✨✧ MachitoMucho Macho Machito (Pablo) ... LP
Pablo, 1948. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Excellent 2LP set that brings together a whole bunch of great Machito sides from the late 40s. This is classic stuff that defined the Latin jazz idiom, and stood as an inspiration to players for years. The group includes Mario Bauza on trumpet, Jose Madera on tenor, Frank Davila on trumpet, Jose Mangual on bongos, and Machito and Graciela on vocals. The set includes 24 tracks, with the titles "Asia Minor", "Jungle Drums", "Donkey Serenade", "Mambo Jambo", "Babalu", and "Gone City". Great stuff, and very hard to find otherwise. ✨✧ Village PeopleMacho Man ... LP
Casablanca, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The macho aesthetic gets redefined for a whole new audience – as The Village People play with a pastiche of masculine images from daily life, all recast for the post-Stonewall generation! The group bring camp back firmly for the 70s – and are still one of the best-remembered mainstream disco acts of the time – thanks to catchy, poppy grooves that had most of the country humming their tunes, even if they didn't agree with their sexual politics. Grooves are by the hit team that made most of the VP albums strong – Horace Ott arranging, Gypsy Lane backing, and Jacques Morali at the glorious helm of the whole thing – and titles include "Macho Man", "I Am What I Am", "Key West", and "Sodom & Gomorrah". Celi BeeAlternating Currents (with bonus tracks) ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.99
Sweetly soaring disco from the legendary Celi Bee – easily one of our favorite disco divas of the late 70s! This album's got a slightly lighter feel than some of Celi's other work – a bit less drama at times, but still plenty of full-on clubby rhythms – thanks to arrangements from Hector Garrido, and some relatively full orchestrations overall. There's a definite New York groove to most of the numbers, but also a bit of a Miami vibe too – and titles include "Together", "Macho", "Hold Your Horses Babe", "Comin Up Strong", "Disposable Love", and "Lost In Love". CD features the bonus tracks "Macho (7 inch mix)" and "Hold Your Horses (UK 12" mix)". CD

Celi BeeGreatest Hits ... CD
Get Disconnected, Late 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
More a retrospective of Celi Bee's best disco work than a true greatest hits collection – but plenty darn great nonetheless, given her flair for a catchy, kitschy club tune! Celi's definitely one of the campiest talents of her generation – but she's also plenty darn comfortable in that role too, and brings a sense of poise and presence to these tunes that really makes them work. She's clearly not one of the most soulful divas in the disco, but she's also clearly very much at home on the dancefloor – and shows a great talent here for rising above the crowds with her freewheeling interpretations of the tunes! CD features a whopping 14 tracks in all – maybe all the titles Celi ever recorded during her big years – and selections include "Superman", "Fly Me On The Wings Of Love", "One Love", "Macho", "Closer Closer", "Comin Up Strong", "Alternating Currents", "Blow My Mind", "For The Love Of My Man", and "Half A Love". Pearl JamTen ... CD
Epic, 1991. Used ... $2.99
Anthemic early 90s rock from Pearl Jam – one of the biggest debuts of all time and for good reason! Ten has a big, classic rock-reared sound, but done with such forthright sincerity and for the time, completely refreshing lack of macho posturing, it really was the perfect formula for a breakout smash in its era and it's worthy of its legacy – especially in retrospect! One classic song after another including "Once", "Alive", "Jeremy", "Why Go", "Black", "Porch", "Oceans", "Garden", "Deep" and "Release". CD

