Tadd DameronClassics Of Modern Jazz Vol 3 – The Tadd Dameron Band ... LP
Jazzland, Late 40s/1962. Very Good+ ... $11.99 13.99
One of the few albums to feature the work of the legendary Tadd Dameron from his formative early years in bop – a time when Dameron's modernist modes were really helping to shape the sound of the scene! The groups are all pretty darn smoking, and the record features some classic work by Fats Navarro on trumpet, Allan Eager on tenor, Milt Jackson on vibes, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Tracks are longer than the usual 3-minute bop side, and titles include "Wahoo", "Good Bait", "Tiny's Blues", and "Symphonette". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono maroon label Orpheum pressing. Cover has a small bit of seam splitting, but is very nice overall.)

Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk With John Coltrane ... LP
Jazzland, 1957/Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $34.99
A record that documents a meeting of two giants of modern jazz in the 50s – the angular genius Thelonious Monk, and the younger John Coltrane – a tenor player who was probably better-known for his work with Miles Davis during this period! The recordings are more Monk's than Coltrane's – Monk was signed to Riverside at the time – and the set mixes in three quartet tracks that have the pair working with Wilbur Ware on bass and Shadow Wilson on drums – plus two more from the sessions for the famous Monk's Music record – alternate takes from those sessions, with a larger group that features Gigi Gryce on alto, Coleman Hawkins on additional tenor, and Ray Copeland on trumpet! Quartet tracks include "Ruby My Dear", "Trinkle Trinkle", and "Nutty" – with the larger group on alternates of "Off Minor" and "Epistrophy" – and a solo performance by Monk on an alternate of "Functional". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 70s mono Japanese pressing – SMJ-6149(M) – with obi and insert. Obi has a bent corner at the seam in back.)

✨✧ George Shearing & The Montgomery BrothersGeorge Shearing & The Montgomery Brothers ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Some of jazz's most sensitive artists get together in a lyrical set of light-handed ditties. Shearing's piano is a surprisingly nice complement to the vibes/bass/guitar sound of The Montgomery Brothers – and the group is augmented by some nice Latin percussion. Tracks are short, and titles include "Double Deal", "Mambo In Chimes", "Lois Ann", "And Then I Wrote", and "No Hard Feelings". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Bill Grauer Productions pressing, with boxed logo and deep groove. Cover has light surface wear and aging.)

✨✧ Frank StrozierLong Night ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album, and one of Strozier's best! The record is an excellent example of the maturity and modernism that was coming out of the Chicago jazz scene as it hit the early 60s – and it features Strozier's soulful alto in the company of some of the city's best players, like pianist Chris Anderson, drummer Walter Perkins, bassist Bill Lee, and baritonist Pat Patrick, playing here away from Sun Ra's group! The title track alone is an incredibly fantastic composition, full of moodiness and incredible reed work – but the rest of the record's great, too, and features excellent originals like "The Need For Love", "The Crystal Ball", and "Pacemaker". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label Jazzland pressing, with deep groove – very clean! Cover has light wear, and some light tape in the corners.)

