VariousKon & Amir – Off Track Vol 1 – The Bronx ... LP
BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99 27.98
One of the hippest compilations we've heard in years – a treasure trove of rare grooves from legendary crate diggers Kon and Amir! The pair have been known for years from the massive beats in their On Track mixes, and from subsequent reissue singles – but this set has them moving firmly off track, for an even more obscure blend of tracks – all of which show us an even hipper side of the pair's tastes! Amir's selections here are especially great – a wealth of great jazz, Latin, and world-styled grooves – nearly all of which have never been reissued before. Kon's tracks are often a bit more clubby – and together with Amir's, they make for a wonderfully rounded compilation – one that cares little about its own premise or posturing, but works hard to put a wealth of under-discovered grooves on the market. Titles include "Esto Me Gusto" by Juan Demonio, "Tune For LN" by Larry Nozero, "Nestero Ti Patte" by Marius Cultier, "Holding On (Kon's edit)" by Darryl Douglas, "Destroy The Nihilist Picnic" by The London Experimental Jazz Quartet, "Soar" by Claudio Mederios, "Opiniao" by Zelia Barbosa, "Darling I Love You (Kon's edit)" by Jorge Santana, "When I Comes To Loving Me (Kon's edit)" by Executive Suite, "Steel City Disco (Kon's edit)" by Steel City Orchestra, "Country" by Adolphe Parillon, "Douga" by Quintette Guineenne, and "81" by Imp Express. ✨✧ PretendersJust Be Yourself (ext mix, Kon rmx) ... 12-inch
Family Groove, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A soaring modern soul tune from The Pretenders – not the famous Ohio Rock group, but an obscure soul act who do a wonderful job of harmonizing along with the groove! "Just Be Yourself" is an uptempo message cut that's totally great – in the more righteous side of the disco spectrum, with a heavenly vibe that's really wonderful! The single features both a version of the tune that's nicely extended past the original 7" release – and a remix by Kon that adds in these soaring strings, for even more of a classic club vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

Perez PradoMambo Happy! ... LP
RCA, 1959. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Perez Prado at his best – sock-hard, with a choppy groove that's supported by some great percussion and really nice orchestrations! The feel here is in his best 50s mode – and possibly even better, as the recording quality on the set is great, and the mambo-focus makes for an album that never gets to soppy or slowed down – nicely jazzy at points, and served up with a heck of a lot of playful energy! Loads of nice numbers, including "Wild Mambo", "Go Go Mambo", "Syncopated Clock Mambo", "Agony", "Timba Timba", "Memoria A Chano", and "Kon Tomba". LP, Vinyl record album

Vainica DobleVainica Doble ... LP
Opalo/Vinilisssimo (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... About August 10, 2018 (delayed)
Mindblowing work from Vainica Doble – a Spanish group with a really unusual feel! The combo features dreamy vocals from singers Gloria Van Aerssen & Carmen Santonja – folded together in a style that's unlike any other female harmony work we can think of – hardly the sweet styles of Brasil 66, and instead a more sinister mode that has the voices kind of shifting back and forth against each other, working like twin sirens to draw the listener into the album! Instrumentation is equally compelling – a mix of psyche and folk modes, but with some fuller elements as well – making the fuzz sound a lot more special than usual, and creating an ambitious sound that reminds us of some of our favorite South American rock from the time. Titles include the funky "Quien Le Pone El Cascabel Al Gato" – plus "El Duende", "Dime Felix", "Caramelo De Limon", "Fulgencio Pimentel", "La Cotorra", "La Ballena Azul", and "Guru Zakun Kin Kon". ✨✧ MF DoomMM Food ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2004. Used 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The bugged sci fi maestro MF Doom returns with the MM Food album – a full five years since the underground classic Operation: Doomsday, and a straight up tie with Madvilliany for the championship title of best Doom-related LP since that immortal set! As you'd guess from the title, this album has a running theme with food, each title funnier than the last, but stays fresh throughout the 15 tracks thanks to tight production, masterfully spliced samples, and a verbal flow that's cooked and spiced to some kind of freakish perfection. The great "Hoe Cakes" single gets served early in set, and it sets the tone for a truly strong album. We didn't think Doom would serve two classic platters in a single year, but he done did it! Includes "Beef Rap", "Potholderz" with Count Bass D, "One Beer" produced by Madlib, "Poo Poo Platter", "Fillet-O-Rapper", "Gumbo", "Fig Leaf Bi Carbonate", "Kon Queso" produced by PNS, "Vomitspit", "Kookies" and more. TK (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A tight little snapshot of the late 70s legacy of the TK Disco label! This set has both standout staples and gems from deeper in the vaults, here in nice, long, re-worked & re-edited versions that celebrate the soul sound at the core of the tracks, while highlighting the dancefloor aspects. Very nicely chosen, with impeccable material by Gwen McCrae, Timmy Thomas, Jimmy Bo Horne, Ted Taylor and more, subtly reworked by the great DJs/producers Danny Krivit, Todd Terje, Dimitri From Paris and Kon! 8 long groovers on 2LPs: "Spank (Dimitri From Paris Classic Re-Edit)" by Jimmy Bo Horne , "Ghetto Music" by Ted Taylor, "I'm Your Boogie Man" & "I Get Lifted" by KC & The Sunshine Band (both are Todd Terje edits), "Do What You Wanna Do (Kon's Keep It Moving Mix)" by T-Connection, "Why Can't We Live Together (Late Nite Tuff Guy No More War Rework)" by Timmy Thomas, "Move Me Baby (Danny Krivit Edit)" by Gwen McCrae and "Jam On The Groove (Danny Krivit Edit)" by Ralph MacDonald. Chet Baker & Lee KonitzChet Baker & Lee Konitz In Concert ... LP
