A searing live set from the legendary NRG Ensemble – a key bridge between Chicago avant generations in the 80s, still going very strong in the 90s in this stunning concert recorded in Utrecht! There's a lot of twin-reed frenzy in the music – leader Mars Williams and Ken Vandermark – relatively new to Chicago, but already making his mark – and a fierce frontline force, next to Steve Hunt on drums, Kent Kessler on bass, and Brian Sandstrong on bass, guitar, and trumpet! Mars also plays some toys along the way – and amidst the intensity, there's also some great breaks for more tuneful moments – on titles that include "Hold That Thought", "Pet Peeve", "Straight Time", "Wire Money", "In The Middle Of Pennsylvania", and "Cut Flowers". Pianist Caili O'Doherty has a great sort of shimmer to her tone – a sense of swing that's familiar, but nicely personal as well – a bit hard to describe in words, but a charm that grabs you instantly from the very first note! Her look on the cover, and the somewhat dated title reference might get in the way of the contents of the record – which are rock-solid, and a great statement from this young artist who's really found a way to leave her mark on the piano trio format – proof that with the right player, the trio still has a long way to go! Tamir Shmerling plays bass, Cory Cox handles drums, and Nicole Glover blows a bit of tenor and soprano sax on a few tracks – titles that include a great remake of the well-chosen Duke Pearson number "You Know I Care", plus the originals "Salt & Vinegar", "Runaway", "Mr O", "Al", "Quarantine Dream", and "Reach Within". A sharp little record that's as well put-together as its 70s cover – served up by a group who certainly have some of the rootsy modes you'd guess from their name, but honed into a sharper studio sound, thanks to production help from Terry Melcher and Mark Lindsay! The record's one of those real 70s mysteries – a set that got plenty of care from the label, and which is filled with catchy tunes that could have crossed over big on AM radio – but which were maybe lost in the shuffle, while the promotion team behind the record were sneaking into some Sunset Strip lounge for mid-afternoon cocktails. Melcher and Lindsay also apparently appear on the record – and titles include "One More Round", "Piece Of My Life", "Together Now", "Tracy", "Ain't It Sad", "Whatcha Treatin Me So Bad For", and "Love You Tonight". A record with a very careful approach to sound – very slow-building work on soprano sax from Evan Parker, matched with equally thoughtful electronics from Matthew Wright – both players coming together in one of the most subtle executions of this mode we've ever heard! And that quality is only heightened by the fact that the group's a quartet – Peter Evans on trumpet and piccolo trumpet, and Mark Naussef on percussion – players who share the sensitivity of the dual leaders, as they build things up over long improvisations that really showcase that thoughtful sonic sensitivity that's always made Parker such a distinct reedman on the European scene. The whole thing is definitely a free jazz expression of electro/acoustic ideals first forged in the middle of the 20th Century – and titles include "At Altitude", "Drawing Breath", and "Engaged In Seeking". Rare soundtrack material from Waldemar Parzynski – maybe best known as the music director for the groundbreaking vocal group Novi Singers, but even more stunning here in an instrumental setting for an obscure documentary! The tracks are all very long – more musical suites than shorter cues for a film – and the album's awash in amazing sounds that range from modern orchestrations to unusual keyboard passages, and even some funky fusion touches too – all done in these great ways that shift effortlessly over the course of the extended tunes on the set – one of which stretches out well past the 20 minute mark! Titles include "Huta Katowice", "Wszystkie Moje Dzieci", and "Do Dnia". CD

The second album from The Paupers – a mix of searing guitar jams, more easygoing psychedelic pop bigger arrangements, even a little bit of a comic take on Byrdsy country rock– making for a pretty wild mix of sounds, but done with a focus on melodies and catchy grooves. The group is really stretching out and trying a lot of things on this second album, throwing caution into the wind as far as stylistic divergence goes, more often than not hitting the mark! Titles include "South Down Road", "Cairo Hotel", "Can't Go On", "Another Man's Hair On My Razor", "Ask Her Again" and more, plus the bonus tracks "If I Call You By Some Name", "Copper Penny" and "White Song". Ivo Perelman's got a mighty great group here – a quartet with Matthew Shipp on piano, Mark Helias on bass, and Tom Rainey on drums – all of whom really set fire to the music! Ivo's still got that sense of careful tones and textures that you'll know from other records – but at times, things really take off with some bolder, quicker, freer passages that really make for a great contrast – like the whole band's been shaken up like a can of soda, then cracked open with a really bold sort of sonic spray! The balance between careful contemplation and full-on frenzy is great – and titles include "Entrainment", "Life Force", "Water Music", "Fluidity", "Flow", and "Boundless". CD

