✨✧ PretendersJust Be Yourself (ext mix, Kon rmx) ... 12-inch
Family Groove, Early 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A soaring modern soul tune from The Pretenders – not the famous Ohio Rock group, but an obscure soul act who do a wonderful job of harmonizing along with the groove! "Just Be Yourself" is an uptempo message cut that's totally great – in the more righteous side of the disco spectrum, with a heavenly vibe that's really wonderful! The single features both a version of the tune that's nicely extended past the original 7" release – and a remix by Kon that adds in these soaring strings, for even more of a classic club vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ VariousKon & Amir – Off Track Vol 1 – The Bronx ... LP
BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest compilations we've heard in years – a treasure trove of rare grooves from legendary crate diggers Kon and Amir! The pair have been known for years from the massive beats in their On Track mixes, and from subsequent reissue singles – but this set has them moving firmly off track, for an even more obscure blend of tracks – all of which show us an even hipper side of the pair's tastes! Amir's selections here are especially great – a wealth of great jazz, Latin, and world-styled grooves – nearly all of which have never been reissued before. Kon's tracks are often a bit more clubby – and together with Amir's, they make for a wonderfully rounded compilation – one that cares little about its own premise or posturing, but works hard to put a wealth of under-discovered grooves on the market. Titles include "Esto Me Gusto" by Juan Demonio, "Tune For LN" by Larry Nozero, "Nestero Ti Patte" by Marius Cultier, "Holding On (Kon's edit)" by Darryl Douglas, "Destroy The Nihilist Picnic" by The London Experimental Jazz Quartet, "Soar" by Claudio Mederios, "Opiniao" by Zelia Barbosa, "Darling I Love You (Kon's edit)" by Jorge Santana, "When I Comes To Loving Me (Kon's edit)" by Executive Suite, "Steel City Disco (Kon's edit)" by Steel City Orchestra, "Country" by Adolphe Parillon, "Douga" by Quintette Guineenne, and "81" by Imp Express. ✨✧ Willie BoboAlways There (12 inch version, Kon's Kick The Bobo Remix) ... 12-inch
Columbia/Nature Sounds, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ronnie Laws may have had the first hit version of "Always There", but Willie Bobo's is a great one too – with a slightly Latin tinge that takes the cut to a whole new level, adding in some extra percussion to make its jazz funk grooves stand up on end! Great pressing – with one side that replicates the original 12" promo mix – and another new funky mix by Kon! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ George DukeI Want You For Myself (original 12 inch mix, Kon's extended remix) ... 12-inch
Kontemporary, Late 70s. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic clubby cut from George Duke – a brightly grooving blend of jazz, funk, and soul – very much in the best styles of the time from Patrice Rushen or Webster Lewis! Of course, George virtually invented the mode a few years before both of them – but he's very much at the crisp modern crackle here – working with great lead vocals from soul singer Lynn Davis – who soars along nicely before the instrumental passages come in. Kon spaces things out nicely on his mix – creating these breaks between the different modes of the tunes, and really expanding on some of the instrumental niceness! 12-inch, Vinyl record

AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

Hideo ShirakiHideo Shiraki Recital At Sankei Hall, Tokyo ... LP
King (Japan), 1959. Near Mint- ... $48.99
Hardly the staid affair you might guess from the "recital" in the title – and an all-out drum frenzy event from the legendary Hideo Shiraki! This late 50s live session has Shiraki working in a mode that's even more open and bombastic than his studio albums from the time – drums really right up front in the mix, at a level that almost has them dominating when they're playing rhythm behind the horns! Many numbers have Hideo crackling strongly on the lead-in bits – setting the sort of fire that made him almost the Japanese Art Blakey at the time – with a similar sense of inspiration to the horn players who follow up on the solos. Titles include "Yukia Kon Kon", "Skin Deep", "My Funny Valentine", and "Strike Up The Band". LP, Vinyl record album

Vainica DobleVainica Doble ... LP
Opalo/Vinilisssimo (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... About August 10, 2018
Mindblowing work from Vainica Doble – a Spanish group with a really unusual feel! The combo features dreamy vocals from singers Gloria Van Aerssen & Carmen Santonja – folded together in a style that's unlike any other female harmony work we can think of – hardly the sweet styles of Brasil 66, and instead a more sinister mode that has the voices kind of shifting back and forth against each other, working like twin sirens to draw the listener into the album! Instrumentation is equally compelling – a mix of psyche and folk modes, but with some fuller elements as well – making the fuzz sound a lot more special than usual, and creating an ambitious sound that reminds us of some of our favorite South American rock from the time. Titles include the funky "Quien Le Pone El Cascabel Al Gato" – plus "El Duende", "Dime Felix", "Caramelo De Limon", "Fulgencio Pimentel", "La Cotorra", "La Ballena Azul", and "Guru Zakun Kin Kon". ✨✧ Grand Slam with Gary Mudbone CooperFunk Cruisin' – The Neverending Voyage (includes bonus DVD) ... LP
