✨✧ UltravoxUltravox ... LP
Island, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great first album from Ultravox – recorded in the mid 70s, produced by Brian Eno, and more of a punk rock record than most of their other work! The style here is really great – often driving and very guitar-based – with short, quirky tunes that remind us a bit of Eno's own rock work of the early 70s – and like those records, this one lies in a similar space between bigger glam and emerging punk. John Foxx is certainly at the height of his powers here – and nicely without cliche – and his fluttering vocals bring a sense of drama to the tunes without going too far. Titles include "Saturday Night In The City Of The Dead", "Wide Boys", "Dangerous Rhythm", "The Lonely Hunter", "My Sex", "The Wild The Beautiful & The Damned", "Life At Rainbow's End", and "Slip Away". ✨✧ UnklePsyence Fiction ... LP
Mo Wax/Island, 1998. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the principal albums in trip hop's ascension into the mainstream, and the bright, extroverted flipside to Portishead's darker vision of the late 90s scene. Mo Wax honcho James Lavelle's longstanding Unkle project got a massive makeover when DJ Shadow became the prime sonic architect for the Psyence Fiction LP. Shadow throws everything but the kitchen sink into the thing, working with a wide range of vocalists and collaborators from hip hop innovators (Kool G Rap, Mike D) to whiny alternative rockers (Richard Ashcroft, Thom Yorke). With a project as busy as Unkle, the law of subjectivity pretty much dictates that you're gonna love parts, and hate parts – but Shadow was so on top of his game at the time, he somehow manages to hold it all together. It may not be his best ever work, but Psyence Fiction certainly holds up, and it's an essential piece of the puzzle! Tracks include "Main Title Theme", "Guns Blazing", "Blood Stain", "Unreal", "Chaos", "Rabbit In Your Headlights", Lonely Soul", and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Bunny WailerBlackheart Man ... LP
Island, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
The legendary solo debut of Bunny Wailer – a set that maybe marks him as the most righteous member of The Wailers! The style here is heavy on the roots tip, but there's also a special sort of vibe going on too – these warm currents that are laced with occasional touches of jazz, amidst a mellow-flowing presentation that's right up there with the best of Island Records in the mid 70s – but somehow deeper too! Peter Tosh joins a great lineup that includes Winston Barrett, Robbie Shakespear, Winston Wright, and other Jamaican instrumental giants – but it's definitely Bunny who holds the whole thing together with a spirit that's quite different than his famous previous partner, Bob Marley. Titles include "Blackheart Man", "Rasta Man", "This Train", "Reincarnated Souls", "Armagideon", "The Oppressed Song", "Fig Tree", and "Fighting Against Convictions". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tom WaitsFranks Wild Years ... CD
Island, 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tom Waits's follow-up to Rain Dogs – and a batch of songs that do double duty as a straight-up, stand alone record from his wild years at Island Records – and also as the musical accompaniment to a play he co-wrote with wife Kathleen Brennan! (As Chicagoans, we have a special fondness for that side of the project, since the play premiered here with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.) It's a prime batch of Waits songcraft from this most amazing creative peak period – with the trademark gritty, howled vocals, primal drums, pre-rock horns. Titles include "More Than Rain", "Way Down In The Hole", "Straight To The Top", "Telephone Call From Istanbul", "Train Song", "Cold Cold Ground", "I'll Be Gone", "Yesterday Is Here", "Blow Wind Blow", and "Hang On St Christopher". One of best ever albums by Tom Waits – the beginning of his gutbuckety, Americana Carnivalesque era of dreamlike sinister romance and lovelorn surrealism! The tin pan piano ballads and get pushed a bit to the wayside for Tom's more mysterious and poetic side, and this begins one of the great second acts in pop/rock history. Includes the tracks "Underground", "Shore Leave", "Dave The Butcher", "16 Shells From A Thirty-Ought-Six", "Franks Wild Years", "Down, Down, Down", "Rainbirds", "Just Another Sucker On The Vine", "Town With No Cheer", and others. One of the weird Meters-related New Orleans parade bands from the 70s – similar to the group The Wild Magnolias, but with a sound that's more in a New Orleans mode than a 70s funk one. The Meters play on the record, and the group sings most of the vocals as well – and production is by Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn, with that 70s New Orleans choppy style that was making them both buckets of money at the time! Tracks include "Brother John", "Indian Red", "Hey Hey", "Hey Mama", "Meet De Boys On The Battlefront", and a version of "Hey Pocky Way". LP, Vinyl record album

