✨✧ Quintessence5AM ... CD
Jupiter (Finland), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The soulful second set from Quintessence – even better than their debut, and the kind of record that's sure to take the world by storm! The Finnish combo seem to have refined their sound even more – working in a cool, laidback groove that's got lots of sweet jazzy bits in the instrumentation – but which also comes across with an unabashedly strong crossover groove! Vocalist Emma Salokoski sounds especially lovely – singing in English with a really universal appeal – hardly what you'd expect from the icy north of Finland, and much more what we'd expect to hear from the London scene. Titles include "Delirious", "You Don't Care", "Burn On With A Bitter Flame", "Speciality", "Broken", "Dig Deeper", and "Friday". CD

Texicalli/Jupiter (Finland), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great little groover from Quintessence – served up with all the jazzy brilliance of their great full length set! The track's got a skipping groove that slides back and forth nicely – setting up a catchy rhythm for the tune's sweet female lead vocals – sung in English with a really nice hook! CD

✨✧ Korpi EnsembleTrails ... CD
Jupiter (Finland), 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautifully airy work from the Korpi Ensemble – an up-and-coming Finnish ensemble, but one with the power to cross over big in the rest of the world! The music here carries echoes of some of the more recent Finnish underground – a mixture of folksy and jazzy instrumentation, all topped by some lovely female vocals in English – singing lyrics that are contemplative, but never overindulgent – all wrapped together with simple production that keeps the whole thing clean and lean! The work's a bit sweeter than some of the other titles on the Jupiter label, but in a good way – and tracks include "Witness", "Seasons", "Echoes", "Moment Of Love", "Impro", "Uncertain", "I Wish I Knew", and "Still Loving You". Baby Face WilletteStop & Listen ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1961. Used ... $14.99
One of only two albums that organist Baby Face Willette cut for Blue Note – and it's a killer! The record is a hard-wailing trio format – with Willette on organ, Grant Green on guitar, Ben Dixon on drums – and it's got a sound that's very similar to Green's excellent Grant's First Stand LP – a stripped-down sound that's a bit more rough around the edges than some of the other organ jazz dates you might normally hear on Blue Note! The groove is totally no-nonsense, and Willette's a firecracker on organ – running up and down the keys and pedals with amazing dexterity, and a sound that should have made him one of the biggest Hammond players of the 60s. Green's great too, and the drums of Dixon are more than loose enough to fit the vibe of the soloists beautifully. Titles include "Soul Walk", "Stop & Listen", "Jumpin Jupiter", and "Work Song". CD

Elektra/Fiction, 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Robert Smith and the group are still going strong here – changing up some of the rhythms a bit for the 90s generation, but still holding on to all of their best charms – and really hitting that tuneful crossover mode that made them so huge the decade before! Tracks include "Trap", "Treasure", "Bare", "Jupiter Crash", "Mint Car", "Strange Attraction", "The 13th", "This Is A Lie", and "Club America". CD

✨✧ Freestyle FellowshipInnercity Griots ... CD
4th & Broadway, 1993. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic classic from the Cali scene of the early 90s – one of the key records that had the west coast going head to head with some of the smarter acts back east – a great balance to the up and coming genius of Wu Tang and Brand Nubian! There's a similar sense of message and play going on here – rhymes from Mikah 9, PEACE, Aceyalone, and Self Jupiter – set to beats that bounce nicely, but never in a way that undercuts the lyrics – nicely crisp production with assist from the Earthquake Brothers. Titles include "Inner City Boundaries", "Shammy's", "Everything's Everything", "Park Bench People", "Mary", "Cornbread", "Way Cool", "Heavyweights", "Pure Thought", "Hot Potato", and "Six Tray". CD

✨✧ VariousTheo Parrish – Black Jazz Signature – Black Jazz Records 1971 to 1975 ... CD
Black Jazz/Snow Dog (Japan), Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Theo Parrish takes on the music of Black Jazz Records – yet somehow manages to make the whole thing come across with a cosmic groove that's all his own! By that, we don't mean that Theo's messing with the cuts – just that his mix here really highlights the more expansively electric and rhythmically angular elements of the label's classic catalog – sounds that are clearly an inspiration for a huge number of 21st Century musicians and producer – not just Parrish himself! There's a richly spiritual vibe to the whole set – and the collection is easily one of the best presentations of the Black Jazz label we've ever heard – stunning from start to finish. Cuts include "My Favorite Things" by Gene Russell, "Those Who Chant" by Walter Bishop, "Jupiter" and "Convulsions" by The Awakening, "Trance Dance" by Doug Carn, "Time & Space" by Rudolph Johnson, "Criss Cross" and "BE" by Calvin Keys, and "Blue Bossa" by Walter Bishop Jr. CD