India Navigation, 1982. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A late concert from Chet, reunited here with Lee Konitz for a live set that's a lot more free-thinking than some of their classic recordings in the 50s! The pair are supported by Michael Moore on bass and Beaver Harris on drums – but the overall style of the recording is quite spare, with Chet and Lee moving around each other with a lot of room, on a set of longer tracks that include "This Is Always", "Just Friends", "Walkin", "There Will Never BE Another You", and "Airegin". Beat Konducta (Madlib)Beat Konducta Vol 3 – Beat Konducta In India ... LP
Stones Throw, 2007. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
Hazy beatcraft steeped in Indian soundtrack style funk, strings and percussion from the indefatigable Madlib – Volume 3 in the increasingly adventurous and conceptual outings of the Beat Konducta! This time out Madlib, er, Beat Konducta is conducting beats, strings & things from India and/or otherwise East – but the way in which the beats bluntly thump is quintessential Madlib – you know it and love it from the first beat! 'Lib really breathes fresh life into this approach – going miles deeper than anyone out there doing the Bollywood-hip hop hybrid – coming up with a sound all his own. Masterful! "Onthanewthing", "Indian Deli", "Rumble", "Dancing Girls Theme", "Piano Garden", "Dark Alley Incidental Music", "Early Party", "Fifth Chant", "The Rip Off (Scene 3)", and "Sitar Ride". Konrad ElfersFuneral in Berlin ... LP
RCA, 1967. Very Good ... $9.99
One of the grooviest Michael Caine spy films of the 60s – given an equally groovy soundtrack by Konrad Elfers! We don't know Elfers from other work of the time, but this album's a real standout – not the usual spy sort of work, although still with some great jazzy touches at times – including some wonderful reed passages – which are then mixed with some of the more tense, thriller-style elements that are served up with larger orchestrations – but always given this odd, offbeat style that reflects the unusual feel of Caine's films as Harry Palmer in the 60s. Titles include "The Funeral", "Fate Of Two Pawns", "Skating Rendezvous At Europa Centre", "Palmer Meets Samantha", and "Checkpoint Charlie". LP, Vinyl record album

KinksKink Kontroversy ... LP
Reprise, 1966. Very Good+ ... $44.99
Ray Davies is really coming into his own by the time of this third album by The Kinks – penning almost all the tunes in the set, and really starting to stretch out with some of his more unique ideas! The songs are already beginning to show that picture postcard side of British pop that was the Kinks stock in trade during their best years – and the themes and subjects are really expanded from the group's music of the previous years – already shaking off their American influence, and bringing the world a decidedly English version of rock and roll. Of course, the album does feature the group's wonderful cover of "Milk Cow Blues" – still a nice link to the earlier years – plus the Davies originals "When I See That Girl Of Mine", "I Am Free", "Till The End Of The Day", "The World Keeps Going Round", "I'm On An Island", "It's Too Late", "You Can't Win", "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", "Gotta Get The First Plane Home", and "Ring The Bells". Rex KonaWild Orchids – Exotic Sounds Of Rex Kona & His Mandarins ... LP
Columbia, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $4.99
Wonderful stuff – way more than just an easy instrumental album, and a great batch of exotic tunes with lots of jazzy touches! There's enough of the Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman influence here – but Rex and group take the sound a lot further, by playing like a true small combo, and swinging the tunes with a heck of a lot more jazz than you'd expect. Grooves are nice, and get quite Latiny at times – and the feel of the record almost reminds us of some of Bobby Montez work for Pacific Jazz in the late 50s. Titles include "Ginza Girl", "Sushi", "Patricia", "Wild Orchids", "Bird Train", "Bushi Bushi", and "Will He Like Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Trumpeter Toshinori Kondo may have cut some avant-oriented material over the years – but this set is a different sort of record – one that's cut with his Tibetan Blue Air Liquid Band, in a playful mix of rhythms, tones, and jazz! The approach is maybe post-fusion, inflected with a bit of art rock inspiration – still with plenty of jazz-based solos, but also a very unconventional approach to the rhythms, which are sometimes sunny and bright, sometimes a bit more edgey. A gem by Lee Konitz – one of his near-perfect 50s sessions for Atlantic! Lee's tone here is crisp, clear, and hauntingly fresh – modern, yet never academically so – and played with a dexterity that's incredible, but never too in love with itself to go too far. Key players on the session include guitarist Billy Bauer on side one, and bassist Peter Ind and pianist Sal Mosca on side two – both artists who fit Lee's vision perfectly, matching tone and color beautifully. Black Lion (Germany), 1954. Used ... $7.99