A pair of very obscure Lee Perry recordings – back to back in a single CD set! Black Ark In Dub features a host of recordings done by Lee Perry right before his Pipecock Jackson implosion in the late 70s – but presented by former partner Pauline Morrison, who deserves a lot of credit for putting together a host of great dub tracks that might have been lost otherwise! The record first surfaced in the UK around 1980, with the usual very spare set of packaging that seems to mark some of the best dub records from the time – so there's little in the way of actual details about the recordings, but the quality of the bassy, echoey tracks definitely resonates with the strengths of the Black Ark studios at their height Titles include "Cool Rockers", "Jah", "Rasta Man", "Camp", "Dreadlock", "Guidance", "In The Valley", and "Money". Black Ark Vol 2 is a bit different – more of a various artists collection, put together by Pauline Morrison, with material rescued from the Black Ark studios before their implosion – all mixed by Lee Perry with his amazing mid 70s ear for sound – which makes for timeless magic on cuts that include "Ethiopia" by Carol Cole, "Give Praises" by The Silvertones, "How Deep Is Your Love" by The Inamans, "Got To Be Irie" by The Originals, "I Am I Said" by Bunny Rugs, "Jah Love Is Sweeter" by Lacksley Castell, and "Mumbling & Grumbling" by Junior Byles. A wild set of early 70s leftfield folk from Caroline Peyton – a freewheeling batch of tunes that's a little bit more out there than the warmer, sunshine folk soul of the later Intuition album – but a unique gem that's a great showcase for Caroline's stunning voice, and the songwriting of partner Mark Bingham. The duo's creative origins trace back to a hippie commune outside of Bloomington, Indiana – and the tunes often feel like an unselfconscious, artier riff on the Cali folk scene of the time. The arrangements are built around the voice, and piano on many of the tracks. Unconventional, but warm and true – well worth a late discovery. Original album tracks include "The Sky In Japan Is Always Close To You", "Pull", "Don Beggs", "Tuna", "Engram", "Sweet Misery", "Hook", "Gone For A Day" and more. The one and only album that Sun Ra ever cut for the Savoy label – a beautifully understated session that mixes more conventional jazz with some particularly Ra-like touches! The group on the set is extremely tight – especially the horn work of John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, and Pat Patrick – who glide together along with some of the best mainstream modernists of the 50s, but break out with earthier tones and phrases that clearly mark their playing as different from the norm. Ra plays relatively straight piano for the album, but there's more than enough Arkestra touches from other players on bells and assorted percussion – emphasizing the rhythmic qualities of the tunes, and really living up to the promise of titles that include "Bassism", "China Gates", "Of Sounds And Something Else", "Tapestry From An Asteroid", "Jet Flight", "Space Jazz Reverie", and "Where Is Tomorrow?". CD

Dave Scott has a wonderfully sensitive sound here – a quality that almost reflects the image on the front, which seems to have him listening to the trumpet he holds in his hands – a photo that really gets at the special sort of ear that Scott has for crafting these beautiful tones on his instrument! The music isn't familiar hardbop, even though the lineup might make you think that – but it's also not free jazz either – as Scott instead has this way of composing original material that's as much about the texture of the tunes as it is the individual voices, at a level that sounds especially strong as his instrument is matched with the tenor of Rich Perry and piano of Gary Versace – the latter of whom has a wonderfully diverse set of styles here. Other group members include Johannes Weidenmuller on bass and Mark Ferber on drums – and tunes, as mentioned, are all originals – with titles that include "KC Swingin", "Ralph Retired", "Song For Alice", "Indifference", and "Venus At Dusk". Really great work from Japanese bassist Isao Suzuki – a live performance recorded right at the same time as his groundbreaking albums for the Three Blind Mice label – and maybe even more compelling than some of that work! Suzuki, like Ron Carter and a few other key contemporaries, is way more than a standard bassist when he works as a leader – and here, he opens up the songs and the structure of the record in all these really great modes – creating a sense of soulful variety that really keeps things interesting throughout! Tracks are nice and long – and feature Suzuki on bass, cello, and electric piano – plus Kazumi Watanabe on guitar, Shinji Mori on drums, Osamu Kawakami on second bass, and Kenji Mori on alto, bass clarinet, and flute. Singer Mark Nakamoto delivers great vocals on the tracks "LA Breakdown" (billed incorrectly here) and "Bird Of Beauty" – and other tracks include very long takes on "Orang-Utan" and "Blue Road". CD

