✨✧ Kurt RosenwinkelIntuit ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A set of jazz standards, but tunes that are nicely remade in the hands of guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel – really given that warm, raspy sound that he gets while effortlessly spinning out chords on his instrument – grooving gently, and with a voice that's become one of the most distinct on jazz guitar in recent decades! The rest of the group features Michael Kanan on piano, Joe Martin on bass, and Tim Pleasant on drums – players who lay back very strongly on the ballads, yet swing when needed – on titles that include "Darn That Dream", "Epiphany", "Summertime", "Sippin At Bells", "When Sunny Gets Blue", and "Dewey Square". ✨✧ Jim Snidero with Kurt RosenwinkelFar Far Away ... CD
Savant, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record that seems to bristle with color and life throughout – a surprisingly strong pairing of the tenor of Jim Snidero and the guitar of Kurt Rosenwinkel – the latter of whom seems to have a bit more bite than usual, but also seems to infect Snidero's horn with his innate sense of color! The rest of the lineup is equally great – a superb core trio with Orrin Evans on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and the blend of Farnsworth and Evans seems to bring in a new freshness to each of them as well. Titles include "Obsession", "Pat", "Nowhere To Hide", "Little Falls", "Search For Peace", "Infinity", and "Far Away". CD

✨✧ Brian Blade & The Fellowship BandKings Highway ... CD
Stoner Hill, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A record of rich textures and layers – music that swings, but also swirls – thanks to work on the set from Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Myron Walden on alto and bass clarinet, and Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano sax – all brewing together over the drums of Brian Blade! Pianist Jon Cowherd has a part in the colors and tones too – punctuating the proceedings, while also illuminating them too – adding his own sound to the mix, as the whole group moves together as a very cohesive whole! There's no bass at all – which further shines a light on the diversity of Blade's drumming – on titles that include "Catalysts", "Peoples Park", "Until We Meet Again", Look To The Hills", "Migration", and "Kings Highway". Joshua RedmanWhere Are We ... LP
Blue Note, 2023. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99 39.99
The first-ever album from Joshua Redman to feature vocals, yet a set that also has plenty of his own great tenor sax as well – all set up in a very unusual format wrapped around different scenes and cities in the US! The record's a bit of a statement on the America of the 21st Century, as even older songs are transformed in the setting, and mixed with some especially nice originals by the group – delivered by a lineup that features Gabrielle Cavassa on vocals, Aaron Parks on piano, Joe Sanders on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. The album also features guest work from Joel Ross on vibes, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Peter Bernstein on guitars, and Nicholas Payton on trumpets – and titles include "After Minneapolis", "Chicago Blues", "Manhattan", "That's New England", "Alabama", "Where Are You", and "My Heart In San Francisco". ✨✧ Chris PotterVertigo ... CD
Concord, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
Chris Potter's a player who always brings a slightly different feel to the table with each new record – and this one is no exception! At first glance, the outing's a simple quartet date – but as is typical with Potter, the set's actually quite complicated underneath – laid out in ever-changing rhythms, and framed with some very sharp corners – all in ways that are a wonderful update of modern ideals from a few decades back! There's definitely echoes of Monk and Lacy in the music here, but also a certain Potter-esque voice too – a way of hanging together the sounds with a completely fresh approach that's often simultaneously melodic and rhythmic. Potter plays tenor, soprano, bass clarinet, and piano – and other players include Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Scott Colley on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums – plus Joe Lovano on guest tenor on a few tracks. Titles include "Shiva", "Vertigo", "Long Walk Short Pier", "This Will Be", "Almost Home", "Modeen's Mood", and "Wake Up". CD

✨✧ Joe FarnsworthIn What Direction Are You Headed ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2023. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really different record from drummer Joe Farnsworth – a player we always love for a rock-solid approach to his music, but who here is clearly opening up a new chapter in his life – one that really offers a great variation on the sorts of expectations you might have when you see his name on a record! The record's got a gentle flow that's different than the usual Farnsworth drive – with the drummer laying back, and letting some electric elements in the group flow nicely – including the piano and Fender Rhodes of Julius Rodriguez, guitar of Kurt Rosenwinkel, and alto of Immanuel Wilkins – all players we've never heard with Joe before. Bassist Robert Hurst is as rock-solid as always – and titles include a wonderful remake of the spiritual classic "In What Direction Are You Heading", plus "Safe Corners", "Bobby No Bags", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Filters", "Terra Nova", and "Anyone But You". ✨✧ High PulpDays In The Desert ... CD
Anti, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
High Pulp have some pretty heavy jazz guests this time around – a killer lineup that includes work from Jeff Parker, Kurt Rosenwinkel, James Brandon Lewis, and Brandee Younger – all musicians who definitely deepen the sound, while still letting the core combo bristle with all the funky edges of their previous work! The jazz soloists are working in a territory that's not strictly jazz – more the post-styles of labels like Brownswood or International Anthem – but also given a different sort of spin in the manner we've come to expect from High Pulp. Titles include "Dirtmouth", "Never In My Short Sweet Life", "Robert Pollard", "Solanin", "Unified Dakotas", "Fatigue", and "Bad Infinity". CD

✨✧ Mark TurnerYam Yam ... CD
Criss Cross (Holland), 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful early album from tenorist Mark Turner – a set that's got all those dark moments and sharp edges of his later recordings, but in a setting that's nicely warm at times – and which has Turner coming across with a bit more soul! There's a special sort of mojo in the record – darkness mixed with redemption, as Turner carves his way over beautiful lines from the rest of the group – a quintet that features Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Brad Mehldau on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass, and Jorge Rossy on drums. Melhdau is especially nice next to Turner here – and the group are also joined by additional tenorists Seamus Black and Terence Dean on the title "Zurich". Other titles include "Isolation", "Subtle Tragedy", "Yam Yam", "Cubism", "Tune Number One", and a version of "Moment's Notice". CD

✨✧ Chris CheekVine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1999. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the best albums ever from saxophonist Chris Cheek – and a set that draws a lot from work by Brad Mehldau on piano and Fender Rhodes, and Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar! Both of those players have risen to great fame on their own – but here, in a 1999 session that features Cheek on tenor and soprano, they've already developed a key sense of color and tone – adding a richness to the record that really holds up over the nicely long tracks on the session! The rest of the group features Matt Penman on bass and Jorge Rossy on drums – and titles include "Reno", "Ice Fall", "The Wing Key", "Granada", "Vine", "So It Seems", and "Not A Samba".