Tight early work from Lee Konitz – recorded on location at the very hospitable Storyville nightclub in Boston – a sweet setting for his angular tones on the alto! The style here is great – cutting lines that are incredibly precise, yet crafted with enough soul to keep them from just being exercises in sound – delivered with a bit more warmth than some of Lee's other recordings of the time. The group's a quartet with Ronnie Ball on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Al Levitt on drums – and titles include "Sound Lee", "Subconscious Lee", "Hi Beck", and "These Foolish Things". Whether you're a Konitz fanatic or not (we are!), this set's a great one – even though it's made up of an assortment of different recordings from the late 50s and very early 60s. Peter Ind was the bassist in some of Konitz's groups during the late 50s, and he recorded most of this material himself, and issued it on his small Wave label during the 70s. Players include Billy Bauer, Ronnie Ball, Sal Mosca, Ind, and Ben Tucker – and the quality of the material is more classic Konitz than many officially-released titles from the same time. Konkere BeatsYoruba – Songs & Rhythms For The Yoruba Gods In Nigeria ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $18.99 22.98
A beautiful set of contemporary yoruba recordings – performed by the Konkere Beats group in Nigeria, and with a different vibe than some of the more familiar yoruba material from the Caribbean! The sacred sounds are full of percussion and vocal chants – and have a vibe that's maybe even more spiritual overall than some of the other modes that have appeared over the course of the diaspora – in a way that, even though contemporary, might well make this package a rootsier effort than many others we've heard before. As usual, Soul Jazz provide a lot of history in the detailed notes – but those slightly obscure the origin of the group behind this great music – who should be lauded even just for their percussionists alone, who've got a great way of moving between the rhythmic and melodic elements of the music. Titles include "Homage To Esu", "Eshere", "Bata Drums Ensemble", "Homage To Obatala", "Eulogy To Amila", "Dundun Instrumental Ensemble", "Homage To Yemoja", and "Agbe Gbe Wadele". CD

Madlib & OthersMadlib's Medicine Show No 3 – Beat Konducta In Africa ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
Raw crackling hip hop funk beatcraft at its deepest from mighty Madlib – working in his Beat Konducta style for this third entry in the epic Madlib's Medicine Show Series! Beat Konducta In Africa is a hazy hip hop instrumental set from 'Lib (lest you thought it might be a funky compilation of rare African material) with some additional mixing from J Rocc – based on rare African vinyl. The sound is pure Madlib/Beat Konducta heady hip hop funk – recognizable as being spun from and inspired by African material, and impeccably so, with that instantly identifiable, exploratory Madlib sonic stamp. He looks far beyond Afrobeat and funk sources, with some raw funk rock beats, psych, garage and more with some trippy vocal samples – and he's building up from blueprints records originally pressed all over Africa – Zambia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Botswana and Ivory Coast. But too much mention of the source material risks making this sound like a compilation or a mix set, when it's Madlib all the way! Titles include "Motherland", "Raw Introduction To Afreaka", "Warrior's Theme", "Street Hustler", "Afritonic" (Pts 1 & 2), "Tradition", "Blackfire", "Obtaive", "Mtima", "African Bounce", "Freedom Play", "Natural Sound Waves", "Unika (Outro)" and many more. 43 tracks on the CD version, which includes 6 bonus tracks. Mid 70s magic from the team of Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz – playing together here with an even sharper edge than their recordings of two decades before! The recordings are all live – done at the Club Montmartre in December of 1975 – but they've got a clarity that's almost studio-worthy, which really captures the tone of the players. Marsh is especially great – working with that stretched-out sense of freedom he was hitting in the 70s – and Konitz is pretty swinging himself, with a bit less of the more modern tones of that decade. Soulful and spiritual sounds from Yoruban via Brooklyn combo Okonkolo! There's a wonderful sonic range here – with voices, bata drum and coro strngs at the core – often taking flight on Cantos with some really nice additional strings and horns that bring the songs to soaring, sometimes almost psychedelic heights without flying too far from the soulful roots. It's soul music in the truest sense – group