Few folks get a classic groove as right as T-Groove – and here, he's working with the George Kano Experience for an even more classic vibe – this wonderful blend of soul, jazz, funk, and boogie – all put together with the best sort of 80s groove production! The album's got a wonderfully understated vibe – so much so, the whole thing almost feels like the kind of lost major label production from back in the day – the sort of the set that was cut with top-shelf talents in the studio, then under-promoted by the record company – only to be discovered years later by rare groove hounds like us! Yet it's contemporary, and hopefully will get the attention it deserves – overflowing with great tracks that include a clubby remake of Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island", topped with the lyrics penned by Mark Murphy in the 70s – plus tracks that include "Shallow Naked Love", "Timeless Groove", "Haven", "Do It Baby", and "Secret Lover". CD

A pair of records from Tempest – a group formed by drummer Jon Hiseman after the breakup of Colosseum! First up is the self-titled Tempest record – music by a hell of a group from the glory days of the Bronze Records scene – a group who boast some fantastic guitar work from a young Allan Holdsworth that are more than enough to get them on the label – but who also have a richness and complexity that rivals some of the hippest prog acts on labels like Vertigo or Harvest too! Ex-Colosseum member Jon Hiseman handles drums and percussion with a mighty nice edge, Mark Clarke delivers some heavy sinister basslines, and Paul Williams echoes all of those strengths with his dark-tinged vocals – in a mode that's nicely beyond some of the cliches that other groups might hit on a record like this. Titles include "Gorgon", "Brothers", "Foyers Of Fun", "Upon Tomorrow", "Grey & Black", "Up & On", and "Dark House". Next up is Living In Fear – a really great record from Tempest – a group who have so many different things going on at once – guitars that would be right at home on a hard rock effort, rhythmic complexity that verges on prog, and a tunefulness that really sends the whole thing over the top with an unexpected appeal that keeps on going throughout the entire set! Maybe the tipoff is the group's great cover of "Paperback Writer" – showing a love of the harmony in earlier work by The Beatles – updated here to a more guitar-based, fuzz-heavy style for the 70s – and matched with some equally groovy songs that have us wondering why these guys never found more of a following at the time! One of the most amazing jazz vocalists of our generation returns here with an incredible group – a majestic combo to match all the spiritual inclinations in his music – with work from Kamasi Washington on tenor, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and both Carlos Nino and Derf Reklaw on percussion! Dwight Trible on his own is already more than enough to get us to run out and buy a record – but here, the combination of his unique voice with these musicians makes for an album that's an instant masterpiece – and one that even has lots of new colors and styles compared to some of Dwight's previous work! Songs include numbers by older west coast spiritual jazz heavyweights – like Horace Tapscott, Linda Hill, Nate Morgan, James Leary, and Jesse Sharps – mixed with some of Trible's own songs, and versions of work by Carmen Lundy, Oscar Brown Jr, and Donny Hathaway. Two great 90s sessions from Cedar Walton – back to back in a single set! Composer is a record that not only shows off the great skills of pianist Cedar Walton as a composer, but one that also shows how he can really work a special sort of magic when he lets some horns into his group, and shifts from his usual mode in a trio! Walton's always wonderful on the keys – and works here with Christian McBride on bass and Victor Lewis on drums – but it's the presence of the hornmen on the record who really shade things wonderfully – the presence of Vincent Herring on alto, Ralph Moore on tenor, and Roy Hargrove on trumpet – all really bringing out some great qualities in Walton's original tunes. Titles include "Martha's Prize", "Minor Controversy", "Hindsight", "Groove Passage", "Theme For Jobim", and "Groundwork". Roots is a masterpiece of color from pianist Cedar Walton – a set that has all the right elements and instruments really opening up his sound! The core trio is excellent – Cedar on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and the great Lewis Nash on drums – at his crackling 90s best – yet these players are expanded in all these great tonal ways – with rich tenor from Joshua Redman, sparkling trumpet from Terence Blanchard, and great guitar from Mark Whitfield – who really seems to echo Cedar's sense of color on his strings. An incredible run of music from Dionne Warwick – and a set of work that's very different than the Burt Bacharach material from the 60s, which his how most people know Dionne! These tracks are nicely different, and mark Warwick as a hell of a soul singer in the best 70s tradition – stepping into some great new territory