TNT Productions (Germany), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary group from overseas, but one who've drank heavily from the George Clinton P-Funk brew of the 70s – and found a great way to bring the sound forward for the 21st Century! The work here is very much in the best late P-Funk mode – bassy, but never too uptight – played live with a great flourish that really shows the camaraderie of the group as a whole, and their love of trading licks back and forth with effortless ease! Much of the groove is instrumental – at times, vocals almost feel like an afterthought next to the instrumental jams – but Gary Mudbone Cooper, of P-Funk fame, does sing on a few tracks, as do other group members too. Titles include "Get On Down", "A Little Mo'Fun", "Camp Down", "Chillin With My People", "New Crack Swing", "Funky Juices", "Time 2 Get Paid", "Kon Air", "Drunk Cruisin", and "Soul Machine". Beat Konducta (Madlib)Beat Konducta Vol 1 – Movie Scenes ... LP
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A platter of Madlib beats – the first in a series of instrumental hip hop from 'Lib's Beat Konducta (formerly Beat Conductor) moniker! Madlib's production work has always had a filmic groove, and this set collects and assembles the most cinematic of said beats into an (unsurprisingly) incredible 2-sided piece. The soundscapes really kind of run the gamut of his hip hop styles – always soulful, and always funky, whether he's rocking a stone funk or an electro-modeled groove. Honestly, how much longer is it going to take for the mainstream to finally catch up with this genius!?! Tracks include "The Comeback (Madlib)", "The Payback (Gotta)", "Face The Sun (Africa)", "Stax (Strings)", "Left On Silverlake (Ride)", "Offbeat (Grooves)","Pyramids (Change)", "Eternal Broadcaster (Authentic)" and more! This time out Madlib, er, Beat Konducta is conducting beats, strings & things from India and/or otherwise East – but the way in which the beats bluntly thump is quintessential Madlib – you know it and love it from the first beat! 'Lib really breathes fresh life into this approach – going miles deeper than anyone out there doing the Bollywood-hip hop hybrid – coming up with a sound all his own. Masterful! "Onthanewthing", "Indian Deli", "Rumble", "Dancing Girls Theme", "Piano Garden", "Dark Alley Incidental Music", "Early Party", "Fifth Chant", "The Rip Off (Scene 3)", and "Sitar Ride". Despite the colonialist overtones of the project – sort of the African equivalent to Porgy & Bess, at least in terms of authenticity – this groundbreaking musical was actually a crucial moment in the development of South African jazz. It's unfortunate that the package doesn't list the players in the ensemble – but we're certain that we hear Kippie Moketsi on sax, and most of the musical backings have a feel that reminds us a lot of early work by The Blue Notes, or Hugh Masekela. Gilbert HolmstromKonfrontation – Unreleased 1968 (180 gram gold vinyl) ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 1968. New Copy ... $22.99
Never-issued work by 60s Swedish modern jazz legend Gilbert Holmstrom – one of the most freely improvising musicians on his scene at the time! The set brings together two long selections recorded in 1968 – even more far-reaching material than Gilbert's famous Quintet album a few years before – and Gilbert blows tenor and flute in a large group that has this way of swinging effortlessly between cohesion and individual explosions of sound – a bit like some of Clifford Thornton's work at times, with a starkly revolutionary sound that's quite impressive, even given the long legacy of Swedish modern jazz in the years before. Other players include Enar Jonsson and Lars Lofstedt on trumpets, Pider Avall and Stig Ekelof on trombones, Jan Forslund on baritone, Clas Fehling on piano, Claes Wallin on bass, and Anders Soderling on drums – and both selections appear here in bold, brilliant mono. The mid 70s solo record by Jorma Kaukonen – the legendary guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna – and a really great, sort of back to basics acoustic set! In direct contrast to some of the more bombastic rock coming out of the Jefferson Airplane camp in the early 70s, those one has a rootsier psych folk vibe. Holds up well decades later, too – with titles that include "Genesis", "I'll Be All Right", "Song For The North Star", "Anotehr Man Done Gone" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Kondi BandSalone ... LP
Strut (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 23.99
Very cool sounds from a wonderful pairing of sources – the ancient African thumb piano and contemporary funky production – at a level that's almost a 21st Century update of the American 70s kalimba experiments by Phil Cohran and Earth Wind & Fire! There's moments here that definitely seem to evoke the latter's mix of kalimba and clubby grooves – but in a much more stripped-down way that puts the instrument strongly upfront, to carry most of the tune – while very tasteful beats and basslines set up a groove! The mode might sound hokey – and in the wrong hands it could be – but the approach is wonderful here, and very much in the best legacy of the older Afro Funk reissues we've loved from the Strut label. Titles include "Yeanoh", "Thank You Mama", "Belle Wahalla", "Titi Dem Too Service", "Don Don Mi Money", "Kondi Instrumental", "You Wan Married", "Thogolobea (LV rmx)", "Y'Alimamy (Chief Boima rmx)", and "Without Money No Family (Chief Boima rmx)". A gem by Lee Konitz – one of his near-perfect 50s sessions for Atlantic! Lee's tone here is crisp, clear, and hauntingly fresh – modern, yet never academically so – and played with a dexterity that's incredible, but never too in love with itself to go too far. Lee KonitzReal Lee Konitz ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1957. Used ... $6.99
