John Lee HookerIf You Miss 'Im – I Got 'Im ... LP
Bluesway, 1969. Very Good+ ... $34.99
John Lee Hooker gets some great treatment here – working in a loose, groovy style for the Bluesway label – and getting a nice dose of funk right down at the core! The set's produced by Ed Michel – who'd also done some great soul jazz work over the years – and in addition to great vocals and guitar from Hooker, the set also features extra guitar from the great Earl Hooker, piano and organ from Johnny Walker, and harmonica from Jeffrey Carp. Gino Skaggs plays electric bass, which gives the whole thing a nice kick – and titles include "Have Mercy On My Souil", "Lonesome Mood", "Bang Bang Bang Bang", "The Hookers", "Baby, Be Strong", and "I Wanna Be Your Puppy Baby". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Includes the ABC inner sleeve. Cover has surface wear, a promo sticker, and a number in pen.)

✨✧ John Lee HookerThat's Where It's At! ... LP
Stax, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic pairing of soulful talents – the legendary John Lee Hooker on the mighty Stax Records – in a set that's a real standout in the career of both! The vibe here is different than the usual sound of Stax – not a Memphis-ized John Lee Hooker, but instead the kind of stripped-down session that the singer had done for other labels in his early years – given a very faithful presentation here by producer Henry Stone (who himself might well be the third important force at work on the set!) Tracks are mostly short – apart from one eight minute jam – and Hooker's got that raw, raspy bite that still makes him one of the all-time greats. Titles include "Teachin' The Blues", "Goin To Louisiana","I Need You", "My Love Comes Down For You", "Please Don't Go", "I Just Don't Know", "Slow & Easy", "Two White Horses", "Feel So Bad", and "Grinder Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Cover has light surface wear.)

✨✧ Canned Heat & John Lee HookerHooker 'N Heat ... LP
Liberty, 1970. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
If you ever doubted the blues chops of Canned Heat, take a listen to this album – as the group are joined by the great John Lee Hooker, who they let stand strongly in the spotlight and almost make the album his own! Previous sets by Canned Heat were already pretty darn great – a huge cut above blues-inspired rock groups of the late 60s years – but with Hooker in the lineup here, the sound gets even more raw and sensitive – so much so that a number of these cuts almost feel like some of the early Detroit 78rpm recordings the older blues musician recorded at the start of his career – hardly the watered-down blues rock you might expect. Titles include "Burning Hell", "Send Me Your Pillow", "Messin With The Hook", "Boogie Chillen No 2", "Peavine", "Just You & Me", "Whiskey & Wimmen", and "I Got My Eyes On You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light light ring & edge wear, small bottom seam split.)

✨✧ John Lee HookerCountry Blues Of John Lee Hooker ... LP
Prestige, 1959. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The legendary John Lee Hooker, heard here in one of his more obscure recordings from the late 50s – at least in contrast to his famous sides for Vee Jay Records! This set's an unusual date – recorded in Detroit, despite the claim of the title – and featuring Hooker on acoustic guitar and vocals, without any other instrumentation at all – pitched much more towards the growing folk blues scene than some of his more familiar Chicago recordings. Tracks are short, but pack plenty of punch – and titles include "Black Snake", "I Rowed A Little Boat", "Bundle Up & Go", "Behind The Plow", "Water Boy", "Tupelo Blues", and "Pea Vine Special". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original blue label pressing, with silver text, microphone logo, and deep groove! Vinyl has a short click on side two, but is very clean overall. Cover has some light wear, but is nice too – a really nice original!)

✨✧ John Lee HookerHouse Of The Blues ... LP
Chess, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A rootsy cover, and some rootsy blues to match – a fairly stripped down session from John Lee Hooker –- and one that mostly just features vocals and guitar, plus some occasional added guitar and piano! Most of the recordings here are from the early 50s, pulled together in a full LP at the end of that decade – and they represent the formative roots of the Chess Records sound – a key bridge between Chicago blues and work from earlier scenes. Titles include "Ramblin By Myself", "Ground Hog Blues", "Women & Money", "High Priced Woman", "Sugar Mama", "Walkin The Boogie", "Love Blues", and "Union Station Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s Original Chess Masters pressing. Cover has light wear, lightly bent corners, and is bent a bit at the bottom right edge.)

