Flying LotusFlamagra ... CD
Warp, 2019. Used ... $6.99 8.99
Fantastic sounds from Flying Lotus – an artist who just keeps on pushing past any conventional expectations, to a point where his music is almost a genre unto itself! The record's got this very tripped-out sort of vibe – very much in keeping with the image on the cover – and while many others are exploring this territory of late, few ever even get close to the right sort of mix that's going on here – subtle elements of soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, and maybe a million other influences – all flowing through the double-length space of the set, as it Flying Lotus redefines the sound of soul in the modern age. The set's got guest work from Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, David Lynch, George Clinton, Anderson Paak, Little Dragon, Solange, and others – and titles include "Post Requisite", "Takashi", "Spontaneous", "More", "Burning Down The House", "Actually Virtual", "Find Your Own Way Home", "The Climb", "Debbie Is Depressed", "Black BAloons Reprise", and "Land Of Honey". ✨✧ VariousGilles Peterson Worldwide – A Celebration Of His Syndicated Radio Show ... CD
BBE (UK), 1990s/2000s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant collection of spacey soul, funk, hip hop from Gilles Peterson – a well chosen set of modern classic, many of which originally premiered on his incomparable Gilles Peterson Worldwide radio show! The stylistic breadth is as great as the material is – and it's also amazing to see so many great artists and tracks in one place that in many cases first came to our attention thanks to Gilles! It ranges from the tripped out sound tapestries of Cinematic Orchestra, the boundless creativity of Jay Dee, spacey grooves from Sa-Ra Vikter Duplaix and Spacek, the proud Afro Funk Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80, blunt funk hip hop from Madlb/Quasimoto, deeper gems from stars such as Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse and Jill Scott and more. A treasure trove of material from the 90s onward – chosen by Gilles Peterson himself! 27 tracks on the 2CD version: "All Things To All Men" by Cinematic Orchestra feat Roots Manuva, "Let's Ride" by Q-Tip, "Take The Box" by by Amy Winehouse, "Manhood" by Vikter Duplaix, "Just A Lil' Lovin" by Outlines, "Wesley Music" by RSL, "Many Things" by Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80, "La Ritournelle" by Sebastien Tellier, "Too Fly" by Dwele, "Dollar" by Steve Spacek, "Rosebuds" by Sa-Ra, ""Emotions" by Benga, "Twice" by Little Dragon, "1 Thing" by Amerie, "Tides" by Nitin Sawhney and more. Percy FaithCorazon ... LP
Columbia, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Sweet 70s grooves from Percy Faith – a snoozer of an arranger in the 60s, but a talent who picked up a lot for us in the 70s! The album features some strong tracks in which Percy mixes strings and easy instrumentation with electric bass and some nice drum work by Hal Blaine or Earl Palmer – creating tunes that at once have a glossy sweep, but also a nice little bounce that actually makes for some nicely funky moments that sparkle with a soundtrack feel. Some tunes are easy – but there's some really nice ones on here, like Percy's cover of Freddie Hubbard's "First Light", or versions of "Pata Pata", "Enter The Dragon", "Corazon", and "Crunchy Granola Suite"! ✨✧ King Jammy & OthersKing Jammy's – Selector's Choice Vol 3 ... CD
Jammy's/VP, Early/Mid 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
We can't think of a better word to describe this selection than choice, as it bumps like jeep with a broken suspension on dirt road in the Jamaican countryside! This is part three of a four part series collecting the 80s output Lloyd King Jammy James, the man who elevated the Casio from musical toy to a sound bwoy killing beat machine! An essential musical portrait of the man who virtually single handedly transformed the Dancehall era and influenced the sound of an entire generation of Jamaican music, with the tracks arranged by rhythm. This volume features 40 cuts on 2 discs, including "Jump Up", "No Where Better Than Yard" and "Kill Dem Wid It" by Admiral Bailey, "Bam Bam" by Tiger, "Cassanova" by Frankie Paul, "Respect Due" by Little Twitch, "Wake Up" by Sister Charmaine, "Great Ambition" by Lt Stitchie, "I'm A Don" by Pinchers, "Must Haffi Get It" by Horace Andy, "Be Mine Tonight" by Admiral Tibet, "Gimme No Bun" by Little John, 'Get Up Stand Up And Rock" by Shabba Ranks, "DJ A Look Fi Mi" by Lecturer, "Duck Dance" by Red Dragon, "Bounce" by Flourgon, "Bad Bad Chake" by Chaka Demus, "Dibbi Dibbi Girl" by Daddy Lizard, "More Reality" by Ninja Man, "Duck Riddim" by Steely & Clevie and "Conquer Me" by Don Angelo. Sonny RollinsSt Thomas – Sonny Rollins Trio In Stockholm 1959 ... LP
Dragon (Sweden), 1959. Near Mint- ... $39.99
An amazing live performance from Sonny Rollins – one we'd rank right up there with his legendary Village Vanguard recordings on Blue Note – thanks to its stripped-down trio presentation, and its ability to let Rollins open up in some wonderfully modern tones! As with the Vanguard sides, these tracks feature a superb trio – Henry Grimes on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – both wonderfully loose players, at the start of a budding legacy of creativity – and well-matched with Rollins, whose really changing his sound and style, and using the open space of the performance to move in directions that nobody would have expected at the start of the decade. Most tracks are standards, but really transformed – and titles include "Paul's Pal", "St Thomas", "There Will Never Be Another You", "Stay As Sweet As You Are", "How High The Moon", "Oleo", and "I've Told Every Little Star". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s issue.)

VariousJ Jazz 2 – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969 to 1983 (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and the titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more. 14 tracks on 3LPs. LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl includes obi, notes in the gatefold, and insert card.)
