✨✧ Joe Armon-JonesTurn To Clear View (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". ✨✧ David AxelrodSongs Of Experience (with booklet) ... CD
Capitol/Now Again, 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever by studio genius David Axelrod! The album's one of Axelrod's first on his own – cut for Capitol Records at a time when he was working with some of the label's biggest selling soul acts – like Cannonball Adderley and Lou Rawls – turning their already-successful sounds into super-hit material by adding some nice funky touches, and excellent baroque production. This album lets Axelrod fully explore his talents for larger studio arrangements, and complex yet soulful instrumentation. The record is subtitled "an anthology of awareness after birth, based on the 18th century poems of William Blake" – and it features incredible arrangements conducted by Don Randi, played by a host of excellent LA jazz and studio players. The overall sound is spacey and dark, with nice touches of funk, and plenty of cool instrumental passages that have been sampled over the years by hip hoppers and other producers. Titles include "London", "The Fly", "The Human Abstract", "A Divine Image", and "The Sick Rose". CD

AzymuthPartido Novo ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2002. Used ... $14.99
Warm, wonderful, and incredibly far-reaching in scope – possibly the most ambitious record cut by Azymuth in recent years – a perfect blend of jazzy fusion, Brazilian rhythms, and some of the London broken beat culture that the group have come into contact with through their label, Far Out. The sound is clean and spare – a dance between percussion and keyboards that reminds us how great Azymuth can sound when they keep things simple. A few cuts have vocals, but the overall approach is instrumental – and the record features production and programming by Roc Hunter, and was recorded by Kirk Degiorgio. Titles include "Tempo Classico", "Em Marica", "Partido Novo", "Sudade Do Doutor", "Nome Dele E Joan", "Algoado Doce", and "Rede De Espera". CD has 12 tracks in all. CD

Banda Black RioRebirth (aka Movimento) ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2002. Used ... $14.99
New work from one of the greatest Brazilian soul groups of the 70s – and they're still pretty darn great! The album's smoother and perhaps a bit less funk-oriented than some of Banda Black Rio's classic work – but it's still a perfect blend of Brazilian rhythms and instrumentation with American soul, handled in a mode that reminds us of recent albums by Ed Motta, with soulful vocals out front, and compressed instrumentation grooving around in a smooth funky style that's reminiscent of the glory days of mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire. The classic reference is no surprise, though, as the group's got some help from Brazilian soul legend Cassiano – who does the arrangements on some of the album's tracks – and a few other tracks feature remixes from London talents like Faze Action and others! Titles include "Samba Blum", "Aquarius", "Magia Do Prazer", "Nova Guanabara", "Candeia", and "Tabuleiro Da Cor". The whole thing's great – right up there with the best work of the samba soul generation, and the kind of record that would make the group huge, even if it were the only one they ever cut! CD

John BarryJohn Barry Plays 007 & Other 60s Themes For Film & Television ... CD
El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
An excellent collection of work from the great John Barry – one that focuses on his famous contributions for the James Bond films – but also includes other soundtrack and instrumental material as well! The set begins with the John Barry Plays 007 record – a brilliant album that not only features some instrumental soundtrack themes, but also includes some great mod Barry instrumentals from the 60s – kind of a nice link to his sophisticated film music, and some of his smaller combo work! Titles include "Kinky", "Fancy Dance", "007", "From Russia With Love", "Big Shield", "Aliki", "Monkey Feathers", and "The London Theme". Next are two tracks from Elizabeth Taylor In London – "Lovers & Browning", with a recitation by Taylor – plus the jazzy instrumental "The London Waltz". Next are two tracks from Zulu – a colonial period film that starred Michael Caine – followed by 15 more groovy instrumentals that include "Tit Willow Twist", "Hit & Miss", "Easy Beat", "Beat Girl", "The Lolly Theme", "Spinnerree", "Roman Spring Of Mrs Stone", "The Sun's Hooray", and "Saturday's Child". I See Colors, 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A very cool record – one that's billed as "jazz, but not as you know it" – which is no surprise, given that trumpeter Antoine Berjeaut is working very closely with Makaya McCraven! Makaya plays drums in the group, and also produced the record – emphasizing some of the sharp edges in the rhythms, and fast changes in tone and color – supplied strongly by Antoine's trumpet, in a lineup that also features McCraven's labelmate Junius Paul on bass, plus Julien Lourau on tenor, Guillaume Magne on guitar, Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch on live electronics, and Arnaud Roulin on keyboards – all working together with the Chicago contingent in some fantastic transatlantic energy that matches some of McCraven's music with the London scene. Titles include "Sci-Fi", "Lourau's Loop", "Down The Clipper", "Shadows", "Triple A", and "JP's Beats". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic little album from the great Matt Berry – quite different than some of his other records, but in a really great way! Berry pays homage to some of the greatest songs from the world of British TV – fab themes from the 60s and 70s, served up here with funky jazz instrumentation that includes a wealth of wonderful sounds from Matt's collection of vintage keyboards – mixed with tight drums, riffing guitar, and other groovy touches! There's occasional chorus vocals on some cuts, but no real lyrics at all – and the set features versions of "Are You Being Served", "The Good Life", "Top Of The Pops", "Picture Box", "The Liver Birds", "Rainbow", "Blankety Blank", "London Weekend Television", "Doctor Who", "Wildtrak", "World In Action", and "Sorry". Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". David BowieConversation Piece (5CD & book set) ... CD
Parlophone, Late 60s. New Copy 5CD & book ... $89.99 99.99
An amazing legacy of lost music from David Bowie – a host of obscure recordings, demos, and session tracks done in the short space leading up to the Space Oddity album – presented in a book-style package that also features two versions of that classic record too! Some of this material has circulated digitally, others on very expensive vinyl sets, but together the 5CD package offers up the biggest picture we've ever seen of the development of Bowie in the years after his initial recordings for Deram, and his Space Oddity explosion in 1969. CD1 features home demos of tunes that include "Animal Farm", "April's Tooth Of Gold", "The Reverend Raymond Brown", "Mother Grey", "Goodbye 3d Joe", "Angel Angel Grubby Face", and "Space Oddity". CD2 offers up rare demos for Mercury – with titles that include "Janine", "Ching A Ling", "I'm Not Quite", "Lover To The Dawn", "When I'm Five", and "Life Is A Circus". CD3 features Conversation Pieces – alternate takes of "London By Ta Ta" and "In The Heat Of The Morning" - plus BBC sessions, and more alternate takes. CD4 features the original David Bowie album before it transformed into Space Oddity, and CD5 features the full Space Oddity album in its 2019 Tony Visconti mix – both CDs with bonus tracks too. Includes a great 120 page hardcover book, too! CD