The title definitely gets it right – as this is the real sound of Lee Konitz – the kind of extra-special approach to alto sax that made Lee one of the true modern giants of the 50s, with an approach that nobody had ever heard before! The album captures Konitz at the height of his powers – working in an amazing group with the great Billy Bauer on guitar, whose clean tones are as perfectly formed as Lee's raspier notes on alto – both of them a perfect model of human expression, but without overstating themselves – and held together by the beautiful bass of Peter Ind, who also recorded the record. Dick Scott provides some subtle drums, and trumpeter Don Ferrara steps in on a few cuts – but the real core of the album is the interplay between Bauer and Konitz – which is completely sublime. Konitz's incredible tone come through perfectly, with a purity that's often missing from other, later albums – and titles include "Pennies In Minor", "Midway", "Straightaway", "You Go To My Head", "My Melancholy" and "Foolin Myself". Lee KonitzVery Cool ... LP
Verve, 1957. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A slightly different album than usual for Lee Konitz in the 50s – one that's got a bit harder edge, and which has Lee working in a group with a trumpet! The set's performed by a quintet that includes Konitz usual suspects Sal Mosca on piano and Peter Ind on bass, along with Shadow Wilson on drums and Don Ferrara on trumpet. Ferrara's presence in the group gives the tunes a bit more of a punch than usual for a Konitz album of the period, and Lee responds by getting a bit edgier on some of his solo work – never too modern, and still "cool" enough to be in keeping with the title – but with a more unsettled sound that we like a lot! Titles include "Sunflower", "Movin Around", "Kary's Trance", "Crazy She Calls me", and "Billie's Bounce". Great cover, too, with Lee looking out through a bunch of ice! LP, Vinyl record album

Konkere BeatsYoruba – Songs & Rhythms For The Yoruba Gods In Nigeria ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $18.99 22.98
A beautiful set of contemporary yoruba recordings – performed by the Konkere Beats group in Nigeria, and with a different vibe than some of the more familiar yoruba material from the Caribbean! The sacred sounds are full of percussion and vocal chants – and have a vibe that's maybe even more spiritual overall than some of the other modes that have appeared over the course of the diaspora – in a way that, even though contemporary, might well make this package a rootsier effort than many others we've heard before. As usual, Soul Jazz provide a lot of history in the detailed notes – but those slightly obscure the origin of the group behind this great music – who should be lauded even just for their percussionists alone, who've got a great way of moving between the rhythmic and melodic elements of the music. Titles include "Homage To Esu", "Eshere", "Bata Drums Ensemble", "Homage To Obatala", "Eulogy To Amila", "Dundun Instrumental Ensemble", "Homage To Yemoja", and "Agbe Gbe Wadele". CD

Konono No 1Lubuaku ... CD
Terp (Netherlands), 2003. Used ... $4.99
A brilliantly funky and raw live recording by the Congo's great Konono No 1 – taped in Vera, Holland on their first European tour in February of 2003, and released on Terp, the label owned by Terrie Ex of the Ex! The brittle, in-the-red likembe patterns fly by in high-velocity cycles, amped-up by the group's trademark distortion and relentlessly propelled by a three-piece rhythm section of congas, cow bells, and metal percussion – and all of it's topped by great call-and-response singing. Although the music is rooted in the ancient traditions of the Bazombe – a tribe indigenous to the area around the Angola-Conga border – the furious attack almost sounds like a cross between techno throb and punk energy. It's no surprise that the band's touring mates, the Ex, preferred to open for Konono – there's no way anyone could follow this mind-numbing stuff. Raw crackling hip hop funk beatcraft at its deepest from mighty Madlib – working in his Beat Konducta style for this third entry in the epic Madlib's Medicine Show Series! Beat Konducta In Africa is a hazy hip hop instrumental set from 'Lib (lest you thought it might be a funky compilation of rare African material) with some additional mixing from J Rocc – based on rare African vinyl. The sound is pure Madlib/Beat Konducta heady hip hop funk – recognizable as being spun from and inspired by African material, and impeccably so, with that instantly identifiable, exploratory Madlib sonic stamp. He looks far beyond Afrobeat and funk sources, with some raw funk rock beats, psych, garage and more with some trippy vocal samples – and he's building up from blueprints records originally pressed all over Africa – Zambia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Botswana and Ivory Coast. But too much mention of the source material risks making this sound like a compilation or a mix set, when it's Madlib all the way! Titles include "Motherland", "Raw Introduction To Afreaka", "Warrior's Theme", "Street Hustler", "Afritonic" (Pts 1 & 2), "Tradition", "Blackfire", "Obtaive", "Mtima", "African Bounce", "Freedom Play", "Natural Sound Waves", "Unika (Outro)" and many more. 43 tracks on the CD version, which includes 6 bonus tracks. This film music follows somewhat in the spirit of Sato's other recordings, save for the fact that the tunes are shorter – more like film cues overall – and often focus around this wonderfully cool main theme that has a riffing trumpet, followed by a riffing guitar, then laced with a sweet keyboard line – a great tune that's offered up in many variations, and which almost feels as if some UK ITV theme from the 60s was given a fresh treatment at the A&M Records studios! There's a few vocal tunes, but the album's mostly instrumental – and there's some nice twists and turns as things move along, especially towards the second half of the record, where some of the instrumentation is even more unusual. The CD is relatively short, but the package more than makes up for that with a very big booklet of notes in Japanese and photos. CD

Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 2014. Used CD & DVD ... $8.99
A really great little project – and one that's different both from the original Vivaldi composition, and from the spirit of the other releases in Deutsche Grammophon's "recomposed" series! Max Richter takes The Four Seasons completely apart, then composes some of his own music as well – in this amazing blend of styles that draws surprising links between the work's baroque roots and contemporary minimalism as well. Richter plays moog, Daniel Hope handles violin solos, and Andre De Ridder conducts the larger Konzerthaus Kammerorchester Berlin. The piece features different seasonal passages, plus some added "Shadow" tracks by Richter too. CD

Wan Chai (Hong Kong), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A mighty sweet little set – not just Hong Kong disco, but also a fair bit of soul and AOR tracks too – all of which we've never heard before! Much of the music here shows a strong American influence – right down to the English language lyrics that top almost all the tracks – and the instrumentation is often tight and funky, and put forward without the slicker production you'd find on US work of the time! In fact, a number of these groups were working big in HK clubs during the time – which was still a relatively small world – which almost makes some of the music feel like indie disco from the American underground, the kind of small label cuts that have been favorites for modern soul collectors over the years. You might want to consider this package to be an addition to that world, rather than a set of truly Chinese material from the 70s – and if you dig funky 70s soul as much as we do, you should find plenty here to love! Titles include "Hurt So Bad" by Tracy, "Take It To The Bossman" by The Reflection, "Swearin To God" by Charing Carpo, "This Is No Horse" by AJL Band, "Day Dreamin" by Julie Sue, "You're The Love" by Louie Castro, "Gotta Be The One" by The New Topnotes, "Lovin You" by Rita Kwong, and "Make Me Believe In You" by Oscar & His Orchestra. Paramount, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
John Barry's music for the blockbuster 1976 remake of King Kong – surprisingly sensitive at points, given the action on the screen of the film! Barry's got a great ear for sounds that underscore the sensitivity of the big ape – and his scoring here is a good illustration of his continued growth in the 70s – the way he moved into even more mature territory at a time when he could have easily just kept churning out hit themes. A few tunes show some 70s touches as the action ramps up, but overall most of the orchestrations have a timeless feel that's quite surprising – and which have a bit more durability than the film itself! Pye/Castle (UK), 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ray Davies is really coming into his own by the time of this third album by The Kinks – penning almost all the tunes in the set, and really starting to stretch out with some of his more unique ideas! The songs are already beginning to show that picture postcard side of British pop that was the Kinks stock in trade during their best years – and the themes and subjects are really expanded from the group's music of the previous years – already shaking off their American influence, and bringing the world a decidedly English version of rock and roll. Of course, the album does feature the group's wonderful cover of "Milk Cow Blues" – still a nice link to the earlier years – plus the Davies originals "When I See That Girl Of Mine", "I Am Free", "Till The End Of The Day", "The World Keeps Going Round", "I'm On An Island", "It's Too Late", "You Can't Win", "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", "Gotta Get The First Plane Home", and "Ring The Bells". Columbia, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful stuff – way more than just an easy instrumental album, and a great batch of exotic tunes with lots of jazzy touches! There's enough of the Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman influence here – but Rex and group take the sound a lot further, by playing like a true small combo, and swinging the tunes with a heck of a lot more jazz than you'd expect. Grooves are nice, and get quite Latiny at times – and the feel of the record almost reminds us of some of Bobby Montez work for Pacific Jazz in the late 50s. A pivotal album in the career of Lee Konitz – and one that shows him really stretching out, past his tightly arranged style of the 50s! Lee's working here in a fairly free trio setting – backed by only Sonny Dallas on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Jones plays loosely and openly on the kit, taking Lee through some great extended tracks that bristle with a sharp and modern energy that stands in great contrast to the cooler Konitz sound of the 50s – into a style that almost matches the energy of Sonny Rollins' classic Live At The Village Vanguard recordings for Blue Note. Prestige, 1949/1950. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of THE key records in the Konitz school – a full length Prestige album that brings together important material from sessions originally issued on 10" LPs! The lineup here is virtually the Konitz school – with shifting lineups that include Billy Bauer on guitar, Lenny Tristano or Sal Mosca on piano, and Warne Marsh on tenor – all working as airily and fluidly as Konitz himself! How Lee managed to achieve such unity with his groups here will forever be a mystery to us – as will the freshness of the work at the end of the 40s, especially given that it's still arguably more "modern" than much of the jazz it inspired in years to come! Titles include "Progression", "Subconscious-Lee", "Rebecca", "Sound-Lee", "Fishin Around", "Palo Alto", "Ice Cream Konitz", "You Go To My Head", and "Tautology". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Jazz (UK), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Strut (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most beautiful records we've ever heard from saxophonist Hakon Kornstad – a special project that features his smaller group with backing from the larger KORK ensemble – a Norwegian radio orchestra who bring a really special flavor to the record! But the presence of the orchestra is only part of the picture – as the songs are also all from classical and operatic sources – and feature vocal performances mixed in with the jazz phrasings of the group – singing, we assume, that's from Hakon himself – as he's billed in the credits as a "tenor" in addition to playing tenor sax! Other group members include Lars Henrik Johansen on piano and celeste and Sigbjorn Apeland on harmonium – and with that latter instrument in the mix, you can definitely be sure there's lots of interesting tones and moods at play. Atlas/Omnivore, 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mighty meeting of two modern alto giants – a set cut under the leadership of Lee Konitz, but which also features some great work from Art Pepper too! Both Pepper and Konitz were two of the most distinctive players to emerge in the 50s – both in the generation after Charlie Parker first set the horn on fire with his bebop creations – but both very individual, distinct players who took the music in fresh new directions. That distinctness really comes through here – as both Lee and Art blow together wonderfully, crossing lines and taking off on solos with a gentle swing that comes from the support of Michael Lang on piano, Bob Magnsusson on bass, and John Dentz on drums. Most tracks are very alto-heavy – in a great way – and the session was originally only ever issued in Japan, as part of the Atlas Records "West Coast Today" series. Titles include "Minor Blues In F", "Whims Of Chambers", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and "This Can't Be Love". CD features two bonus alternate takes, too! CD

Trumpeter Toshinori Kondo may have cut some avant-oriented material over the years – but this set is a different sort of record – one that's cut with his Tibetan Blue Air Liquid Band, in a playful mix of rhythms, tones, and jazz! The approach is maybe post-fusion, inflected with a bit of art rock inspiration – still with plenty of jazz-based solos, but also a very unconventional approach to the rhythms, which are sometimes sunny and bright, sometimes a bit more edgey. A subtle 70s gem from the great Lee Konitz – a record that almost returns to the spare, simple, sublime sound of his best 50s recordings – but with a few more modern edges too! Lee's alto is superb throughout – every bit as sharp as when we love it the best – and the tenor of Ted Brown provides wonderful counterpoint at many spots, moving with Lee a bit like Warne Marsh – but with a sound that shows all the lessons that both players have learned over the years. Rhythm is from a well-chosen trio of younger players, who always seem expectant to new directions – Albert Dailey on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – and titles include "Figure & Spirit", "Dream Stepper", "Smog Eyes", "April", "Without You Man", and "Dig It". A gem by Lee Konitz – one of his near-perfect 50s sessions for Atlantic! Lee's tone here is crisp, clear, and hauntingly fresh – modern, yet never academically so – and played with a dexterity that's incredible, but never too in love with itself to go too far. Key players on the session include guitarist Billy Bauer on side one, and bassist Peter Ind and pianist Sal Mosca on side two – both artists who fit Lee's vision perfectly, matching tone and color beautifully. RPM (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of grooves you might ever hope to own – a batch of tracks that come from the unlikely prog underground in the UK – but which are full of heavy basslines, riffing guitars, and funky drums! A few years earlier, the UK scene was in love with American soul and blues – which came through in famous straighter recordings of those modes overseas – but by the time of these tracks, the scene had really found its own vibe – stretching out in ways that were famously filled-out, yet still influenced strongly by more soulful modes in all the right ways! The result is a wonderful blend of soaring instrumentation, sometimes trippy production, and very groovy rhythms – sort of the hybrid that you were getting in America by groups like Chicago or Santana, but served up here by some much more obscure underground acts. The 3CD set is a fantastic overview of this wonderful moment – and features 58 tracks, along with a big booklet of notes. Titles include "The Bitch" by Gasoline Band, "Somethin You Got" by Second Hand, "Home Is Where I Belong" by Quicksand, "He's Gonna Step On You Again" by John Kongos, "Bad Times" by Paladin, "Travelling Like A Gypsy" by Hanson, "I'm A Thief" by Juicy Lucy, "So Many People" by Skin Alley, "3D Mona Lisa" by Paul Brett Sage, "One Way Glass" by Trifle, "Wake Up My Children" by Siren, "The Devil Made Me Do It" by Curtis Knight Zeus, "Drinking My Wine" by Hardin & York, "Little Message" by Jody Grind, "Eyeballs" by Blue Mink, "Celebration" by Chillum, "Weren't Born A Man" by Dana Gillespie, "I Saw An Angel" by Pentangle, "Libel" by Hard Stuff, "Pigs Foot" by Pesky Gee, "I'm A Man" by The Web, and "Indian Rope Man" by Noir. Epic/Cherry Red (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $28.99
