James Brandon LewisCode Of Being ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Tenorist James Brandon Lewis has really been on fire in recent years – always opening up new doors in his music, and surprising us with each new record, which seems to have a slightly different flavor that further expands his palette of sound! Here, Lewis presents some beautiful original compositions with a group that has amazingly fluid drum work from the great Chad Taylor, lovely colors on piano from Aruan Ortiz, and these rollingly soulful basslines from Brad Jones – all players who are seamlessly tied to Lewis tenor, as the four paint these really wonderful pictures in sound. The approach is more structured than some of Lewis' other recordings, but at a level that's still filled with bursts of personal expression throughout – on titles that include "Every Atom Glows", "Archimedean", "Resonance", "Per 5", "Tessera", and "Code Of Being". ✨✧ Jimmy LewisTotally Involved (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hotlanta/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest albums of southern soul from the 70s – a set we'd put right up there next to the Soul Children albums on Stax, or the new sound that was brewing up down at Malaco! Jimmy Lewis is an artist who never fully got his due – but he wrote and produced the whole set, at a level that matches his talents with underground contemporaries like Sam Dees or George Jackson – as Jimmy's got an equally great sound, with a mix of emotive currents and more mature expression. The songwriting and overall sound is impeccable – a treasure through and through – and titles include "It Ain't What's On The Woman", "Is That Any Way To Treat A Lady", "That Won't Stop Me From Loving You", "Thank You", "There Ain't Man That Can't Be Caught", "Help Me Understand You", and "Go On Live Your Life". CD features four bonus tracks – "When You Get A Little Give A Little", "Three Into Two Won't Go", "Careful Man", and "She's Gone". CD

✨✧ James Brandon LewisMolecular Systematic Music – Live ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2022. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An album that feels even more spiritual and soulful than anything we've heard before from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – and that's really saying a lot, given the records he's given us before! There's a lean, open energy to the record – a laidback group that features some especially nice drum work from Chad Taylor, who we always love in such a setting – alongside Aruan Ortiz on piano and Brad Jones on bass – all players who clearly recognize that Lewis needs plenty of space to stretch out, and make these magical notes on his instrument – voicing things in a way that's wonderfully fresh – never too far out, but always with an edge – a great reminder that in the right hands, the tenor continues to be one of the strongest modes of individual expression in jazz. Titles include "A Lotus Speaks", "Of First Importance", "Helix", "An Anguish Departed", "Cesaire", and "Neosho". CD

✨✧ Ramsey LewisSun Goddess – The Best Of Ramsey Lewis ... CD
Columbia/Jazz FM (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A mighty nice collection of work from the second chapter in the career of piano legend Ramsey Lewis – work that he recorded for Columbia Records in the 70s and 80s, after his initial run at Chess – and with a sound that's even groovier and more soulful than before! Ramsey in the 70s was a many of many talents and expressions – still great on acoustic piano, but also a hell of a player on Fender Rhodes, which he uses often on a lot of these cuts – and also tied even more strongly than before to Maurice White (his old drummer) and the world of Earth Wind & Fire – who are on board to help Lewis hit some really righteous moments at times. There's also some live material, a bit of soul-styled tracks, and guest work from Nancy Wilson alng the way – and the set features a whopping 32 tracks on 2CDs – with titles that include "Spring High", "Caring For You", "Tambura, "So Much More", "Lynn (live)", "Hot Dawgit", "Paradise", "Expansions", "Sun Goddess", "Sassy Stew (live)", "Whisper Zone", "Camino El Bueno", "All The Way Live", "Intimacy", and "I'll Always Dream About You". ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire/Need Of Love ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". CD