✨✧ David BowiePinups ... CD
Virgin, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key blend of two chapters in David Bowie's career – his guitar-heavy groove with the Spiders From Mars, and his 60s roots in mod London! The tracks here all date from the mid 60s, and are Bowie's homage to that period in his life – but they're all played with a glammish 70s sensibility, and some definite Ziggy Stardust elements in the way the guitars come into the mix. Given Bowie's rise as a key songwriter of his time, the step back to an album of all covers is a surprising, but genius move – and the execution of the tunes here comes off brilliantly – with plenty of personal spirit that keeps them from being simple rehashes of hits! Tracks include "See Emily Play", "Friday On My Mind", "I Can't Explain", "Everything's Alright", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Shapes Of Things", and "Here Comes The Night". CD

Moses BoydDark Matter ... LP
Exodus (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
A hell of a record from drummer Moses Boyd – a musician who's fast becoming way more than a drummer! Here, Boyd is in the same "jazz plus" territory of Makaya McCraven – still strongly respectful of his lineage in the music, but also trying very hard to push the whole thing forward, and open up to new sounds and new ears – all in ways that are never commercial or crossover at all! Moses is clearly becoming a force on the London scene to match the collaborative genius of Makaya in Chicago – and although there's no personnel listed on the set, we can hear some fantastic work on saxes, keyboards, and vocals – which are handled by both male and female singers. And although Boyd drums on the set, he's clearly working more as a larger producer/arranger – one who isn't afraid to throw in a few beats from time to time – on titles that include "Yoyo", "Shades Of You", "Stranger Than Fiction", "BTB", "Far Gone", "Nommos Descent", and "What Now". Brand New HeaviesAll About The Funk (Japanese pressing) ... CD
One Two/Recall (Japan), 2004. Used ... $6.99
The Brand New Heavies are back on top – coming across with a batch of funky soul tracks that should cross over large! The sound here is much tighter and hook-heavy than on their recent Japanese release – more in the vein of the chart-crossing funk the group were cooking up at the end of their early 90s run – a blend of 70s soul influences, stripped-down production, and enough modern R&B twists to carry their work quite far from their London roots. There's a heck of a lot of guitar on the set – fuzzed-up but compressed nicely, underneath vocals from new singer Nicole Russo. ✨✧ Brown SugarI'm In Love With A Dreadlocks – Brown Sugar & The Birth Of Lovers Rock 1977 to 1980 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first collection we've ever seen to do justice to the Brown Sugar trio from the UK reggae scene of the late 70s – a group who do a fantastic job of merging older sweet soul styles with a new lovers' vibe, all in a mode that's completely sublime! The group's noteworthy as the starting place of Caron Wheeler, who'd later rise to great fame in Soul II Soul – and Carol Simms, who'd later rise on her own as Kofi – but even without that later legacy, the music here is completely wonderful – and is presented with detailed notes, in a set that collects all the singles the trio recorded at the time with Dennis Bovell and John "Brownie T" Kpiaye. Brown Sugar are clearly influenced by the sweeter side of American group soul style in the late 60s – and even cover a few cuts from that era – yet they also have this bad-stepping style that really offers up the strongest current of the London style of the period – the crisper crackle and rootsier production approach that was really showing a scene coming into its own. Titles include "Black Pride", "Our Reggae Music", "Hello Stranger", "You & Your Smiling Face", "Loving Dreadlocks Dub", "Confession Hurts", "Proud", "Do You Really Love Me", "Hurtin", "Run Away Love",a nd "Dreaming Of Zion". Island/Esoteric (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD & DVD set ... $34.99
Three full albums from Jim Capaldi, plus lots of bonus work – and a DVD of live BBC performances too! First up is Oh How We Danced – the first solo album from Jim Capaldi – and a wicked little set that has Capaldi not only working with fellow bandmates from Traffic, but also with some of the best musicians on the Muscle Shoals scene! The combination of both unlock an even more soulful style than you'd expect from any Traffic side project – and provide a perfect focus for Capaldi's great vocals – already crossing over big to a soul scene with his Traffic recordings, but sparking even new interest here with Muscle Shoals rhythms. The sound is wonderful – quite different than Capaldi's bigger hits in later years, and with a rootsy, earnest feel that reminds us that at their roots, all these British acts really got things right at the start – with a freshness that needs to be remembered, even amidst their later cliches. Titles include "Eve", "Don't Be A Hero", "Last Day Of Dawn", "Oh How We Danced", "Open Your Heart", and "Love Is All You Can Try". Next is Whale Meat Again – a record with a beautiful mixing of modes – Jim Capaldi's Traffic-bred, London-styled vocals, and the sweet southern soul grooves of Muscle Shoals – all wrapped together with a sound that's even tighter than Capaldi's debut album! Jim's a big edgier here overall – both in the way he delivers the vocals, and in the lyrics of the tunes – and his singing's underscored perfectly by help from Jimmy Johnson on guitar, Barry Beckett on piano and organ, David Hood on bass, and Roger Hawkins on drums – all of whom create the right sort of warm Muscle Shoals vibe to make Capaldi's music sound wonderfully soulful. Steve Winwood plays a bit of guest organ on the set, and may well help with backing vocals – and titles include the funky "Low Rider" (different than the War tune) – plus "We'll Meet Again", "Summer Is Fading", "My Brother", "It's Alright", and "Yellow Sun". Short Cut Draw Blood is the third solo album from Traffic's Jim Capaldi, and maybe the most obscure of his early work – a set that was done after Traffic had broken up, but still with some strong help from Steve Winwood – working here in an all-star array of London and Muscle Shoals musicians, which includes Barry Beckett, Rebop Kwaku Baah, Pete Carr, Jess Roden, Chris Spedding, and others! Capaldi's easygoing groove and great way with a tune are fully intact – and titles include "Living On A Marble", "Johnny Too Bad", "Goodbye Love", "Seagull", "Keep On Trying", and "Love Hurts". Box set features bonus tracks "Going Down Slow All The Way", "Tricky Dick Rides Again", "Sugar Honey", "Still Talkin", and "Talkin About My Baby". DVD features a Old Grey Whistle Test performance from 1976, with the Jim Capaldi Band – and one more from 1976 with Jim Capaldi & The Space Cadets. CD

