Jo StaffordJo + Jazz ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Very Good- ... $14.99
They certainly got the title right on this one – as Jo's singing a great batch of jazz-based tracks – and getting help from an array of small group players that include Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Conte Candoli, and Ray Nance! Arrangements are by Johnny Mandel, in a warmly chromatic mode that really helps take Jo's vocals away from the pop end of the spectrum – and into a lush and almost torchy mode that's a real surprise. Mandel does an especially nice job of working the horns into the mix – allowing for some slight but well-placed solo and introduction bits that really help shape the overall sound of the album. Titles include "For You", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Midnight Sun", "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", "I Didn't Know About You", "Imagination", "Dream Of You", "Day Dream", and "I've Got The World On A String". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has some splitting in the top seam and a small name in marker on back.)

✨✧ VariousYou Need This – A Journey Into Deep Jazz Vol 3 (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An excellent collection of rare jazz grooves – the special kind of tracks that effortlessly mix up influences and styles, with a result that makes each and every number a real standout in the set! This is the third volume in the series, and the mix of music is wonderful – tunes from artists who are definitely jazz, and who have sophistication that goes way past familiar funky modes – into territory that's often far-reaching, and influenced by spiritual modes – even though all the tracks have a great little groove! There's plenty of fantastic modal moments in the collection, and although the core energy of the package comes from the 70s underground jazz scene, there's also some great bits from other periods too. Titles include "Nepal" by Bjorn Alkes Kvartette, "Probuzeni" by Jazz Celula "Dawn" by Sangram, "Manteca" by Phineas Newborn Jr, "Pan African Ballet Music" by Karlton Hester & The Contemporary Jazz Art Movement, "Hasta La Victra Siempra" by Copa Salvo, "Impressions" by Stafford James Ensemble, "Middle Passage" by Tyrone Jefferson, "Aladdin's Carpet" by Beaver Harris, and "24 Carat" by Gabor Szabo. Rashied Ali QuartetNew Directions In Modern Music ... LP
Survival, 1973. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Incredible work from drummer Rashied Ali – a set that really delivers on the promise of the music he first crafted with John Coltrane! The vision here is wide and expansive, yet still has a soulful, spiritual heart – a great balance of the free impulses of all players with the core unity of the group – a righteous energy that holds up strongly, even over the course of the album's two long tracks. The set's a great contrast to the work going on in the European scene at the time – and really shows how the American indie recording scene was able to capture performances in a more solid, focused sort of way. In addition to Ali's work on drums, the quartet also features excellent alto and flute from Carlos Ward, piano from Fred Simmons, and bass from Stafford James – the last of whom really ties the whole thing together with his sense of soul. Titles include "Akela" and "As Salaam Alikum". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label pressing with Bell Sound stamp.)

Oliver LakeHeavy Spirits ... LP
Arista/Freedom, 1975. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Great early work from Lake – playing here in a number of different settings, but always with well-matched collaborators! 3 tracks on the set – "Owshet", "Heavy Spirits", and "While Pushing Down Turn" – featuring Lake with Olu Dara on trumpet, Donald Smith on piano, Victor Lewis on drums, and Stafford James on bass, playing in sort of a freebop mode. Three more tracks – "Movement Equals Creation", "Intensity", and "Altoviolin" – feature Lake on alto, playing with a violin trio that sounds very dark and moody. "Rocket" is a trio piece, with Joseph Bowie and Charles Bobo Shaw – and "Lonely Blacks" is a somber solo sax piece. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch, ring & edge wear, a lightly bent corner, and sticker spot.)

Woody ShawLotus Flower ... LP
Enja (Germany), 1982. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Beautiful late work from Woody Shaw – perfectly honed, in the strident, stretching, soulful exploratory style of his best work in the 70s! The group's a quartet with Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, Tony Reedus on drums, and Steve Turre joining Woody in the frontline – and the excellent work of the rhythm section provides a lively forum for the soloists to stretch out wonderfully, without going too far, or getting overindulgent and trapped in designs of their own making. The set sparkles with 5 original tunes – Turre's "Lotus Flower", James' "Game", Miller's "Eastern Joy Dance", and "Song Of Songs" and "Rahsan's Run", both by Shaw. LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed! Cover has a small cutout mark.)
Also available Lotus Flower ... CD 14.99
