RTJ come on with the force of a hurricane on the very first track – and don't let up throughout the course of this completely sharp 4th LP – a record that may owe plenty to the spirit of 2020, even if just as an antidote to what ails us! A heavenly set of funky tracks from the indie scene of the 70s – titles that were all recorded as singles for the gospel market, but which have a fair bit of funk in the rhythms! These tunes all have massive appeal well beyond their spiritual message – heavy drums, amazing basslines, and nicely gritty instrumentation that sets these cuts up right next to funky 45 treasures from the mid 70s – but which also gives them a slightly different feel, too – thanks to some uplifting messages in the lyrics, which also means that the vocal styles are nicely changed up from more standard funk-based lyrics! A massive double-length set from Flower Travelin Band, and one that really marks their growth over the previous records – as the combo serve up a mix of live and studio tracks that easily demonstrate just why they were such an important force on the Japanese scene at the time! There's a fierceness and focus here that maybe tops even the previous records – and a quality that easily matches some of the most sinister sounds from the hard rock scenes elsewhere, particularly the UK – maybe in part because the group use English language vocals, which really helps break them out with wider appeal overall. An amazing book – a true treasure for any fan of rare jazz albums! The book offers up way more than you'd guess from its title – because the array of material here is really fantastic – vintage jazz album covers of a very wide range, and not just the usual classics you might find in other books of this nature! The authors have really done their homework with the book – and the covers include lots of obscurities, overseas albums, and vintage American records in beautiful shape – each supported with notes on the original release, and packaged with some interviews with famous jazz collectors and producers as well – plus Top 10 record listings from Gilles Peterson, Kyoto Jazz Massive, King Britt, and many others. The images are all full color – many taking up a full page, others arrayed in really bold and dynamic ways – and the whole book has the same visual appeal we find in collecting rare records. The set was a massive breakthrough for August Darnell – one of his biggest hits since his day with Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, with an equally appealing approach to the dancefloor. Tracks mix early 80s New York club styles with Darnell's mad retro/exotic take on the world – coming out with a sound that's slightly hokey, but equally catchy! An unlikely contender to the throne of king of electro, this early 80s effort from Eddie Grant helps to prop him up there quite nicely. Heavy synth driven grooves bubble along nicely with that crisp Linn Drum sound, and though this album benefited from some wider pop appeal, there's more than a bit of Eddie's reggae side showing through too! Get ready to have your mind completely blown – because this compilation is one of those completely rare ear-opening experiences that will let you know that there's a hell of a lot of music in the world that you've never heard before – even if, like us, you've heard plenty of funky music over the years! The grooves here definitely live up to the title – as they're completely funky throughout, and in ways that are plenty appealing to fans of Anglo funk, but which have all the Mideast touches you'd expect in the instrumentation – a mad mix of east and west, sacred and secular, with the kind of completely unique vibe that will grab you like the first time you heard Ethiopian soul or Turkish rock! Back in the 20th Century, Ed asked us to move his records from our Brazilian section to Neo Soul – a move that was wise on his part, as Motta has become a soulful giant with really international appeal – a true global underground superstar, and a music maker that no home should be without! Motta's songwriting, production, and overall presentation is amazing – and he's moved far past the 70s heroes that first inspired him – including his uncle Tim Maia – to a point where a set like this is fantastic from start to finish, with a richness that belies all the focus and concentration that Ed brings to his work. A really unique take on the familiar territory of the funky soul compilation – a set that seems to dig up music that's a genre all unto itself – with very little ties to the popular modes in the mainstream at the time!