Really lovely work from Altered Images – a group who, like many of their new wave contemporaries, is maybe best remembered for one song – even though they had a heck of a lot more to offer! That hit – the always-great "Happy Birthday" – is one of the first tracks on the set – but the box overall brings together the full range of sounds from the group – the kind of catchy new wave tunes that always had slight crossover potential in the early 80s – but which have sometimes been lost to the sands of time, because the music is either not edgey enough to be remembered by the indie crowd, nor slick enough to yield long mainstream success. You might put these guys somewhere in a space with Icicle Works, The The, or early Talk Talk – music that's tuneful, but still has much rawer guitars than the commercial big names of the time – a definite sense of post-punk production, even though the work came out on a major label. The package features the group's three full albums, the bonus album of 12" mixes, and lots of singles too – with titles that include "Happy Birthday", "Real Toys", "Legionnaire", "Beckoning Strings", "A Days Wait", "Midnight", "Leave Me Alone", "Who Cares", "Jeepster", "Pinky Blue", "See Those Eyes", "Little Brown Head", "See You Later", "Funny Funny Me", "Disco Pop Stars", "Bring Me Closer", "Surprise Me", "Love To Stay", "Now That You're Here", "Thinking About You", "Stand So Quiet", "Happy Birthday (dance mix)", "Love To Stay (dance mix)", "See Those Eyes (ext mix)", "Jump Jump/Think That It Might (segued dance mix)", and "Don't Talk To Me About Love (ext dance mix)". An unusual electronic project from mid 70s Finland – a collaboration between Ake Anderssonin and Antero Honkasen on music inspired by the paintings of Reidar Sarestoniemi – a relatively abstract artist, as you might guess from the sound of the proceedings! Most of the work here has a very open, spacious quality – not really Eno ambient, but definitely a looser, lighter take on the analogue modes of the previous decade – especially some of the more academic-oriented recordings. The crowning achievement of Basa Basa – a Ghanian group led by a pair of twin brothers who were strongly influenced by the scene in Lagos in the 70s – but who also kept a deeply spiritual sound of their own! That depth can be noted in the title here, and in the very positive message titles of the tunes – and it also really comes through in the creation of the music – which feels like a very joyous, collaborative experience! Cool bits of keyboards sneak in and out of the grooves – bringing these unusual electric currents to the music, almost in a moogy club mode – but given more of a West African spin, which has the electronic bits almost moving things to the heavens with their energy. Fantastic throughout – maybe more like underground Cali club of the late 70s than anything you might expect – and titles include "African Soul Power", "Love Love Love", "Together We Win", "Shey An Kuri", "Black Light", and "Konya". The mix of harp and funk is very much in the best style of the Dorothy Ashby albums for Chess/Cadet – but the minimal approach is a bit different, too – and makes for an even more exotic funk vibe overall. Titles include "Love In Hong Kong", "Soft Dream", "Attenzione", "Year Of The Funky", "Kang Ding Love", "Bossa Rossa", "Water Lotus", and "Black Nylon". CD

BKOMali Foli Coura ... LP
Buda (France), 2017. New Copy ... About June 15, 2018 (delayed)
A very cool group from Mali – one who have some of the older currents that you'd associate with the scene, but served up with a nicely contemporary crackle! The vocals often have those bluesy inflections that have risen up strongly in west Africa – but the instrumentation also has a nicely electrified current alongside rootsy percussion – especially when moments of distortion come in to play, almost with the blown-out quality you'd know from Konono, although maybe less processed overall. There's also a lot of vocal interplay between lead singer Fassara Sacko and other members of the group – on titles that include "Tangwanana", "Salia", "Stange Koreduga", "Dirty Donso", "From Segou To Nightmare", and "Rougeot" – plus the very funky "Mali Liberela", which almost has some James Brown-ish guitar! Plenty of bone-shaking going on here – thanks to work by this heavy power trio, recording in Chicago with all the harder-burning energy of the scene! Visitor Paal Nilssen-Love is on drums and percussion – playing with all the incredible twists and turns that always make his performances such a delight – while Mars Williams plays a variety of reeds, and Kent Kessler reminds us again why his hands on the bass are always a force to be reckoned with! Ken BootheFreedom Street (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Real Gone, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 22.99
A Trojan Records classic from the mighty Ken Boothe – an album set to just the right sort of grooves for his beautifully soulful vocals! The record's definitely got the political vibe you'd expect from the cover and title, but maybe even more compelling is the way that Ken can still sound heartbreaking and personal when delivering the lyrics – as if the social change around him was a very individual thing, which somehow makes the message of the music even more powerful. Leslie Kong produced, and most tracks are at a slow-stepping rocksteady pace – with titles that include "Now I Know", "Drums Of Freedom", "Love & Unity", "Freedom Street", "Why Baby Why", and "Mr Wind". David BowieNew Career In A New Town – 1977 to 1982 (11CD box set) ... CD
Parlophone, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 11CD ... $119.99 149.98