leader Abraham Rodiguez is a Yoruba Chango priest – and titles include "Yemaya", "Canto Asoyin", "Wolenche Por Chango", "Oba", "Ochun", "Canto Por Obatala", "Canto Por Ochun", "Obatala" and "Elegua". Instrumentals for the classics second Organized Konfusion LP – on double vinyl for better sound! Of course it's got amazing production ranging from laidback to more uptempo sounds –- with a nice edge even without the lyrics from Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po. One of those once rare, still underappreciated hip hop LPs you can listen to all the way through without even thinking of skipping a track – and it still sounds great after all these years. Tracks include "Stress", "Extinction Agenda", "Thirteen", "Black Sunday", "Drop Bombs", "Bring It On", "Why", "Let's Organize", "3-2-1", "Stray Bullet", and "Maintain". LP, Vinyl record album

Masahiko SatoOnimotsu Konimotsu ... CD
Super Fuji Discs (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
Very groovy soundtrack material from Masahiko Sato – a Japanese jazz artist that you might know from some equally groovy records in the 60s! This film music follows somewhat in the spirit of Sato's other recordings, save for the fact that the tunes are shorter – more like film cues overall – and often focus around this wonderfully cool main theme that has a riffing trumpet, followed by a riffing guitar, then laced with a sweet keyboard line – a great tune that's offered up in many variations, and which almost feels as if some UK ITV theme from the 60s was given a fresh treatment at the A&M Records studios! There's a few vocal tunes, but the album's mostly instrumental – and there's some nice twists and turns as things move along, especially towards the second half of the record, where some of the instrumentation is even more unusual. The CD is relatively short, but the package more than makes up for that with a very big booklet of notes in Japanese and photos. CD

The first batch is from the Congolese Kumina religion, 5 tracks: "Wake Up, Mama Keith", "Country", "Before Day", "Holy Mother Fienke" and "Holy Mountain", and the rest of side one is taken up with 4 from the Revival tradition: "Chorus", "Bands Chorus" and 2 versions of "Lining Out". Wan Chai (Hong Kong), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A mighty sweet little set – not just Hong Kong disco, but also a fair bit of soul and AOR tracks too – all of which we've never heard before! Much of the music here shows a strong American influence – right down to the English language lyrics that top almost all the tracks – and the instrumentation is often tight and funky, and put forward without the slicker production you'd find on US work of the time! In fact, a number of these groups were working big in HK clubs during the time – which was still a relatively small world – which almost makes some of the music feel like indie disco from the American underground, the kind of small label cuts that have been favorites for modern soul collectors over the years. You might want to consider this package to be an addition to that world, rather than a set of truly Chinese material from the 70s – and if you dig funky 70s soul as much as we do, you should find plenty here to love! Titles include "Hurt So Bad" by Tracy, "Take It To The Bossman" by The Reflection, "Swearin To God" by Charing Carpo, "This Is No Horse" by AJL Band, "Day Dreamin" by Julie Sue, "You're The Love" by Louie Castro, "Gotta Be The One" by The New Topnotes, "Lovin You" by Rita Kwong, and "Make Me Believe In You" by Oscar & His Orchestra. ✨✧ Ornette ColemanTivoli Koncertsalen Copenhagen 1965 ... CD
Hi Hat, 1965. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mindblowing performance from legendary reedman Ornette Coleman – captured here completely on fire, and working with his groundbreaking trio that featured David Izenzon on bass and Charles Moffett on drums! This material was recorded by Danish Radio a few days before the performances that ended up on Ornette's Live At The Golden Circle albums on Blue Note – and like those sessions, the vibe is completely different than the Coleman sound of the Atlantic Records dates a few short years before – very open and free, at a level that made this tour a huge influence on the sound of European improvised jazz for a long time to come! Ornette plays a bit of trumpet and violin, in addition to his alto sax – but it's that instrument that we love the most, and which maintains this strongly soulful vibe – on titles that include "Falling Star", "Clergyman's Dream", "Lonely Woman", and "Sadness". Strut (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very cool sounds from a wonderful pairing of sources – the ancient African thumb piano and contemporary funky production – at a level that's almost a 21st Century update of the American 70s kalimba experiments by Phil Cohran and Earth Wind & Fire! There's moments here that definitely seem to evoke the latter's mix of kalimba and clubby grooves – but in a much more stripped-down way that puts the instrument strongly upfront, to carry most of the tune – while very tasteful beats and basslines set up a groove! The mode might sound hokey – and in the wrong hands it could be – but the approach is wonderful here, and very much in the best legacy of the older Afro Funk reissues we've loved from the Strut label. Titles include "Yeanoh", "Thank You Mama", "Belle Wahalla", "Titi Dem Too Service", "Don Don Mi Money", "Kondi Instrumental", "You Wan Married", "Thogolobea (LV rmx)", "Y'Alimamy (Chief Boima rmx)", and "Without Money No Family (Chief Boima rmx)". Atlantic, 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include great readings of "Star Eyes" and "Everything Happens To Me" – plus Konitz tunes "Kary's Trance" and "Cork N Bib" – and a reading of Peter Ind's "Nesuhi's Instant". CD