✨✧ Joe AlexanderBlue Jubilee ... LP
Jazzland, 1960. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A soul jazz masterpiece – and one of the rarest albums on the Jazzland label! Tenorist Joe Alexander has a mean, raw tone on the set – clearly influenced by the early 60s soul jazz generation, but also with some nicely off-beat tones that give him a really unique feel. He's backed here by the kind of a group that couldn't go wrong – Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – as well as the equally-obscure John Hunt on flugelhorn. Tracks are all long and jamming – much more soulful than some of the other Jazzland sides from the time – with titles that include "I'll Close My Eyes", "Brown's Town", "Terri's Blues", and "Weird Beard". ✨✧ Eddie Lockjaw Davis & Johnny GriffinGriff & Lock ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Classic tenors head-to-head – as Griff & Lock lay out one of their excellent 2 tenor classics from the early 60s! The rhythm section's deeply soulful – with Junior Mance on piano, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – and the album grooves through some long blowers, a mellow number, and a few choppy modern ones. Titles include "Last Train From Overbrook", "Second Balcony Jump", "Midnight At Mintons", "Hey Lock", and "Good Bait". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Paul GonsalvesGettin' Together ... LP
Jazzland, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great small combo set from tenorist Paul Gonsalves – one of his best albums away from Duke Ellington, and a record that really opens up with his tremendous tone on the tenor! The group's a great small combo, with more of a soul jazz groove than usual for Paul – Nat Adderley on cornet, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – all players who really help Gonsalves find the right sort of vibe! The set includes two of Babs Gonzales' great compositions – "Low Gravy" and "Gettin Together" – and other titles include "Walkin", "Hard Groove", "J&B Blues", and "Yesterdays". ✨✧ Clifford JordanStarting Time ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great early Clifford Jordan record, and a tight bit of jazz from this great Chicago tenor player. Another Chicago favorite, Wilbur Ware, is on bass, and a young Cedar Walton's playing piano, and with warmth like that, Jordan and trumpeter Kenny Dorham sound great next to each other. Loads of original hard bop lines by Jordan, including "Extempore" and "Quittin' Time", plus "Mosaic" and "One Flight Down" by Cedar Walton. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny LytleBlue Vibes ... LP
Jazzland, 1960. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Excellent grooves that mix together vibes and organ! This is one of the early albums cut by soul jazz vibist Johnny Lytle – and although it's more stripped-down than later work, it's still got a nice groove, and a feel that's quite different from work by other jazz vibes players at the time. By this point, Johnny's already hooked up with organist Milt Harris – who had a sweet, compressed sound on the organ that worked great with Johnny's rhythmic playing on vibes. The set includes a few standards done in the Lytle way, like "Canadian Sunset" and "Autumn Leaves", plus some good originals, like "Blue Vibes", "Movin Nicely", and "Mister Strudel". Very groovy, and one of his hardest to find! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wild Bill MooreWild Bill's Beat ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A lost session from early 60s tenor titan Wild Bill Moore – an R&B inflected player who only cut a few sides on his own, all of them a unique mix of jazz with some of the more screaming R&B saxophone tendencies! This set features Bill rocking with a Latinized rhythm section – Ben Riley on drums, Joe Benjamin on bass, Junior Mance on piano and Ray Barretto on conga, kicking things up from the bottom. 7 tracks in all: "Heavy Soul", "A Good Un", "Tearin Out", "Wild Bill's Beat", "Things Are Getting Better", "Bubbles", and "Just You, Just Me". ✨✧ Oscar PettifordClassics Of Modern Jazz Vol 2 – Last Recordings By The Late Great Bassist ... LP
Jazzland, 1960. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from Oscar Pettiford – his last sessions, in case you couldn't tell by the title, recorded in Copenhagen in 1959 and 1960, with players that include Allan Botchinsky on trumpet, Jan Johansson on piano, Erik Nordstrom on tenor, and Luis Hjulmand on vibes. Despite the introduction of European ringers to the set, and despite the posthumous collection of sessions, the album's actually one of Pettiford's strongest, and certainly one of the best to show his ever-growing commitment as a modernist during the 50s. The album includes loads of original tunes – including "Blue Brothers", "Two Little Pearls", "Laverne Walk", "Why Not? That's What!", and "My Little Cello". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonny RedBreezing ... LP
Jazzland, 1960. Good ... Out Of Stock
A real winner from Sonny Red's initial burst upon the New York scene – and a great mix of soul jazz and hardbop, all augmented by Red's wonderful tone! The group's a sextet, in the tight Jazzland style – and players include Barry Harris, Blue Mitchell, and Yusef Lateef. Tracks are relatively short, but solos are precise – and a few of the cuts feature Red as the only main soloist. Titles include "Ditty", "The New Blues", "Brother B", and "Teef". ✨✧ Mundell Lowe QuintetLow-Down Guitar ... LP
Jazzland, 1957. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Mundell Lowe Leads a good quintet with Gene Quill on alto and Billy Taylor on piano. If you know Lowe's records from the time, you know that he can play guitar with a nice hard groove that gets a really resonant sound out of the strings. We're not saying that he's a Tiny Grimes or a George Freeman, but there's something a little bit more off-beat with his playing than you'd expect. Tracks include "Crazy Rhythm", "Blues Before Freud", and "You Turned The Tables On Me". Gene Quill is excellent, as always. LP, Vinyl record album

