JK & CoSuddenly One Summer (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
White Whale/Beat Rocket, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A completely amazing bit of psychedelia – recorded in Vancouver by the very young Jay Kaye, who was just 15 at the time – but done with a sound that easily rivals some of the more trippy classics from the big names of the late 60s! The record's got this perfect blend of tunefulness and way-out modes – songs that are certainly sometimes as catchy as material by the Beatles, both other times maybe as blue as work by the Tims of the time, Buckley and Hardin – served up with instrumentation that often echoes Eastern modes, but in the right sort of subtle way – mixed with a bit of fuzz and echo. Way more than the usual obscure oddity set – one that truly has classic depth – with titles that include "Fly", "Break Of Dawn", "Little Children", "Speed", "The Times", "Magical Fingers Of Minerva", and "Dead". Erwin Somer GroupErwin Somer Group ... LP
Universe (Netherlands), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A vibes, percussion, and Fender Rhodes masterpiece – and one that's got some really hard-driving percussion as well! The set's maybe the only one we've ever seen from Dutch musician Erwin Somer – both a vibist and a percussionist, working here strongly in both modes – in a very hip quintet that also features Helmig Van De Vegt on Fender Rhodes and Rudy Van Dijk on tenor – two equally obscure players, but who really make the whole thing great! Tracks are all quite long, and have that loose blend of funk and more exploratory elements we love on the Placebo records from the same time – and the Rhodes is often played with a much harder edge than used on American 70s jazz sessions. Titles include "De Yssel", "Kobus & Tim", "Maatje", "De Veerpoint". and a version of the Keith Jarrett tune "Grow Your Own". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rita HovinkLove Me Or Leave Me (180 gram pressing with CD) ... LP
Decca/678 Records (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Ultra-hip vocals from Rita Hovink – a Dutch singer who's got a way of making even familiar material sound pretty darn fresh! Rita's working here with a cool combo that's got a great sense of arrangement – a way of opening up the tunes and finding some unusual instrumental modes that really pave the way for Hovink's vocal interpretations. The group features Rob Van Dijk on both piano and Hammond, and Wim Overgaauw on guitar – and a few tracks feature guest instrumentation from either Carl Schulze on vibes, Harry Verbeke on tenor, or Thijs Van Leer on flute. The tunes are almost all familiar, but done in very cool ways – and titles include "Sunrise Sunset", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "After You've Gone", "Don't Sleep In The Subway", "Goodbye Charlie", "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day", and "The Fool On The Hill". ✨✧ VariousJazz Room – Compiled By Paul Murphy ... LP
BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really great collection of jazzy groovers – one that effortlessly combines older material and newer recordings, all with a great ear that never tires in its pursuit of the groove! The blend of old and new is a bit like some of the collections we used to love from Gilles Peterson back in the last century – but Paul Murphy definitely has his own style and way of choosing a tune, and like Peterson, he has a great way of setting a new sort of fire with jazz – one that will burn strongly for generations to come! Titles include "Yatra-Ta" by Terje Terasmaa, "African Mailman" by Rhythmagic Orchestra, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Blue Mode, "Foot In The Door" by Onward International, "Zombie" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Emnete (live)" by Imperial Tiger Orchestra, "4 Beat Cha Cha Cha" by Lucas Van Merwijk & His Cubop City Big Band, "Tribute To Mulatu" by Patchworks, "Koumba Fri Fri" by Mamelon, "Sorrow Tears & Blood" by Shola Adisa Farrar & Florian Pellissier Quartet, and "Mambo De La Pinta" by Art Pepper. JamiroquaiEmergency On Planet Earth (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sony (UK), 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99 37.99
The group's first full length album – and a classic batch of soulful funky tunes, handled with the charm and care that would make Jamiroquai one of the best new soul acts to come out of the UK during the 90s. Think Brand New Heavies meets Stevie Wonder meets Steely Dan, and you'll get only part of the picture – as Jay and crew work things together perfectly, blending a wide range of influences into a globally conscious cosmic groove that's a perfect soul platform for the 21st century! 10 tracks: "Didgin' Out", "When You Gonna Learn (JK mix)", "Too Young To Die", "Music Of The Mind", "Hooked Up", "If I Like It I Do It", "Whatever It Is I Just Can't Stop", "Blow Your Mind", "Revolution 1993", and "Emergency On Planet Earth". VariousAfrica Airways 5 – Brace Brace Boogie 1976 to 1982 ... LP
Africa Seven (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99
Africa Airways takes to the skies again – and delivers a wonderful batch of funky soul tracks from the end of the 70s and start of the 80s! The work here is from a period when groups from Nigeria and other scenes were starting to absorb a lot more direct influences from American soul – especially clubbier modes of the disco generation, which were used to create a homespun variety of boogie – in a mode that really dominates this set! Lots of these tracks have upbeat vibes, tight rhythms, and strongly soulful elements in the lead – and titles include "Fine Biscuits" by Dikalo, "Angona Mana" by Mekongo President, "Chibidaba Chibidaba" by JK Mandengue, "Sugar Lump (edit)" by Tala AM, "French Girl" by Fotso, "Dashiki (inst)" by Mulamba, and "Too Young" by Jide Obe.