✨✧ AwakeningHear, Sense & Feel ... CD
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent funky fusion group from Chicago – and one of the best ensembles to record for the Black Jazz label! The group's made up of hip Chicago underground players – and includes Ken Chaney on electric piano, Ari Brown on saxes, and Frank Gordon on trumpet – a lineup that comes together with the same sort of righteous energy and soulful power as Windy City contemporaries like The Pharoahs or Earth Wind & Fire! On this first LP, they jam with a mix of righteous funk and spiritual soul jazz, mixing electric piano, choppy reeds, and tight horns with a powerful rhythm backing that never goes too over the top, and which stays in a good modal mode that works great for the soloists – soaringly expressive at a personal level, yet coming together with a really righteous group feel in the end. Tracks include "Jupiter", "Brand New Feeling", "Convulsions", and "Kera's Dance". CD

✨✧ John ColtraneInterstellar Space (remastered – with bonus track) ... CD
Impulse, 1967/1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest recordings ever made by John Coltrane in his later years – a record that has him stepping off into really new territory that would have really been something, had he stayed on the planet long enough to make more recordings like this! The vibe is very experimental – almost predating loft jazz work to come in the 70s – as Coltrane works here just alongside the drums of Rashied Ali – a fantastic match for his mighty talents, as the pair work together with a whole new extrapolation of the spiritual territory that had been unlocked on more famous records of the time. The material didn't come out until years after Coltrane's death – at a time when others were already recording this way – but the set maybe blows away some of the best material of this nature from the 70s. Titles include "Mars", "Venus", "Jupiter", and "Saturn". CD

✨✧ Sun RaTo Those Of Earth & Other Worlds – Presented By Gilles Peterson ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful collection of rare tracks from Sun Ra – put together by the mighty Gilles Peterson, who we've trusted for years to give us some of the most soulful, cosmic music on this planet! Gilles has a wonderful ear for a certain strand of sounds from Ra and the Arkestra – their more spacey, more spiritual moments – which are strung together in this wicked double-length collection – which also includes a few tracks never issued before! The inside is as beautiful as the cover, and the whole thing's got copious notes on the music – including some track-by-track details that never showed up on some of the original records. 2CD set features 34 tracks in all – with titles that include "When There Is No Sun", "Spontaneous Simplicity", "Love In Outer Space (voc)", "On Jupiter, "We Travel the Spaceways", "Sleeping Beauty", "Mystery Mr Ra", "Blackman", "The All Of Everything", "The World Of Africa", "They Plan To Leave", "Children Of The Sun", "Dreaming", "Black Sky & Blue Moon", "Enlightenment", and "India". ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireOriginal Album Classics (That's The Way Of The World/Gratitude/Spirit/All N All/I Am/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
Columbia, 1970s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Five classic albums from Earth Wind & Fire – all packaged together in cool LP-styled sleeves – with some great bonus tracks too! First up is That's The Way Of The World – Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – and titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". Gratitude is one of Earth Wind & Fire's greatest from the mid 70s – a very tight batch of grooves that proves that Maurice White & Co. could play just as well on stage as they could in the studio – and the noise of the crowd going wild is enough to confirm that! Titles include their classic version of Skip Scarborough's "Can't Hide Love", plus the mellow jams "Yearnin' Learnin'" and "Reasons", the funky "Shining Star", and a great cover of "Sun Goddess", which was also done by Ramsey Lewis with the group. Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their energy towards a wider audience that showed their influence for years! Titles include the instrumentals "Biyo" and "Departure", plus the vocal tracks "Earth Wind & Fire","Burnin Bush", "Spirit", "Imagination", and "Getaway", all produced to perfection by Maurice White and Charles Stepney! All N All is a stellar blend of jazz, funk, and soul, all done in that perfect style they'd hit by the mid 70s. And even though this one was a monster album, of the type that you see in everyone's record collection from the time, it's still got a freshness that we always forget about – and lots of nice twists and turns that show that the band hadn't lost their more sophisticated roots. Case in point is the wonderful "Brazilian Rhyme", a short little groover that you'll instantly recognize as a sample from the first Tribe Called Quest album. Other tracks include "Jupiter", "In The Marketplace", "Magic Mind", "Runnin", "Be Ever Wonderful", and "Serpentine Fire". I Am is a megahit album from Earth Wind & Fire – a record that spawned 2 of their biggest numbers ever – the mellow classic "After The Love Has Gone", and the club classic "Boogie Wonderland"! The rest of the album is equally great to follow in the strength of those two numbers – and like always for EWF, even when the group's hitting the charts big, they're still righteous as can be – with lots of great undercurrents that reflect their earlier years in jazzier styles! Other titles include "Star", "Wait", "You & I", "In The Stone", and "Can't Let Go". Plus, this set also features bonus tracks on the Gratitude, Spirit, and I Am albums too! CD

