John Barry/Joel McNeely & London Symphony OrchestraBody Heat – Expanded Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Heat, 1989. Used ... $9.99
A really wonderful later score from John Barry – and key proof of the maturity he really hit in his music during the 80s! There's a style here that goes way beyond most of his soundtracks of the 60s – and even of the 70s – a depth of feeling and jazzy approach that's almost like some of the best vintage work by Johnny Mandel! 31 tracks in all. Julie LondonFor The Night People (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Liberty (Japan), 1966. Used ... $24.99
Mature, mellow, and totally wonderful – clear proof that Julie London was still making great music well into the 60s! The album's got a simple, unassuming charm – very much in the late nite mode you'd guess from the title, with spare backings from Don Bagley that often have a key guitar line in the mix – working along with London's vocals in the same style as the mid 50s – but with a different feel overall – a bit more mature and world-wise, which makes for a perfect fit for tunes that include "I Got It Bad", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Am I Blue", "I'll Never Smile Again", "Can't Get Out Of This Mood", and "When The Sun Comes Out". ✨✧ Julie LondonEnd Of The World/Nice Girls Don't Stay For Breakfast ... CD
EMI/Capitol, 1963/1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 great ones from Julie London – back to back on one CD! The End Of The World follows nicely from Julie's interpretation of the big pop hit of the same name – in territory that's sad and dreamy, but in a different way than her earlier albums on Liberty. There's a nicely boozy quality here to some of the tunes – a more mature mode that's emphasized by Ernie Freeman's backings – which are full, but gentle, and prop up Julie's singing in just the right places. Titles include "The Days Of Wine & Roses", "Our Day Will Come", "Call Me Irresponsible", "I Remember You", "My Coloring Book", "The End Of The World", "Chances Are", and "Desafinado". In Nice Girls Don't Stay For Breakfast, she's very much in the best sultry territory of her earlier years! This time around, Don Bagley's turned in some near-perfect arrangements that really bring back the London sound of the late 50s – very spare, slow-moving backdrops that are heavy on jazz, and also feature nice use of guitar – an instrument that's always worked well for Julie. Titles include the excellent "Nice Girls Don't Stay For Breakfast" – plus "I've Got A Crush On You", "There Will Never Be Another You", "I Surrender Dear", "Give A Little Whistle", "Baby Won't You Please Come Home", and the very odd "Mickey Mouse March". Julie London slinks her way through a batch of tracks that range from sexy to groovy to just plain goofy! This 22 track set brings together a nice amount of stuff that's currently hard-to-find on CD, including many gems from her Liberty years. Titles include "Girl Talk", "Black Coffee", "Night Life", "Blues In the Night", "I Must Have That Man", "Wives & Lovers", "Daddy", "Watermelon Man", "Go Slow", and "Come On-A My House"! CD

✨✧ Julie LondonAround Midnight (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Liberty (Japan), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Around Midnight's just about the best time to listen to Julie London – especially given her sultry late nite style of singing! This album's one that definitely follows in that mode – setting Julie's vocals to backings by Dick Reynolds – a bit fuller than some of her earliest Liberty albums, but still quite moody, and very much in the best spirit of the album's songs of adult love and loss. The song choices are especially great too – with some key mid-century classics that include "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning", "Lush Life", "Lonely Night In Paris", "Something Cool", and "You & The Night & The Music". All that – and a great cover that has Julie posing as the hands of a clock! CD

John Barry/Elizabeth TaylorElizabeth Taylor In London ... CD
El (UK), 1963. Used ... $14.99
A weird little record from John Barry – the soundtrack to a 1963 television special recorded by Elizabeth Taylor at the height of her early popularity, and featuring Taylor reciting a variety of poems and speeches over music by Barry! There's a relatively high concept feel to the album – as Barry's backings are fairly string-laden and serious, penned to match the mood of Taylor's presentation of material written by William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, William Pitt, Winston Churchill, and Queen Victoria. And although Taylor speaks on about half the record, the best tracks here are actually the instrumental ones – which have more of the depth of Barry's serious soundtrack work from the time, and manage to have their own sense of presence apart from the star quality of Liz on the set. Arrangements are by Johnnie Spence, and titles include "Elizabeth", "London Theme Jazz Waltz", "Queen Elizabeth At Tilbury", "Queen Victoria", "English Garden", "The Fire Of London", "Lovers & Browning", and "London At Dawn". CD