Daniel Casimir & Tess HirstThese Days ... LP
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
Bassist Daniel Casimir really wowed us with his last set for the Jazz Refreshed label – but this time around he teams up with vocalist Tess Hirst, and creates a sound that really blows us away from the very first note! The music is future-thinking jazz at the core, but has lots of complexity along the way – changes in tone and rhythm that never lose the groove too much, but which also show that you can do lots more in jazz than just straight swing or free improvisation! Robert Mitchell provides lots of Fender Rhodes and other keys – and while the vocals of Hirst don't dominate the tracks, she provides a righteous message that really gives the record a lot of direction and power. Another fantastic gem from the contemporary London scene – with titles that include "Don't Let Them", "Magic Money Tree", "What Did I Do", "Representation", "These Days", "Security", "They Come Over Here", and "Uncle James". ClashClash (UK version) ... CD
Epic, 1977. Used ... $3.99
One of the most stunning debut albums of the 70s – and a set that burst on the scene with a sound that summed up a generation, but which had never been heard this clearly before! This self-titled Clash album was different from other landmarks of the time – work by the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and others – as the group had a sense of raw power, but also a tunefulness too – a way of pushing their message into territory that others wouldn't have reached – with tunes that were as surprisingly hummable as they were politically correct! There's a bit less Jamaican influence here than in later Clash years, but that quality is still present somewhat – and over the years, this is definitely a set we can return to again and again – with no sense of apology or outdated ideals at all. Nearly every cut's a classic – and the original UK tracklist includes "Janie Jones", "Career Opportunities", "Police & Thieves", "Garageland", "White Riot", "London's Burning", "Deny", "I'm So Bored With The USA". Wah Wah (UK), 2006. Used ... $1.99
Max has his eyes on the stars on the cover of this one, and the record's got an equally cosmic groove to match – kind of a slower, more spaced out take on the London style of the early 21st Century – served up with fresh new touches that give the album a more righteous sound than you might expect! The beats here are often a bit mellow, and usually not that broken – just stretched out as a nice bottom support for Max's mix of keyboards and a few other jazzy touches. The overall sound is pretty great – really back to basics, and almost the sound that we'd first started loving from London in the mid 90s years when everyone was inspired by 70s soul jazz, yet never taking things too far over the top. Quite subtle, but in a really good way – with titles that include "Wallflowerin", "Prayerie", "Backstep", "Not Of This Earth", "Spinning", "Ay Calor", and "Silver Linings". CD

Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. A great collection of work from Ray Columbus – a New Zealand rocker of mid 60s vintage, but one who works here with mod sounds to rival much bigger names in London at the time! The collection begins with a core set of work by Ray Columbus & The Invaders – a super-sharp combo who have this sense of energy and fire that's a bit like Paul Revere & The Raiders, but more tuned towards beat group sounds – boundless energy that makes the rest of the combo a perfect fit for Ray's spirited lead vocals. The set then moves into solo material that Columbus recorded on his own, and with groups The Challenge, The Art Collection, and Fire – all with stylistic shifts that follow some of the British forays into trippier sounds after the initial beat boom – or some more compelling, more sophisticated material that Columbus really carries off well as a solo act. Leaf (UK), 2016. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
The amazing first full length set of Comet Is Coming – one of the boldest statements from the London jazz scene in recent years – and a brilliant blend of live jazz instrumentation and electronics! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". As a bonus, the 2CD edition also features their debut Prophecy EP – plus unheard tracks titled Ancient Tapes – "Slammin", "Transmission", and "Closing Credits". CD

Leaf (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Fantastic sounds from Comet Is Coming – a record as heady as you might guess from its cover image! These guys have a really revolutionary way of combining jazz and electronics –using the latter at a way that never sacrifices the former – especially when you've got such great drums at the core, and searing, spiritual tenor solos from King Shabaka over the top! This EP definitely has more beats and rhythms than some of their other records, but still has plenty of jazz at the core – and in a way, it's almost like Comet Is Coming finds a way to bridge the current London jazz generation with the decades-back club scene that was always claiming to be influenced by jazz, but never did things this well! Titles include "March Of The Rising Sun", "Ascension", "Start Running", and "Final Eclipse (full version)". LP, Vinyl record album

A prophetic blast of modern jazz from Comet Is Coming – one of the strongest and most original jazz trios from London or anywhere else in quite a while! There's a taut, propulsive bent to this early EP by the group that hints strongly at their soaring spiritual space jazz to come – making expansive use of a tight tenor sax, drums an brilliantly spacey synth and keys set up that hits hard and heavy while making it clear that the sky is no limit at all. Really strong stuff we're thrilled to finally have a hold on! Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

