A great compilation of tracks by Roy Ayers – one that feels quite different than some of his other collections, as it goes past the hits to show a warm and uniquely mellow side of his career! The 18 track package is drawn from some of his best work on Polydor during the 70s – and instead of uptempo club tracks, or Roy's few famous hits, it goes for laidback numbers that offer a strong focus on his mellow vibes and wonderful production styles. The set grooves along with some of our favorite lesser-known tracks by Roy – occasionally stepping into a hit, but mostly sticking to obscurer album cuts, and a few favorites that have grown in fame over the years, thanks to the sample crowd. Sergio Mendes is definitely a swinger – especially on this jazz-based session that was recorded before his famous work with Brasil 66! This album was recorded in New York, at a time when Mendes was one of the hottest things brewing in the bossa scene in Brazil – and apart from the great Antonio Carlos Jobim on guitar, many of the other players are American jazz musicians – including Art Farmer on flugelhorn, Phil Woods on alto sax, and Hubert Laws on flute – all adding in some nice jazzy elements to the tunes! The music is all instrumental, and a great mix of jazz and bossa that really lets you hear the young Sergio's skills on piano. A really fantastic album from the great Akiko Yano – a set recorded in London with help from a whole host of great talents, all of whom make for a record that's even catchier and groovier than some of her work in Japan! Ryuichi Sakamoto co-produced and arranged the record, and really helped give a lot of Akiko's songs a wonderful sense of structure – qualities that are expanded by work from Mick Karn on bass, Steve Jansen on drums, and Sakamoto on keyboards – working with Yano on a mix of English and Japanese-language tunes. Steve Nye also provides studio help, furthering some of the Brit pop elements – and David Sylvian also guests on one tune – the great "Good Night", done as a duet with Akiko. Antonio Carlos Jobim's classic Verve session from 1963 – a tremendous record, done with a wonderful airy sound that became the trademark for bossa production in America – and which also had a great inspiration on the sound of mid 60s bossa in Brazil! Claus Ogerman arranged and conducts the orchestra, and Jobim plays guitar and piano – with a core group that also features Jimmy Cleveland on trombone and Leo Wright on flute, both American jazz players who help add some further complexities to the sound. The set's not nearly as pop-oriented as some of Sakamoto's other work from the time – mostly instrumental, and with a spirit that's like some of his best soundtrack material, and maybe a bit like some of the other minimalist work coming from Japan during the period – save for the fact that Sakamoto always brings in a bit more, and has some unusual sonic elements that lurk in the background and make for a nice amount of surprises! A beautifully baroque batch of tracks, written and arranged for the Electric Prunes by the great David Axelrod – a really groundbreaking mix of modes that had quite an impact back in the late 60s! The record shows Axelrod's perpetual fascination with the spiritual – mixed with that great modern style of funk that he was forging at Capitol during the late 60s. The record's not really preachy, nor is it proggy. It's more of a complex blueprint of rock, jazz, funk, and touches of soul – all hung together on the same sort of "mass" structure that Axelrod would later use with Cannonball and on his own. A blistering album from Belgian/Congolese rapper Baloji – music related to his directorial debut in the film Augure, and delivered with even more punch than some of his previous albums! Baloji got his start in the group Starflam, but has really grown strongly as a solo artist – pushing the boundaries of the hip hop elements that informed his roots, and fusing them with Conglese elements in a very strong way – so that the energy on the record really matches the vivid images in the film! One of the many things we love about keyboardist Greg Foat is that he's never willing to sit still – that he's always on the move into some new dimension of his music – so much so that it's very difficult to ever compare one of his records with another! This set's got a very keyboard-heavy approach – recorded with just drums from Morgan Simpson of Black Midi – and a style that's like some of the best tracks from that moment when the sound library scene went more electric at the end of the 70s – although in a way that still stretches out with the enigmatic depths of some of Foat's more ambitious projects! The core group on the album is the Tone Jansa Quartet – led by European reedman Jansa, and working in a space that's quite similar to that of Shaw's backing groups on previous sessions – strong modal currents in the rhythms, and with Tone's work on soprano, tenor, and flute turning out to be a great partner for Woody's trumpet! Jansa wrote all the tunes on the set, and gave them a soaring feel that we really love – just the right mix of introspection and exploration found on classic Shaw sessions like Little Red's Fantasy or Lovedance. Fabiano Do Nascimento picks up his groove here, but just slightly – adding in some slight percussion and gentle rhythms to his fantastic work on 7 string and 10 string guitar! The record's got all the lightness and charms of his previous sets, but also maybe has just a slightly larger rhythmic pulse – sometimes through added guitar from Daniel Santiago, who also brings a bit of midi to the mix – yet never in a way that overshadows the acoustic guitar at the core! Some of the lushest, most melodic material from Four Tet yet – straight up beautiful for the most part – and a pretty strong contender for his best to date! He's blending electronics and more natural sounds in ways that aren't out of character given his past work, but the title is wholly appropriate. Up to this point, he's so fully embraced creative evolution, it's gratifying to hear a Four Tet record in which he brings in bits of the styles he's worked on past efforts with a new energy and fresh life. It'll roll from almost beatless mixes of electronic atmosphere and natural sounds on one track, to beats-centric and spacey on the next, but it gels all the way through, all parts of a hypnotic whole. Spare, minimal sounds served up on a contemporary recording – but one that's inspired by early Midi references from the 80s – which are used here to set the pacing, but warmed up a lot more than they might have sounded back in the day! The music has a rhythmic, almost organic pulse – as if Terry Riley were composing on a Commodore 64, yet already was able to unlock all these tones and elements that none of the 80s musicians handling the instrument were able to touch – informed more by the sounds of acoustic instruments and their possibilities, then woven through digital progressions – all with a sound that's a bit like some of the Sky Records material by Cluster and Eno too. That's Carl Saunders, not Colonel Sanders – and he's one heck of a great trumpeter, more than strong enough to carry off a live quartet date like this! The album has Saunders on both trumpet and flugelhorn – working with piano, bass, and drums in a set of extended tracks with plenty of room for solos. Carl's a player that we'd missed until this Sinatra Society set caught our eye, and although contemporary, the album's got a classic feel that reminds us a bit of an Art Farmer record from a few decades back – and Saunders has more than enough imagination to carry off his solos with the sort of reference that might imply. He also happens to be a good writer too – and 7 of the album's 10 tracks are originals – with titles that include "Happy Go Lucky", "Can You Dig Being Dug", "Calming Notion", "Midi Evil Blues", "Blues On The Side", and "The Girl From Cancun". Rare early solo material from Dutch jazz rock guitar eclecticist/genius Jan Akkerman – a late 60s album released in the Netherlands on Imperial after Akkerman's time in The Hunters and before his work with Brainbox and Focus! It's an early indication of his far reaching tastes and talent – playing in trio format for the most part, with couple bluesy psych jazz gems composed by Jan plus takes on diverse bag of covers including "Bag's Groove", "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", "Ode To Billy Joe" and "Green Onions".
