✨✧ King TubbyConcrete Jungle Dub ... LP
Dub Store (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A 70s dub masterpiece – and one of the records that really set the standard for the genre! Producer Winston Riley first rose to reggae fame in the Techniques, but here he's a master of the instrumental mode – working with a group of all-star musicians at Harry J's and King Tubby's Studio – all to craft these spare, bassy grooves that are completely out of sight! There's a sense of understatement here that separates the music from later dub work – and the record's a great reminder that sometimes less is more – especially when it comes to exploring the deeper sides of the sonic spectrum. Titles include "Chalist Dub", "Staga Dub", "Dread Dub", "Mistry Maker Dub", "Red Gold & Green Dub", "Peace & Love Dub", and "Who Is The Dub". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ King Tubby & The AgrovatorsDubbing In The Back Yard ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Extremely hypnotic dub from King Tubbys & The Agrovators – and a record with a sound that's every bit as stripped-down and laidback as you might guess from the image on the cover! The approach here gets right to the core of instrumental dub – and tunes are very stark and spare – with a completely sublime focus on splashy drums and deeply rumbling bass – often with hardly any other elements to set things off! Bunny Lee produced the tracks with a very uncluttered approach – none of the heavy mixing that might have lead to more abstract version cuts – and just a heavy focus on the bad-stepping, slow-moving elements are the core. Titles include "Relaxing Mood", "Hot Weather", "Mountains Rain", "Hideaway", "Natural Glow", "Plantation Run", and "Summers Eve". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousFirehouse Revolution – King Tubby's Production In The Digital Era 1985 to 1989 ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
While everyone else is focusing on the 70s, Pressure Sounds brings their reissues into the digital age with this great set of mid to late 80s tracks cut at Tubby's for the groundbreaking Firehouse label. Like the funky electro tracks coming out of NY and Detroit in the mid 80s, the best Jamaican producers were embracing the host of new electronic and digital sounds at their disposal, and crafting their own new brand of funky reggae, that would later become ragga. This compiulation is a nice set of tracks that are just now starting to become collector's items on the original singles, seminal tracks like Anthony Red Rose's "Temper", "Under Me Fat Thing" & "Two Big Bull Inna One Pen", Lloyd Hemming's "Rude Boy" & King Kong's "Babylon". 14 tracks in all! VariousOnce Upon A Time At King Tubby's ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Woah! Don't get caught in the crossfire! I Roy takes on Prince Jazzbo, and luckily for us, Tubby's not taking sides, cutting mad versions and heavy dubs as the two Dee Jays trade barbs, rhymes and witty rejoinders for a battle on wax that lasted quite a few rounds! This great set by Pressure Sounds not only documents the toasting, boasting and roasting fest that the two heavyweight mic wielders laid to wax across now sought-after 45s, it showcases Striker Lee's production talents and Tubby's well known dub wizardry. For the most part, rhythms are laid down by the Aggrovators, with a couple Jo Jo Hookim produced cuts by the Revolutionaries, but it's all fantastic material, and the set has great notes giving background on the whole battle. 15 tracks in all, including "Do You Love Me?" by Johnny Clarke, "Straight To Jazzbo's Head", "Padlock", "Jazzbo Have Fe Run" and "Straight To Derrick Morgan's Head" by I Roy, "Straight To I Roy's Head" and "Gal Boy I Roy" by Prince Jazzbo, "I Roy The Chiney Commer Around" by Derrick Morgan, and "Straight To I Roy's Big Mouth" and "The Roots Of Dub" by King Tubby & The Aggrovators. ✨✧ ProphetsKing Tubby's Prophecies Of Dub ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album of dub from the 70s – and one that's got as much mystery on its cover as it's got magic in the grooves! Despite the name of King Tubby on the front, the real genius at the controls is Pat Kelly – who's got a different, but equally wicked way with working up a track – in this case, backing tracks from Bunny Striker Lee, which are given all sorts of cool changes in the snare, echo on the core drum parts, and nicely spacey touches all around the edges – almost outer space dub, of a mode that would come on more strongly a few years later! Pat Kelly claimed a lot of influence from jazz, and you can definitely hear it in the snare – on titles that include "Earth Fear", "Tradition Skank", "Black Out", "Serious Rebellion", "Bad Man Skank", "Was Alive", "Gun Man From Water House", and "Babylon Red". Nat BirchallTradition Disc In Dub – Nat Birchall Meets Al Breadwinner ... LP
Ancient Archive Of Sound (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $32.99