There's a pair of groovy-looking kids on the cover – but the sound of the set comes from the hands of Carlinhos Mafasoli on the organ – spinning out these lean line lines that move along nicely with the mod rhythms of the tunes! The feel is maybe more mid 60s London in terms of the choice of songs and rhythms – but Mafasoli plays the organ with that lean, clean style that was used in the generation of Walter Wanderly and some of his contemporaries – that special Brazilian approach that always makes their organ records of the 60s so great. Glen Osser handled the arrangements, and the approach is similar to Sam's Hits Of The 50s record – in that it showcases a wider range of material that points the way to the huge pop potential Cooke could have had, if he hadn't left this planet so quickly. ✨✧ John CorbettVinyl Freak – Love Letters To A Dying Medium ... Book
Duke University Press, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible look at the format of vinyl – put together by a guy who's got one of the hippest record collections we've ever seen! John Corbett's been writing about music, art, and other formats for decades – but his real labor of love is vinyl records – a format he continued to embrace even at the height of the CD era – so much so that he talked Downbeat magazine into letting him write a special column on musical delights that had never made it to the digital format! Corbett helped plenty of music get reissued on CD himself – thanks to countless label projects – but he also always held a special place in his heart for the kinds of records that never got reissued – and those are the sorts of titles featured here – a massive run of music that runs from jazz to funk, American and European, totally obscure to completely common – presented beautifully together in this massive book! The volume doesn't just bring together Corbett's columns, but also offers up full color reproductions of all the record covers, along with a few other details too – to support efforts on dozens of artists – a huge list that includes Melvin Jackson, Bill Leslie, Black Grass, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Phil Seamen, Khan Jamal, Klaus Doldinger, The Mad-Hatters, Tommy Jones, Guy Warren, The Three Souls, United Front, Johnny Lytle, London Experimental Jazz Quartet, Paul Smoker, AK Salim, Noah Howard, Jack Wilson, and many others – a good number of whom have yet to be reissued. The book is wonderful – and Corbett's longtime declaration of being a vinyl freak is more important than ever, given the rebirth of the medium! Book is 250 pages, softcover, with color images. Book

One of the great lost groups of the UK scene of the 60s – not lost to UK audiences, or to hipsters over the generations – but still an act that never made the impact on these shores that they should! The Creation are step in step right up there with early material by The Who or Small Faces – and share a similar groundbreaking re-fusion of American roots into a new London groove – all with searing guitars, clever wordplay, and a cutting-edge spirit that may well have kept them off our charts – but which makes them so great to discover all these many years later. You might have caught a few of their songs over the years – thanks to soundtrack placement from directors like Wes Anderson, or covers by many of their bigger fans. This 2CD set features 46 tracks in all, with remastering overseen by original producer Shel Talmy – and the set includes early sides by The Mark Four, some alternate takes, and even new mixes – plus an 80 page hardcover book with scores of photos, other images, session and discographical details, and a new essay too. A few tracks features Wayne Francis stepping in instead of Garcia – but apart from one track that adds trombone, and two that add guitar – the core approach of the record is drums, tenor, and tuba – with Cross handling his instrument with the richness of an acoustic bass at times, and bursting out as a soloist at others! The tenor really gets a lot of play in the mix – and we totally love Nubya from her other work – and the album's a fantastic explosion of fresh power from the London scene. Easily some of the most global work we've ever heard from Da Lata – a set that goes far beyond the mix of London and Rio that first made the group so great – into a realm that encompasses a wide range of sounds from around the world! The music's still got that great organic groove – a hip update of older modes, served up with lean instrumentation, but lots of live jazzy touches – and this time around, the music moves with elements from South American, African, and even American scenes – with guests who include Rich Medina, Mayra Andrade, Diabel Cissokho, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, and others. As usual, it's the warm instrumentation of Chris Franck that really holds the whole thing together – some especially great keyboard lines that weave in between guitars, percussion, and other great elements to forge grooves that may well be the most compelling so far from this always-great group. A beautiful little record from Durutti Column – and a bit of a departure for Vini Reilly, given that there's more of an overall concept to the album! The set's an all-instrumental one – a bit different than his blue-tinged vocal work of the first few Factory albums – but it's still awash in that wonderful guitar style of his – airy and atmospheric, but surprisingly pointed, too – really one of the strongest instrumental voices to emerge from the British post-punk scene, even if it was one of the most subtle! The music adds in piano, bits of strings, oboe, and other elements – really opening up the incredibly lovely melodies of the songs – almost in a Penguin Cafe Orchestra mode, which might be a good comparison to the spirit of the set. This beautiful version features 4 CDs' worth of material – bonus tracks on the main album, including "All That Love & Maths Can Do", "Snowflakes", "The Sea Wall", "Profondeurs Des Eaux Des Laques", "Duet", and "Estoril A Noite". Then, there's also three full CDs of concert material – a Manchester show from 2011, a London show from 1984, and an Oslo show from 1986. CD

Jazzman (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99
Maybe the best music so far from Emanative – a group who've been kicking around the London scene for the past decade or so, but who really seem to hit a new level with this album on Jazzman! The group's led by percussionist Nick Woodmansey, who often steps back to let all the other spiritual elements flow through the sound in a wonderful way – including excellent piano and organ from the great Jessica Lauren, plus reeds from Tamar Osborn and Ben Hadwen – both players who have a very cosmic approach – and haunting percussion from additional players, in addition to Nick's own work on drums, balafon, and other instruments. There's a very strong bassist in the lineup, too – Suman Joshi – and he directs the proceedings with great strength when everyone comes together – but also knows enough to step back when things are exploring different planes of global consciousness at a more personal level. Titles include "Spice Route Suite", "Egosystem", "New Day", "Heaven's Mirror", "Iyaami", "Raga Requiem", and "Minutes To Midnight For This Planet". CD

