Ludovic Navarre (aka St Germain)From Detroit To St Germain ... CD
F Communications (France), Early/Mid 90s. Used ... $5.99
Early work by Ludovic Navarre – an artist who's now known to the world as St Germain, the funky French house artist who's done so much great work with Blue Note samples! This set brings together earlier singles by Navarre – titles either issued under his name or under that of St Germain – very much in the tradition of recent work, but with a rougher, and perhaps more experimental approach to the groove. Titles include "Alabama Blues", "Black Man", "Jack On Groove", "French", "Move", "How Do You Plead", "Dub Experience", "My Mama Said", and "Soul Salsa Soul". CD

✨✧ Average White BandPerson To Person/Warmer Communications ... CD
Edsel (UK), 1977/1978. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Three albums' worth of material in one set – given that the first album here was originally a 2LP set! Person To Person is Average White Band's classic double live set from the mid 70s, and as tight a batch of grooves as you'll find on their studio albums! In fact, this one might even be tighter, as it's got a good set of classic tracks performed live, with a sound that's a little bit more uptight and open than the studio versions– and which is especially freewheeling on the instrumental solos. Many tracks go for a lot longer than on the original versions – and there's a version of "Pick Up The Pieces" that runs for 18 minutes, a version of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" that grooves for 8 minutes, a version of "School Boy Crush" that jams for 7 minutes, plus nice takes on the cuts "Cut The Cake", "Love Your Life", and "Cloudy". Warmer Communications is a classic AWB studio album from the late 70s. In case you don't get the joke, the title's a play on the fact that Atlantic Records had just been acquired by Warner Communications – now fully a major label at the end of the 70s! That fact doesn't stop the album from being a good one, though – and AWB work here with Arif Mardin on a set of tunes that still have a fair bit of the funky touches of earlier records, but which also go for a few mellower tunes too – of the sort that were becoming the group's strongest suit at the time. "She's A Dream" is a great example of this style – a nicely gliding number that still has a nice groove at the bottom – and while the set doesn't include any standout hits, it's still a great example of why AWB could pull off this sort of record a lot better than most of their contemporaries! Titles include "She's A Dream", "Warmer Communications", "Price Of The Dream", "Sweet & Sour", "One Look Over My Shoulder", "Your Love Is A Miracle", and "Same Feeling Different Song". CD

✨✧ St GermainBoulevard ... CD
F Communications (France), 1995. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Finally repressed! This is the classic first album by St Germain – aka Ludovic Navarre – issued here with the "complete series" of tracks from the original effort. Like St Germain's huge-selling Tourist effort for Blue Note, this one's a great batch of jazzy club grooves – basing its vibe on a classic 70s sound, but adding in some great modern French house touches to pump up the beat a bit more. Titles include "Deep In It", "Thank U Mum", "What's New?", "Easy To Remember", "Sentimental", "Street Scene", and "Forget It". Released in 1995, but still pretty darn fresh! CD