Jackie McLeanLet Freedom Ring To Destination Out – Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Early 1960s. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
Two key albums from a young Jackie McLean – both very early entries in the "new thing" mode of the 60s! First up is Let Freedom Ring a record that features a young Jackie McLean at the height of his powers – really stretching out here, but never going too far out – a perfect balance between his modern bop of previous records, and his groundbreaking "new thing" jazz to come! The group is a relatively straight ahead one – with Walter Davis on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but the tracks are all quite long, and have this really arch sensibility on Jackie's horn – this edge, this cry he didn't have a few years before – easily one of the freshest voices in alto sax at the time, yearning here to break free with new ideas and new modes of expression. The vibe is perfectly balanced – like McLean's classic A Fickle Sonance – and titles include the classic "Melody For Melonae", plus "Rene", "I'll Keep Loving You", and "Omega". Destination Out is a modernist classic from 60s Blue Note! The album's one of Jackie McLean's greatest from the time – and one of his seminal "new thing" sessions cut with young modernists Grachan Moncur III on trombone and Bobby Hutcherson on vibes – both young players who were really finding the sharper edges of their sound at the time! Three of the four long tracks on the record were written by Moncur, and have a similar approach to his own recordings for Blue Note – moody and introspective, in a style that's as concerned with sound and space as it is jazz and rhythm – and Hutcherson's vibes are beyond compare here, with have a sinister metallic quality that he only used briefly in his early career! The whole record's a gem, and one not to pass up! Titles include "Kahlil The Prophet", "Riff Raff", and "Love & Hate". CD

David MurrayMing/Sacred Ground/Lucky Four (3CD set) ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980/1988/2007. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
A trio of albums from the great David Murray! Ming is beautifully arranged work from David Murray – an important early large group recording, one that really helped point the way to some of his later genius! The session features Murray leading an all-star octet that includes Henry Threadgill on alto, Olu Dara on trumpet, Butch Morris on cornet, George Lewis on trombone, Anthony Davis on piano, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Steve McCall on percussion. Tracks are a very hip set of original compositions that display an incredible range of soulful feeling and expression – and which open a door to a whole new chapter of Murray's career. Titles include "Ming", "Dewey's Circle", "Jasvan", "The Fast Life", and "The Hill". Sacred Ground is a beautifully spiritual set that really reminds us of the promise we first heard in his music decades ago! Murray's working here with a lean, soulful ensemble that includes Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – all in a groove that has plenty of sharp edges, but which is also nicely inside – very focused, and with a sense of depth that's really wonderful! All tracks are originals by Murray – penned with the sensitivity of an older soul jazz recording – and two numbers feature lyrics by Ishmael Reed, sung by Cassandra Wilson on guest vocals. Titles include "Sacred Ground", "Transitions", "Family Reunion", "The Prophet Of Doom", "Believe In Love", and "Banished". Lucky Four is a gentler set than some of David Murray's other US dates from the time – but in a really great way that nicely gets at the more sensitive side of his work on tenor and bass clarinet! There's a bit of a hardbop groove to the album, but also a bit more freedom too – a style that never goes that far out, but which reminds us through subtle cues that most of these players have a longer legacy in more avant-oriented work. The group features Dave Burrell on piano, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – and Burrell especially echoes a range of influences here – almost pulling from older eras of jazz in the way that Jaki Byard used to – an approach that's often echoed by Murray in his horn. Titles include "Valley Talk", "Chazz", "As I Woke", "Abel's Blissed Out Blues", "Sharing", and "As I Woke". CD

✨✧ Sonny StittJust In Case You Forgot How Bad He Really Was (32 Jazz pressing) ... CD
32 Jazz, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
A smoking little bop set from Sonny Stitt – recorded live at the Keystone in 1981, as sort of a "summit meeting" of horns – one that features Richie Cole and John Handy in the frontline with Sonny! The rhythm section alone is enough to cook this one up nicely – with Cedar Walton on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the sextet is expanded by Bobby Hutcherson, whose vibes seem to bring an even deeper level of soul to the set. But the main focus here is on the horns – and it's a focus that's well-kept, especially on the longer tunes, which really sparkle in the range of tone and mood expressed. Highlights include an extended "Ballad Medley" and versions of "Wee", "Lover Man", and "Star Eyes". (And by the way, that's "bad", as in "good" – in case you couldn't guess from the title!) CD

Always the master storyteller, Kip Hanrahan turns his unique musical vision to source material from 1001 Arabian Nights – interweaving stories from the text with jazz-based expression, augmented by spoken and vocal passages. Carmen Lundy sings quite a bit on the record – which is a real treat to our ears, as its great to hear her in such a left-field project – and other artists on the set include Don Pullen, Milton Cardona, Mike Cain, Jack Bruce, JT Lewis, and Henry Threadgill. Tracks include "Diente De Oro", "Aziz & Azizah", "Dunya's Nocturnal Realization", "The Hasheater's Tale", "The Angel Charles & The Caravans Of Jinns & Dreams", and "The Jewish Doctor's Tale". CD

