Gil Scott-HeronLegend In His Own Mind ... LP
Made In Germany (Germany), 1983. New Copy ... $31.99 35.99
An excellent double-length live set from Gil Scott Heron – recorded right in the middle of his classic years on Arista Records, and with an extended groove that shows just how great he could be in a concert setting! Many of these tracks are quite long, with both instrumental solos and a more freewheeling vibe from Gil – who seems to put even more power into the sorts of messages that always make his music so wonderful. The group features flute from Vernon James and tenor from Ron Holloway – and Gil himself plays plenty of great keyboards, including Fender Rhodes – which brings a very fluid vibe to his vocal presentation. Tracks include "We Almost Lost Detroit", "B Movie", "Better Days Ahead", "Washington DC", "Shut Em Down", "Winter In America", "Angola Louisiana", "Johannesburg", and a great 15 minute take on "The Bottle". Ash Ra TempelJoin Inn ... LP
Ohr/Made In Germany (Germany), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 33.99
A prog rock masterpiece from Ash Ra Temple – a set that still has the group in very pschedelic, jamming, and improvisational territory – as they serve up two album-length tracks that really soar to the skies on wings of sound! The group here still features lots of great keyboards and electronics from Klaus Schulze, but on side one most of the energy comes from the core interplay between the fantastic guitars of Manuel Gottsching, bass of Harmut Enke, and drums of Schulze – players who really take their combination of instruments in very different directions than UK trios of the time! Side two definitely has some spacier moments that let the keyboards dominate a bit more, alongside cool vocals from Rosi, used in very light ways – but there's plenty of jamming too – on titles that include "Freak N Roll" and "Jenseits". ✨✧ Black Artists GroupBlack Artists Group In Paris, Aries 1973 ... LP
BAG/Aguirre (Germany), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the best records ever from this famous St Louis collective – recorded in Paris a few years after the AACM made their big splash on the city – and done with a very similar feel! The instrumentation is loose, open-ended, and incredibly creative – a wonderful array of sounds, textures, and shapes – played by a lineup that includes Oliver Lake on saxes and flute, Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Joseph Bowie on trombone, Floyd LeFlore on trumpet, and Charles Bobo Shaw on drums and percussion – with additional percussion help from all the other group members, too! Tracks are all very long – and titles include "OLCSJBFLBC Bag", "Echoes", "Something To Play On", and "Re-Cre-A-Tion". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousStrain, Crack, & Break – Music From The Nurse With Wound List Vol 2 – Germany ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Wild sounds in a range of different styles – jazz, rock, and more outside modes – all served up in support of a legendary list made years ago by the group Nurse With Wound! The list was a secret guide to all things weird and unusual – put together decades back, and now famous as kind of a Rosetta Stone for stepping into music from the farther left side of the spectrum – here served up from a range of German recordings from back in the day, most recorded during a key moment when the scene was really breaking down boundaries in styles! There's a fair bit of electric elements here, and you'll recognize a few artists as being heroes from the prog and MPS generations – on titles that include "Fritz Muller Traum" by Fritz Muller, "Jazzi Jazzi" by Tomorrow's Gift, "Output" by Wolfgang Dauner, "Black Sand" by Brainticket, "Trauma" by Gomorrha, "Big City" by Thirsty Moon, "Snakeskin Tango" by Brainstorm, "Scorpion" by Association PC, "The Executioner" by My Solid Ground, "It Loves Want To Have Done" by Anima Sound, and "It's So Nice" by Ex Magma. ✨✧ Azimuth (John Taylor/Norma Winstone/Kenny Wheeler)Azimuth ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
The stunning debut of this ultra-hip trio – not to be confused with the similarly-named Brazilian group Azymuth, but instead a British combo who really helped find new ways of expression in an ECM setting! All three artists here had already made waves on their scene in the years before – pianist John Taylor, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and vocalist Norma Winstone – the last of whom often uses her voice as more of an instrument than an conveyor of words, which is an approach that sounds beautiful here. There's an open, airy quality to the record that's completely sublime – and which is an especially fantastic setting for Taylor's piano, who also delivers some great electronics – matched with really thoughtful expressions from Kenny Wheeler, whose sound here is incredible. Titles include "Jacob", "Greek Triangle", "Azimuth", "Siren's Song", and "O". LP, Vinyl record album

Martin RevMartin Rev ... LP
Infidelity/Bureau B (Germany), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
The brilliant solo debut of Martin Rev – a set that feels like it's peeled away all his best contributions from the first Suicide album, then found a way to serve them up with a slightly different vibe that really sets the album apart! There's lots of analog fuzz and echo – that same spacey style that made Suicide so great – but the keyboards dominate even more than before, as only one tune features vocals – which lets Rev do all these really cool things with the electronics – continuing his way of taking earlier prog, avant, and Krautrock experiments and fusing them into a leaner, meaner style for the punk generation! The album's got a very seminal sound – a key text in the cold wave generation – and titles include "Jomo", "Mari", "Baby O Baby", "Nineteen 86", and "Asia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fred FrithGuitar Solos – Fifty ... LP