✨✧ John Lee HookerLive At Soledad Prison ... LP
ABC, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the roughest, rawest John Lee Hooker albums from the ABC years – a live recording done at Soledad Prison in California! The set features vocals both by Hooker and his son – and instrumentation includes Luther Tucker and Charlie Grimes playing additional guitar next to John, plus Fender bass from Lex Silver, and drums from Ken Swank. The crowd is clearly into the recording quite a bit – going nicely wild at all the right points – and titles include "Superlover", "I'm Your Crosscut Saw", "What's The Matter Baby", "Boogie Everywhere I Go", and "Bang Bang Bang Bang". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing. Cover has light wear and aging, but looks great overall.)

✨✧ John Lee HookerBorn In Mississippi – Raised Up In Tennessee ... LP
ABC, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Born in Mississippi, raised in Tennessee, but recorded in California with some mighty great grooves! The album's a great mix of the rootsy blues of John Lee Hooker and some of the best production modes ABC Records was using at the time – no hoke or attempt to dampen the energy of the core music – but just the key addition of fresh elements from players who include Clifford Coulter on piano, Sugarcane Harris on violin, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, Mel Brown on bass, George Bohannon on trombone, and John Klemmer on electrified sax with effects! These players all have a great ear for messing up jazz, blues, soul, and funk – and help Hooker to make the set one of his hippest ever – a record that nods strongly at the new generation, yet never panders to it at all. Titles include "Younger Stud", "King Of The World", "Tell Me You Love Me", and "Going Down". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John Lee HookerIt Serve You Right To Suffer ... LP
Impulse, 1965. Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
There's no suffering here – as the record's a real delight, and one of the more unique sessions in the career of the great John Lee Hooker! The record was done for Impulse Records, mostly known for its jazz recordings at the time – and the session has the vocals and guitar of John Lee next to a trio of more jazz-based players, one that features Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Panama Francis on drums – who somehow do a fantastic job of backing Hooker up! The set has a beautiful recording quality – very crisp and clear, yet never polished – and the work of the other players is incredible, as they really move into John Lee's mode, and somehow have him shining even more strongly than on some of his other albums from the time. This isn't a folk blues set done by a jazz label – and instead, the best of Impulse is used to give Hooker a fantastic showcase – on titles that include "Bottle Up & Go", "Sugar Mama", "Decoration Day", "You're Wrong", and a good cover of "Money". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John Lee HookerKabuki Wuki – Recorded Live At the Kabuki Theatre, San Francisco ... LP
Bluesway, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Mighty great live work from John Lee Hooker – recorded during an all-night concert in early 70s San Francisco – but with a freewheeling groove that feels like a small club in Chicago during the early years of electric blues! Hooker's guitar and vocals are tremendous – often served up in that heavy pulse of his best vintage recordings – and Robert Hooker adds in some sweet Hammond licks on a few numbers, to give things slightly jazzy undercurrent as well. Tracks include "Hold It", "Look At The Rain", "My Best Friend", "Your Love", and "If You Got A Dollar". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John Lee Hooker & Coast To Coast Blues BandAnywhere Anyplace Anytime ... LP
United Artists, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Early recordings by John Lee Hooker and his Coast To Coast Blues Band – recorded in Detroit in the late 40s through the early 50s. The Coast To Coast Blues Band may be a little misleading in the title, as the recordings find Hooker with only the sparest accompaniment on bass, drums, and guitar if any accompaniment at all – but it's the good kind of misleading, because you don't want anything getting in the way of the foot stomping, soulful blues vibe of John Lee Hooker on these early cuts! Anytime-Anytime-Anywhere is filled with that spare, intimate John Lee Hooker blues sound that came to represent so much of the the inner city gin joints of the era – on titles that include "Come Back Baby", "Forgive Me", "Street Is Filled With Women", "Moon Is Rising", "Turnin' Gray Blues", "Lord Taketh My Baby Away", "Throw This Old Dog A Bone", and "Welfare Blues".
