record album

MndsgnSnaxxx ... LP
Stones Throw, 2023. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Mndsgn adds an extra x to the title here, which might cause a bit of confusion with the previous Snaxx set – yet we can definitely say that he seems to have only deepened his groove since that record, opening the door for some soul-drenched elements that almost have us wishing someone would snatch him up, and have him work with some of the bigger-name soul singers of our generation! But as before, maybe it's the leanness that serves Mndsgn best – his way of finding a groove, snaking a bassline, gently nudging a keyboard, and all those understated elements that really do more with less – an approach that even extends to the vocals that visit some of the tracks on the set. Titles include "Luv Mirage", "Papercrane", "My Pleasure", "Fillsmeup", "Living Colours", "MakeU", "Finallyalone", and "Midnitesnaq". LP, Vinyl record album

Phil OchsPleasure Of The Harbor ... LP
A&M, 1967. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Was there a more tragic figure in the 60s scene than Phil Ochs? Perhaps, but this is still a wonderful piece of his odd and sad career, a great portrait with his unrelenting political stance still in place, though not as raw as some of his other LPs. More arranged than any of his other LPs, but not without spare moments, the orchestrations still never get in the way of Ochs' occasionally delicate voice or clutter the picture too much. Eight tunes: "Cross My Heart", "Flower Lady", "Outside Of A Small Circle Of Friends", "I've Had Her", "Miranda", "The Party", "Pleasures Of The Harbor" and "The Crucifixion". LP, Vinyl record album

Misha PanfilovAtlantico (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Miraaz (Estonia), 2023. New Copy ... $27.99 33.99
The music of Misha Panfilov just gets deeper and deeper with each new release – and here, he's light years away from the funk of his earlier sets, and much more in the realm of spiritual jazz! The set's got a vibe that's almost in the Carlos Nino side of the spectrum, but which also resonates strongly with Misha's amazing sense of sound – served up by a group that features Misha on guitars, keyboards, organs, harpsichord, ngoni, and a whole host of other elements – joined by the trumpet of Rafael Andrade, tenor of Francisco Aguilar, bass of Ricardo Dias, and drums of Francisco Coelho. Tunes are long and carry elements of Brazilian and other global styles – but often in a way that evokes cinematic modes too, although things are much deeper than any sort of easy soundtrack reference to such styles. The whole album's a masterpiece of beauty that we never would have expected from Panfilov a few years back – and titles include "Vertical", "Alegria Em Movimento", "Caleidoscpopio", "Domingo Magico" and "Para O Sol". Maria RaquelMucha Mujer (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Chulo/Daptone, 2023. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A contemporary record, but one that hearkens back to the glory days of the Latin diva albums of the 50s and 60s – wonderfully expressive vocals from Maria Raquel, a singer who makes her debut here, yet somehow feels as if she's been making music for many many years! The arrangements are a nicely updated version of past modes – percussion, strings, and reeds mixed with these beautifully dark-turning strings – arranged by Michael Eckroth of Orquesta Akokan, and with a modern depth that's really wonderful, and not just some sort of retro-styled approach. There's a subtle brilliance going on here that really holds us rapt – as Maria mixes boleros and cumbia numbers, on titles that include "Celos", "Juego De Dolor", "Mirame", "La Reina Del Baile", "Cumbia De La Gaita", "Ya No", "Convesion", and "Cumbia Del Presente". Ricardo RayOn The Scene With Ricardo Ray ... LP
Fonseca, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $59.99
Smoking early work from the team of Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz – the kind of record that marked the pair as one of the freshest new voices to hit Latin music in the New York scene of the 60s! The rhythms and modes are all familiar ones, but they're delivered with a different sort of edge here – partly because of Ricardo's heavy use of dark notes on the piano, but also because there's a nice sense of space in the arrangements that almost points the way towards some of the freer thinkers of the Latin Soul years. Bobby's vocals are well-placed, and very soulful – and Chivirico Davila and Felo Brito also sing a bit on the record too. Titles include an incredible mambo reworking of "Parisian Thoroughfare", done as a longer descarga number that's really great – and other tracks include "Chachita", "Mirame", and "Yenyere". (Small white label pressing with deep groove and orange Fonseca logo – nice and clean.)

