✨✧ Moreno Veloso + 2 (Domenico/Kassin)Maquina De Escrever Musica (Music Typewriter) ... LP
Hannibal/Luaka Bop, 2001. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. Tracks include "Sertao", "Deusa Do Amor", "Esfinge", "Rio Longe", "Nenhuma", "I'm Wishing", "Das Partes", and "Para Xo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Domenico + 2 (Moreno Veloso/Kassin)Sincerely Hot ... LP
Ping Pong/Luaka Bop, 2002. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An excellent set by the same group that served up the Moreno Veloso album Musical Typewriter – led here by drummer Domenico, but featuring Moreno on vocals and other instrumentation, plus the mighty Kassin – who really emerges here as one of the freshest talents in Brazilian music for the 21st Century! The album's even better than Musical Typewriter – quite complicated, with a blend of electronics and gentle acoustic instrumentation, touched up with a few funky rhythms in spots, but not too much so that it gets in the way of the great vocals. Titles include "Solar", "Comigo", "Possibilidade", "Alegria Vai", "Aeroporto 77", "Tema Da Zorra", and "Despedida". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kassin +2 (Moreno Veloso/Domenico)Futurismo ... LP
Trama/Luaka Bop, 2006. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. Arnaldo AntunesAcustico MTV ... CD
MTV (Brazil), 2012. Used ... $19.99
One of the warmest records we've heard in years from Arnaldo Antunes – a set that no doubt gets some of its feel from the acoustic MTV setting of the performance – but one that also has a softer side of Antunes' songwriting as well! There's a wonderfully subtle vibe to the record – a feel that's almost more in the Kassin/Moreno Veloso camp than some of Arnaldo's other work – and the record actually features a guest appearance from Moreno – plus other artists who include Curumin, Nina Becker, and Liminha. Titles include "A Casa E Sua", "Engrenagem", "Pop Zen", "O Seu Olhar", "Alma", "Sem Voce", "Se Assim Quiser", and "Musica Para Ouvrir". CD

Forro In The DarkSandcastle ... CD
Nacional, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
Forro In The Dark sound better here than ever before – working with producer Kassin, on a set of tracks recorded both in Brooklyn and in Rio – with a vibe that's maybe more faithful to their Brazilian inspiration than any of their previous records! The core trio handle a fantastic amount of percussion, guitar, and reed instruments – with modes that start with the forro of their name, but also branch out into other Brazilian styles – and have some of the captivating qualities of the best independent acts from Brazil in recent years. Kassin plays on most of the record, about half the tracks feature vocals, and titles include "I Wanna Know", "Forro Da Casa Grande", "Ou Sim", "Roca De Pedra", "Craudineia No Forro", "Voce Nao E Insubstituviel", and "Drifting Away". Nina MirandaFreedom Of Movement ... CD
Six Degrees, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
You might remember Nina Miranda for her great work with Da Lata years ago – but since that time, she's only evolved even more as an artist – to a point where she's really finding her voice here in a freshly creative way! The record's got a very compelling mix of acoustic and electric elements – some of the beats you might expect, but also mixed with more live percussion, and even some field recordings and other elements that really create a deeper texture of sound next to Nina's lovely vocals. The record also features help from some great talents from the underground – including Kassin, Chris Franck, Xaver Fischer, and others who've helped bridge the gap between Brazilian roots and 21st Century expression. Titles include "Marsh Mellow Dreams", "Whole Of London", "Megalopolis", "The Cage", "Silken Horse", "Capoeira 2020", "Play", "Amazonia Amor", "Soundtrack To Venus Night Boat", and "The Surfer". CD

Northern Spy, 2017. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
This hip Chicago duo presents a whole new side of their music – on a really special record put together in Brazil – with help from sonic genius Kassin – who really seems to help shape the sound of the set! Core energy comes from Darin Gray of Tweedy and Glenn Kotche of Wilco – but there's also a lot more Brazilian musicians on the record too – adding in acoustic guitar, percussion, voices, and some effects too – all woven together in a way that's beyond any of the roots that might inform the music, and which certainly feels like way more than just a few American musicians trying to borrow a bit from Brazil! Titles include "Bota Fogo", "Jornada Inteira", "Ilusionismo Da Arvore Da Cerebracao", "Drums Equal Percussion", "Truta Samba", and "Espaco". CD

VariousTribute To Caetano Veloso ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2012. Used ... $12.99
A wonderful tribute to Caetano Veloso – put together by a really surprising range of artists! The tunes are all classic Veloso compositions – Brazilian nuggets that have been making our lives wonderful for years – and they get fresh reinterpretations by a range of artists that includes The Magic Numbers, Beck, Ceu, Chrissie Hynde, Kassin, Moreno Veloso, Tulipa Ruiz, Beck, Mariana Aydar, Seu Jorge, Toninho Horta, and others – a great mix of Brazilian and American artists who really show the far-reaching influence Caetano's had over the decades. Most numbers are pretty well done – never too commercial, and surprisingly sensitive to the lyrics, while also offering up fresh twists with their own arrangements. Titles include "The Empty Boat" by Chrissy Hynde with Moreno, Kassin, and Domenico – plus "London London" by Os Mutantes, "Michaelangelo Antonioni" by Beck, "Eclipse Oculto" by Ceu, "You Don't Know Me" by The Magic Numbers, "Araca Blue" by Marian Aydar, "Alguem Cantando" by Momo, "Quem Me Dera" by Devendra Banhart & Rodrigo Amarante, and "Peter Gast" by Seu Jorge, Toninho Horta, and Arismar Espirito Santo.