A gem of a record from Nat Adderley – filled with short soulful groovers, and done with an upbeat vibe that rivals some of Cannonball's best of the 60s! Joe Zawinul handled the arrangements, so there's definitely a strong influence here from the Cannon group – and although the players shift a bit throughout the course of the set, there's a really unified feel – thanks to a top-shelf lineup that includes Seldon Powell on tenor and flute, Ernie Royal on trumpet, Benny Powell on bass trombone, and Willie Bobo on percussion! The set features all original material by Nat – with older gems and new favorites that include "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Never Say Yes, "Jive Samba", "Stony Island", "Junkanoo", and "Work Song". Yasuko AgawaFree Soul – Yasuko Agawa ... CD
Victor (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
A sweet little set – one that brings together some of the grooviest cuts ever recorded by Japanese singer Yasuko Agawa – one of the leading lights of the overseas scene at the end of the 70s! Yasuko's got this really special blend of styles – a bit jazz, a bit soul, often polished a bit in production, but never in a too commercial way – and occasionally set up with some Latin or Brazilian touches in the rhythms, which makes for some mighty nice grooves! Yasuko always able to transcend both the more AOR city pop styles of the time, and some of the more conventional Japanese soul – a very hip singer, as you'll hear on these 19 tracks that include "LA Nights", "New York Afternoon", "Skindo Le Le", "Seabird", "Velas", "Zanzibar", "Pardon My English", "The Universe Is Calling You", "Island Breeze", "Until You Tell Me", "It's My House", "Take A Holiday", and "In The Name Of Love". A jazz funk killer from Aldorande – a French quartet that features some mighty nice keyboards from Florian Pellissier, who we also really love on his own recordings too! The style here is different than those, though – very tight rhythms with a slightly cosmic core – almost jazz funk taking things back from the broken beat generation, finding a way to move with energy learned from that scene, but in a style that's more cohesively funky – classic and contemporary at the same time! The group get a bit of help from added horns at points, and there's also a bit of vocals on the set too – but the main energy comes from the fantastic mix of keyboards and rhythms at the core. A groovy little classic from Atlantic Starr – and a great example of the group's wonderfully catchy way of hitting a groove! The music's never pop, but has some captivating hooks all the way through – sweet little bits mixed in with the funky soul approach of the ensemble – made even better by the great way the vocals get traded back and forth! There's a careful approach to the whole set – a way of putting things together with a good degree of class – and definitely avoiding most of the cliches that would make a similar project sound a lot more clunky. ✨✧ Albert AylerLive On The Riviera ... CD
ESP, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A previously unreleased live performance by Albert Ayler – recorded in France in 1970 for the Maeght Foundation, but not the same material that was issued on the better-known Shandar albums! This concert predates those, and is a unique later outing that's strongly in the spirit of some of Ayler's earliest work for ESP – with longer tracks that serve mostly as a vehicle for Albert's own exploratory passages on tenor and soprano sax! The group's a quartet, with Steve Tintweiss on bass, Allen Blairman on drums, and Mary Maria on soprano sax and a bit of voice – but the way the concert's recorded, Ayler's tone is most strongly upfront in the mix, and seems to dominate most numbers. Titles include "Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe", "Birth Of Mirth", "Masonic Inborn", "Oh Love Of Life", "Heart Love", and "Island Harvest". CD

Albert AylerNew Grass/Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
Late greatness from Albert Ayler – two Impulse albums back to back! New Grass is one of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not died a mysterious young death! Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe is a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

A monster bit of funk that's unlike anything else we can think of! Beginning Of The End hailed from The Bahamas, but don't hold that against them – because instead of being a Caribbean cliche, they took the best part of the island rhythms, and used them to forge an incredible approach to funk! They've got a choppy sound that's the result of some incredibly dexterous guitar, bass, and drums – and which you'll recognize instantly from their one-time hit "Funky Nassau", a killer funk track that never gets old, no matter how many bands cover it over the years! That gem kicks off the album, which then rolls into the monster funky "part 2", which is even better! Chrysalis, 1982. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A weird one from Blondie – and with lot more going for it than the reception at the time would suggest! Following up the diverse pop leanings of Autoamerican, in some ways this is the logical next step from there – Debra's voice way out front in the mix, layers of additional preclusion, horns, global pop accents (post "The Tide Is High", that's a given), oddball covers – The last Blondie album of the 80s, even though it was only 1982, and their last as a band until a late 90s reunion – and as such, ignored by some and maligned by others at the time. It's fair enough for serious fans of the first couple LPs to dismiss the pop pastiche of the last couple, but there's some really interesting stuff here – including a title them written for (and rejected by) the Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" that's radically different than the Bill Conti/Sheena Easton song, a cover the Smokey Robinson-penned "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game", "Danceway", "Orchid Club", "Island Of Lost Souls", "English Boys" and more. A sweet sexy jungle soundtrack – issued for a film that appeared with many different erotic titles – but only this one great set of grooves from Stelvio Cipriani! Given the island setting of the narrative, there's a good amount of acoustic percussion in the mix – congas and other instruments used in ways that really work nicely with the keyboards and guitar – at a level that often comes off with a sort of sweet exotica funk approach! The style is almost a mix of Stelvio's usual groove with the 70s experiments of Mandigo – with a vibe that's completely sublime all the way through, and every bit as arresting as the image on the cover. And as usual with Cipriani, the mellow cuts are as great as the funky ones – a perfect and careful use of the best electric elements, all without ever going too far over the top – or ever sounding too clunky or commercial. CD features 28 tracks in all, and some great notes too! CD