A fantastic album in the new dub tradition that UK saxophonist Nat Birchall has been exploring – recorded modes that are very different than his spiritual jazz albums, but equally cool overall! The vibe here is maybe like some lost date recorded at King Tubby's – but with more of a jazz element in the mix – as Birchall plays tenor and flute, plus piano, melodica, organ, bass, and percussion – all in this swirling mix that's created by Al Breadwinner – who's not only the producer and mixer, but adds in his own organ, drums, guitar, piano, melodica, and percussion! The group are joined by Vin Gordon – whose trombone is an excellent balance in the sound – and David Fullwood adds in some trumpet lines too, which furthers the jazz elements in the overall sound. Titles include "Hornsman Rock", "Dub In The Heavens (parts 1 & 2)", "Struggle Dub", "Organizer Version", "Olaudah Equiano Dub", "Giza Dub", and "Congo Drum Style". LP, Vinyl record album

Jacob MillerWho Say Jah No Dread ... LP
Greensleeves, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 16.98
Beautiful sounds from the mighty Jacob Miller – material recorded with Augustus Pablo in the years before Miller went onto greater fame in Inner Circle – and with a rootsy vibe that's still extremely powerful all these many years later! Pablo's at the height of his talents here – able to hit just the best righteous modes, but without ever going over the top – at a level that seems completely effortless, and which really empowers the message in Miller's vocals! The set's overflowing with gems – and titles include "Keep On Knocking", "Each One Teach One", "Who Say Jah No Dread", "False Rasta", "Baby I Love You So", and "Girl Named Pat" – plus the dubs "Knocking Version", "Hungry Town Skank", "King Tubby Meet Rockers Uptown", "Jah Dread", "Each One Teach One Version", and "Girl Named Pat Version". ✨✧ ScientistScientific Dub ... LP
Clocktower, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99
Benchmark Scientist dub – great stuff recorded and mixed at King Tubby's near the end of the 70s – and it's some of tightest, heaviest dubs of the period! Scientist works over some of the heftiest Aggrovator sides on this legendary set – one of favorite dub records, period! One particular standout is a great take on the "Drum Song" rhythm – but the whole set is inmpeccable! Other titles include "Taxi To Baltimore Dub", "Satta Dread Dub", "Every Dub Shall Scrub", "East Of Scientist Corner (II Pieces)", "Words Of Dub", "Blacka Shade Of Dub" and "Just Say Dub. . .Who". 10 tracks in all. ✨✧ Sly & The Revolutionaries with Jah ThomasBlack Ash Dub (180 gram vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The mighty Sly Dunbar, working here on drums, in some very heady company – a wicked dub-heavy group that includes longtime partner Robbie Shakespear on bass – plus Gladdy Anderson on piano, Ansel Collins on organ, and Bingy Bunny and Bo Peep on guitars! The music is raw and stripped-down – produced by Jah Thomas at Channel One, mixed by Prince Jammy at King Tubby's – but with a rock-solid vibe that grabs you musically in a way that all of these many references hardly do justice! At a time when Sly was breaking big in the mainstream, working on lots of imported productions too, the groove is still very down to earth, and back to the amazing sound that he and his confreres first brought to the Kingston scene much earlier in the 70s. All the songs are titled in tribute to intoxicating substances –and include "Marijuana", "Herb", "Collie", "Lambsbread", "Rizla", "Acapulco Gold", "Black Ash", "White Rum", "Cocaine", and "LSD". Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 LPs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rarities from the mighty Yabby You – with some remarkably strong, though little heard rootsy dub from Yabby and his extended brethren – including some recently discovered bits! The title Deeper Roots works on dual fronts. It's got pretty rare material, discovered by the always deep diggers at Pressure Sounds – but the material has deeper spiritual resonance, too – with a nice Rasta vibe running throughout! Yabby is joined by King Tubby, Barrington Spence, the rarely recorded Prince Pampidoo, King Manuel, The Prophets and others. Includes "Valley Of Joeasaphat" and "Joeasaphat Rock" with Smith & The Prophets, "Don't Touch I Dread" with Barington Spence", "Tutch Dub" with Prophet All Stars, "Dip Them Bedward" with Prince Pampidoo, "Dub Them Bedward" with Prophet All Stars, "Forward On The Track" with King Miguel, "Caymamas Rock" with King Miguel & The Prophets, "Cleo's Dub" with Hot City Allstars and more. ✨✧ Yabby You & The ProphetsBeware Dub (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from Yabby You – one that's heavy on the mixing talents of King Tubby and Prince Jammy – so much so that Yabby's vocals are nicely buried in the overall sound, wrapped up in the heavy bass, riffing guitar, and bad-stepping drums – and couched in a wonderfully echoey style overall! The album's kind of a casebook study of the approach at its best – and is expanded here with a few bonus tracks and unissued numbers – which gives the whole thing double the power of the original! Titles include "Beware", "Peace", "Deliverance", "Prophets", "Feel Alright", "Praises", "Selassie I Memorial Version", "Sensimena", "Conquering Lion (dub plate mix)", "God Is Watching You (dub plate mix)", and "Marshall Dreadlocks Version". ✨✧ ScientistScientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires ... LP