✨✧ ClashLondon Calling (Legacy Edition)(2CD & DVD) ... CD
Epic, Late 70s. Used 2CD & DVD ... Just Sold Out!
Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". CD

Enja (Germany), 1989. Used ... $3.99
Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin and bop modes that's always kept fresh through his creative energies! Slide Hampton's on trombone – and also wrote most of the arrangements – and other players include Arturo Sandoval on trumpet, Paquito D'Rivera on reeds, James Moody on sax and flute, Airto on percussion, and Danilo Perez on vocals – and Flora Purim also joins the group on vocals for a few numbers. Titles include "Kush", "Tanga", "Dizzy Shells", "Night In Tunisia", "Tin Tin Deo", "Seresta", and "Samba For Carmen". CD

The glorious return of Os Mutantes – a recent live performance that marks the group's first new album in many many years! The show was recorded before a very enthusiastic audience in London – at a time when the city was in the throes of a recent new wave of interest in Tropicalia – clearly the inspiration for the group's performance here, which is heavy on work from their best years! The lineup features Zelia Duncan in place of Rita Lee on vocals – alongside founders Arnaldo Baptista and Sergio Dias – and the overall sound is pretty great, with some very focused and full-on guitar work throughout. Titles include "Don Quixote", "Ave Gengis Khan", "Tecnicolor", "Virgina", "Cantor De Mambo", "Baby", "El Justiciero", "Balada Do Louco", and "Ave Lucifer". CD

M&I (Japan), 1980. Used ... $24.99
Late live work from Art Pepper, but a nicely sharp set that shows he was really at the height of his powers during these years! The well-recorded performance features some nicely extended tracks – with Art blowing in that open, searching sort of style he picked up so well in the late 70s – a Coltrane-inspired mode, but one that's still kept nicely inside too – but always with a deeper sense of soul in the tone than Pepper ever had before. The group's a quartet, with Milcho Leviev on piano, Bob Magnuson on bass, and Carl Burnett on drums – and titles include "The Summer Knows", "Girl From Ipanema", "Blues of Mine", "Stella By Starlight", and "Cherokee". Harkit (UK), 1965. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
Extremely compelling live work from the great Sonny Rollins – a double-length set that has Rollins blowing on some incredibly long tunes – 3 of which are longer than 20 minutes in length, and really display Sonny's tremendous solo abilities! As with other live in London sets recorded at the Ronnie Scott's Club, backing is by a trio led by pianist Stan Tracey – but Rollins is clearly the real star here, as he dominates all tunes heavily with his inventive tones and phrasing on the tenor. Titles include a 30 minute reading of "Blue N Boogie", plus "Where Are You", "Four", "Sonnymoon For Two", and "I'll Be Seeing You". CD

A legendary live set from the 60s all-stars of Stax Records – a performance in London in the late 60s, as the label follows Motown's lead on taking its big names overseas! The lineup is legendary, and most of the tunes are familiar by the artists, but get nice fresh versions here – sometimes a bit quicker, and sometimes a bit rougher – both of which makes a nice change from the iconic classics. Titles include "Green Onions" by Booker T & The MGs, "Philly Dog" by The Mark-Keys, "Knock On Wood" and "If I Had A Hammer" by Eddie Floyd, "Hold On I'm Comin" and "I Take What I Want" by Sam & Dave, "Shake" by Otis Redding, and "Yesterday" by Carla Thomas. ✨✧ Nathan DavisLondon By Night (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Overlooked genius from reedman Nathan Davis – a later session that's a bit more straight ahead than some of his 70s work, and a date that really gets back to some of the best soulful energy of his records from the 60s! Davis is recorded here in very sympathetic company – players who share some of the best energies he picked up on the expatriate scene during his famous time overseas – Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Al Leavitt on drums! There's an easygoing soul jazz groove to the whole set, with a slight touch of modernism – and in addition to tenor, Davis also plays some wonderful soprano sax – handling the horn with stretched-out soulfulness that makes him one of the undisputed masters of the instrument. Titles include "Noite Em Leblon", "Rio De Janeiro", "Dr Bu", "London By Night", and "Shades". CD

