BamboosListen Hear! – The Bamboos Live! ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2007. Used ... $14.99
Listen! Hear! Impeccable live work from the mighty Bamboos – one of the tightest hard grooving combos on the modern deep funk scene! The set finds the Bamboos doing their thing at Sydney, Australia's Metro Theatre in December of 2007 – and if there was ever any doubt that the crew could carry their studio fury into the live arena, here's all you need to squash it! The set list is a mix of the group's originals and a riffs on classic funk, and they really nail it live – never missing a beat, and the mix is good enough to hear each and every player hitting their parts. Furiously funky drums, tightly snapping bass work, wallop blasts from the horns, killer organ grooves – with Kylie Auldist powerhouse soul chanteuse vocals on about half the tunes. Tracks include an incredible medley intro "Jan Jan/Sing A Simple Song/Lickin' Stick, Lickin' Stick/Doin' It To Death/Root Down", plus "Bamboos Theme", "Another Day In The Life Of Mr Jones", "The Witch", "Bring It Home", "My Baby's Cheating", "Never Did I Stop Loving You", "Amen Brother" and more. Cookin On 3 BurnersLab Experiments Vol 2 ... LP
Soul Messin' (Australia), 2018. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
No experiments here – as Cookin On 3 Burners stick to their very tried, very true formula – with lots of heavy Hammond upfront, riffed up nicely by guitar, and set atop some rock-solid drums! The trio just get sharper and sharper with each record – and this time around, they make space for a bit of guest help – vocals on four tracks from Kaiit, Fallon Williams, Kylie Auldist, and Simon Burke! The core sound is still strongly instrumental, though – and even when there's a singer, the organ burns with lots of intensity – on tunes that include "The Jump Off", "Warning", "Howler", "Force Of Nature", "Garden Of Freedom", "The Deep End", "One Of The Ones", and "Sunday Mumma". Deep Street SoulCome Alive ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2016. Used ... $1.99
Deep Street Soul are deeper than ever here – coming across with full-on, nonstop funky action – right from the very first drum breaks that start out the record! The set's got the group moving with incredible tightness – a razor-sharp instrumental core to beat the rest of the deep funk competition – topped on most cuts by vocals from May Johnson, who's easily one of the most unbridled singers we've heard working with a group like this! Some cuts have nicely noisy electric piano (Wurlitzer?) – which gives these guys a different core than some of the more Hammond-heavy groups – and the record also features guest vocals from Kylie Auldist and Joshua Taveres – but honestly, we like May's vocals the best! Titles include "Out Of The Gates", "Little Ray", "Done Me Wrong", "Big C", "Deux Freres", "The Hardest Part Is Knowing", "Love On Tap", and "Sweet Sugar Man". CD

✨✧ VariousMessage In The Music – The Ashley Beedle Re-Edits (2 CD & DVD) ... CD
Harmless (UK), 1970s. Used 2CD & DVD ... $16.99
Ashley Beedle takes on a host of classic tracks – mostly soul, funk, and club tracks from the 70s – but also a few more bits from surprising other sources as well! Beedle's got a wonderful ear for a tune – no surprise, since he's been DJ'ing on the London scene for decades, and was one of the key forces in helping bring some deeper soul sounds back to the clubs. And here, he works to re-edit a host of tunes – by extending them in ways that are based around all the best bits in the middle – pulled out and showcased even more strongly in Ashley's hands! It's been years since we've heard an Ashley Beedle collection this great – and the 2CD package also comes with a bonus DVD interview as well. Titles include Ashley Beedle re-edits of "Long Train Runnin" by Panama, "Guess I'm Gonna Cry" by New York Port Authority, "Railroad Man" by Bill Withers, "Do It" by Los Africanos, "For Baby Ooh" by Cymande, "Hangin On" by Brainstorm, "Burlesque" by Family, "I'm A Love Bug" by Donna McGhee, "Don't Leave Me" by Lamont Dozier, "All About The Paper" by Gene Chandler, "Keeping Secrets" by Switch, "In A Week In A Day" by Kylie Auldist, and "Woman Of The Ghetto" by Doris Duke.