A really great set from Emmavie – one of the freshest soul singers we've heard in awhile, and a talent from the London scene we expect to be hearing a lot more from in years to come! Emmavie's got an ear for sound that often has her vocals folded right down into the music – clearly loving digital expression as much as her own organic style of singing – served up here with an approach that's crackling and bristling with energy throughout – enough depth to have ties to the old school, but a beautiful quality that definitely makes you feel that you're getting into something new. Columbia, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The debut full length set from David Essex – a singer who'd been working on the London scene for many years before the record, and who steps out here with a sound that certainly shows that legacy! At some moments, Essex can be an old-school rocker, at others he can be a bit of a balladeer – but the best tracks, the real standout moments, are those that have Essex as kind of a glam-era crooner – working with this amazing production on his vocals, which flanges them out to the side of the stereo spectrum and layers them with the squishy drums and cool guitars – a vibe that's a bit like the best UK Hot Chocolate work of the time. This approach is heard to amazing – and classic – effect on the legendary "Rock On" title cut – but it also comes through on other tracks too, and the album gives up some great surprises the deeper and deeper you dig. Other titles include "Streetfight", "Ocean Girl", "Lamplight", "Sept 15th", "Bring In The Sun", and "For Emily Whenever I May Find Her". LP, Vinyl record album

Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the first album we've ever heard from guitarist Karl Evangelista as a leader – and a set that marks a very strong statement, right from the very first note! The set is done in tribute to an older British generation of free jazz – the period which included The Blue Notes and Spontaneous Music Ensemble – and, as part of that effort, the whole thing was recorded in London, by Benedic Lamdin, with a group that features Louis Moholo Moholo on drums, Trevor Watts on alto and soprano, and Alexander Hawkins on piano! While the two older British jazz giants are a very welcome presence, some of the album's most compelling sounds might well come from the mix of Evangelista's guitar and Hawkins' piano – both instruments that have a very compelling way of making sharp sounds together, really finding the right pace and tone, with a sense of sympathy that really makes the album shine. There's a heck of a lot of music on the double-length set – and titles include "FDT", "Siyanga Pala", "I Eat Death For Breakfast", "Totoo Yan", "State Of Emergency", "Consummatum Est", "Warriors", and "Player Piano". Virgin/Universal (Japan), 1986. New Copy ... About July 17, 2020
A great snapshot of jazzy London in the years before the acid jazz explosion of the late 80s – and a surprisingly great soundtrack that's stood the test of time much more than the actual film! The music here represents a jazz-based undercurrent of the London scene that was already turning its ears back in time – to a pre-mod era of the late 50s, which is the setting for Colin McInnes original novel used for the film – portrayed here in a pastiche of vocal and instrumental songs that often have a fair bit of classic touches! Gil Evans was brought in for most of the instrumentals, and turns out some really sparkling charts that have all the charm of his best work of the 50s – and other contemporary artists do a pretty great job themselves – at least on the more jazz-based numbers. Evans numbers include versions of Charles Mingus' "Boogie Stop Shuffle" and "Better Git It In Your Soul", plus his own "Va Va Vaoom" – and the better jazzy tunes includes the excellent "Killer Blow" by Sade, plus "Have You Ever Had It Blue" by The Style Council, "That's Motivation" and "Absolute Beginners" by David Bowie, "Rodrigo Bay" by Working Week, "Selling Out" by Slim Gallard, and "Riot City" by Jerry Dammers. A later masterpiece from the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt – maybe their strongest record since their early years – and a great way of allowing their always-strong songwriting a chance to find a new sort of groove! In this case, the music is both a step back to the more acoustic colors of their first record or two – and a nod to some of the new rhythms that were coming from the London scene – used here in very subtle but brilliant ways by Watt, who'd soon go on to make some of his own creative sounds in new formats. As always, the vocals of Thorn are breathtaking and heartbreaking in ways we can hardly begin to describe – on titles that include "We Walk The Same Line", "I Don't Understand Anything", "Troubled Mind", "Rollercoaster", "Get Me", "25th December", and "Missing". Fall1982 (Hex Enduction Hour/Room To Live/In A Hole/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy 6CD ... $49.99
An amazing package – three great albums by The Fall, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hex Enduction Hour – one of our key go-to albums by The Fall – a set in which all their early promise really came into focus – with even more wit and power than before! The jagged lyricism of Mark E Smith is razor-sharp – as is the instrumentation, which is heavy on that trademark noisy guitar from Craig Scanlon, weird keyboards from Marc Riley, and the driving power of the double drummers in the group! The music is every bit as textually explosive as the words on the cover – and titles include "Who Makes The Nazis", "And This Day", "Jawbone & The Air Rifle", "The Classical", "Mere Psued Mag Ed", "Fortress/Deer Park", and the classic "Hip Priest". Is Room To Live the greatest album ever by the Fall? We're always tempted to say so – because there's something here so perfect, so focused, it's hard to think of a better album to illustrate the genius of Mark E Smith! The rhythms are weirder, the lyrics more poetic, and the guitars a bit more razor sharp than before – yet the record's also not going as easily for the catchy hooks and clever turns of phrase that would take a bit of steam out of the whole Fall sound in years to come. Darkness, but delivered with a smirk – and a record that still brings us limitless joy today! Titles include "Joker Hysterical Face", "Hard Life In The Country", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Room To Live", "Papal Visit", and "Solicitor In Studio". In A Hole is a fantastic double-length live album by The Fall – recorded at a time when the group was at the height of their creative powers! Tracks are pulled from their important early albums and singles, and delivered with a searing intensity that shows just how much the group could hang on to their jagged edge and razor-sharp wit in front of a live audience – especially one on the other side of the globe! Titles include "The Container Drivers", "Fantastic Life", "English Scheme", "Impression Of J Temperance", "Room To Live", "Hip Priest", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Backdrop", "Hard Life In The Country", "Who Makes The Nazis", "Gramme Friday", "Slags Slates Etc", and "Look Know". Box set features a bonus CD with Sessions, Singles, and Soundchecks – including material from live sets in Leeds, Manchester, and London, plus John Peel material from 1981. And another bonus CD with a full live set recorded in Melbourne, in 1982 – 14 tracks in all! CD

