A lost classic from reedman Joe Harriott – and a landmark blending of jazz and world music! The core of the group is that quintet of West Indian alto player Joe Harriott – one of the leading lights of the British jazz scene of the 60s, and a dedicated modernist who was as important to England as Ornette Coleman was to America. Harriott's group is expanded by the addition of John Mayer's quintet of Indian musicians, who play in tandem with Harriott's group in a swirling blend of styles and sounds. The sound is spacey and trippy, with more elements of Indian music, than of jazz, but Harriott still manages to get some nice playing in. The whole album is one long suite of tracks, and titles include "Contrasts", "Raga Megha", and "Raga Gaud-Saranga". LP, Vinyl record album

A pair of legendary albums from the mighty Joe Harriott – a player who emigrated to England in the 50s, then set the scene on fire in the following decade! First up is Free Form – the landmark album that forever put saxophonist Joe Harriott on the map, and it's a brilliant batch of tracks that prove that Harriott was advancing the jazz avant garde in England as much as players like Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor were advancing it in America. Despite the "free form" of the title, the tracks are more "new thing" – somewhat structured, with a rhythmic approach that's still a little straight, but solos that go nice and outside. Joe's overall conception is a beautiful mix of angular thinking with freely expressed soulful emotion – and the record's one that ranks up there with the 10 most groundbreaking of the 60s! The group's about as fantastic as you could ever expect from England at the time – with Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seamen on drums – and titles include "Formation", "Coda", "Abstract", "Straight Lines", and "Impression". Next is Abstract – one of the legendary sets of avant garde jazz by the British alto genius Joe Harriott – an artist who was sometimes billed as the British Ornette Coleman – a reputation he definitely earns with the groundbreaking quality of this album! The conception is bold right from the start – strongly rhythmic, but at a level that's different from Coleman's music – with some deeply emotional undertones to the solos (which also include work from Shake Keane on trumpet!) – and occasional modal elements that also bring in some spiritual elements to work perfect with the breakout solos. Unreleased work from alto genius Joe Harriott – two different slices of material from a very under-recorded point in his career! The first five tracks feature Joe in that back to basics mode he was hitting at the time – working in a unique group that features Kenny Wheeler on trumpet and flugelhorn, Pat Smythe on piano, Ron Mathewson on bass, and Bill Eyden on drums – all players who are very open to modern ideas, but who also keep things on more of a groove here – with only a bit of the freedom that Harriott was bringing to his music a few years before! And yet there's still a great tension that makes the set great – swinging jazz mixed with modernism – on titles that include the Horace Silver tunes "Down & Out" and "Psychedelic Sally", plus "WSIMC", "Chronology", and "Shadows". The remaining two tracks on the set feature Joe in a very different setting – the large group of Harry South – the kind of mod jazz in 60s London, working here with a superb lineup that also features Kenny Wheeler and Ian Hamer on trumpets, Ray Warleigh on alto and flute, and Tubby Hayes and Alan Skidmore on tenor saxes! A killer collection of work from Jamaican producer Derrick Harriott – a double length set that features 20 tracks on CD for the first time ever, plus lots of rare nuggets – all from a time when Harriott was completely on fire! Harriott was not only a producer, but also a performer, and club and record store owner – which gave him great access to up and coming talents, and a keen ear for all the changes that were taking place on the scene – changes that here sometimes come across with some of the more righteous currents that were showing up in 70s soul, and other times the growing sense of spirituality in Jamaican music. Way more than the trad jazz and bebop you might guess from the title – as the set's an incredible compilation of unreleased British jazz treasures – mostly from the 60s, and showing the London scene in the grip of some very formative years! In the immediate postwar years, UK jazz was a pretty straight and tight thing – but as the 60s approached, the sound of London really opened up – not just because of a huge influx of key post-colonial players, but also because the locals were really gaining confidence, and trying out a wealth of new styles on their own – styles that explode wonderfully here, in a mix of 60s modern styles that's really incredible. All tracks here are pulled from the archives of the artists, and many capture key players at periods we haven't heard this strongly before – with work by a quintet with Mike Taylor on piano and Dave Tomlin on tenor; a quintet with Henry Lowther on trumpet, Lyn Dobson on tenor, Tony Hymas on piano, and Harry Miller on bass; a septet with John Stevens on drums, Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn, Alan Skidmore on tenor, and Ray Warleigh on alto; a quintet with Joe Harriott on alto and Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn; a quartet with Mike Osborne on alto and John Surman on baritone; Amancio D'Silva on guitar with the quintet of Don Rendell and Ian Carr; a quartet with Lol Coxhill on soprano sax and Steve Miller on piano, and work by groups that include Elton Dean's Just Us, Gary Windo's Symbiosis, and Graham Collier Music. The most mindblowing work we've ever heard from guitarist Amancio D'Silva – a really freewheeling blend of jazz and Indian music, and a set that goes far beyond most of his other albums! The album definitely lives up to the dream sequence promised by the title – as it features one long track that spins out in a beautiful blend of tablas, sitar, flute, percussion, violin, and Amancio's own great electric guitar! The leader crafts these trippy solos that are a bit like the work of Gabor Szabo, but even more open-ended and exotic – and the group also features some great work on sax from Alan Branscombe, plus violin from John Mayer – who'd worked on previous experiments of this nature with Joe Harriott. Despite the length of the track, the record is never over-indulgent or repetitive at all – as D'Silva constantly shifts the mood and the sounds – creating this wonderful interplay that really makes for a scenic richness throughout – an evocative journey in music that holds us completely rapt all the way through. Wilton Bogey Gaynair was one of a number of West Indian jazz players who emigrated to England during the postwar years – and while he's not as famous as contemporaries like Joe Harriott or Shake Keane, this classic set from 1959 shows that he had a rich talent that deserved greater recognition! The set's a laidback blowing one – very much in the mode of some of Tubby Hayes' sides from the time – and it features Hayes' frequent pianist Terry Shannon, plus bass by Kenny Napper and drums by Bill Eyden. Gaynair's tenor has a slightly broken quality that's a bit odd at first, but which has kept us coming back to this record over the years because of his fresh earthy tone. Includes the original tunes "Wilton's Mood", "Blues For Tony", "Rhythm",and "Deborah". LP, Vinyl record album