An interesting concept record, with Konitz approaching a variety of material, much of it written by his collaborators, in wide open duet settings. Players include Jim Hall, Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones and Richie Kamuca, and on each piece, both Konitz and his companion have loads of room to extrapolate on the base composition. Perhaps the highlight of the record is to be able to listen to Konitz wrap his warm tone around each piece, and then dance lightly around the melody. 8 numbers, including "Erb" with Jim Hall, "Checkerboard" with Dick Katz, and "You Don't Know What Love Is" with Joe Henderson. Verve, 1959. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark recording – but never issued properly until this reissue! This rare live set was recorded in New York in 1959, and it features the unusual pairing of Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh with the Bill Evans trio of the time – Bill on piano (natch), Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Paul Motion on drums. Evans' warm, round lyricism is quite striking here – much more different backing than we're used to hearing behind Konitz and Marsh, although still with enough modern tones to make them feel right at home. There's a darkly brooding feel to the best numbers here, and most tracks stretch out far past the 5 minute mark – making for a 12 track set that offers over 90 minutes of music! Titles include "Lennie Bird", "April", "Just Friends", "Palo Alto", "317 E 32nd", "It's You Or No One", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "Lennie-Bird", and "How About You?". CD

A group with a sound like no other – one that features home-made electronics and amplification, and an array of highly-percussive instrumentation that includes thumb pianos, megaphones, microphones, and old car parts! Konono's been making this music for the past 25 years – working in the suburbs of Kinshasa as a collective of musicians experimenting with the relation of sound and rhythm – using a fair bit of distortion to push the boundaries of their style. There's a unique relationship here between traditional African rhythms and newer electronic music – almost a primitive electronica, if you will – but with a style that goes way beyond such a facile tag. ✨✧ Konono No 1Lubuaku ... CD
Terp (Netherlands), 2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliantly funky and raw live recording by the Congo's great Konono No 1 – taped in Vera, Holland on their first European tour in February of 2003, and released on Terp, the label owned by Terrie Ex of the Ex! The brittle, in-the-red likembe patterns fly by in high-velocity cycles, amped-up by the group's trademark distortion and relentlessly propelled by a three-piece rhythm section of congas, cow bells, and metal percussion – and all of it's topped by great call-and-response singing. Although the music is rooted in the ancient traditions of the Bazombe – a tribe indigenous to the area around the Angola-Conga border – the furious attack almost sounds like a cross between techno throb and punk energy. It's no surprise that the band's touring mates, the Ex, preferred to open for Konono – there's no way anyone could follow this mind-numbing stuff. A platter of Madlib beats – the first in a series of instrumental hip hop from 'Lib's Beat Konducta (formerly Beat Conductor) moniker! Madlib's production work has always had a filmic groove, and this set collects and assembles the most cinematic of said beats into an (unsurprisingly) incredible 2-sided piece. The soundscapes really kind of run the gamut of his hip hop styles – always soulful, and always funky, whether he's rocking a stone funk or an electro-modeled groove. Honestly, how much longer is it going to take for the mainstream to finally catch up with this genius!?! One of the greatest albums ever recorded by Lee Konitz – a sublime 50s treasure we've loved for years! The session's the most perfect realization of the compacted angular cool style that he was reaching for in the 50s – and each note is crafted with a precision and intensity that you'll be hard pressed to find on other albums from the time, even others of his that are quite excellent. Guitarist Billy Bauer is fantastic, and his playing acts like these tiny little spider webs to support Konitz's creepingly exploratory solos – held together magically by some very slight rhythmic accompaniment from the team of Henry Grimes on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Soul Jazz (UK), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Never-issued work by 60s Swedish modern jazz legend Gilbert Holmstrom – one of the most freely improvising musicians on his scene at the time! The set brings together two long selections recorded in 1968 – even more far-reaching material than Gilbert's famous Quintet album a few years before – and Gilbert blows tenor and flute in a large group that has this way of swinging effortlessly between cohesion and individual explosions of sound – a bit like some of Clifford Thornton's work at times, with a starkly revolutionary sound that's quite impressive, even given the long legacy of Swedish modern jazz in the years before. Other players include Enar Jonsson and Lars Lofstedt on trumpets, Pider Avall and Stig Ekelof on trombones, Jan Forslund on baritone, Clas Fehling on piano, Claes Wallin on bass, and Anders Soderling on drums – and both selections appear here in bold, brilliant mono. Very cool sounds from the duo of Bei Bei and Shawn Lee – and a set we love even more than their previous collaboration! The sound here is very spare, but in the best sort of way – as it allows for plenty of focus on the exotic harp sounds provided by Bei Bei, which are then set to funky rhythms from Shawn Lee – an artist you'll know from countless wonderful records over the past decade or so! The mix of harp and funk is very much in the best style of the Dorothy Ashby albums for Chess/Cadet – but the minimal approach is a bit different, too – and makes for an even more exotic funk vibe overall. A very cool group from Mali – one who have some of the older currents that you'd associate with the scene, but served up with a nicely contemporary crackle! The vocals often have those bluesy inflections that have risen up strongly in west Africa – but the instrumentation also has a nicely electrified current alongside rootsy percussion – especially when moments of distortion come in to play, almost with the blown-out quality you'd know from Konono, although maybe less processed overall. There's also a lot of vocal interplay between lead singer Fassara Sacko and other members of the group – on titles that include "Tangwanana", "Salia", "Stange Koreduga", "Dirty Donso", "From Segou To Nightmare", and "Rougeot" – plus the very funky "Mali Liberela", which almost has some James Brown-ish guitar! A Trojan Records classic from the mighty Ken Boothe – an album set to just the right sort of grooves for his beautifully soulful vocals! The record's definitely got the political vibe you'd expect from the cover and title, but maybe even more compelling is the way that Ken can still sound heartbreaking and personal when delivering the lyrics – as if the social change around him was a very individual thing, which somehow makes the message of the music even more powerful. Parlophone, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 11CD ... $119.99 149.98
Amazing music from one of our most-treasured stretches of David Bowie's career – that creatively-fertile time when he escaped to West Berlin, hid from the mainstream, and made some groundbreaking records with Brian Eno – then returned to the limelight to remind us all that he was still a hell of a force to be reckoned with! The set includes everything post-Thin White Duke, and pre-Let's Dance – a run of music that's still shaping new sounds on this planet all these many years later. The set begins with Low – the mix of experimental instrumentals and subtle vocal tracks that was a complete change from Ziggy Stardust – and follows with Heroes, Lodger, and Scary Monsters & Super Creeps – all albums that reintroduce some sense of song and lyrical interplay, but at a level that clearly indicates how important Bowie was to the generation of post-punk and new wave as his earlier work was to psych, prog, and glam! But the package isn't just a standard collection of albums – because along with those four studio records, it also features the live album Stage, presented here in two different full mixes – plus a new 2017 mix of Lodger, which really increases the edge. There's also a special Heroes EP, with all the different language versions of the song – and a very cool Re:Call 3 album – which features all the singles that were issued at the time, plus other rare material – and Bowie's very unique take on Bertolt Brecht's Baal. Titles on this album include "Alabama Song", "Crystal Japan", "Under Pressure", "Remembering Marie A", "The Drowned Girl", "The Dirty Song", "Cat People", and even his "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" duet with Bing Crosby. As with other entries in this complete Bowie series, the presentation is wonderful – album sleeve replicas, great packaging, and lots of notes – kind of a treasure, even if you already own some of the records! An all star section of the Brit funky soul scene comes Full Circle – with members of Beggar & Co, Incognito, Hi Tension, Central Line and more – on a sweet batch tunes with an upbeat, jazzy groove, too! The opening "BFA Theme (Let The Music Blow Your Mind)" kicks the set off with a theme of togetherness that holds strong throughout, with lead vocals that are often shared by the group in harmony. Kenny Wellington & Paul McLean handle a lot of the songwriting & production, sharing vocals with sax player Patrick McLean, guitar player Breeze McKrieth, sax & flute player David Baptiste, and trombone player Jerome Harper. The Association also includes Steve Salvari & Peter Hinds on keys, Billy Osborne on percussion, and Ernie McKone on bass – with guests Simon Law, Toby Barker and others. Tim BuckleyGreetings From LA ... LP