Amazing music from one of our most-treasured stretches of David Bowie's career – that creatively-fertile time when he escaped to West Berlin, hid from the mainstream, and made some groundbreaking records with Brian Eno – then returned to the limelight to remind us all that he was still a hell of a force to be reckoned with! The set includes everything post-Thin White Duke, and pre-Let's Dance – a run of music that's still shaping new sounds on this planet all these many years later. The set begins with Low – the mix of experimental instrumentals and subtle vocal tracks that was a complete change from Ziggy Stardust – and follows with Heroes, Lodger, and Scary Monsters & Super Creeps – all albums that reintroduce some sense of song and lyrical interplay, but at a level that clearly indicates how important Bowie was to the generation of post-punk and new wave as his earlier work was to psych, prog, and glam! But the package isn't just a standard collection of albums – because along with those four studio records, it also features the live album Stage, presented here in two different full mixes – plus a new 2017 mix of Lodger, which really increases the edge. There's also a special Heroes EP, with all the different language versions of the song – and a very cool Re:Call 3 album – which features all the singles that were issued at the time, plus other rare material – and Bowie's very unique take on Bertolt Brecht's Baal. Titles on this album include "Alabama Song", "Crystal Japan", "Under Pressure", "Remembering Marie A", "The Drowned Girl", "The Dirty Song", "Cat People", and even his "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" duet with Bing Crosby. As with other entries in this complete Bowie series, the presentation is wonderful – album sleeve replicas, great packaging, and lots of notes – kind of a treasure, even if you already own some of the records! Expansion (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $14.99
An all star section of the Brit funky soul scene comes Full Circle – with members of Beggar & Co, Incognito, Hi Tension, Central Line and more – on a sweet batch tunes with an upbeat, jazzy groove, too! The opening "BFA Theme (Let The Music Blow Your Mind)" kicks the set off with a theme of togetherness that holds strong throughout, with lead vocals that are often shared by the group in harmony. Kenny Wellington & Paul McLean handle a lot of the songwriting & production, sharing vocals with sax player Patrick McLean, guitar player Breeze McKrieth, sax & flute player David Baptiste, and trombone player Jerome Harper. The Association also includes Steve Salvari & Peter Hinds on keys, Billy Osborne on percussion, and Ernie McKone on bass – with guests Simon Law, Toby Barker and others. Dave BrubeckAll The Things We Are ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1976. Used ... $6.99
One of the best Dave Brubeck albums from later years – and one of the hippest! The record is noteworthy for its pairing of Anthony Braxton and Lee Konitz – the former a rising star at the time, influenced strongly by the latter in his roots – showcased here in some rare moments of Braxton straight-aheadness! Brubeck's contribution is heard most strongly on the album's extended trio "Jimmy Van Huesen Medley" – played by Dave with Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. But we're most partial to the saxophone tunes – Konitz playing a spare duet with Brubeck on "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", soloing with the group on "Like Someone In Love", duetting with Braxton on "All The Things You Are" – and stepping back to let Anthony play with Dave on a version of "In Your Own Sweet Way". Really great stuff throughout – and a unique Brubeck moment! CD

Tim BuckleyGreetings From LA ... LP
Warner/Straight, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
A later effort from Tim Buckley with a bigger sound and more of a straight ahead approach – with a big nod in the groove direction and some R&B creeping in! In lesser hands, Greetings From LA could be considered more of a "commercial" album than the unpredictable stylistic variances of Tim's earlier records, but his vocals and depth of passion keeps it a riveting experience. Rolling boogie piano, some vamping organ, groovy strings, and even some female chorus backing vocals bring elements of 70s soul and juke joint sounds into the mix – while Buckley's emoting is on par with earlier work – even if some of the lyrics are kind of on the bawdy side. Includes "Move With Me", "Get On Top", "Sweet Surrender", "Night Hawkin'", "Devil Eyes", "Hong Kong Bar" and "Make It Right". LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Clarke, Red Garland, & OthersJazz From Carnegie Hall – Live In Paris 1 Octobre 1958 ... CD

American jazzmen, playing in Paris – and working in the sort of all-star jam session mode you'd know from the Jazz At The Philharmonic recordings of the 50s! The format here is similar – some key players, in modes that run from swing to bop to more modern jazz – all brought together in an amazing display of spontaneous dexterity and individual imagination! This CD marks the first time this music has ever been issued, and the recording quality is great – really at a level that matches the best of those older Verve concerts – and the group is an unusual septet, with Lee Konitz on alto, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding on trombones, Phineas Newborn and Red Garland on pianos, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include nice open takes of "Dahoud", "Afternoon In Paris", "Stardust", "This Can't Be Love", "Bernie's Tune", "Bag's Groove", "It's Alright With Me", "Laverne Walk", "Blue Lou", and "Star Eyes". ✨✧ Dennis CoffeyEvolution ... LP
Sussex, 1971. Very Good+ ... $29.99
