Giovanni Guidi/James Brandon Lewis/Thomas Morgan/Joao LoboNew Day ... LP
ECM (Germany), 2024. New Copy ... $24.99 26.99
Pianist Giovanni Guidi sets a really wonderful scene here for the tenor of James Brandon Lewis – a record that lets the saxophonist show us yet again what a wonderfully diverse player he can be! The quartet features two familiar partners for the pianist – bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joao Lobo – both musicians who work in the understated style that really seems to fit Guidi's tone, with some especially great work from Morgan that resonates beautifully in the ECM production! Yet it's really the presence of the tenor that sets the record apart – and rather than try to dominate, or showcase himself as a guest in the group, James instead folds him self in tremendously – augmenting all the moodier elements in Guidi's piano – on titles that include "Only Sometimes", "Luigi", "My Funny Valentine", "Wonderland", "Means For A Rescue", and "Canto Del Ocells". James Brandon LewisFor Mahalia With Love ... LP
Tao Forms, 2023. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 31.99
Some of the most soulful sounds we've ever heard from tenorist James Brandon Lewis a reworking of themes from the music of Mahalia Jackson into jazz – all at a level that keeps all the spirit of the originals, while unlocking the songs as vehicles for freer improvisation! Given the mix of freedom and spirit here, there's almost a vibe that takes us back to the brilliance of Albert Ayler at the start – served up through the intertwining magic of Lewis' tenor, the cornet of Kirk Knuffke, cello of Chris Hoffman, bass of William Parker, and drums of Chad Taylor – all tremendous players, but resonating even more strongly in the presence of this project! James has been getting plenty of attention in recent years, but this could be the album that catapults him into the canon of contemporary jazz – thanks to amazing takes of "Elijah Rock", "Were You There", "Go Down Moses", "Precious Lord", "Deep River", "Wade In The Water", "Swing Low", and "Sparrow". James Brandon LewisJesup Wagon (with bonus download) ... LP
Tao Forms, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe the strongest creative statement to date from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an album of work inspired by the legacy of George Washington Carver – served up here with a sense of depth that's certain to open even more doors for Lewis in years to come! There's a majesty to the music that's apparent in the very first notes, and which keeps on coming as each song unfurls – that search for truth talked about in Carver's writings, quested here with a quintet that includes William Parker on bass, Chad Taylor on drums, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, and Chris Hoffman on cello! The energy of Parker and Taylor is sublime – and makes for a setting that's different than other recent records we've heard from Knuffke, who also seems to draw new currents of sonic inspiration from the gentle but powerful use of the cello. The tenor has a raw, sharp edge throughout – a personality that would be striking, even without the beautiful setting of Lewis' original material – and titles include "Lowlands Of Sorrow", "Jesup Wagon", "Experiment Station", "Fallen Flowers", "Seer", and "Arachis". ✨✧ Messthetics & James Brandon LewisMessthetics & James Brandon Lewis ... LP
Impulse, 2024. New Copy ... $24.99 28.99
Tenorist James Brandon Lewis is easily one of the most important voices on his instrument in recent years – and also one of the most versatile too, as is shown in this project with the guitar-driven group The Messthetics! Two of the group's members hail from legendary punk band Fugazi, but clearly come across here with a different vibe overall – still using guitar, bass, and drums in ways that echo rock roots – but with a more rhythmic approach, and one that acts as a surprisingly strong setting for Lewis' solos! This isn't some cheap "punk jazz", but instead a wonderfully well-crafted hybrid of modes – one that really notches things up for both Lewis and the group. Titles include "Railroad Tracks Home", "The Time Is The Place", "That Thang", "Emergence", "L'Orso", and "Boatly". LP, Vinyl record album

Resilient Vessels (James Brandon Lewis/Patrick Holmes/Ches Smith/Josh Wrner)Resilient Vessels Live At The Cell ... LP
RR Gems (Estonia), 2021. New Copy ... $26.99 39.99
A sublime quartet, coming together here for a really unique session – one that's got a very modal vibe mixed with some freer moments served up by a piano-less group with a very special sound! Bassist Josh Werner got the whole project together, and the set's got a rock-solid foundation in his beautiful basslines – spun out alongside the drums of Ches Smith, while James Brandon Lewis solos on tenor and Patrick Holmes on clarinet – both players using these long, soulful lines that perfectly fit the modal movement of the energy! Lewis is especially powerful – the album may be one of his most spiritual recordings ever – and titles include "If Not That", "Gotham Rundown", "Ill Scenario 2", "Embody", "Resilient Vessels", "Exit Realms", and "Green Paper Tea". Alan BraufmanInfinite Love Infinite Tears ... LP
