James Brandon LewisFor Mahalia With Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tao Forms, 2023. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99 17.99
Some of the most soulful sounds we've ever heard from tenorist James Brandon Lewis a reworking of themes from the music of Mahalia Jackson into jazz – all at a level that keeps all the spirit of the originals, while unlocking the songs as vehicles for freer improvisation! Given the mix of freedom and spirit here, there's almost a vibe that takes us back to the brilliance of Albert Ayler at the start – served up through the intertwining magic of Lewis' tenor, the cornet of Kirk Knuffke, cello of Chris Hoffman, bass of William Parker, and drums of Chad Taylor – all tremendous players, but resonating even more strongly in the presence of this project! James has been getting plenty of attention in recent years, but this could be the album that catapults him into the canon of contemporary jazz – thanks to amazing takes of "Elijah Rock", "Were You There", "Go Down Moses", "Precious Lord", "Deep River", "Wade In The Water", "Swing Low", and "Sparrow". 2CD edition features the full bonus album These Are Soulful Days – recorded by James Brandon Lewis with the Lutoslowski Quartet. James Brandon LewisTransfiguration ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2024. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
Very much the sort of record that's made James Brandon Lewis such a key force on the tenor in recent years – an album that acts as a bridge between so many different modern modes, in part because of the strength of the group! Lewis is one of that rare breed who can improvise on the outside, yet still retain a soulful swing – almost a quality that hearkens back to 60s avant jazz giants – and we can say that same about the rest of the group here, a lineup that features Aruan Ortiz on piano, Brad Jones on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums – the last of whom is especially marvelous in this endeavor! It almost seems as if Lewis gets better and better with each new record – and that's certainly the case here – n titles that include "Black Apollo", "Triptych", "Elan Vital", "Empirical Perception", "Transfiguration", and "Swerve". Messthetics & James Brandon LewisMessthetics & James Brandon Lewis ... CD
Impulse, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Tenorist James Brandon Lewis is easily one of the most important voices on his instrument in recent years – and also one of the most versatile too, as is shown in this project with the guitar-driven group The Messthetics! Two of the group's members hail from legendary punk band Fugazi, but clearly come across here with a different vibe overall – still using guitar, bass, and drums in ways that echo rock roots – but with a more rhythmic approach, and one that acts as a surprisingly strong setting for Lewis' solos! This isn't some cheap "punk jazz", but instead a wonderfully well-crafted hybrid of modes – one that really notches things up for both Lewis and the group. Titles include "Railroad Tracks Home", "The Time Is The Place", "That Thang", "Emergence", "L'Orso", and "Boatly". CD

✨✧ Giovanni Guidi/James Brandon Lewis/Thomas Morgan/Joao LoboNew Day ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2024. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pianist Giovanni Guidi sets a really wonderful scene here for the tenor of James Brandon Lewis – a record that lets the saxophonist show us yet again what a wonderfully diverse player he can be! The quartet features two familiar partners for the pianist – bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joao Lobo – both musicians who work in the understated style that really seems to fit Guidi's tone, with some especially great work from Morgan that resonates beautifully in the ECM production! Yet it's really the presence of the tenor that sets the record apart – and rather than try to dominate, or showcase himself as a guest in the group, James instead folds him self in tremendously – augmenting all the moodier elements in Guidi's piano – on titles that include "Only Sometimes", "Luigi", "My Funny Valentine", "Wonderland", "Means For A Rescue", and "Canto Del Ocells". ✨✧ James Brandon LewisCode Of Being ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2021. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tenorist James Brandon Lewis has really been on fire in recent years – always opening up new doors in his music, and surprising us with each new record, which seems to have a slightly different flavor that further expands his palette of sound! Here, Lewis presents some beautiful original compositions with a group that has amazingly fluid drum work from the great Chad Taylor, lovely colors on piano from Aruan Ortiz, and these rollingly soulful basslines from Brad Jones – all players who are seamlessly tied to Lewis tenor, as the four paint these really wonderful pictures in sound. The approach is more structured than some of Lewis' other recordings, but at a level that's still filled with bursts of personal expression throughout – on titles that include "Every Atom Glows", "Archimedean", "Resonance", "Per 5", "Tessera", and "Code Of Being". ✨✧ James Brandon LewisJesup Wagon ... CD
Tao Forms, 2021. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the strongest creative statement to date from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an album of work inspired by the legacy of George Washington Carver – served up here with a sense of depth that's certain to open even more doors for Lewis in years to come! There's a majesty to the music that's apparent in the very first notes, and which keeps on coming as each song unfurls – that search for truth talked about in Carver's writings, quested here with a quintet that includes William Parker on bass, Chad Taylor on drums, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, and Chris Hoffman on cello! The energy of Parker and Taylor is sublime – and makes for a setting that's different than other recent records we've heard from Knuffke, who also seems to draw new currents of sonic inspiration from the gentle but powerful use of the cello. The tenor has a raw, sharp edge throughout – a personality that would be striking, even without the beautiful setting of Lewis' original material – and titles include "Lowlands Of Sorrow", "Jesup Wagon", "Experiment Station", "Fallen Flowers", "Seer", and "Arachis". CD