at Warner Brothers, in a way that opens up her sound, makes her sound more mature, and really pushes past some of the Bacharach territory – great in its time, but getting a bit stale until Dionne changed things up with these tracks! Bacharach is still part of the proceedings at times, but comes across in a nicely different way – and Dionne also works with legendary soul producers, including Thom Bell and Holland-Dozier-Holland – both studio forces who really change things up. The set features all the full albums, plus lots of bonus tracks too – a massive 86 tracks, with albums that include Dionne, Just Being Myself, You Are A Song (73/74 Sessions), Then Came You, Track Of The Cat, and Love At First Sight – plus bonus tracks too! Capitol greatness from Nancy Wilson – a pair of excellent albums locked together on one CD! This Mother's Daughter is one of Nancy Wilson's hippest albums from the 70s – a great record of smooth mellow tracks produced by Eugene McDaniels, handled with some nice jazzy flourishes, and a warm soulful sound that brings out the best in Nancy's vocals! If you've dug her vocals on the Life, Love, & Harmony album, you'll find that this one's pretty similar – with some great easily grooving tunes that well mark her move into modern soul – and a sophistication that goes way beyond her work of the 60s! Titles include "China", "I Don't Want A Sometimes Man", "From You To Me To You", "Stay Tuned", "When We Were One", and "Now". On I've Never Been To Me, Nancy Wilson hits hard on two different levels – some of the mellow, sophisticated numbers that made her mid 70s years so great – and a few more upbeat groovers that aim strongly for the clubs! The blend is carried off well here – thanks to production and arrangements from Gene Page and Garry Sherman – both of whom avoid any too-commercial modes and really help keep the album at a level that works perfect for Wilson's huge legacy in soul music! It's easy to wake up with grooves this great – a searing back of 70s Afro Rock gems that are also surprisingly funky, too! The tunes here do a wonderful job of mixing psych currents and headier rhythms – a great blend of the burning Afro Funk trends that were happening in Nigeria at the time, but with much richer, trippier work on the guitar and vocals – and some of the freaky, fuzzy basslines too! If some Afro Funk acts drew strong influence from the sharp soul of James Brown, these groups all seem to drink deep from the same musical well as Funkadelic at their freaked-out early best – which means that they've got no trouble throwing in a psych guitar riff alongside soulful vocals and funky rhythms – all with a sound that's completely sublime. A wonderful collection of obscure solo acoustic guitar tunes from the mid 60s up to the dawn of the 80s – beautiful work from a slew of players we've never heard of – but we'd put right up there with Fahey and Basho in the way they reach from the back porch to the cosmos with just their fingers and some strings! One thing we love about this set, and the Numero Group releases to date, is how deep they dig and what beauty they unearth, somehow with impeccable sound quality. Some tunes are starkly beautiful, some chime on fairly intently, some do both those things and more – and it's very heartening and instantly appealing stuff – wordless tunes that carry a lot of sensitivity and emotion! Rare tracks from the Daszu project of composer/artist Mark Rudolph – music initially recorded in Wisconsin, without much exposure at the time – but with a vibe that's much more in keeping with the darker reaches of the UK post-punk scene! Instrumentation is relatively spare and hypnotic – bass, keyboards, phasing guitar, and muted drums – used in ways that initially echo some of the Rough Trade or Factory Records groups, but which also then gets a bit more creative as the music goes on – especially on the last third of tracks, which Rudolph recorded in Australia. This CD marks the first proper release of this material away from the cassette generation – and titles include "Dina Tina", "Kyrstalene Voga", "La Plus Belle", "Love/Obsession", "Cynthia", "Suppressed Malice", "Phrenesis", "Beta Diminished", "Declaration", and "Pink Haze". Almost from the start of his career, tenorist Johnny Griffin was heading overseas, delivering searing live performances like this – working as a solo horn player with a pickup group, at a level that was often even more powerful than some of his studio work back home! And here, the combo is hardly just a pickup group – as British modernist Stan Tracey is on piano, working alongside frequent musical partners Malcolm Cecil on bass and Jackie Dougan on drums – a great engine to drive the tenor of Griffin on to new heights – as Johnny blows here with a really raw edge that's amazing, and non-stop imagination that makes for very powerful solos that never seem to let up at all! The set features a smoking 22 minute take on "Indiana", plus long takes on "Blues In Twos" and "The Girl Next Door", both around the 15 minute mark – which means that Tracey also gets in plenty of solo space too. CD