Fool's Gold, 2013. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $44.99 49.99
El-P and Killer Mike finally deliver a killer duo record! We knew that this one would be a win, considering how great the El-P produced RAP Music album by Killer Mike turned out to be, how versatile the El-P futuristic production vibe is and how timelessly inventive each rapper is on their own. They didn't team-up to coast on their reputations, though, as Run The Jewels is nearly as great as anything either one has done in the preceding couple of years. Includes "Run The Jewels", "Banana Clipper" feat Big Boi, "DDFH, "Sea Legs", "No Come Down", "Get It", "Twin Hype Back" feat Prince Paul as his Handsome Boy alter-ego Chest Rockwell, "A Christmas F**king Miracle" and more. Arthur RussellPicture Of Bunny Rabbit ... LP
Audika, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
Never-issued material from the legendary Arthur Russell – a set of tracks that's maybe closest in spirit to his groundbreaking World Of Echo album – as it blends together voice, cello, effects, and plenty of the echo promised in the title – all with a style that's beyond easy description, and completely sublime throughout! This work captures Russell at his most creative – definitely more of an artists' musician than the sort who'd tried to crack more mainstream modes in his earlier years – almost set free to find that special voice that was always inside him, delivered in a style that's undeniably his, and years ahead of its time! And although we've loved some of the other issues of his lost material by Audika, this set may well be the best of the recent batch – with titles that include "The Boy With A Smile", "Fuzzbuster #6", "Not Checking Up", "Telling No One", "In The Light Of A Miracle", "Very Reason", and "Picture Of Bunny Rabbit". Adele SebastianDesert Fairy Princess (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Nimbus/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $40.99 44.99
One of our favorite records ever on the legendary Nimbus label – a special home to spiritual jazz on the west coast at the end of the 70s – and crucial for giving us some really unique talents like this! Adele Sebastian may have only ever cut this one album as a leader, but she's a hell of a flute player with a very deep, spiritual vibe – these sublime lines that soar and stretch out over modal rhythms – played by a totally hip group that includes Rickey Kelley on vibes, Roberto Miranda on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums and a bit of gembreh – a string instrument that brings a nicely exotic vibe to the record. The group's rounded out by Bobby West on piano and Daoude Woods on percussion – and the songs have this open flow that's wonderful – never too far out, but always searching – as the group soar through a version of McCoy Tyner's "Man From Tanganyika", plus the tracks "Desert Fairy Princess", "Belize", "Prayer For The People", and "Day Dreamer". A pop dancefloor classic – built around Shannon's killer club hit "Let The Music Play", as guilty a guilty pleasure as there ever was for us, and a tune that we can't help liking even today! Other tracks on the set have a similar punchy electro groove – lots of beats popping underneath, and sweetly soulful vocals from Shannon over the top. Motown/Elemental (Spain), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 32.99
One of the biggest charting LPs by The Supremes – and one of the best, too! The girls are opening it up a bit here – getting in on some of The Miracles Go Go action of the period, and laying down tunes that have a bit more of a northern groove to them – relying a bit more on a more steady overall groove than the hugely catchy choruses of some of their biggest hits. A groovy record – with a tight theme! Titles include "These Boots Are Made For Walking", "I Can't Help Myself", "Get Ready", "Money", "Hang On Sloopy", "Come & Get These Memories", "Shake Me, Wake Me", and "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart". Horace TapscottLive At Lobero Vol 1 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Nimbus/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $40.99 44.99
Really beautiful work from pianist Horace Tapscott – working here in a mode that crosses some of the freer inclinations of his solo sessions for the Nimbus label with some of the deeper spiritual currents of his large group recordings of the time! The group's just a trio – with Sonship on percussion and the mighty Roberto Miranda on bass – the last of whom does a really fantastic job of setting the tone, with this round, rich sound that really holds things together – even when Horace is getting a bit free on his solos! All tracks are nice and long, and thanks to Miranda, there's a nice sort of modal energy on the set – a balance between structure and freedom that's really wonderful, and which gets at the core of Tapscott's best achievements on record. The album features a great 21 minute reading of Tapscott's perennial favorite "The Dark Tree" – done with a great throbbing bassline – plus the tracks "Raisha's New Hip Dance" and "Sketches Of Drunken Mary". Trio ValoreReturn Of The Iron Monkey (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2008. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Slammin Hammond from Trio Valore – a really old school combo with a sweet mix of mod and funky rhythms! The group features heavy drums from Steve White – with a groove that stretches back to his many years on the hip side of the UK scene – and remaining trio members include Damon Minchella on guitar and Seamus Beaghen on Hammond – both players who more than keep up with White's hard-hitting approach, and really make the set cook up strongly throughout! A number of cuts are covers, but there's also some great originals too – and the whole thing has the feel of a hip 60s set in a small Soho club – but filtered through a generation that also understands funk as well. Titles include "Rehab", "Hola Muneca", "Fuoco", "Hip Hug Her", "Anxious Mo Fo", "All About My Girl", "Return Of The Iron Monkey", "Dam Square", and "Miracolo". LP, Vinyl record album