Warner/Straight, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
A later effort from Tim Buckley with a bigger sound and more of a straight ahead approach – with a big nod in the groove direction and some R&B creeping in! In lesser hands, Greetings From LA could be considered more of a "commercial" album than the unpredictable stylistic variances of Tim's earlier records, but his vocals and depth of passion keeps it a riveting experience. Rolling boogie piano, some vamping organ, groovy strings, and even some female chorus backing vocals bring elements of 70s soul and juke joint sounds into the mix – while Buckley's emoting is on par with earlier work – even if some of the lyrics are kind of on the bawdy side. Includes "Move With Me", "Get On Top", "Sweet Surrender", "Night Hawkin'", "Devil Eyes", "Hong Kong Bar" and "Make It Right". LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Clarke, Red Garland, & OthersJazz From Carnegie Hall – Live In Paris 1 Octobre 1958 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1958. New Copy ... $15.99 18.98
American jazzmen, playing in Paris – and working in the sort of all-star jam session mode you'd know from the Jazz At The Philharmonic recordings of the 50s! The format here is similar – some key players, in modes that run from swing to bop to more modern jazz – all brought together in an amazing display of spontaneous dexterity and individual imagination! This CD marks the first time this music has ever been issued, and the recording quality is great – really at a level that matches the best of those older Verve concerts – and the group is an unusual septet, with Lee Konitz on alto, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding on trombones, Phineas Newborn and Red Garland on pianos, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include nice open takes of "Dahoud", "Afternoon In Paris", "Stardust", "This Can't Be Love", "Bernie's Tune", "Bag's Groove", "It's Alright With Me", "Laverne Walk", "Blue Lou", and "Star Eyes". Dennis CoffeyEvolution ... LP
Sussex, 1971. Good ... $4.99
A groundbreaking little record – and one that set a whole new standard for guitar funk in the 70s! By the time of this set, Dennis Coffey had been playing, arranging, and producing all over the Detroit soul scene for many years – so it wasn't like he really needed a hit to get paid or anything – but the record forever marked him as a guitar player to be reckoned with, and is a perfect showcase for Coffey's fuzzed-out funky style – instantly recognizable and still extremely popular today! The album contains the monster breakbeat cut "Scorpio" – kind of a seminal text of hip hop – plus plenty of other groovers like "Getting It On", "Garden Of The Moon", "Big City Funk", and "Sad Angel". Dandy's Dandy (Johnny Rodriguez Jr)Dandy's Dandy – A Latin Affair ... CD
Latin Percussion Ventures, 1979. Used ... $11.99
An obscure but excellent session – recorded at the end of the 70s with some of the best players in the New York salsa underground! The music is extremely vibrant – and the styles of the tracks range from hard Afro-Cuban percussion grooving to tight Latin jazz in a classic mode – with instrumentation that ranges from pachanga-styled flute and violin, to some harder-jamming grooves with a lot more piano in the lead. Production has that raw, but clear sound that we love so much in the Latin Percussion albums of the time – a groove that's very different than that of Fania or Tico – and Sonny Bravo plays piano, Rene Lopez is on trumpet, Nicky Marrera is on timbales, Dick Meza plays flute, Eddie Montalvo plays conga, and Mario Rivera is on saxes. Includes great Latin Jazz versions of "Tune Up", "Manteca", and "April In Paris" – plus "Jo Ca Nic", "Son De La Loma", and "Konkoina". CD

Miles DavisChronicle – The Complete Prestige Recordings 1951 to 1956 (8 CD set) ... CD
Prestige, Mid 50s. Used 8 CDs ... $38.99
Wow! An incredible collection of seminal recordings from one of the most important figures in modern music! All of Miles' recordings from the Prestige label in one place, bound up in a well annotated box, and given a complete discography and lots of excellent photos. It's almost too much astounding jazz in one place! The list of sidemen and great LPs is almost too long to go over, but in addition to Miles' remarkable Cookin'/Relaxin'/Walkin'/Workin' sessions, there's all of the material issued as Bags' Groove, with the Modern Jazz Giants and loads more, and some of the stellar accompanists includes John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz, Red Garland, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Milt Jackson, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, and Max Roach, just to name a few. There's far too many tracks to list here, but there's takes of "Blue Room", "Conception", "Compulsion", "Miles Ahead", "Blue Haze", "Airegin", "Bag's Groove", "The Man I Love", "Green Haze", "Dr Jackle", "The Theme", "Trane's Blues", "'Round About Midnight", "Half Nelson", "My Funny Valentine" and loads more! CD
(CONDITION NOTE: outer box is a little wavy, with light peeling at the spine. Booklet has light staining & rippling, from water damage, mostly confined to the bottom inch or two outside the main text.)

