A really unusual collection, and one that really captures a key musical moment in the London scene – a time when all sorts of underground activity was happening on the rave scene, but people didn't have the world of cell phones and internet to connect! So instead, folks got news out about these less-than-legal happenings by tapping into the mainstream – often with posters and flyers, but also through radio advertisements that would pop up often on pirate radio – often buried in some sort of mix of house cuts or jungle tracks! You'll hear plenty of those on here, but served up with these spoken ads that sneak in and tell about all sorts of events – almost three dozen of them, all with a blaring sense of fidelity that really takes us back to a time when radio was the most important way we found out about new and underground sounds. Unity Sounds was one of the top, if not the top sound system in London throughout the 80s, and like so many Jamaican greats, went on to start cutting their own rhythms. Seminal work from Bloodstone – an album that may be the group's best-remembered effort, and for good reason too! The album sets a whole new standard for harmony soul in the 70s – one that's tighter than some of the east coast groups, yet never too slick or polished – kind of a slow-building style that's filled with warmth, but has some trippier elements on the funky cuts too – a really great mashing of styles that instantly set Bloodstone apart from their contemporaries! At one level, the group seem to channel the fragile sounds of The Moments/Whatnauts – but at another, they pick up the heavier vibe of the Norman Whitfield-produced groups – with lots of bass at the bottom, and some psych soul production. The wonderful voice of Marianne Faithfull in all its 60s glory – set up here with sublime arrangements from Mike Leander, in a style that's unlike just about anything else we can think of! Marianne's got a bit of a trill – as you might hear in female folk singers of the decade – but the overall presentation is something completely different altogether – kind of a dark recasting of the usual pop modes you might hear from Leander, with all these blue undertones and weird intonations that kind of point the way towards moodier female singers to come at the end of the 60s – but still with enough ties to the mainstream to make Faithfull's music even more powerful!