Valley Of Search, 2024. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
A brilliant return to form for reedman Alan Braufman – a musician who gave one world one great record during the loft jazz years of the 70s, but has only reemerged in recent years as a leader – one with a sense of fire that hasn't dimmed at all over the years! Here, Braufman really revisits that older territory – playing free jazz, but maybe with a bit more structure – as if modal elements might inform the improvisation in the group, giving everything a strong pulse that may well make the set Braufman's greatest album so far! The leader blows alto and flute, in a lineup that features tremendous tenor from James Brandon Lewis, plus beautiful vibes from Patricia Brennan, bass from Ken Filiano, drums from Chad Taylor, and percussion from Michael Wimberly – who gives the bottom an early kick that's greatly appreciated. The whole thing is beautiful – and titles include "Brooklyn", "Liberation", "Infinite Love Infinite Tears", "Edge Of Time", and "Chasing A Melody". LP, Vinyl record album

Brent Cordero & Peter KerlinSublime Madness ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2023. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
A wonderfully weird combination of sounds – one that might almost be called psychedelic jazz at times, yet which also has a more freewheeling quality as well! Brent Cordero plays a very cool combo organ next to piano and synth on the record – in a core trio that features Ryan Sawyer on drums and Peter Kerlin on a variety of basses – which are then augmented by differing contributions from track to track, shaping the color palette of the record in a wonderful way! Players include Daniel Carter on alto and flute, James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Jessica Pavone on viola, Aaron Siegel on vibes, and Adam Amram on congas – each making great contributions to the record – on ttles that include "Movement To Protect The People", "Decolonize This Place", "White Supremacy In Black Face", "Pyrrhic", "Between The Carrot & The Stick", and "Affordable For Who". Dave DouglasGifts (red vinyl pressing – with download) (2024 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Greenleaf, 2024. New Copy ... On November 29, 2024
A musical gift from trumpeter Dave Douglas – working here in a quartet that features some fantastic work on tenor from James Brandon Lewis! Lewis is becoming a musician who's as fluid and adaptable as Douglas has been over his many years and many projects – and the pair explore some great sonic space in the company of guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang – both players who create the sort of unconventional setting that always makes Dave sound his best. Bhatia's got an especially great style – these colors that shift in shape and tone with slight edges, and a sense of pacing that's very unique – which, when coupled with the performances of Douglas and Lewis, makes for an album that might be one of the best Greenleaf releases in eyars. Titles include "Day Dream", "Blood Count", "Third Dream", "Small Bar", "Rain Check", and "Gifts". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Saturday, November 30. Ava Mendez & Devin Hoff RevelsEcholocation ... LP
Aum Fidelity, 2023. New Copy ... $14.99 24.99
A stunning set of punk jazz, and one that maybe hearkens back to key experiments of this nature from the 80s scene – particularly some of the more groundbreaking work on the New York downtown scene! Ava Mendoza plays electric guitar and Devi Hoff play electric bass – but the pair also work here with excellent tenor from James Brandon Lewis, whose presence really balances out the fuzzier electric energy in a great way – different lines, different sounds, and a balance that never has Lewis trying to match the guitars for ferocity, which is a real plus. The quartet also features great drums from Ches Smith – and titles include "The Stumble", "Interwhining", "Dyscalculia", "Babel 17", "New Ghosts", and "Ten Forward". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BrahjaWatermelancholia ... LP
Cortizona (Netherlands), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record as unique as its title – a set led by saxophonist Devin Brahja Waldman, but done with a soaring ensemble spirit that takes us back to 70s material by Eddie Gale or The Descendants Of Mike & Phoebe! Part of the record's charm is the presence of vocals from Janice Lowe – a singer who rises and falls with the pulsating rhythms of the record, which get a lot of inspiration from the basswork of Luke Stewart, who's got a very spiritual vibe here. The lineup also includes tenor from James Brandon Lewis, who's as powerful here as on any of his dates as a leader – and additional elements include flute, bass clarinet, piano, trumpet, and drums – working in well-crafted arrangements by Brahja, filled with spirit and soul. Titles include "Accessibility Of Soul", "Sorcery Of Terminology", "Querencia", and "Watermelancholia". LP, Vinyl record album
