✨✧ Link WrayLink Wray Rumble (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Polydor/Big Pink (South Korea), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A really cool 70s album from the great Link Wray – done at the time when he was reinventing himself, and changing from a damn great instrumental guitarist to a singer as well – one with a much bolder presence in the limelight than ever before! Wray serves up some fantastic electric solos here, and sings a fair bit too – and the record has some connection to his earlier self-titled set on Polydor, but was recorded at Wally Heider's in San Francisco – instead of Link's three-track shack – which makes for a richer vibe overall! There's plenty of great help on the session – all-star work from Boz Scaggs on guitar, Pete Escovedo on congas, and Lenny Pickett on tenor – and Wray may well be at the apex of his 70s confidence in the lead, as you'll hear on titles that include "It Was A Bad Scene", "Good Time Joe", "Walkin/Bulldog", "I Got To Ramble", "We Said I Do", "Step This Way", "Super 88", and "She's That Kind Of Woman". ✨✧ VariousBirth Of Surf ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the evolution of surf music – one filled with a variety of key early examples of the genre! Surf music didn't just step out of the waves in Malibu one day in 1963 – it was a slow-building genre that grew out of rock and roll instrumental work of the late 50s – as certain trends and styles started to take hold more than others, in an ever-rolling wave of guitar-based sound that eventually crashed down big on the music scene a few years later! The package features some great twanging instrumentals that we might not first have thought to link to surf – but which here make perfect sense as precursors, and really point the way towards a range of early 60s instrumentals – both obscure and famous. The package features a whopping 26 tracks in all – supported by great Ace-style notes – with titles that include "Crossfire" by Johnny & The Hurricanes, "Moon Dawg" by The Gamblers, "Mr Moto" by The Belairs, "Jack The Ripper" by Link Wray, "El Toro" by The Surfmen, "Miserlou" by Dick Dale, "Wipe Out" by The Surfaris, "Bulldog" by The Fireballs, "Squad Car" by Eddie & The Showmen, "Fiberglass Jungle" by The Crossfires, "Gypsy Surfer" by The Avantis, and "Penetration" by The Pyramids. ✨✧ VariousDestination Jurassic Land – 33 Artifacts From Times Before Christ ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A cool collection of caveman-themed rockers from the glory days of the 7" single – music that's very much in the same mad spirit as the monster rock records of the time – and which is served up here in a similar blend of echoey instrumentals, guitar-heavy groovers, and a mix of hard rockers and novelty numbers too! The package is plenty playful, and you'll definitely recognize a few names here from the world of monster rock too – although the mix of material is also pretty darn fresh, too – and really opens up a whole new sort of territory from these glory days of American popular music. Titles include "Brontosaurus Walk" by Buddy Merrill, "Caveman" by Tommy Roe & The Satins, "McDonald's Cave" by Piltdown Men, "Be A Cave Man" by The Avengers, "Dinosaur" by Link Wray, "Caveman" by Terry Fell, "Volcano Rock" by Tommy Mercer & The McBrides, "Cave Man Rock" by The Majestics, "The Cave (parts 1 & 2)" by Gary Spider Webb, and "Cave Man Love" by Space Man With The Rockets. 33 tracks in all – and a very nice package!