Greensleeves/Dub Mir, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Scientist spins out on a dub-driven power boat – scanning the swamps to drive out the vampires and a host of other ghouls too – all while reinventing Jamaican music in the process! The record's filled with lots of cool electric elements – those weird production effects and electronic doodles that make the music of Scientist so revolutionary – especially when spun out over a still-familiar backdrop supplied by Roots Radics, with a core essence that's very much from the pre-digital world of Jamaican music. Rhythm tracks were done at Channel One, and Scientist mixed the set at King Tubbys – a host of dub mini-masterpieces that include "The Voodoo Curse", "Dance Of The Vampires", "Blood On His Lips", "Cry Of The Werewolf", "the Mummy's Shroud", "The Corpse Rises", "Night Of The Living Dead", "Your Teeth In My Neck", "Plague Of Zombies", and "Ghost Of Frankenstein". TenderloniousPiccolo – Tender Plays Tubby ... LP
Jazz Detective (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $29.99
A really fantastic album from this hip British reedman – and maybe his strongest jazz album to date! As you might guess from the title, Tenderlonious plays the music of Tubby Hayes here – taking on older songs by the 60s British jazz giant, served up in small combo modes, with flute in the lead instead of a tenor! The group's got a really deep, rich sound – with creative instrumentation from Hamish Balfour on Fender Rhodes, piano, and vibes – plus Nick Walters on trumpet, Aidan Shepherd on accordion, Pete Martin on bass, and Tim Carnegie on drums – all players who really get that very hip groove of Tubby at his best – particularly the style of his mid 60s live albums on Fontana. There's no processing or other effects – as on other Tenderlonious albums – just straight jazz, beautifully done – and also a bit of soprano and piccolo from the leader too. There's just four tracks on the record – this is more of an EP than an LP – but the whole thing is superb, and titles include "Down In The Village", "Raga", "In The Night", and "Trenton Place". ✨✧ Roy BuddInternecine Project ... LP
Pye/Trunk (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $29.99
That's an angry-looking James Coburn on the cover – a tipoff that you're in for something really special on the record – one of the best-ever soundtracks from the mighty Roy Budd, the man who also gave the world the superb score for Get Carter! There's a few elements here that echo the music for that famous film – including some inventive percussion, moody basslines, and a great use of space – and the lineup of musicians features some surprising contributions from important British jazz artists – including Kenny Baker on trumpet and Tubby Hayes on tenor, Frank Barber on percussion, and Jeff Clyne on bass – plus Roy himself on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, harpsichord, and piano! This is the first-ever extended presentation of music from the soundtrack, a superb treat throughout – with titles that include "Mr Easy", "Death In The Shower", "Alright Alex", "Find A Solution", "The Deal", "Never Think Twice", "Waiting For Murder", "Main Theme", "Somebody's Going To Have To Kill Him", and "Borrowed Time". ✨✧ Bird Curtis QuintetNeeds B (with bonus CD & download) ... LP
Jazzaggression (Finland), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic gem from the British scene of the late 60s – music by a group who played in relative obscurity, but who were very much at the top of their game! The quintet have a tenor/trumpet balance that's something of a legacy from earlier UK groups – such as those with Ian Carr and Don Rendell, or maybe some of the Tubby Hayes combos – a mode that's swinging modern jazz, with lots of original writing by the members of the group – packing a lot into a little, but with a vibe that's totally great – and very individual! The songs burst out with a great sense of tone and color – often a hint of modal structure in the rhythm – performed by the lineup of Ian Bird on tenor and alto, John Curtis on trumpet, Ray Shea on piano, Daryl Runswick on bass, and Tim Wolley on drums. All group members, save Wolley, contributed material – and titles include "Needs B", "Johnny Plonk", "Bossa For Bev", "Nothign Yet", "Birthday Girl", "The Buttertree", and "Vanessa". Also, the set was never issued at the time – this is its debut! LP, Vinyl record album