WhoTommy ... LP
Decca, 1970. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
An amazing moment from The Who – and from the UK rock scene in general – as Tommy is one of the most fully-conceived concept albums ever recorded – a masterful effort that's still pretty hard to match all these many years later! Pete Townshend really knocked it out of the park with this one – and pushed the group way way past the simpler songs the were recording just a year before – into this deeply introspective territory, spun out both in the album's words and music. The Tommy tale's been well told many times over the years – so we won't bother with the full narrative – but just let us say that it's hard to go wrong with this one, an essential item in any collection of adventurous rock – classic or otherwise. Titles include "The Acid Queen", "It's A Boy", "Sally Simpson", "Miracle Cure", "Pinball Wizard", "Do You Think It's Alright", "Cousin Kevin", "Christmas", "Tommy's Holiday Camp", "I'm Free", and "We're Not Gonna Take It". JJ Jackson/Linda JonesThis Is Loma Volume 7 (Great JJ Jackson/Hypnotized) ... LP
Loma/Warner (UK), Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A special version of this excellent series – with an album by each artist in the package! Side one features a killer album by the justly described Great JJ Jackson – and one that's been a darn tough one to find over the years! The leadoff cut is JJ's amazing single "But It's Alright", a slammin' soul track that always stops us dead whenever we hear it – which isn't often enough! The rest of the material is excellent too, and there are lots of nice tracks like "I Dig Girls", "Courage Ain't Strength", "Too Late", "Try Me", "Down But Not Out", Sho Nuff (Got A Good Thing Going", and "Four Walls". He's equally adept at uptempo soul and more ballad inflected tunes – great stuff all the way! Side two features Hypnotized by Linda Jones – one of the greatest female singers on the east coast scene at the end of the 60s – heard here on a classic Warner Brothers set that includes some of her best-remembered tracks! At some level, the set's a prequel to Linda's later recordings for the Stang/All Platinum label – as it features production and arrangements by the great George Kerr – who really has a way with slow-moving soul tunes, and the kind of sad-tinged tracks that Jones always did so well! Plus, his raw production really brings out some of the deeper soul qualities in Linda's voice – a mode that's quite a surprise at times, and presented here in a way that's far beyond any of the Aretha Franklin-styled cliches of other singers. Jones is a tremendously unique talent in female soul, and this album's her lasting legacy – a true treasure with cuts that include the hit "Hypnotized", plus loads of other nice ones like "Last Minute Miracle", "Give My Love A Try", "You Can't Take It", "What've I Done", and "I Can't Stand It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 70s issue. Cover has unglued seams and is bent just a bit at the top seam.)
