Gloria BarnesUptown ... LP
Maple/Remined, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
One of the few rare albums on the Maple label – a 70s imprint that's known for some incredible funk and soul! Despite the title, the set's a record that sounds a lot more down-home than uptown – thanks to hard-wailing vocals from Gloria Barnes herself, and a nicely rough-edged quality to the instrumentation overall – supposedly handled by Lee Moses and The Ohio Players – the latter of whom wrote a few of the songs too! The album's one of the few on Maple – and in a way, it's almost a female soul counterpart to the Lee Moses record on the same label – done in a similar mix of rootsy modes and east coast indie soul – occasionally sweet at points, but mostly deep soul overall. Titles include "Gotta Get Away", "I Found Myself", "Old Before My Time", "I'll Go All The Way", "She Wants A Stand In", and "You Don't Mean It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download!)
Also available Uptown (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD 13.99

Lee MosesTime & Place ... CD
Maple/Future Days, 1971. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A lost deep soul set from Lee Moses – a relatively obscure vocalist, but one who we'd rank right up there with James Carr, Wilson Pickett, or any of their contemporaries! Lee's music has a hard southern soul feel to it – sounding almost like a pile of 45s from a label like Sound Stage 7, or some more obscure imprint from below the Mason-Dixon line – even though the record was issued on the Maple label up north. And possibly it's Lee's odd northern placement with a deeply southern style that never got him his due back in the day – but that loss is our gain, as the record's an under-discovered treasure that's filled with really hard-wailing soul tunes! There's a slightly garagey feel to the production – quite gritty at times, with even more of an earthier undercurrent than you'd hear on work from Memphis or Muscle Shoals – and Lee matches this sound wonderfully with a really raspy approach to vocals. Titles include a great version of "California Dreaming", plus the tracks "Time & Place", "Got That Will", "Every Boy & Girl", "Hey Joe", "Free At Last", and "Adorable One". CD

✨✧ Five Man Electrical BandFive Man Electrical Band ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A jangle-pop spectacular from The Five Man Electrical Band – an incredibly groovy outfit from late 60s Canada! Although issued at the end of the 60s, the album's got a sweetly-crafted feel that sounds a lot like some of the best mid 60s pop – particularly that coming from overseas – almost a lost Brit Invasion sort of sound, but one that's tuned with a few odder touches that show the group's ear for some of the west coast musical changes of the time. All tunes are incredibly catchy, and recorded with great focus on the jangly lead guitar – so much so that the vocals are almost buried down a bit more in the mix, which makes for a kind of cooly tripped-out sound. Titles include "Maple Lane", "Fancy Dancin Man", "Black Sheep Of The Family", "Running Back", "Didn't Know The Time", "Five Man Electrical Band", and "Private Train". CD also features a whopping 9 tracks added to the original album – some by the group as The Staccatos – with titles that include "Half Past Midnight", "Weather Man", "Super Girl", "Let's Run Away", "Catch The Love Parade", and "Whisper Words". (Pickwick pressing. Cover has small upper corner ding, but is nice otherwise.)

Guess WhoWheatfield Soul (South American pressing) ... LP
RCA (Argentina), 1968. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A classic of Canadian rock – and a set that broke big on this side of the border too! Wheatfield Soul is a sublime showcase for the young talents of Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, and other members of the group – working here in a mix of jazz/rock modes and blue-eyed soul that would go onto set the scene for countless other groups in years to come – hard to describe accurately, but beautifully summed up in the album's "These Eyes" hit! Cummings vocals and keyboards come across wonderfully – and the rhythms often have clever changes that hint at his jazzy future to come, but on shorter tunes here that have a rich amount of complexity packed in a very tight space. Titles include "These Eyes", "Lightfoot", "I Found Her In A Star", "Pink Wine Sparkles In The Glass", "Maple Fudge", "We're Coming To Dinner", "When You Touch Me", and the amazing 10 minute tune "Friends Of Mine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono Argentinian pressing in the alternate cover! Cover has mostly split seams, light wear and aging, and a filled in square and small name in marker on back.)

Joe McPheeMystery J (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2014. New Copy ... $18.99
The legendary Joe McPhee works here with two more obscure improvisers – Jen Clare Paulson on viola and Brian Labycz on electronics – both musicians who open Joe up to that never-ending stream of inspiration that's made his music so wonderful over the years! McPhee plays pocket cornet and alto sax – and is sometimes the key element to humanize the darker, more abstract sounds from the other instruments – other times maybe more responsive to their more tonal, textural expressions – always at a level that shows what a magnanimous musician Joe can be, no matter what the setting! The whole thing is definitely one of the darker McPhee recordings we've heard in recent years – and the improvisations were recorded live at Sugar Maple in Milwaukee. Titles include "Jupiter", "Joy", "Justice", and "Josiah". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley BrothersEarly Starday/King Years – 1958 to 1961 (4CD set) ... CD
King/Gusto, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Our favorite years of the Stanley Brothers – material recorded after they'd left the bigger labels, and really started to hit their stride for the smaller indies King and Starday Records! Both companies were completely faithful to the growing sound of bluegrass, and really let the brothers take off and soar – unlocking that amazing harmony style that made their vocals so wonderful, and really honing their instrumental skills – often working alongside the mandolin of Bill Napier, whose talents here are tremendous! The set's way nicer than you might expect from the Gusto label – much more in a Bear Family mode, with very detailed notes, session information, and lots of images – all to support over 100 classic tracks, with titles that include "I Saw The Light", "Wild Bill Jones", "I'd Worship You", "Just Dreamin", "Beneath The Maple", "If I Lose", "Daybreak In Dixie", "Lonely Tombs", "Pass Me Not", "Purple Robe", "Wings Of Angels", "The Angel Of Death", "Your Selfish Heart", "How Mountain Girls Can Love", and our favorite-ever recording of "Man Of Constant Sorrow".