A groundbreaking little record – and one that set a whole new standard for guitar funk in the 70s! By the time of this set, Dennis Coffey had been playing, arranging, and producing all over the Detroit soul scene for many years – so it wasn't like he really needed a hit to get paid or anything – but the record forever marked him as a guitar player to be reckoned with, and is a perfect showcase for Coffey's fuzzed-out funky style – instantly recognizable and still extremely popular today! The album contains the monster breakbeat cut "Scorpio" – kind of a seminal text of hip hop – plus plenty of other groovers like "Getting It On", "Garden Of The Moon", "Big City Funk", and "Sad Angel". Dandy's Dandy (Johnny Rodriguez Jr)Dandy's Dandy – A Latin Affair ... CD
Latin Percussion Ventures, 1979. Used ... $18.99
An obscure but excellent session – recorded at the end of the 70s with some of the best players in the New York salsa underground! The music is extremely vibrant – and the styles of the tracks range from hard Afro-Cuban percussion grooving to tight Latin jazz in a classic mode – with instrumentation that ranges from pachanga-styled flute and violin, to some harder-jamming grooves with a lot more piano in the lead. Production has that raw, but clear sound that we love so much in the Latin Percussion albums of the time – a groove that's very different than that of Fania or Tico – and Sonny Bravo plays piano, Rene Lopez is on trumpet, Nicky Marrera is on timbales, Dick Meza plays flute, Eddie Montalvo plays conga, and Mario Rivera is on saxes. Includes great Latin Jazz versions of "Tune Up", "Manteca", and "April In Paris" – plus "Jo Ca Nic", "Son De La Loma", and "Konkoina". CD

Prestige, Mid 50s. Used 8 CDs ... $42.99
Wow! An incredible collection of seminal recordings from one of the most important figures in modern music! All of Miles' recordings from the Prestige label in one place, bound up in a well annotated box, and given a complete discography and lots of excellent photos. It's almost too much astounding jazz in one place! The list of sidemen and great LPs is almost too long to go over, but in addition to Miles' remarkable Cookin'/Relaxin'/Walkin'/Workin' sessions, there's all of the material issued as Bags' Groove, with the Modern Jazz Giants and loads more, and some of the stellar accompanists includes John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz, Red Garland, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Milt Jackson, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, and Max Roach, just to name a few. There's far too many tracks to list here, but there's takes of "Blue Room", "Conception", "Compulsion", "Miles Ahead", "Blue Haze", "Airegin", "Bag's Groove", "The Man I Love", "Green Haze", "Dr Jackle", "The Theme", "Trane's Blues", "'Round About Midnight", "Half Nelson", "My Funny Valentine" and loads more! Desmond DekkerYou Can Get It If You Really Want It (withb onus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy ... About July 13, 2018
There's never been anyone like Desmond Dekker – not back in the day, when he was one of the biggest ambassadors for the Jamaican scene – nor for many years later, when his unique blend of soul and reggae were still the most go-to sounds for folks around the globe! Desmond's got a voice that almost rivals that of Sam Cooke for its sweetness and soul – and it's perfectly crafted onto grooves that are far hipper than the usual ska and rocksteady of the time – and which have this bubbling intensity that was maybe even more important an early introduction to reggae than the hits of Bob Marley that would come along a few years later. A record like this is key testament to Dekker's genius – great production from Leslie Kong, and not a bad track in the bunch – titles that include "You Can Get It If You Really Want", "Peace On The Land", "Cindy", "Perseverance", "I Believe", "That's The Way Life Goes", "Coomyah", and "You Got Soul". Funk IncFunk Inc ... LP
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
A killer instrumental album of hard organ grooves and funky basslines! This was the album that broke Funk Inc out of their Indianapolis scene, and made them a force to be forever reckoned with in the history of funky jazz. The album grooves hard in the same sound as some of the classic work by Prestige jazz funk giants like Rusty Bryant, Charles Earland, or Ivan Boogaloo Jones – but it's almost even tighter than their work, because the Funk Inc combo as a tightly woven group of players who'd been together for a number of years. The record's filled with monster cuts that you'll recognize immediately, like the group's famous "Kool is Back", which has a monster sample on the intro, and hard heavy Kool & The Gang grooves throughout. Other tracks include "Sister Janie", "The Whipper", and "Bowlegs". LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter Gordon, Red Rodney, Von Freeman, et alCharlie Parker Memorial Concert ... LP
Cadet, 1970. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
In Chicago, the cult of Bird fanatics probably lived harder than in other cities – and in the few decades after Charlie Parker's death, the city was host to annual Bird Memorial concerts during the month of August. This obscure 2LP set on Cadet does a good job of documenting the energy and comraderie that went into those sessions – as it captures tunes from four different performances during the series, all recorded at Chicago's North Park Hotel. Players include Dexter Gordon, Howard McGhee, Vi Redd, Lee Konitz, Art Hoyle, Von Freeman, Jodie Christian, Roy Haynes, Muhal Richard Abrams, Eddie Jefferson, and Kenny Dorham – and the set's a great crossection of players – from the bop to the less obvious Parker-philes – in a strong illustration of Bird's still-consistent influence even at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Ornithology", "Yardbird Suite", "Disappointed", "Parker's Mood", "Now's The Time", and "Billie's Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album