✨✧ Desmond DekkerYou Can Get It If You Really Want It (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $12.99
There's never been anyone like Desmond Dekker – not back in the day, when he was one of the biggest ambassadors for the Jamaican scene – nor for many years later, when his unique blend of soul and reggae were still the most go-to sounds for folks around the globe! Desmond's got a voice that almost rivals that of Sam Cooke for its sweetness and soul – and it's perfectly crafted onto grooves that are far hipper than the usual ska and rocksteady of the time – and which have this bubbling intensity that was maybe even more important an early introduction to reggae than the hits of Bob Marley that would come along a few years later. A record like this is key testament to Dekker's genius – great production from Leslie Kong, and not a bad track in the bunch – titles that include "You Can Get It If You Really Want", "Peace On The Land", "Cindy", "Perseverance", "I Believe", "That's The Way Life Goes", "Coomyah", and "You Got Soul". Great CD features 11 bonus tracks – including "Mother Nature", "Sing A Little Song", "Beware", "Busted Lad", "My World Is Blue", "Pick Up The Phone", "Travel On", and "Everybody Join Hands". CD

Dizzy KSweet Music Vol 1 ... LP
Sticky Buttons (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99
They certainly got the title right on this one – as the set's a collection of sweet grooves from Dizzy K Falola – a Nigerian artist who represented a whole new wave of soulful styles coming out of the Lagos scene during the 80s! These tracks are still as funky as any Nigerian music of the 70s, but they're constructed in a very different way – much leaner, with lots of beats, basslines, and keyboards – almost more of a New York street soul approach, at a level that makes these tracks resonate with some of the cooler American indie singles of the time! Some of the cuts feel as if they could have been issued on 99 Records, others almost would play to the breakdance crowd – and titles include "Omoge", "You", "Excuse Me Baby", "Saturday Night Raps", "I'll Never Love Again", "Take It To The DJ", "Baby Kilode", "Konga Mama", and "Special Love". Jun FukamachiJun Fukamachi Live – Triangle Session (deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Kitty/Universal (Japan), 1977. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
One of the tightest albums we've ever heard from keyboardist Jun Fukamachi – a live album, but one that's got even more focus than some of his studio sessions! Jun works here with a core combo of Japanese fusion musicians – including some especially fantastic guitar from Kenji Ohmura, a player who really shines throughout! The rhythms are tight, often quite funky, and the album also features performances by both the Brecker Brothers, and the trombone genius Barry Rogers. All tracks are long, and titles include "Funky Sea Funky Dew", "Stick Freighter", "Perfidy", "Hateruma", and "Plastic Echelon". Deluxe edition adds in lots of bonus tracks – including "King Kong", "Latin Medley", "Left Handed Woman", "Creature Of Many Faces", and "In The Holiday Groove". CD

Funk IncFunk Inc ... LP
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
A killer instrumental album of hard organ grooves and funky basslines! This was the album that broke Funk Inc out of their Indianapolis scene, and made them a force to be forever reckoned with in the history of funky jazz. The album grooves hard in the same sound as some of the classic work by Prestige jazz funk giants like Rusty Bryant, Charles Earland, or Ivan Boogaloo Jones – but it's almost even tighter than their work, because the Funk Inc combo as a tightly woven group of players who'd been together for a number of years. The record's filled with monster cuts that you'll recognize immediately, like the group's famous "Kool is Back", which has a monster sample on the intro, and hard heavy Kool & The Gang grooves throughout. Other tracks include "Sister Janie", "The Whipper", and "Bowlegs". LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter Gordon, Red Rodney, Von Freeman, et alCharlie Parker Memorial Concert ... LP
Cadet, 1970. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $3.99
In Chicago, the cult of Bird fanatics probably lived harder than in other cities – and in the few decades after Charlie Parker's death, the city was host to annual Bird Memorial concerts during the month of August. This obscure 2LP set on Cadet does a good job of documenting the energy and comraderie that went into those sessions – as it captures tunes from four different performances during the series, all recorded at Chicago's North Park Hotel. Players include Dexter Gordon, Howard McGhee, Vi Redd, Lee Konitz, Art Hoyle, Von Freeman, Jodie Christian, Roy Haynes, Muhal Richard Abrams, Eddie Jefferson, and Kenny Dorham – and the set's a great crossection of players – from the bop to the less obvious Parker-philes – in a strong illustration of Bird's still-consistent influence even at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Ornithology", "Yardbird Suite", "Disappointed", "Parker's Mood", "Now's The Time", and "Billie's Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album

Ernie HenrySeven Standards & A Blues ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1957. Used ... $11.99
Ernie Henry was a fantastic alto player who only cut a rare few albums before his untimely death. Most folks will know him from his great work on a few Monk sessions – but this album features tracks that were the last the Henry cut as a leader, done in late 1957 shortly before he passed away. The records show Henry as an emerging lyrical modernist on the alto – kind of a soul jazz version of Lee Konitz, but with a bit more of a swing. The group includes Wynton Kelly, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones – and tracks include "Specific Gravity", "My Ideal", "Like Someone In Love", and "Soon". CD