Keyon Harrold continues his rise from standard jazz into the realm of soulful superstar – working here with a great array of guests, and also creating a sound that's a fantastic blend of his own work on trumpet and some larger currents of soul and R&B! At some level, the record's almost Harrold's equivalent of the Black Radio projects from pianist Robert Glasper – and maybe no surprise, Glasper's in the lineup of guests here – alongside Laura Mvula, PJ Morton, Common, Jean Baylor, and others – all participants who find just the right spot in the music, yet leave plenty of room for Keyon to blow some solos in a way that mark his role as the visionary leader of the proceedings. Titles include "Beautiful Day", "Well Walk Now", "Don't Lie", "Foreverland", "Find Your Peace", "Gotta Go", "Pictures", and "The Intellectual". CD

A great little record from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a set that not only shows the great blend of acoustic and electric styles that was happening at the time, but which also really illustrates the inventive approach of the Three Blind Mice label at their best! The vibe here is very different than the usual Japanese fusion album of the time – a bit more relaxed and open-ended, and really free to play around with different rhythms and tonal changes – yet all while still moving forward, and avoiding some of the proggy, jamming modes of the European scene. Tracks all push past the ten minute mark – and in addition to both piano and electric piano from Masaru Imada, the set also features guitar from Kazumi Watanabi, bass from Osoo Fukui, drums from Tetsujiro Obara, and percussion from Yuji Imamura. Titles include "A Green Caterpillar", "Straight Flash", "Blue Impulse", and "Spanish Flower". CD

A great tenor saxophonist from the Japanese scene of the 70s – heard here in one of his hippest settings ever! Seiichi Nakamura really knows how to stretch things out, yet still keep things interesting – working here with a strong sense of rhythm that's really augmented by the use of guitar in the group alongside piano, bass, and drums – and instrument handled by Kiyoshi Sugimoto with these wide flares that roll along beautifully and give the rhythm a strong sense of color – while Nakamura blows these brilliantly bold lines over the top! Most tracks push past the ten minute mark, and more are very creative originals by Nakamura too – with titles that include "Himalayas", "Adventure In My Dream", and "Too Beauty". CD

One long piece, played with searing intensity by the trio of Cene Resnik on tenor, Giorgio Pacorig on piano, and Mark Lasic on drums – joined here by Rob Mazurek on some great pocket trumpet too! The piece builds with this resonant interplay between all four forces in the quartet – and Mazurek sometimes steps back, to wait for his space, then provides just the right punctuation – in a manner that really reminds us of the way that he can be an improviser who's patient, but powerful too! CD

Improvisations between two very playful artists here – each of whom do a great job of balancing between their core instruments and sounds from some other slight sources as well! Mars Williams handles saxes, and Vasco Trilla plays drums – but the latter opens up all these other percussion instruments too, while Williams uses toy instruments in very inventive ways – all with results that make the record very different than just a standard set of improvisations between drums and saxes! There's a sonic quality to the record that's very much its own – as you'll hear on long tracks that include "Fogo", "The Tongue Set Free", "Thin Air", "Critical Mass", and "The Shaking Hand That Leaves A Mark". CD

One of the deepest entries in this long-running series – and like some of the other recent volumes, a package that goes way farther than some of the earlier compilations! The music here is not straight disco or funk – and instead, captures that really hip blend of modes that came into play when mainstream attention wasn't focused on the clubs, and artists were able to really get creative with their sound – using other soul styles and boogie modes to turn out the kind of overlooked gems you'll find within!