Possibly the most fantastic recording ever from the greatest talent of Polish jazz! The material was recorded in 1965, in the years before Komeda followed Roman Polanski to the US to score his films like Rosemary's Baby – and it's one of the greatest modernist albums of the 60s jazz scene on either side of the Atlantic – a record we'd rank right up there with the best from Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Joe Harriott, or other forward-thinking talents of the generation! The style is incredibly modernist, but with none of the over-indulgences that later plagued the Polish prog-oriented scene, and with none of the non-jazz influences that could stop a session like this dead in the water – and instead, the band grooves mightily in a blend of sharp edges and modal rhythms – a tremendous blend that makes the album as appealing to fans of more soulful jazz as it does to those looking for bold modernist statements. The quintet features 2 of Poland's other key jazz figures from the time – Tomasz Stanko on trumpet and Zbigniew Namyslowski on alto sax – and other members include Gunter Lenz on bass and Rune Carlson on drums. Titles are all Komeda originals, all nice and long – and include "Astigmatic", "Kattorna", and "Svantetic". CD

The city of London was a key center of new jazz activity in the postwar years – partly due to the music's spreading popularity from American sources, but also due to the crumbling colonial structure of the British Empire – which saw residents of other nations arriving in the city, bringing their own musical styles to help create new traditions on the British scene! Incredible early work from one of Germany's greatest modernists – one of the key records that showed the world that German jazz was way more than just a rehashing of American modes in the postwar years! This rare 1963 recording features the quintet of trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – a groundbreaking unit that includes tenorist Heinz Sauer, altoist Gunter Kronberg, bassist Gunter Lenz, and drummer Ralf Hubner – a fantastic combo that comes together in a stark modernist groove that's right up there with the best work of Ornette Coleman or Joe Harriott from the time – very rhythmic, in ways that offset the freedom of the horn solos beautifully – letting the saxes and trombones soar, while the bass and drums lock into a tight groove. The no-piano, three-horn frontline is incredibly strong – bracing and powerful, but never in a way that's too cold or modern, thanks to an inherent sense of soul in allt he players. An incredible record from reedman Harold McNair – one of the key Jamaican jazz players who hit the London scene in the same post-colonial wave as Joe Harriott and Shake Keane – and maybe our favorite of the bunch! Harold's a hell of a talent on both tenor and flute – and although he might be best known for his background work on late 60s Donovan albums, he really soars here as a soloist – working with Ornette Coleman group members David Izenzon on bass and Charles Moffett on drums – both of whom swing wonderfully in McNair's company! The album bills Izenzon and Moffett strongly on the cover – as if they're one of the main attractions – but what's most compelling is the way that McNair and pianist Alan Branscombe bring the American musicians into their own sort of groove – a modal, soulful style that's completely sublime – and which makes the album a killer all the way through. Titles include the original "Affectionate Fink" – plus great takes on "I Love You", "O Barquinho", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", and "Here's That Rainy Day" – all soulful swingers. CD