✨✧ HawkwindSpace Ritual – Alive In Liverpool & London (50th anniversary mix) ... CD
United Artists/Atomhenge (UK), 1973. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal set from Hawkwind – a record that virtually defines the term "space rock", and which went on to create a whole genre unto itself! The live setting is perfect for the group – as they open up on long tracks that blend together odd touches, sci fi elements, and some mighty heavy rock lines too – all with some trippy vocals that really send things over the top! Lemmy's a mad genius at this point – and the record's got a ballsy power that's quite different from more prog-based groups who travel down similar paths, but never with ferocity like this. Titles include "Earth Calling", "Born To Go", "Down Through The Night", "The Awakening", "Upside Down", "10 Seconds Of Forever", "Brainstorm", "Seven By Seven", "Sonic Attack", Welcome To The Future", "You Shouldn't Do That", "Time We Left This World Today", and "Master Of The Universe". Steeplechase (Denmark), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A soulful set from trumpeter Marcus Printup – a player who seems to just get better and better with each new recording! The set's cut in some especially great company – reedman Ted Nash on tenor and flute and pianist Eric Reed – both players who bring a depth of feeling to the record that's really appreciated, and accompany Printup's strong lead with a bold sort of energy. The horn interplay is especially great – but then again, so are the solos – and there's a mix of modern and soulful energy going on here that almost reminds us of Joe Henderson at his 60s best – no surprise as the record features versions of Henderson's "Recorda-Me" and "A Shade Of Jade". Other tracks include "Dindi", "Eighty One", "Blue In Green", "Una Mujer Elegante", "London Lullaby", and "Tears Inside". CD

A really great collection of work that sets the scene for the London Underground of the 60s – that heady cultural scene that was about to burst forth and shower the world with a huge range of new music that would influence listeners for decades to come! This package isn't that music – in that most of the artists here are American, mixed with contributions from a few key Brit talents too – and the whole thing works together to showcase the sorts of sounds that were a bit inspiration on the generation that would then inspire many others to come – a mad mix of modern jazz, electronic music, avant classical, groovy vocal, and even some compelling beat/poetry recordings too – all packaged together in an overstuffed 3CD set that makes for a hell of a journey in music! Conductor Antal Dorati earned his reputation on a range of vivid, colorful recordings with the Minneapolis Symphony – but he could also be a committed modernist when he wanted, as you'll hear on this fantastic set with the London Symphony from 1962! The works here represent some of the sharpest new currents for orchestra in the early 20th century – and Dorati responds wonderful to the challenges, which include as much energy in the rhythms as in the tonal colors. Performances include "Five Pieces For Orchestra (Op 16)" by Schoenberg, "Five Pieces For Orchestra (Op 10)" by Webern, and "Three Pieces For Orchestra (Op 6)" by Berg. CD

✨✧ Clash5 Studio Album Box Set (Clash/Give Em Enough Rope/London Calling/Sandinista!/Combat Rock) (8 CD set) ... CD
Sony, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 8 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous little package of music – and way more than you might expect, given that two of the five albums are actually multi-record sets! The whole thing's a treasure all the way through – and features the first five (and five best) records by The Clash – their landmark self-titled debut, with the great UK track list; the brilliant follow-up Give Em Enough Rope; the blistering London Calling double set; the game-changing, genre-stepping Sandinista (originally a 3LP set); and the still-great Combat Rock – maybe the last album to still have all the best Clash elements still in place! Each record comes in a cool little LP sleeve cover – and the box also features a bonus Clash stencil too! CD

✨✧ ClashLondon Calling ... CD
Epic, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mercury, 1962/1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most enigmatic cellists of the 20th Century – heard here on a keynote recording of Dvorak's famous Cello Concerto In B Minor! Janos Starker is one of our all-time favorites on his instrument – a player who can be subtle when needed, but also able to hit the vivid flights of color you might be more likely to hear from a violinist – especially in the company of Antal Dorati, who spurs the London Symphony on with some especially wonderful elements in the woodwinds. Starker hits some darker notes on Bruch's Kol Nidrei – which takes on an especially rich sound here in the hands of Dorati. CD