Johnny ConquetRaisins & Almonds Cha Cha Cha & Merengues ... LP
RCA, 1958. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A great little record – and a prime example of the strong Jewish/Latin crossover that was going on in the late 50s and early 60s. The record features the kind of crack cha cha sound that was bringing couples into the Palladium from Long Island, but it's also touched with occasional yiddish bits, like snaking clarinet or choppy percussion. Far from being goofy, these elements actually add a rich shade of emotion to the work, and the result is an extremely complicated Latin session that sparkles with excitement. Titles include "Merengue Mania", "Serching", "Mambo A Bisel", "Sher Cha Cha", "Dates & Figs", and "Sirocco". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mike CooperOh Really/Do I Know You/Trout Steel/Places I Know/Machine Gun Co (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dawn/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A great entry in the ever-diverse catalog of guitarist Larry Coryell in the 70s – a set that has him both returning to Vanguard Records, and to more electric modes than on a few previous records – and also working with the sons of Dave Brubeck in a nicely tight mode! The album's maybe a bit more of a conventional jazz outing than Coryell at the start of the decade – given the Darius, Chris, and Dan Brubeck play acoustic piano, bass, and drums, respectively – but Larry's always changing up the rhythms and tones in these really great ways, and getting some nice inspiration from the percussion of Ray Mantilla, who's also in the group. Titles include "Mediterranean Sundance Entre Dos Aguas", "Sweet Shuffle", "Return", "Rue Gregoire Du Tour", and "Three Mile Island". CD

A surprisingly righteous little album from Stanley Cowell – a set cut after his more famous music for the Strata East label, but one that still hangs onto a similar vibe! The style's a bit tighter than before, but still filled with soul and spirit – thanks to a lineup that includes Julian Priester on trombone, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, and Pat Patrick on reeds – making a key appearance here away from the Sun Ra Arkestra! Cowell plays both piano and keyboards, and the record has a bit of strings, and a bit of vocals – but all used tastefully, in ways that further enforce the depth of the tunes. Tracks include "El Space-O", "Ask Him", "Island Of Haitoo", and "I'm Tryin To Find A Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Martin DennyLatin Village ... LP
Liberty, 1964. Very Good ... $6.99
Martin Denny changes the rhythms from tropical to Latin here – but the overall groove is still highly in his best exotica mode, and nicely augmented by some additional instrumentation! There's some traces here of the shift in production for instrumental music from the time – a bit of electric bass echoing out at the bottom of some cuts, more echo than usual on the piano lines, and a floating quality that's almost even more sublime than the original Liberty sessions. But the core Denny elements are also still in place – tinkling piano, island percussion, and a playful approach to familiar rhythms that never fails to please. The Latin is more of a nod to harder Latin modes than anything else, but it does make for a nice, if subtle change – one that works especially well when Denny's piano is out front, but compressed a bit in the mix. Titles include "Flying Down To Rio", "Ho Ba La La", "Something Latin", "Girl From Ipanema", and "Latin Village". LP, Vinyl record album

Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible package of work by the legendary Georgie Fame – the first to ever fully document his talents, and also present a lot of rare work from every different stage in his career! Yes, there's already been a box on the market that documents Fame's early work – but that material only makes up the first CD or two on this set, and is quickly followed by loads of unusual tracks from the 70s – a time when Georgie was moving past the R&B-inspired sounds of his early career, taking off in new soulful modes, then returning to straighter jazz in later years. All that great span of sounds is here – and is a wonderful journey in music, as Fame never lost his charm, or the groove that first got him going – and the package brings together early Polydor material with later sides for Columbia, Island, Pye, and other labels – and includes 18 tracks that have never appeared before from the late 60s and early 70s, plus lots of other rare singles and unusual cuts too. There's a full unreleased live show from 1974 that's wonderful, some sweet electric early 70s sides that are appearing for the first time, and lots more too – all in a special box with 6CDs, a 48 page hardcover book, and a whopping 110 tracks in all. Nice 2LP set that brings together some of his most striking sessions of the early 60s recorded for Emarcy. This set includes pieces composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James Moody, Phil Woods, Emil Richards, Francisco Aguabella, and Schifrin himself. Tracks are long, and have complicated introductions – then easily give way to the sort of flowing grooves that Schifrin was penning often at the time. Titles include "The Conquerors", "The Chains", "The Swords", "The Empire", and "The Legend Of Atlantis". The set also features Diz playing tracks from Tom McIntosh, one of the scene's brightest arrangers at the time, and a talent who was looming large, thanks to support from folks like Diz and James Moody. Moody's in the group – blowing tenor with a quintet that includes Kenny Barron on piano, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and his tone is incredible, with a darkness that he'd rarely had before, and the whole group has a mixture of modern tones and soulful grooves that's beyond compare! Titles include "November Afternoon", "The Cup Bearers", "The Day After". Also included are songs from the soundtrack for the lost Shirley Clarke verite drama The Cool World. Mal Waldron wrote the material for the score, and Diz plays the music with a moody emotionality that you don't often hear in his other 60's work. There's plenty of guitar in the mix, too – but the real charm comes from the bubbling, percolated electronics – which seem to include some tape tricks along with the analogue synthesizer, and also some great drum machine rhythms too – but all in the best early chunky 70s modes, and not the later sort of 80s drum machine styles! There's only a slight hint of some of the more familiar Turkish rock styles of the period – as the songs here, while tuneful, are usually devoid of lyrics – and would most likely be more at home in the world of Perry & Kingsley than Ersen or Baris Manco. Gullin's known mostly as a baritone player, but on this rare 1973 outing, he plays piano in a number of different settings – all touched with a uniquely creative vision that you don't always encounter on some of his earlier recordings on the large horn. There's slight bits of Monk and Herbie Nichols here, but Gullin also adds some wonderful bits of lyricism – which are quickly picked up by bandmates Lee Konitz, Bernt Rosengren, Red Mitchell, and Island Ostlund. A wonderful session throughout – still incredibly fresh, and unlike anything else we can think of. Titles include "Solvarm Vils", "Like Grass", "The Hambo Combo", "Blue Mail", and "Subway". Sublime sounds from the great Herbie Hancock – presented here in one of his amazing Japanese-only albums from the 70s! The record is a showcase for Hancock in two different modes – as Herbie plays solo acoustic piano on side one, and delivers these really haunting renditions of "Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" – both of them long, and with relaxed exploratory solos. Side two features Herbie on a variety of electric keyboards (moog, arp, etc) – playing with the kind of imagination and funkiness that characterized his best recordings of this period. On this side, Hancock lays down a sweet electric version of "Cantaloupe Island", and a nice spiritual groover called "Nobu" – both of them great, and nearer to the electric vibe of Thrust or Flood. A lyrical masterpiece from the young Herbie Hancock – and a record that's really special for so many different reasons! First, the songs are really long and open – even more so than some of Hancock's other work – with a quality that's balanced between his soul jazz roots, and some of the freer ideas he was exploring with key counterparts of the time! Next, the group features a quartet with Freddie Hubbard on cornet – an instrument he didn't play that often, but which creates a really special sound here – one that's cool and compressed, but still has a sharp bite, too – especially over the inventive rhythms laid down by Ron Carter on bass and Anthony Williams on drums. All players are capable of going out – and have strong "new thing" cred by this point – but they keep it inside all the way through, but with a balanced sense of darkness that's really beautiful. The album features Hancock's classic (and oft-sampled) version of "Cantaloupe Island" – plus "One Finger Snap", "Olioqui Valley", and "The Egg". CD