McCoy TynerTime For Tyner (non-RVG edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. Used ... $14.99
Brilliant work from groundbreaking pianist McCoy Tyner – an album that has him firmly stepping out of the shadow of his old boss John Coltrane – and really taking off with a new level of spiritual jazz expression that Tyner's scene helped to foster in the 70s! The group on the set is a quartet with Bobby Hutcherson on vibes – and the mixture of Hutcherson's vibes and Tyner's piano is extremely compelling – stretching out in long, rhythmic, modal lines that dance and light the groove no matter what the tune! The rest of the group features Herbie Lewis on bass and Freddie Waits on drums – and titles include the great original compositions "African Village", "May Street", and "Little Madimba". CD

Bobby Watson & HorizonHorizon Reassembled ... CD
Palmetto, 2004. Used ... $2.99
A wonderful return to form for saxophonist Bobby Watson – one of the best albums we've heard from him in years, and a massive regrouping of his legendary Horizon ensemble! Watson first assembled the group back in the 80s – as a vehicle for the tightly-crafted soul jazz he was writing at the time – a fresh sound that brought a new level of joy to jazz expression, and which created some of our favorite jazz records of the period. On this new recording, Watson's fronting a quintet that features Victor Lewis on drums, Terell Stafford on trumpet and flugelhorn, Edward Simon on piano, and Essiet Essiet on bass – all playing a brilliant array of well-chosen tracks that sing and dance with all the joy that jazz has to offer. Titles include "Dark Days", "Xangongo", "Lemoncello", "The Love We Had Yesterday", "Horizon Reassembled", and "Gingerbread Boy". CD

✨✧ Jazz Tribe (Bobby Watson)Everlasting ... CD
Red (Italy), 2009. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bold, beautiful music from the Jazz Tribe of Bobby Watson and Ray Mantilla – proof that the partnership first forged years back can still be the source of some wonderfully soulful music! The album's one of the best we've heard from Bobby in years – almost a return to the simple, expressive quality of his albums as a leader back in the 80s! Part of the album's strength is the bass work of Curtis Lundy, whose presence on a record always seems to add something special – and other group members are great too, and include Jack Walrath on trumpet, Xavier Davis on piano, and Victor Lewis on drums – all nice and tight, yet never uptight, next to the alto sax of Watson and percussion of Mantilla. Tracks include many originals by the group – with titles that include "Pecado Primero", "Hello Albert", "Gesualdo's Tango", "Everlasting", "Eeeyyeess", "El Color De Mi Rythmo", and "Temples Of Gold". ✨✧ John StubblefieldCountin' On The Blues ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
Reedman John Stubblefield made some of his best records as a leader for Enja – and this is definitely one of them! The set has Stubblefield coming across with maturity and focus that you might not have found a few years before – that kind of ebullient, soulful style that some of his best contemporaries were hitting in the late 80s – new modes of expression that were maybe less righteous than previous years, but a lot more powerful in their positive energy and subtle sense of care! John plays both tenor and soprano sax with this easygoing, soulful vibe – and the group also includes Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Mulgrew Miller on piano, Charnett Moffett on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – a well-matched lineup, as all players are at similar points in their musical conceptions. Stubblefield plays a bit of keyboards on one last track, but even that comes across well – with almost a Lonnie Liston Smith vibe – and titles include "Remembrance", "For Those Who Didn't Know", "Montauk", "The Wanderer", and "Going Home". ✨✧ Chris ConnorChris Connor ... CD
Atlantic, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first album in a legendary run of vocal jazz classics on Atlantic Records – and a set that really helped Chris Connor move to a new level of expression in her music! The sound here is much richer than Connor's previous recordings for Bethlehem – and the small combo jazz backings have been replaced by fuller orchestrations by Ralph Burns – done in a cool, edgey sort of way that really pushes Chris into newly sophisticated territory! The sound's on a par with the best June Christy/Pete Rugolo collaborations on Capitol – and the group's filled with some great jazz players, including Zoot Sims, John Lewis, Milt Hinton, and Oscar Pettiford. Titles include "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "My April Heart", "He Was Good to Me", "Where Are You", and "Get Out Of Town". CD