Caroline/Weekend (Germany), 1974/2024. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album from guitarist Fred Frith – his solo debut, and a record that really set the tone for so many other musicians for years to come! Frith wasn't the first person to improvise on the guitar – but he might have been the first to use an electric in ways that tied together new ideas in jazz, prog, and other experimental musics – all at a level that made his playing a hero to many different scenes at once, and really helped open ears to all the different changes that were taking places in the 70s! The whole thing is a monstrous musical message from the pre-punk years – one that has really strong resonance all these many years later – thanks to titles that include "Hollow Music", "No Birds", "Out Of Their Heads", "Glass c/w Steel", "Hello Music", and "Not Forgotton". This great "Fifty" version features a full bonus album of new recordings in the spirit of the original – titles that include "Quicksilver", "Phalaropes", "Jack's Neap Tide", "Move Indigo", "To Do", and "The Map Of Dreams". ✨✧ VariousEcuatoriana – El Universo Paralelo De Polibio Mayorga (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fadisa/Analog Africa (Germany), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
There's a host of cool keyboards on the cover, and that's what you'll hear on the record as well – used in all these really groovy space age styles over more conventional Latin rhythms – all of which made for a really incredible subgenre of sounds on the scene in Ecuador during the 70s! Most of the music here has the touch of Polibio Mayorga on the keys – sometimes as the lead artist, sometimes as a contributor to another's' work – and the cuts mix rootsier percussion and sometimes use Andean melodies, but all have these really weird and unusual electric parts too – an outer space organ line, or a moogy electronic flourish – all of which makes for some wonderfully trippy sounds throughout! As always with Analog Africa, the presentation is fantastic – and titles include "America India" by Junior Y Su Equipo, "Mi Paisa" by Olmedo Torres Y Poblibio Mayorga, "Haciendo Bomba" by Alcibiades Y Su Banda, "Llorona" by Los Locos Del Ritmo, "Muevase Vecina" by Eduardo Morales, "Bomba De Pobres" by Alcibiades Y Su Banda, "La Perra Vida" by Conjunto La Lorga, "Munequita Blanca" by Orti Mayorga Y Chiriboga, and "Cumbia Totorana", "Ferrocarril", and "Culebrita Dormida" by Polibio Mayorga. ✨✧ Dur Dur BandBerlin Session ... LP
Out Here (Germany), 2023. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great return to form for this legendary Somalian group – a combo who made some important records in the 80s, but were part of the huge diaspora on their scene as the troubles of the following decade forced a long pause in cultural activity! Here, the group are reborn with new youthful energy – as Dur Dur Band International, and working here with vocals from three different singers – Fadumina Hilowle, Zabiib Sharabi, and Cabdinuur Alaale – three different voices who really help expand the sound of the set! There's still plenty of East African roots here – in both the rhythms, and the exotic currents of the keyboards and saxophone lines – and despite the Berlin setting for the album, the record has a very traditional approach to production and presentation. Titles include "Love My Love", "Duurka", "Jija Love", "Sallal", "Heeyaa", "Hasha Geel", and "Riyo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kamal KeilaMuslims & Christians ... LP
Habibi Funk (Germany), Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Really wonderful work from the early 90s scene in Khartoum – sounds that have a much more 70s-styled sound than you might expect! That sound is in keeping with Kamal Keila, who was never a mainstream artist at all – and instead made material like this away from the limelight, which might account for the older spirit – as the music mixes together currents of vintage American soul, particularly some of the Texas horn-heavy bands of the late 60s – plus a bit of Ethiopian flair in the rhythms, and maybe even a bit of bluesy inflections in Keila's voice – even though the music is hardly in the realm of blues at all! The whole thing is as compelling as it is righteous – a quality you'll certainly discover in the English language lyrics of the set, which comprise about half the material. Titles include "Agricultural Revolution", "Sudan In The Heart Of Africa", "Muslims & Christians", "African Unity", "Taban Ahwak", "Ya Shanifi", and "Ajmal Youm". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wanda JacksonHoney Bop (10 inch 45rpm LP) ... LP
Bear Family (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great collection that brings together some of the most hard-rocking tracks from Wanda Jackson's early years on Capitol Records – a time when the singer became an instant legend for her hard-edged way of putting over a tune! At a time when the early rock scene was dominated by male singers, Jackson cut a very striking figure as one of the few who could weave together elements of hillbilly and R&B like the best young singers at Sun Records – captured here with a rawness that's very different than most of the mainstream productions that Capitol were putting down for the pop market! The guitar is great – as raw and ragged as the vocals – and titles include "Baby Loves Him", "Mean Mean Man", "You Don't Know Baby", "Let's Have A Party", "Funnel Of Love", "Savin My Love", "Honey Bop", "Tongue Tied", "Cool Love", "Hot Dog That Made Him Mad", and the classic "Fujiyama Mama".
