Cometa (Kassin)Cometa ... LP
Nublu, 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 20.99
A totally wonderful project from the mad musical world of Brazilian genius Kassin – a set of all-instrumental tracks by the group Cometa – a combo who seem equally at home in the worlds of jazz and funk, as they do in a much wider territory of music, too! The record bristles with so many elements at once, each new track seems to be a fresh surprise – as the group will slide into moments that echo older soundtracks, or surf instrumentals, or even some of the more contemporary modes that Kassin has given us in his projects of the past decade or so – but fused into a more live, spontaneous energy by this group! The lineup includes lots of excellent keyboard lines and guitar work (the latter from Kassin), plus drums and guitar – yet despite these familiar elements, the overall sound is quite unique, and very fresh. Titles include "Jogada Senil", "Marini Squad", "Antenna", "Ashes", "Troy", "Liquid Jesus", "Bad Weather", and "Double Dip". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Domenico + 2 (Moreno Veloso/Kassin)Sincerely Hot ... LP
Ping Pong/Luaka Bop, 2002. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
An excellent set by the same group that served up the Moreno Veloso album Musical Typewriter – led here by drummer Domenico, but featuring Moreno on vocals and other instrumentation, plus the mighty Kassin – who really emerges here as one of the freshest talents in Brazilian music for the 21st Century! The album's even better than Musical Typewriter – quite complicated, with a blend of electronics and gentle acoustic instrumentation, touched up with a few funky rhythms in spots, but not too much so that it gets in the way of the great vocals. Titles include "Solar", "Comigo", "Possibilidade", "Alegria Vai", "Aeroporto 77", "Tema Da Zorra", and "Despedida". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Moreno Veloso + 2 (Domenico/Kassin)Maquina De Escrever Musica (Music Typewriter) ... LP
Hannibal/Luaka Bop, 2001. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. Tracks include "Sertao", "Deusa Do Amor", "Esfinge", "Rio Longe", "Nenhuma", "I'm Wishing", "Das Partes", and "Para Xo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KassinSonhando Devagar (with download) ... LP
20/20/20, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with bonus download – and 3D glasses for looking at the cover!)

✨✧ Kassin +2 (Moreno Veloso/Domenico)Futurismo ... LP
Trama/Luaka Bop, 2006. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. Gal CostaEstratosferica ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2015. New Copy ... $16.99
Gal Costa looks surpisingly youthful on the cover – and she's also sounding more youthful in her music than we've heard in many years – thanks to a key collaboration with Kassin and Moreno Veloso! Both of the younger musicians really find a fresh space for Gal to work with – a nice shift away from some of the more staid, mature modes of her other recent records – and a style that brings out all the creativity that made us fall in love with Costa so many years ago! This shift isn't a return to Tropicalia, but instead a move towards that playful, genre-stepping territory that you'll find in both Veloso and Kassin's music, especially the latter. One of Costa's best in years – and with titles that include "Amor Se Aclame", "Anuviar", "Espelho D'Agua", "Ecstasy", "Jabitaca", and "Sem Medo Nem Esperanca". CD

Vanessa Da MataSim (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Discos 605, 2007/2009. Used ... $3.99
A great set of soulful work from the contemporary Brazilian scene – a record that's made even better by the thoughtful production touches of Kassin! A few notches the wrong way, and Vanessa Da Mata might be a too-smooth pop singer – but in this setting, she's got a warmth that comes through strongly – a slightly organic way of putting over a tune that really sparkles in the blend of acoustic instruments and electric elements that dance together nicely in the backings. The grooves are often nicely mellow or midtempo, and Da Mata's got a depth that goes way beyond some of the weaker Brazilian voices you might hear hanging onto remix projects in recent years. Titles include "Vermelho", "Bau", "Boa Sorte/Good Luck", "Absurdo", "Meu Deus", "Minha Heranca Uma Flor", and "Illegais". And for what it's worth, Ben Harper even guests on one track! US release includes the bonus English versions of "Vermelho", "Amado", and "Boa Sorte". CD