✨✧ Salum Abdallah & Cuban Marimba BandNgoma Tanzania ... LP
Domino Sound, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from the short-lived musical legacy of Salum Abdallah and his Cuban Marimba Band – a group from Tanzania, but one who play with lots of influence from Latin Music – as you might guess from their name! And yet, unlike some of the larger, fuller Latin-influenced groups that were springing up on the West African scene of the 60s, this combo has a sound that's pretty stripped-down – often just heavy percussion and work on guitar – which appears to be a unique hybrid of the Cuban style of the instrument, which gets plucked and inflected in great ways next to the vocals! The well-done set might be the best we've seen so far from the Domino Sound label – and features tracks that include "Njoo Haraka", "Naumiya", "Cuba Cha Cha", "Kutenda Maovu", "Ngoma Iko Huku", "Macho Laini", "Masikitiko", and "Asiye Bahati Duniani". A good Latin jazz jam session from the late 80's – featuring a tight ensemble running through a number of hard swinging original compositions in a very classic mode. ✨✧ VariousT Groove Presents TK Super Disco Classics 1977 to 1979 ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Classic cuts from the TK Records stable of Miami disco from the 70s – all of which are served up here on 7" single mixes, a fair bit of which appear here on CD for the first time ever! TK is maybe best known for it's long-spun club cuts that were a perfect fit for the budding 12" format in the mid 70s – but the label also turned out plenty of cuts with a tight, catchy groove that was perfect for a funky 45 – which might have been why TK was one of the few labels to rule both on the radio and on the dancefloors back in the day! Japanese DJ T Groove takes us through 20 TK singles here – with tracks that include "Return Of Vader" by AD, "Macho" by Celi Bee & The Buzzy Bunch, "Higher" by Chi-Lites, "Star Cruiser" by Gregg Diamond, "Moon Ride" by Universal Love, "Let's Dance" by Wild Honey, "Have A Good Day (part 1)" by Gail Eason, "Music (voc)" by Montreal Sound, "I'm Gonna Dance" by Asha Puthli, "Dancin In My Feet" by Laura Taylor, "Holding Back" by Gregg Diamond, "At Midnight" by T Connection, "If There's Love" by Amant, "Spank" by Jimmy Bo Horne, and "The Break (short)" by Kat Mandu. ✨✧ Ornette ColemanBody Meta ... CD
Verve, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Ornette's best LPs from the 70's! Recorded in 1976, this is a perfect demonstration of the harmelodic style, with the whole group jaunting along in tight choppy bits. James Blood Ulmer's on guitar, and the sound is very dark and deep. Tracks include "Voice Poetry", "Macho Woman", and "Home Grown". CD

✨✧ Grupo ManifestoManifesto Musical ... LP
Elenco (Brazil), 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The first album by this obscure and groovy early MPB-ish group – done in a great style that features with a range of voices laid out over some crazy off-kilter arrangements! The album's got mostly a bossa/samba feel, and in the same vein as Quarteto Em Cy or Tamba Trio, but with more space in the recording, and some great unique material. Grupo Manifesto were certainly one of the more obscure groups from the time, but they're right up there with other faves from the post bossa era, and with the same high quality as the best artists on the Elenco label. The album's got a crazy cover, like most of the Elenco records – and features the tracks "Manifesto", "O Mundo E Nosso", "Garota Esquerdinha", "Brasil Da Samba", and "Cabra Macho". ✨✧ VariousLiving In The Streets Vol 2 – More Wah Wah Jazz, Funky Soul, & Other Dirty Grooves ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Even better than volume one – and a stellar collection of rare funky grooves! The compilation features a brilliant batch of tracks from the 70s – mostly underground soul, jazz, and funk tunes that have yet to appear on reissues, chosen by UK DJ Dean Rudland, with a feel that's as righteous and progressive as the title might imply. There's lots of gems on here that were only ever issued on 45s, or on the kinds of rare LPs that we'd be selling in the $100 range, if and when we could find them! Titles include "Sleep Talk" by King Errison, "Theme From The Men" by Joe Bataan, "Kissing My Love" by Spanky Wilson, "Fever" by Sharon Cash, "Where Will You Run" by Walter Hawkins & Selah, "Harambee" by Jambo, "Africa" by Preston Epps, "Mucho Macho" by Macho, "I Must Be Doing Something Right" by Irene Reed, "I Can't Stand It" by Brenda George, "Afro Texas" by Letta Mbulu, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Katie Love & The Four Shades Of Black, "Kicking Back" by Joe Houston, "Love Potion Cheeba Cheeba" by The Mighty Tom Cats & Ann Winley, and "Return Of The Prodigal Son" by Byrdie Green. ✨✧ Star CityI'm A Man (with bonus track) ... CD
Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A macho disco classic from the TK Records family of labels – in case you couldn't guess from the image on the cover! The drums are more pounding here than on the typical clubby record of the time – especially on the title track – and there's this nicely funky groove at most points, a full-on forceful style that makes no bones about where the music is headed – and which gets things going long before the vocals come into the mix! Those are sung by Karen Silver – who never tries to compete with the rhythms, but just finds a nice way to slide along with the groove. Titles include "I'm A Man", "I Can't Get Over You", "Melody Of Love", "Good Times", and "Make Time For Love". CD features the bonus track "I'm A Man (7" version)". CD