✨✧ Marvin GayeLive At the London Palladium ... CD
Motown, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
This is the second of two live albums that Marvin Gaye cut during the 70s – and in many ways, it's the better one! The record features three sides of work recorded live at the London Palladium – mostly in these swirling medleys that are introduced by Marvin in a very soulful mode, then swing into well-arranged combinations of classic tunes with some excellent instrumentation. The album features a few straight cuts like "Since I Had You", "Let's Get It On", "Trouble Man", and "Come Get To This" – but the medleys are great, too, especially the second one, which features kind of a mini version of the album What's Going On! But then, even after all that, comes a slamming studio track – the extended funky groover "Got To Give It Up", which took up all of side four on the original LP, and has some great keyboards by Marvin and cool rhythm work by Jack Ashford. All very funky, and Marvin's big bid at a club cut – one that worked pretty darn well! CD

✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz – Live In London ... CD
Harkit (UK), 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pretty sweet set from Stan – recorded in London, at Ronnie Scott's, during his ultra-hip year of 1964! At the time, Stan was moving past the bossa format of earlier Verve sides – a style that was currently in the record racks representing the bulk of his work – and in live sets, he was opening up a lot more, stretching into Sweet Rain territory with a really amazing tone and approach to his solos. This set has Stan working with a hip Brit backing section – with the great Stan Tracey on piano, crafting some clever lines that make the album a lot stronger than a "famous soloist with guest rhythm section" album, really standing up to Stan's excellent album of the same year recorded with Gary Burton. Titles include Burton's "Six Nix Quix Fix", plus "Autumn Leaves", "Manha De Carnaval", "Little Girl Blue", and "Getz Blues 1". CD

✨✧ Yusef LateefLive In London ... CD
Harkit (UK), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful live set from Yusef Lateef – recorded in the UK on a rare New Year's Eve show in 1966, at a time when Lateef was at the height of his early powers! The session features Yusef as the soloist fronting a British rhythm trio made up of Stan Tracey on piano, Rick Laird on bass, and Bill Eyden on drums – in a style that's a bit more soul jazz oriented than some of Lateef's more exotic recordings of earlier years, similar to some of the straighter jazz on his Prestige albums. The tracks on the set are nice and long, and include a number of strong originals that really give Yusef plenty of room to solo nicely – using flute, oboe, and argol, in addition to tenor. Titles include "Number Seven", "Ask The Post", "New Year Blues", "Imagination", and "Yusef's Mood". CD

✨✧ David MurrayLondon Concert ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous early recording from David Murray – recorded in London (as you'd guess by the title), but with all the best spirit of his early loft jazz sides! There's a tightness here that's missing from some of Murray's other albums of the period – a sense of soulful swing that only seems to make the album open up even more, and which allows for some incredibly rhythmic solo work from Murray. We love this one to death, and would easily rank it as one of our favorite David Murray recordings ever – and would also say that the album's noteworthy for some great work from Butch Morris on cornet and Curtis Clark on piano – working in a quintet with Brian Smith on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. Titles include "Jas Van", "Secret Of The Circle", "Murray's Steps", and "Cancion De Amor En Espanol" – and the CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Nairobi" and "Flowers For Albert". CD

DRG, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
Late work by jazz drum giant Buddy Rich – captured in a surprisingly energetic, firey, and sometimes funky mode at Ronnie Scott's Club in 1980! Buddy really pulled off some bright, buoyant, funk influenced work in the 70s and this set finds him at the tail end of that groove – playing with a pretty big group that includes Ernie Vantrease on piano, Wayne Pedziwiatr on bass, Ando Fusco, Jack Leibowitz, Steave Marcus and Kenny Hitchcock on saxes, Bob Coassin on lead trumpet, Roger Homefield on lead trombone, and others. Titles include "Intro/Beulah Witch", "Grand Concourse", "Blues A La 88", "Saturday Night", "Slow Funk" and the epic, 15+ minute closer "Good News". CD