First volume of sessions originally recorded for radio on acetates, then transferred to tape in 1961 and released as 2 albums on the Jazzland label in the early 60s. The sides are noteworthy in that they offer some important early performances by Navarro – working with the Tadd Dameron band that included Allan Eager, Kenny Clarke, and altoist Rudy Williams. Dameron wrote and arranged most of the material, 7 titles on this first volume: "Anthropology", "Lady Be Good", "The Squirrel", "Our Delight", "Dameronia", "Tadd Walk", and "Good Bait". ✨✧ Sonny RollinsSonny's Time ... LP
Jazzland, Late 50s/1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Nice batch of tracks that had been recorded earlier in Rollins career (during the late 50s), but which were unearthed in 1962 in an effort to cash in on Rollins' return to jazz playing. Even though the motivation behind the album was a bit mercenary, though, it's a nice thing that it came out – as these tracks are very nice, and feature Rollins playing some excellent pre-retirement hardbop. Some of the cuts feature a quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, and others have Rollins in the Kenny Dorham Quintet (one of which even has some additional harp playing!) with Oscar Pettiford, Hank Jones, and Max Roach. Titles include "Mangoes", "Cutie", "Funky Hotel Blues", and "La Villa". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny GriffinLittle Giant ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Very Good ... $84.99 99.99
One of Johnny Griffin's hard blowing LPs as a leader for Jazzland – recorded with a crack lineup that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! This is the kind of work that the term "hard bop" was coined for – sharp-edged jazz at its best – informed strongly by earlier bop and modern modes, but also played with a deeper dose of soul overall. The six players come together perfectly throughout – working with a tightness that matches most Blue Note work of the time – and titles are a great set of tracks that includes 3 by Chicago pianist Norman Simmons, and 1 by the great Babs Gonzales. Tunes include "Olive Refractions", "The Message", "Lonely One", "Playmates", and "63rd Street Theme". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo small black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split top seam, split spine, half split bottom seam, spot of marker. The back cover has an ink stamp & spot of marker, some masking tape remnant, and light surface wear.)

70's 2LP set that reissues some of the classic tenor material from Griff and Lockjaw recorded for the Jazzland label in the early 60's. Riverside, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent 2LP set that features material pulled from a number of Griffin's early albums for the Jazzland/Riverside label – including The Little Giant, The Kerry Dancers, Way Out, and The Johnny Griffin Sextet. The material is played by a number of groups – with musicians that include Donald Byrd, Pepper Adams, Kenny Drew, Wibur Ware, Blue Mitchell, Julian Priester, Barry Harris, and Sam Jones – but it's united by Griffin's souful approach to bop, and by a youthful energy that made him one of the most striking tenor soloists of his generation, despite a young age. Titles include "Catharsis", "Hot Sausage", "The Message", "Playmates", "63rd Street Theme", "The Kerry Dancers", and "Little John". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ JJ JohnsonProof Positive ... LP
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Positive proof that JJ Johnson's one of the greatest trombone players ever – a sublime quartet session for Impulse Records, and one that features some of his most striking, stripped-down work of the 60s! The focus here is really on Johnson's amazing tone and timing – but the record also benefits greatly by a soulful rhythm trio that includes the mighty Harold Mabern on piano, Arthur Harper on bass, and Frank Gant on drums – all free-thinking cats who are never too stiff with their swing, and really match JJ's fluid sense of energy on the record. The whole thing's brilliant – filled with well-chosen tunes and some sublime performances by all players – and cuts include a 10 minute version of Miles Davis' "Neo", plus "Minor Blues", "Stella By Starlight", "Lullaby Of Jazzland", and "Blues Waltz". Riverside, 1961. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Lockjaw and Johnny Griffin cut a pile of excellent albums together during the early 60s, but this one's one of our favorites! The record's a bit tighter than most – with the twin-tenor lineup grooving together on some short hard vamping numbers that have a very in-the-pocket groove. The rhythm's by Lloyd Mayers on piano, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – and the whole thing grooves away like a house on fire. Titles include "Layin On Mellow", "Oh Gee", "Camp Meeting", and "Nice & Easy". LP, Vinyl record album