Soulful 70s work from Herbie Hancock – a record that tightens things up from the Headhunters and Sextant sessions, but which still retains a lot of their depth and charm! Players here including some previous partners – like Bennie Maupin on reeds and Paul Jackson on bass – plus the mighty Wah Wah Watson on guitars, James Levi on drums, Kenneth Nash on percussion, and Ray Parker on additional guitar. Tracks are tightly electric fusion, but still have some of the sharper tones of Herbie's electric work – weird moogy moments mixed into more straight ahead funk – all with a sound that's not unlike some of Ramsey Lewis' best Columbia work of the period. Herbie plays Fender Rhodes, Arp, clavinet, mini-moog, and more – and titles include "Doin' It", "Spider", "Swamp Rat", "People Music", and a remake of "Cantelope Island" that's pretty darn tasty! Del, Souls Of Mischief, Casual and Pep Love return for a damn fine full length. As if you need us to tell you, the Hieros are one of Cali's longest running crews – and Full Circle is, for the most part, a pretty laidback affair. Pep Love really seems to kind of stand out as the leader this time; it's not so much that Pep gets the most mic time (although that might be the case), but his quick, sharp, yet still sort of leisurely delivery kind of serves as the glue between sort of co-captain Casual's harder, more booming delivery and the others. Soulful progeny Goapele appears on "Make Your Move" and the title track, and Abstract Rude rocks a verse in "100,000 Indi". Full Circle may not break any new ground, but it's a warm visit with longtime friends that we wouldn't trade for 100 flavour du jour MCs and producers that get all of that praise in CMJ and Entertainment Weekly. Other tracks include "Fantasy Island", "Powers That Be", "Shift Shape", "Classic", "Chicago", "Halo", "Love Flowin", "Let It Flow", "7 Sixes" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

The music is a nice instrumental extrapolation of ideas that Haruomi Hosono had been exploring on his own solo albums – but is more open and spare overall, with a strong focus on keyboard bits, guitar lines, and the dreamier overall sound of the record. Willis JacksonAfter Hours (Loose/Soul Grabber) ... CD
Prestige, 1963/1967. New Copy ... $5.99 18.98
Don't be put off by the title of the set – because it's not some snoozy "after hours" album of ballads! Instead, it's a great pairing of two rare cookers from the great Willis Jackson – both of them hard-wailing sets that cook in a classic 60s organ/tenor mode! Loose is from 1963, and features Willis grooving in some wonderfully uptight soul jazz lines – working in a format that's a bit more gutbuckety than some of his later work – with Carl Wilson playing chunky Hammond grooves, Frank Robinson punching it up on trumpet, and Bill Jones twanging away on guitar. The set includes a very lively reading of "After Hours", plus the tracks "What Will I Tell My Heart" and "Secret Love". Even better is Soul Grabber, from 1967 – one of our favorite album ever by Willis Jackson – and in fact one of our favorite soul jazz sides of the 60s! There's a mad groove here that's quite different than any of Jackson's earlier work – freer, looser, and more experimental – handled with a sound that's almost fuller in the arrangements, but which also gives the soloists more room to groove around. Willis himself plays the amazing gatorhorn on a number of tracks – a long funny-looking variation on the tenor, and a horn that has an almost George Braith or Roland Kirk-like sound. The rest of the group features some great guitar by Wally Richardson and smoking organ by Carl Wilson – plus electric bass at the bottom from Bob Bushnell, a key component to the harder-hitting quality of the grooves. The set features a fantastic version of Baden Powell's "Song of Ossahana", plus great covers of "Sunny", "Girl Talk", and "Ode to Billy Joe" – and the tracks "Soul Grabber", "Alfie", "I Dig Rock & Roll Music", and "Rhode Island Red". For space reasons, the CD omits the track "Y'all" from the album Loose. CD

A totally wonderful album from the young Keith Jarrett – and a set that's different than most of the pianist's other well-known modes – not his solo improvisations, not his successful trio material, and not even his more outside quartet modes of the 70s – but instead this incredible criss-crossing of sounds that really stands apart from most of his other records! The album features Keith on piano and soprano sax – an instrument he played more early on – in open, freewheeling tracks that often mix tuneful passages with more rhythmic pulsations – handled with a core group that includes Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums, working with guitar from Sam Brown, tenor from Dewey Redman, percussion from Airto, and some larger string and brass arrangements too! Jarrett also plays electric piano at times, and the album has some of the lyricism of Treasure Island, but with a very different vibe – spun out beautifully over the space of the double-length set. Ray Davies is really coming into his own by the time of this third album by The Kinks – penning almost all the tunes in the set, and really starting to stretch out with some of his more unique ideas! The songs are already beginning to show that picture postcard side of British pop that was the Kinks stock in trade during their best years – and the themes and subjects are really expanded from the group's music of the previous years – already shaking off their American influence, and bringing the world a decidedly English version of rock and roll. Of course, the album does feature the group's wonderful cover of "Milk Cow Blues" – still a nice link to the earlier years – plus the Davies originals "When I See That Girl Of Mine", "I Am Free", "Till The End Of The Day", "The World Keeps Going Round", "I'm On An Island", "It's Too Late", "You Can't Win", "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", "Gotta Get The First Plane Home", and "Ring The Bells".