A totally cool little record – and one that more than lives up to the Eastern promise of its cover! The album's a real stunner from Australian reedman Charlie Munro – a beautiful mix of jazz and exotic elements, at a level that puts it up there with a rare few records that work this well – like the Indo-Jazz experiments of Joe Harriott, the earlier recordings of Ahmed Abdul Malik, and maybe the legendary Jazz Meets World series on MPS! Munro's range of influences is nicely varied here – with some elements of Indian music, others borrowed from Japan, and even some from points that are a bit more Mid-East – mostly delivered on familiar jazz instrumentation, but with very dramatic results. Charlie plays tenor, alto, soprano sax, and bass clarinet – plus a bit of flute and cello too – and the rest of the group includes Mark Bowden on drums and vibes, Neville Whitehead on bass, and Bob McIvor on trombone – an instrument that's often used in these dark, bassy tones with the rhythms. Titles include "Islamic Suite", "Arch's Groove", "Malahari Raga", "David", "Japanese Love Song", "Minimum", "When I Look At You", and "Raised Eyebrows". LP, Vinyl record album

Two fantastic albums from the great British pianist Stan Tracey – both the kind of material that has made him one of our favorite players of that scene in the 60s! First up is With Love From Jazz – a beautifully bold statement from the Stan Tracey Quartet – one of the group's key recordings of the 60s, and a wonderful document of the talents of tenorist Bobby Wellins! During the 60s, Tracey and Wellins worked together like the team of Monk and Charlie Rouse – crafting a groove that was as soulful as it was angular – filled with feeling and life, and at once willing to explore the outer reaches of jazz, yet never going too far as to lose its humanity. Yet Wellins and Tracey were no simple Monkish pair – as heard on this set from 1967, a suite of tracks composed by Stan, and featuring him on celeste and vibes as well as his usual piano. The rhythms are increasingly complex as the set moves on – taking the angularities of Tracey's 50s work, and inflecting them with a sense of exploratory energy that really moves the style into a whole new level – one that's wonderfully dynamic, and filled with a freshness that still resonates strongly today. Titles include "Three Times Loser Three Times Bluser", "Undercover Lover", "Amoroso Only Moreso", "Two Part Intention", "Sweet Used To Be", and "Love Now Weep Later" – all of which sound much better than their hokey titles! We Love You Madly is Stan Tracey's tribute to the music of Duke Ellington – but a set that's done in a very different way than you might expect – as the music is filled with contributions from all these fantastic British modern soloists, who take things in directions that you really might not expect – as do some of the rhythms, which reflect more of Tracey's territory at times, and really keep things interesting! The set features key soloists on each track – in a lineup that includes Ian Carr on flugelhorn, Joe Harriott on alto, Tony Coe and Don Rendell on tenor, and Tracey himself on piano. Titles include the great original "We Love You Madly" – plus "Lay By", "Blues With A Feeling", "Creole Love Call", "Passion Flower", and "I'm Beginning To See The Light". CD

Bernie's got this open, soaring tone on his horn that's really wonderful – as sharp-edged as Ornette Coleman or Joe Harriott, but much more spiritual overall – set here to mostly modal rhythms, and served up with stunning trumpet work from Kim Paterson – another overlooked player from the time! Side one features a live recording from Sydney in 1966 – all original tracks, all long and very open – titled "Lazy Days", "Chuggin", and "Sky".