The two faces of Fame are live and studio – as each side of the original album was recorded in each mode – and this great CD version goes a lot further, with stereo and mono mixes and a huge number of bonus tracks! The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Disc 1 also features 13 bonus tracks from singles and EPs released in 1967 – and disc 2 is completed by 11 MORE bonus tracks – 6 released for the first time ever, including "Jumpin The Gun", "Respoken", "Fool's Paradise" and "Conquistador". 2 classic albums from British vocalist Georgie Fame – back to back on one CD! First up are Two Faces Of Fame – live and studio – as each side of the album was recorded in each mode! Side one features the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a live set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. Side two is even better, and features Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Third Face Of Fame is an even better album – one that has Fame moving past the swinging Mose Allison-inspired jazz vocal mode of earlier records, into a groovier style that picks up a range of different sounds! Georgie kicks off the album with his version of the ever-popular late 60s "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde" – and seems to use that tune as an excuse to explore a nice range of older jazz vocal approaches, including one tune that even has him reciting the lyrics in a Beatles-sounding monologue! Arrangements are by Harry South, with players that include Gordon Beck, John McLaughlin, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, and Ian Hammer – and titles include "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Prelude", "Bullets Laverne", "This Is Always", "Mellow Yellow", and "Side By Side". An unusual mix of jazz and funk – done at a level that's not entirely either style, and which maybe has more of the forward-thinking elements of some of the recent London scene! No surprise, the set was recorded in that city – by Benedic Lamdin, whose name has been on many groundbreaking records over the past decade or more – and that really adds to the special sonic quality the group get from their mix of guitar, trumpet, bass, and double drums! The guitar often fills in spaces that might normally be the territory of a keyboard – and the double drums are used in ways that are sometimes spacious, and not nearly as overwhelming as you might expect – almost an Afro Funk pulse, but turned down a few notches. A big part of the credit for the record might go to Les Reed – who sets up that great Fontana vocal style with modes that are jazzier than before, and which also echo other mod currents on the London scene – mixing in familiar American standards and soul tunes with a more swinging 60s style – which gives the whole thing the charms of similar work at the time by Alan Price or Georgie Fame! Beautiful keyboard lines from Phil France – served up here in a mode that's partly jazz, maybe partly more laidback – and often in the kind of slow-building style we love on other records on the Gondwana label! There's almost a meditative vibe to the music – somewhere in the Carlos Nino/Miguel Atwood-Ferguson mode, but maybe more compact – as Phil's keyboards are mixed with light use of violin and cello, plus some additional sound elements as well – all in a way that makes us almost think that France would be great at scoring soundtracks, although these instrumental tunes have a nicely changed-up sense of complexity overall. Much deeper than just the usual "soundscape" album you might mistake this one for – with tracks that include "December", "Animator", "London Park Hotel", "Kubrick", "Joy Of Brass", and "The Swimmer". Three full albums of romping organ work from Wynder K Frog – plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Sunshine Superfrog – a record with a Donovan reference in the title, but a much more mod set overall – thanks to searing Hammond work from organist Mick Weaver, who was maybe one of the hippest London cats on his instrument at the time! The tunes draw equally from the Hammond soul jazz of artists like Jimmy Smith or Jimmy McGriff, and from the soul instrumental style of the time – particularly the grooves of Stax and Atlantic Records – and the deft work on the keys of the organ show that you hardly need a singer to make these records groove. Titles include "I Feel So Bad", "Blues For A Frog", "Hold On I'm Coming", "Incense", "Feel It", "Dancin Pain", "Mercy", and "Somebody Help Me". Next is Out Of The Frying Pan – a lost Hammond classic from organist Mick Weaver, who famously worked with the group Traffic! This set's a lot different than the work he did in that band, though – as the album's all instrumental, and has a quick-stepping, all-soul sound that's a lot like the best Jimmy McGriff organ jazz albums on Sue Records – mixed with maybe a bit of the mod sound of London at the time! Titles include "Green Door", "Bad Eye", "Willie & The Hand Jive", "House That Jack Built", "Gasoline Alley", and "Harpsichord Shuffle". Last up is Into The Fire – which has the group really opening up, laying down some wonderfully jazzy and funky instrumentals with a fuzzy Hammond sound that's really great! Although the set was recorded in the UK, the best cuts have a soulful crossover sound that feels like it should have been recorded during one of the Cadet Concept sessions in Chicago at the same time. One cut has vocals, but the best are the instrumentals – like "Into the Fire", "Howl In Wolf's Clothing", "Hot Salt Beef", "Cool Hand Stanley", and "Why Am I Treated So Bad". A pair of unusual Lee Perry projects from the mid 70s – both of which feature a female singer in the lead, and give us a whole new side of Perry's talents! The first half of the set features material from an album issued under the title Lee Scratch Perry Presents Candy McKenzie – a set that features lead vocals from London singer Candy McKenzie, who's got a much deeper soul approach than some of her Jamaican contemporaries – a mode that's sometimes got the sweeter styles that would end up in the lovers rock years, but which also has a wider range that almost has Candy stretching out like a straighter soul singer – on titles that include "Walking In The Sun", "Disco Fits", "Breakfast In Bed", "When The Big Say", "Tell Me A Lie", "Keep Him Strong", and "Jah Knows". Next up is material from the Full Experience sessions – a record that has South African singer Aura working with Lee Scratch Perry, in a style that's got more of the deeper, dubbier elements that Scratch was helping revolutionize at the time! A beautiful little album – filled with jazz, soul, and a sense of collaboration that's extremely unique! Andy Hammill's a bassist on the British scene, and has played on a range of some of the hippest sessions in London during the past few years. For the set, he gathered together a host of famous friends – including Omar, Valerie Etienne, Carleen Anderson, Mark Murphy, Chris Bowden, and Ursula Rucker – all to provide vocals and instrumentation for a wonderful set of tracks that skips across genres as easily and fluidly as Andy's fingers skip across the strings of the bass! Andy's strong work on acoustic bass is at the core of the set, but the added guests really flesh out the sound a lot – taking the personal and mellow tunes, and opening them up tremendously. Excellent! This record is one of the lost chapters in the career of the great British alto player Joe Harriott. The session was recorded before Joe's experimental "Abstract" release, and way before his "Indo Jazz Fusions" experiments – but it's still an excellent session of off-kilter bop that shows what a keen talent Joe was on the alto. He's playing here in the company of the great Shake Keane – another fellow West Indian expatriot who was living in London – along with Coleridge Goode, Harry South, and Bobby Orr. Hartley's sound here is a great mix of rootsy rock and some of the jazzier touches that were creeping into the London scene at the time – with plenty of tightly snapping rhythms at the bottom of the tunes, enough to create a nice funky rock undercurrent on most numbers. The set's made even better by some great keyboard work from Mick Weaver – and the best cuts have some really jamming elements that let Weaver open up on organ and electric piano. Titles include "Roundabout", "Overdog", "Imitations From Home", "We Are All The Same", "Enroute", and "Plain Talkin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original gatefold pressing. Cover has some wear and a few small spots of tape.)