Alan BraufmanInfinite Love Infinite Tears ... CD
Valley Of Search, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A brilliant return to form for reedman Alan Braufman – a musician who gave one world one great record during the loft jazz years of the 70s, but has only reemerged in recent years as a leader – one with a sense of fire that hasn't dimmed at all over the years! Here, Braufman really revisits that older territory – playing free jazz, but maybe with a bit more structure – as if modal elements might inform the improvisation in the group, giving everything a strong pulse that may well make the set Braufman's greatest album so far! The leader blows alto and flute, in a lineup that features tremendous tenor from James Brandon Lewis, plus beautiful vibes from Patricia Brennan, bass from Ken Filiano, drums from Chad Taylor, and percussion from Michael Wimberly – who gives the bottom an early kick that's greatly appreciated. The whole thing is beautiful – and titles include "Brooklyn", "Liberation", "Infinite Love Infinite Tears", "Edge Of Time", and "Chasing A Melody". CD

Dave DouglasGifts ... CD
Greenleaf, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A musical gift from trumpeter Dave Douglas – working here in a quartet that features some fantastic work on tenor from James Brandon Lewis! Lewis is becoming a musician who's as fluid and adaptable as Douglas has been over his many years and many projects – and the pair explore some great sonic space in the company of guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang – both players who create the sort of unconventional setting that always makes Dave sound his best. Bhatia's got an especially great style – these colors that shift in shape and tone with slight edges, and a sense of pacing that's very unique – which, when coupled with the performances of Douglas and Lewis, makes for an album that might be one of the best Greenleaf releases in eyars. Titles include "Day Dream", "Blood Count", "Third Dream", "Small Bar", "Rain Check", and "Gifts". CD

Ava Mendoza & Devin Hoff RevelsEcholocation ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2023. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A stunning set of punk jazz, and one that maybe hearkens back to key experiments of this nature from the 80s scene – particularly some of the more groundbreaking work on the New York downtown scene! Ava Mendoza plays electric guitar and Devi Hoff play electric bass – but the pair also work here with excellent tenor from James Brandon Lewis, whose presence really balances out the fuzzier electric energy in a great way – different lines, different sounds, and a balance that never has Lewis trying to match the guitars for ferocity, which is a real plus. The quartet also features great drums from Ches Smith – and titles include "The Stumble", "Interwhining", "Dyscalculia", "Babel 17", "New Ghosts", and "Ten Forward". CD

✨✧ William Parker & Patricia NicholsonNo Joke ... CD
ESP, 2021. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record that's as political as you might expect from its title, and a great collaboration between bassist William Parker and spoken word artist Patricia Nicholson! Make no mistake, the set's a jazz record first, with Nicholson's words added in over the top – as the rest of the group features superb contributions from James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Davin Brahja Waldman on alto, and either Gerald Cleaver or Francesco Mela on drums – a core combo that would be great enough on its own! Melanie Dyer adds in some stunning viola lines to the record in a few spots – and titles include "Little Black Kid With The Swollen Stomach", "Struggle", "Wilted Light As Flower", "No Joke", and "Flare Up".