Harkit (UK), 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A second set of tracks from Sonny Rollins' early 1965 stay at the Ronnie Scott Club in London – one that features some wonderfully angular backing from the Stan Tracey Trio! Tracey's got a nicely modern approach to the keys here – one with hints of Monk and Herbie Nichols, and which provides Rollins for an unusual setting for the time – especially considering his other live dates with piano-less groups, or his studio work for RCA during the period. Tracks are long, with a real focus on Sonny's improvisation over the space of the tunes – and titles include "Night & Day", "Flamingo", "Nutty", "A Foggy Day", and "Autumn Nocturne". CD

Honest Jons (UK), Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The 4th entry in the amazing London Is The Place For Me – a collection of incredible work from the postwar, post-colonial years in the UK! As with other volumes, there's an array of Caribbean and African influences at work here – often highly rhythmic and performed with lots of percussion, but also served up in ways that has the original modes coming into contact with more contemporary UK styles! Most of the work here was recorded in London, but overflowing with global styles that include mentos, high life, calypso, Latin, and even a bit of jazz – played by an array of artists who all found new means of expression in the capital. Titles include "Mambo Indio" by Shake Keane, "Alphonso In Town" by Lord Kitchener, "Give Her The No 1" by Eric Hayden, "Khauleza" by Dorothy Masuka, "Chicken & Rice" by Young Tiger, "Egyptian Bint Al Cha Cha" by Ginger Johnson, "Don't You Go Away" by Cab Kaye, "Highlife Piccadilly" by The African Messengers, "Darling Don't Say No" by Nat Akins, "African Jazz Cha Cha" by Ginger Johnson, "Piccadilly Folk" by Lord Kitchener, and "Ilu Oyinbo Dara" by Victor Coker. ✨✧ VariousNight Comes Down – 60s British Mod, R&B, Freakbeat, & Swinging London Nuggets (3CD set) ... CD
RPM (UK), Mid 60s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The British mod scene of the 60s was drinking up a very heady brew of American jazz, soul, and R&B – then doing a great job of turning it into their own sort of music, as you'll hear on this set! Most of the numbers here are English, but could easily go head-to-head with the most romping tunes on American jukeboxes at the time – particularly the soulful sort of grooves that were flowing out of northern cities like Detroit, Chicago, and New York! Yet there's also something special going on here, too – as the groups aren't just slavishly soulful, but also taking some chances, too – really starting to open up their sound, but not at the level from the more progressive years – just finding the right sort of inspiration, then getting confident enough to give things their own spin. The set list is amazing – very much on a par with the other superb 3CD collections of this nature from RPM – and titles include "Work Song" by James Royal, "Night Comes Down" by Mickey Finn, "What's Her Name" by Guy Darnell, "My Love" by Ronnie Jones, "Taboo Man" by Alexis Kroner, "Mama" by Litz Roza, "Don't That Beat Them All" by Just Five, "Fire In The City" by The Deviants, "Violin Shop" by The Alan Bown, "Elevator" by Grapefruit, "Peacock Dress" by Sun Dragon, "The Eagle Flies On Friday" by The Exceptions, "Girl On A Motorcycle" by British Lion Orchestra, and lots lots more! 87 tracks in all. ✨✧ Jerry GoldsmithRio Conchos – Jerry Goldsmith/London Symphony Orchestra ... CD
Intrada, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great Jerry Goldsmith score from the mid 60s – penned for a western, but with a sensitivity that's much more like some of his best dramatic work of the time! There's some wonderful use of woodwinds and strings in the lineup – often with the sense of mature color and tone that Jerry brought to thoughtful crime scores, or some of his more adult soundtracks – including those for well-penned TV dramas. There's some acoustic guitar to provide the right western flair at times – but overall, the style is a nice change from the usual – although with Goldsmith, things are always a cut above the usual too! Titles include "The Fuse", "The Prisoner", "Smoke Signals", "Cantina 1 & 2", "A Change Of Luck", "Unlucky Lover", "River Crossing", and "Special Delivery". CD