✨✧ Lee HazlewoodForty (with bonus tracks) ... LP
INI/Light In The Attic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Lee Hazlewood turns 40 – and we all get to celebrate! The album's another fantastic lost chapter of Lee's career – recorded in London, with production by Shel Talmy, and a spacious overall sound that's really tremendous! The sunburned western sound is still at the core of the session, but it's also set amidst sweeping strings that bring some nice Scott Walker-ish elements to the record – making for a sound that's as deeply resonant as Lee's great vocals, and a whole new side of his maturity too. Plus, the album has Hazlewood singing a number of tunes by other folks – the kind of material he never really does, but manages to completely transform on the record. Titles include "Wait Till Next Year", "It Was A Very Good Year", "Paris Bells", "The Bed", "The Night Before", and "September Song". LP features bonus tracks – "Send Out Love" and "For Once In My Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Sony (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from pianist Ashley Henry – a British pianist who seems to be soaring out of the underground to become one of the leading figures in overseas jazz – a role that he definitely fills with this fantastic major label debut! The set's every bit as great as Henry's previous material, but also expands the palette too – showcasing a bold musical vision that's equally great on vocal and instrumental fronts, as Henry welcomes in a lineup of guests who include Makaya McCraven on drums, Theo Croker and Keyon Harrold on trumpets, Judi Jackson and Milton Suggs on vocals, and the team of saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd. Yet the work is clearly Henry's own – great tunes that have a soaring, spiritual current – maybe rooted in a tradition that runs from Woody Shaw through Robert Glasper, then finds its flowering in the really rich soil of the contemporary London scene. Titles include "Realisations", "Star Child", "I Still Believe", "Sunrise", "Battle", "Dark Honey", "Ahmed", "Introspection", "I Still Believe", "Colors", and "Between The Lines". CD