✨✧ Quin KirchnerShadows & The Light ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2020. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A double-length set that showcases the ever-growing, ever-evolving talents of drummer Quin Kirchner – working here in a variety of settings with help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! Most of these tunes have a core sense of structure – and even when Quin is improvising more freely, he still finds a way to swing – working here on conventional drums, other percussion instruments, and even a bit of kalimba too – alongside a mix of players that includes Nick Broste on trombone, Nate Lepine on tenor and flute, Nick Mazzarella on alto, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Greg Ward on alto, Rob Clearfield on piano, and Matt Ulery on bass. Many numbers have a spacious, ambitious vibe – almost spiritual jazz, of a quality that really has us respecting Kirchner more than ever – and the double space of the album is really needed to allow this majestic message the room to unfold properly. Titles include "Ecliptics", "King Korn", "Jupiter Moon", "Horizons", "At This Point In Time", "Bata Chop", "Pathways", "Star Cluster", and "Moon Vision". CD

✨✧ VariousCity To City – A Retrospective Journey Through Detroit, Chicago & New York Underground House ... CD
BBE (UK), 1980s/1990s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An extremely well-done collection of underground house from the Chicago, Detroit, and New York scenes of the past 20 years – not a "greatest hits" at all, but an even-better assortment of hard to find gems and oft-overlooked singles! DJ Deep put the whole thing together, and he's really given the matter some careful consideration – a fact that's apparent when you read his notes on each tune in the set. Disc 1 features a mixed assortment of Chicago and Detroit work from years back, and disc 2 is an unmixed collection that brings the groove into later years. There's a heck of a lot here that you'll have a hard time finding anywhere else – and the 2CD package features 25 tracks in all, with titles that include "The Groove" by Da Posse, "Kaos (Juice Bar mix)" by Rhythm Is Rhythm, "Expanded" by Jeff Mills, "Acid Tracks" by DJ Pierre, "Phylyps Track Vol 1" by Basic Channel, "Elements" by Psyche, "Jupiter Jazz" by World 2 World, "Don't Lead Me (Nexus 21 mix)" by Terry Baldwin featuring Paris Grey, "I Feel It" by Kerri Chandler, "House Flashback" by Ron Hardy, "I Like To Move" by LB Bad, "String Ensemble" by Byron Burke, "12 Inches Of Pleasure" by Ron Trent & Braxton Holmes, "Dream State" by Cajmere with Derrick Carter, "Fallin In Love" by Burrell, "Keep Movin" by Mike Perras, "You're Someone Special" by Mr Fingers, and "How I Feel" by Lil Louis. ✨✧ Anthony OrtegaAfternoon In Paris – Anthony Ortega Solos & Duos ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 2002/2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful illustration of the deep talents of Anthony Ortega – a player who still sounds as creative and inventive this late in his career as he did way back in the 50s and 60s! The bulk of the CD features Ortega in two settings – one, a batch of studio duets with bassist Kash Killion; the other a series of live solo performances, recorded in Paris by a video camera! The Killion duets have a wonderfully warm, round sound – acoustic bass set up next to Ortega's alto and flute, with a carefully structured approach that's extremely thoughtful, and almost poetic. The live solos have a much rougher sound – partly from the starkness of the video recording, but also because they represent Oretga taking it much more off the cuff – just spinning things out on alto sax with a sound that's a fair bit like the old days. And to cap things off – speaking of the old days – the CD closes with one more duet from the 60s – a track that has Ortega and bassist Chuck Domanico playing together from an older Revelation session, appearing here for the first time ever! That track is a long version of "Ornithology", and other titles include "Ask Me Now", "Jupiter", "Blue Monk", "I'll Remember April", "Now's The Time", and "Open Spaces". CD
