Laurie AndersonBig Science (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Nonesuch, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.99
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Laurie Anderson/John Giorno/William S BurroughsYou're The Guy I Want To Share My Money With ... LP
Giorno Poetry Systems, 1981. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really wonderful record from a really wonderful time when it seemed like boundaries were really breaking down – not just between musical genres, but between different sides of the art spectrum as well! The record is partly experimental art, but has a crossover appeal to post-punk sensibilities too – thanks both to Anderson's wit, and John Giorno's sense of playful production. Wonderful work from all three artists – and not issued elsewhere. LP, Vinyl record album
(There's some light sleeve marks, and a few clicks on one of the Burroughs stracks – but most of the record is in great shape. Cover has some light wear, but is nice too.)

David Grubbs & Susan HoweConcordance ... LP
Blue Chopsticks, 2021. New Copy ... $21.99 27.99
The fifth album in what's become a surprisingly strong legacy of collaboration – as musician David Grubbs works here alongside poet Susan Howe, providing piano accompaniment to her spoken words! If you know Howe's poetry at all, you'll know that it's unique in both content and structure – and her own reading of it is incredibly illuminating – maybe as striking a vocal performance as Laurie Anderson in a more serious mood, but with a vibe that's completely different, given the content. Grubbs' piano work is wonderful – spacious, and at a level that never seeks to challenge the words, but which illuminates it beautifully with all these little sparks of sound and warmth! Space LadySpace Lady's Greatest Hits ... LP
Mississippi, Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
Really wonderful sounds from the enigmatic Space Lady – an artist who mostly performed on the streets of Boston and San Francisco in the 70s, but who also managed to make the handful of recordings featured in this set! The tunes are wonderfully spare, and surprisingly beautiful – often just Casio keyboards with bits of electronic processing, which is also extended to the vocals as well – which links the keys and lyrics in this spacey style that's completely sublime! At some level, Space Lady feels a bit like a street corner version of Laurie Anderson (who herself played many corners in the early years) – but there's also a more tuneful and naive approach to the music as well, which gives the whole thing a really unique approach. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to 1000 copies.)

VariousTen Commandments Of Rock & Roll – Commandment 4 – Show Affection/Come On & Love Me ... CD
Atomicat, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A searing set of tracks that uphold the commandments of rock and roll – but which might also make you break some of the Lord's commandments as well! The tracks here are all raw, gritty, and grooving – the mix of early rockers, R&B, and other late 50s styles we love from these Atomicat collections – presented without much in the way of notes, but packing plenty in the socking set list of 30 tunes on the CD! Titles include "Laurie Anne" by Glen Glenn, "Don't Burn Me Up" by Ray Ellington, "Mama Doll" by Roy Teo, "Liza Jane" by Dale Hawkins, "Steppin Out" by The Flairs, "Yes I'm Gonna Love You" by Sonny Anderson, "Little Jewel" by Tommy Jim Beam & The Four Fifths, "Short Fat Ben" by Phil Barclay & The Sliders, "Pretty Baby What's Your Name" by The Mellows, "I Ain't Givin Up Nothin" by Priscilla Bowman, and "Come On & Love Me" by The Champions. ✨✧ Marisa MonteRose & Charcoal ... CD
Metro Blue, 1994. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
When this album was first issued in the mid 90s by EMI, it quietly glided onto the market, with very little effect. Over the past few years, though, the record has slowly been championed by a large number of American critics and musicians, and has come to be one of the most critically acclaimed releases by a Brazilian musician in recent years. The album's a mix of jazz-tinged vocal tracks by Marisa, with a style that certainly owes something to earlier Brazilian singers like Gal Costa or Joyce, but which also has lots of its own nice touches. Arto Linday produced the set, and Marisa runs through a batch of songs that includes versions of Lou Reed's "Pale Blue Eyes", Arnaldo Antunes "Deepest Night", Jorge Ben's "Balanca Pema", and her own "Enquanto Isso", sung with Laurie Anderson. There's also loads of guests on the album – like Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, and others! CD

✨✧ Peter GabrielPeter Gabriel 4 – Security ... LP
Geffen, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A record that some might call the last truly great Peter Gabriel album – and a key cap to his excellent initial solo run! The album's got a deeper feel than before – slightly richer colors, more spiritual themes, and arguably more of a sense of majesty – almost an echo of some of the Native American modes explored by Laurie Anderson, who was then a recent collaborator of Gabriel! Instrumentation builds a bit more than before – with less guitars in parts, more percussive bits, and some funkier elements at the bottom that aren't exactly funky – more just a punch in force from the ground up. Gabriel's definitely feeling a sense of power here – and titles include "Lay Your Hands On Me", "Shock The Monkey", "San Jacinto", "I Have The Touch", "The Family & The Fishing Net", and "The Rhythm Of The Heat". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Ilmiliekki QuartetLand Of Real Men (with bonus download) ... LP
WeJazz (Finland), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The long-overdue return of a combo that had a huge impact on the sound of jazz on the Scandinavian scene over the past decade or two – given that its members have been involved in such important projects as Five Corners Quintet, Tuomo, Oddarang, and the Timo Lassy combo! Yet at the core, these four musicians are all very individual, and very different than some of that work – much more jazz-based, with a creative interplay between rhythm, tone, and texture – the last of which comes through especially strong in the trumpet work of Verneri Pohjola, which is completely sublime – almost with the power of a tenorist in some ways, but very tied to the structure of his instrument. Tuomo Prattala provides some really amazing textures on piano, alongside the bass of Antti Lotjonen and drums of Olavi Louhivuori – in modes that really keep things interesting throughout. The group begins with a great instrumental reading of Laurie Anderson's classic "O Superman", and other tracks include "Ravelogue", "Land Of Real Men", "Twisted Thistle", "Afterimage", and "Lonely Lonely".