Gavin ButtNo Machos Or Pop Stars – When The Leeds Art Experiment Went Punk ... Book
Duke University Press, 2022. New Copy ... $19.99 27.99
The rise of punk is usually tied to the scene of the Sex Pistols and others up in London – but right from the start, there was plenty happening up in Leeds – a scene that gave the world Gang Of Four, The Mekons, Soft Cell, Scritti Politti, and other key acts from the end of the 70s! Leeds was a university town, and very different than London and other working class scenes in the UK – as the acts in the city often approached their craft with a fair bit of intellectual background – something that shows not just in the lyrics, but the experimental constructions of their instrumentation too. Author Gavin Butt really dives deep into the Leeds scene of the period – mixing history with a stunning amount of information from interviews – with band members and other people on the scene – all in a book that's a much more lively read than you might expect from an academic press. The book is illustrated with black and white images throughout, features a suggested discography at the back, and this softcover edition is 290 pages in length. Book

Ray CamachoMucha Salsa ... CD
Luna/Everland (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
An obscure salsa set from Ray Camacho – an artist who always seems willing to mix up styles in his music! That's definitely the case here, as Ray mixes straighter Latin modes with a few border touches – creating a hybrid of New York and Mexican modes that's pretty unique – but which also has some occasional funk and soul currents that are probably the record's strongest suit! Ray plays trumpet, and the rest of the group includes guitar, trombone, and plenty of percussion – plus sax and piano from Manuel Palafox, who also handles arrangements. Titles include a great cover of "Low Rider", dubbed "El Pachuco", the Latin funk number "Tomas Al Timbal", and a funky take on Brass Construction's "Movin On". – plus "Me Patina El Coco", "Madrecita Linda", "Dime La Verdad", "El Pachuco", "Confesion", "Testigo Fui", and "Dulce Y Amarga". Ray Camacho BandReach Out ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1980. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
Brilliant brown-eyed soul from Ray Camacho – an artist who was previously known for more border-styled work with his Teardrops band, but who steps out here with a surprisingly great blend of electric jazz and boogie! The approach is wonderful – a real re-direction of Ray's earlier groove into even more soulful territory – handled with that unique fusion that was happening in just a few of the best Texas spots, like the scene in Austin at the time. The album's equal parts soul and funk, but still has a few Latin roots too – and had this gem come out on Fantasy Records at the time, it would have pushed Ray and group into much headier territory. But we're also happy the set's been undiscovered for so many years (consider it our little secret) – and titles include "Reach Out", "Diggin Deep", "Shake What You Got", "Nobody But You", "Nothing But A Party", and "What A Day". ✨✧ Moana PozziImpulsi Di Sesso ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), Late 80s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The singing debut of Moana Pozzi – a figure known equally well on the Italian scene for her role in pornography and politics! The style here is as slinky and sexy as you might guess from the cover – more laidback than 70s disco with a female porno singer in the lead, with plenty of 80s keyboards, beats, and basslines – all of which are handled by Jay Horus for the set! The grooves do plenty, so Moana doesn't have to add much – just some light, slinky vocals over rhythms that are mostly in a midtempo sort of groove! Titles include "Supermacho", "Rocky", "Gate One", "Auto Stop", "Amore Tossico", "Ultima Notte", and "La Gabbia". LP, Vinyl record album