Catherine HoweWhat A Beautiful Place ... CD
Reflection/Numero, 1971. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
A beautiful early 70s debut LP from a then 20-year-old, Halifax reared Catherine Howe – produced and arranged by US jazz pianist Bobby Scott in a mode that manages to feel lush and opulent while never belying Catherine's warmth, intimacy and maturity – and quite possibly the best unearthed singer-songwriter folk gem we've heard in years! The sound is warmly baroque, and Catherine's lovely vocals and evocative songwriting style is sheerly natural – recorded in a fairly stripped down setting and fleshed out with strings by the London Symphony Orchestra. The mix of intimacy and grandeur makes the record a bit of stylistic cousin to Nick Drake's Bryter Layter – we take our Drake seriously and we don't throw that comparison out lightly! Released by a doomed Reflection Records, which closed up shop the same year, it was pretty much automatically relegated to obscurity. Now, thankfully is a fertile time for the rediscovery post 60s folkish gems – and this one is at the very top of the line. Would you expect anything less from the Numero Group? Titles include "Up North", "On A Misty Morning", "Nothing More Than Strangers", "My Child", "The Innocence Of A Child", "It Comes With The Breezes" and more – plus the bonus demo "In The Hot Summer" – which led to the next phase of Catherine's career at RCA. Human Instinct/Four FoursHuman Instinct & Four Fours 1963 to 1968 ... CD
RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99
A great journey in sound – one undertaken by a New Zealand group who spent the second half of the 60s with a new name, and recording in London too! The combo first started out as The Four Fours in the southern hemisphere – a raw group with a sound that was maybe a bit influenced by the Brit Invasion era, but often carried off with a grittier, garagier vibe – one that offsets the more melodic moments with a nice sort of edge, and really keeps things interesting as the set unfolds through more than a dozen of the group's New Zealand singles for the Allied and Zodiac labels! The set then features later work by The Human Instinct – the new name for the group as they hit the British scene, where they recorded with a bit more psych in the mix – on singles here that were issued by Mercury and Deram. Later Human Instinct material has been reissued, but this is the first time the early side of their career has gotten its full due – on titles that include "Stingray", "From The Bottom Of My Heart", "Theme From An Empty Coffee Lounge", "Barrow Boy", "Jungle Cat, "It's Gonna Rain", "Time Slips Away", "One Track Mind", and "Don't Print My Memoirs" by The Four Fours – plus "A Day In My Mind's Mind", "Renaissance Fair", "Can't Stop Around", "Rich Man", "Pink Dawn", "Death Of The Seaside", and "Want To Be Loved By You" by The Human Instinct. Ill ConsideredLive At Total Refreshment Center – Ill Considered 4 ... LP
Ill Considered (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
This mighty quartet always have a fantastically live sound on their studio albums already – but in a concert setting, they seem to bristle even more with spontaneous creative energy – as you'll no doubt discover just a few minutes into the record! As you've no doubt read on these pages, we totally love these guys – and they're one of the most important bands currently setting the London jazz scene on fire – but with a vibe that will also stay strong in our ears for years to come – thanks to a soulful, spirit drenched blend of electric bass, drums, and percussion – all topped with tremendous work on tenor from Idris Rahman – a player whose raspy sense of soul puts him right up there with some of our 70s favorites from the spiritual scene. Yet these guys are never in an easy spiritual mode, either – as the rhythms and progressions are often very fresh, and very much their own – on titles that include "Djinn", "Delusion", "Upstart", "Sunflower", "Nada Brahma", and "Long Way Home". The set has Jafrosax mixing keyboards, beats, and a bit of sax with some great guest vocals from Vikter Duplaix, Yukimi Nagano, Gagle, Sonya Rogers, and others – a style that shifts from instrumental to lyrical modes with a fluid, spacious feel – picking up a lot of London vibes along the way, and exploding with a righteous 21st Century soul feel that's really great! Titles include "In The Morning", "Wait & See", "Hi Tech Jazz", "Free", "Room In Your Heart", "Going To The Sky", "Drawn 2 U", "Rollin", and "Shin Ku Kan" – plus bonus remixes "Drawn 2 U (Studio Apartment rmx)" and "In The Morning (Faze Action Present Orto rmx)". Work/Sony (UK), 1996. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A mindblower from Jamiroquai – the album that really broke them out of the box, thanks to an increasingly complicated sense of rhythm! For the set, Jay and the group pulled up some of the more dynamic sounds from the London underground, and wove them together with their increasingly great songwriting – coming up with tunes that played beautifully on the dancefloor, yet also offered deeper listening than on previous Jamiroquai efforts! There's still some great 70s elements here, but there's also a more cosmic, righteous vibe too – a hint at spacey London to come, but sent home with a bit more polish here. Titles include "Virtual Insanity", "Cosmic Girl", "Everyday", "Alright", "High Times", "Travelling Without Moving", "Spend A Lifetime", "Use The Force", and "Didjital Vibrations". The Art Ensemble team of Jarman and Moye join with South African bass legend Johnny Dyani in this fantastic set of tracks that's easily some of the best work any of the players recorded during the 70s! The album's got all the free interplay of the classic Art Ensemble work, with some of the edge that Dyani and fellow Blue Notes were bringing to their work in London during the early 70s – wrapped up in a spirituality that unifies the disparate instrumentation and moods of the records. Titles include "Ginger Song", "Black Paladins", "Ode to Wilbur Ware", and "Mama Marimba" – as well as a great reworking of Kalaparusha's "Humility In The Light Of The Creator". LP, Vinyl record album

JK GroupYoung Ones ... LP
La Sape (Australia), 2020. New Copy ... $21.99
A young group, but one who've got some mighty nice energy – a mix of live rhythms on bass and drums, with sweet keyboard lines, saxophone leads, and just a touch of electronics – all in a mode that's got a similar blend of classic styles and contemporary elements as we'd find in work from the London scene of late! Josh Kelly handles the reeds and electronics, and he's got a great balance with the Rhodes and piano of Lewis Moody – both players who find a way to bring plenty of jazz elements to the pulsating, jumping rhythms of Ziggy Zeitgeist on drums and Matt Hayes on bass. Tracks vary in length, which is nice – and the whole thing has a vibe of younger artists who were maybe raised in a more programmed world, then found a way to break out into jazz – on titles that include "Young One", "Seeds", "Jazz Muggle", "Ciggie Chats", "Pender Street", "Much Love", "Jazz Trip", and "Lennie". The set brings together some of Jones and Lofty's best production efforts – including a lot of singles that have slid out of circulation, and a heck of a lot of tracks that are showing up on CD here for the first time. The group's a trio, with Jones on drums, Gene Perla on bass, and Jan Hammer on drums – and Elvin may be the leader of the set, but the real strength of the album belongs to the record's tight bass work by the great Perla – strong-voiced and soulful, and doing a good job here of keeping both Jones and Hammer focused on the groove of the tunes – as Hammer's keyboards spin out with lots of sweet cosmic touches! Equinox (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
The story of Mark Murphy – one of our favorite jazz singers of all time – written by Peter Jones, also a jazz singer himself! Jones is London-based, and as such, does a really great job of capturing the ongoing enthusiasm and excitement about Murphy's career that was always a big part of his overseas audience – one who not only supported him strongly when the US market had begun to wane, but also gave Mark the kind of energy to keep on staying creative, even to the final years of his long career! The book's full of history about Murphy we never knew before –including many personal details, and great appreciation of his music from both a live and recorded perspective. There's also a great discography at the end, which includes some of Murphy's important collaborations and appearances on other folks' records – and the hardcover book is 247 pages, with some black and white images. ✨✧ Ronnie JonesSatisfy My Soul – The Complete Recordings 1964 to 1968 ... CD
Decca/RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Great work from soul singer Ronnie Jones – an artist who was born in the US, but cut all of this work in the swinging London scene of the 60s – where he was obviously a very big addition to the mod scene! Ronnie's got a voice that's capable of a great range when needed, but which can also stick to a tightly soulful groove too – a match of modes that has him swinging between Ray Charles moments some times, and early Gene McDaniels at others – but all with backing by the sort of combo featured on the cover, which means that there's a bit of a British bluesy current to the music as well. The whole thing's wonderful – a stunning discovery of a singer who should have had an equally big impact on these shores, and who was undeniably a precursor to soulful Brit acts to come. Titles include "Satisfy My Soul", "My Daily Souvenir", "I Need Your Loving", "My Love", "Let's Pin A Rose On You", "It's All Over", "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is", "You're Looking Good", and "Mama Come On Home".
