A solid killer from Johnny Bristol – one of his classic tracks of the 70s! "Hang On In There Baby" is half Marvin Gaye, half Barry White – with a soaring and righteous groove that's completely sublime. An excellent smooth soul groover from Johnny Bristol! The album has Johnny stepping into a more sophisticated groove than he used on his early 70s albums for MGM – mixing together styles that sound a lot like those used by artists like Leroy Hutson or Leon Ware at the time, a mix of well-produced backings with just the right touch of strings, keyboards, and tight rhythms. Johnny's voice has a bit rootsier quality than you might be used to for this sort of album – which makes for an even more unique sound, especially on the mellower cuts. An unlikely meeting of talents, but a great one – as Buddy Miles' rougher groove comes into contact with the sublime 70s production talents of Johnny Bristol – who makes the whole album groove beautifully! The album was recorded in Muscle Shoals, but it's got a smooth modern sort of finish – all compressed and slightly funky, in a manner that's partially inspired by Philly, partially by Marvin Gaye's mid 70s hits. The whole thing's extremely great – with lots of hip modern numbers that bear no resemblance whatsoever to Lloyd's early work, and which will have you going "Hey, who's that? He's really great!" A pair of early Boz Scaggs albums – back to back on a single set! My Time is Boz Scaggs at the height of his early powers – still very much in the best blue-eyed soul style that first got him noticed by CBS, but also working with a stronger, richer, prouder sound that's really great! A number of the tracks on the set were recorded in Muscle Shoals, with superb small combo soul backing that Boz seems to respond to tremendously well – hitting a mode that's somewhere between Al Green and Van Morrison, with vocals that are simply mindblowing, and extraordinarily soulful. The rest of the set was recorded in San Francisco, and has a similarly freewheeling sound to Boz debut for CBS – with some great backing vocals by Linda Tillery and Dorothy Morrison as well. A near-lost indie soul effort from Marlena Shaw – recorded for the tiny South Bay label in the years after leaving bigger fame at Columbia, but still working here with producer Johnny Bristol, who makes for a surprisingly professional sound. Marlena's still trying to crack the clubs with some uptempo numbers, but to our ears the mellower cuts are the best – as they get back towards the roots that first made us love her music. A mix of southern soul and smooth 70s pop soul from Al Wilson – one of a few great LPs from Al in the early-to-mid 70s! Most of the tracks are arranged by HB Barnum, save for a few that were arranged by Jerry Long and produced by Steve Cropper. Johnny Bristol handled the title cut "La La Peace Song", which is a killer little groover that has that sweet smooth feel that you'd hear in some of Johnny's own work from the time. Nice, nice stuff! An easy album to overlook, but not without some nice moments! A classic set of smooth 70s soul from an under-recognized genius! Phillip Mitchell is a bit like his Atlantic Records contemporary Sam Dees – in that he wrote a lot of material for other singers, recorded a handful of singles, and worked mostly in the southern scene – but he also had a sophisticated, modern style that sounded a lot more like work coming out of New York, Philly, or Chicago. This lost album for Atlantic is a great example of that fact – as it was recorded at Muscle Shoals, but also features some Philly elements too – creating a great mix of modes that's wonderfully unique! There's a feel here that's just like some of the best work from Leroy Hutson, Johnny Bristol, or Leon Ware at the same time – a majestic, mature approach to soul that's simply tremendous.
