One of the best-selling albums ever from Bob Marley – a classic collection of work from his all-too-short career – and one that's gone onto become as famous as Marley's individual records themselves! The collection really allows all the classics to resonate strongly, in a track order that opens them up even more – and the package also features a live track, and a production with Lee Perry too. Titles include "Get Up Stand Up", "Exodus", "Stir It Up", "Easy Skanking", "No Woman No Cry (live)", "Punky Reggae Party", "Satisfy My Soul", and "Redemption Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Bob Marley & The WailersBabylon By Bus ... CD
Island/Tuff Gong, 1978. Used ... $4.99
A classic double live album from Bob Marley & The Wailers – presented and packaged at a level that's really a cut above the usual set of that nature from the time! The group's in excellent form in a concert setting – and there's more than enough magic here to warrant the extended length of the set – as Marley and the group really open up on some classics, as well as some other gems that maybe even sparkle more on this album. Titles include "Exodus", "Stir It Up", "Rat Race", "Concrete Jungle", "Lively Up Yourself", "Is This Love", "Punky Reggae Party", "Heathen", "Jamming", and "Kinky Reggae". CD

Bob Marley & The WailersBob Marley & The Wailers – Live ... CD
Island/Tuff Gong, 1975. Used ... $3.99
A great global showcase for the growing power of Bob Marley – an excellent live set recorded in London in 1975, and a date that shows Bob and The Wailers working with the crowd in this really universal spirit! The group's almost got a funkier current here than on some of their studio record – and their sharp edges are warmed up by female backing vocals which seem almost to act as a bridge between Marley's lead, and the very enthusiastic spirit of the crowd! The whole thing's great – and titles include totally burning versions of "Trenchtown Rock", "Burnin & Lootin", "Them Belly Full", "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman, No Cry", "I Shot The Sheriff", and "Get Up Stand Up". This reissue also includes "Kinky Reggae" as a bonus track. CD

✨✧ Bob Marley & The WailersCatch A Fire – Deluxe Edition ... CD
Island, 1973. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The first Bob Marley album on Island Records – and the start of a really legendary run that would not only transform reggae in the 70s, but the rest of popular music as well! Chris Blackwell's partially at the helm on production, but the album was mostly recorded in classic Kingston studios – Randy's, Dynamic, and Harry J's – and retains the same vibe as some of Marley's earlier work, but with more of the forward-thinking vision he brought to his time at Island. Bunny Livingston lays down some excellent percussion on the set – and rhythm is from the team of Aston and Carlton Barrett on bass and drums. Titles include the classic "Stir It Up" – plus "Slave Driver", "Kinky Reggae", "High Tide Or Low Tide", and "Concrete Jungle". This expanded deluxe edition also has a full CD of the more raw Jamaican versions, which on almost all songs are the superior takes to our ears! CD

Island, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet grooves from the great Bob Marley – a set cut at a time when Marley was really riding his international fame – and able to create the kind of music that reached out way more than conventional reggae! The Kingston roots of the sound are still very firmly in place – but there's also a more globally-expansive vision here too – partly the tight production on the music, partly the warm feelings that ebb and flow throughout the entire set – a vibe that's very different than American soul, and which has turned out to be surprisingly encompassing over the years. Titles include "Is This Love", "Running Away", "Kaya", "Satisfy My Soul", "Easy Skanking", "Sun Is Shining", "She's Gone", "Misty Morning", "Crisis", and "Time Will Tell". CD

✨✧ John MartynBless The Weather (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Island/Universal (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album that may well be John Martyn's crowning moment of genius – a time when he soared forward from his spare sound of a few short years ago – and found a way to bring in all these jazzy currents to his music, but all without ever going for a style that was ever over-arranged or commercially produced! Martyn's voice is amazing – completely captivating, and full of all these wonderful twists and turns – as are his guitar lines too – never in any sort of overdone way, but with a subtle power that really gives the album the sort of glow that's evoked by the cover image. The set features guest work from Richard Thomposon, Roger Powell, and Beverley Martyn – and titles include "Go Easy", "Bless The Weather", "Sugar Lump", "Walk To The Water", "Just Now", "Head & Heart", "Let The Good Things Come", "Back Down The River", and "Singin In The Rain" – with a good amount of bonus tracks including alternate takes of "Go Easy", "Walk On Water", "Back Down The River", and a single version of "May You Never". ✨✧ John MartynSolid Air ... CD
Island, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful little record from John Martyn – a set in which he's really perfected his talents, and found a way to stand out from just about anyone else in the pack – including the best of his British folk rock contemporaries! Martyn plays acoustic guitar, but the record's hardly folk at this point – because his vocals have all these jazzy changes, maybe a bit like Joni Mitchell was hitting at the same point in her career – more sophisticated, but very organic and never forced – with this quality that makes just about every word that comes from Martyn's voice resonate with a really fantastic quality. His guitar playing is as wonderful as ever – and again, filled with jazzy phrasing without ever being jazz at all – and the whole thing is maybe a record to proudly put Martyn in the company of Nick Drake on his few classics for Island. Titles include "Solid Air", "Over The Hill", "I'd Rather Be The Devil", "The Easy Blues", "The Man In The Station", "Dreams By The Sea", and "Don't Want To Know". CD

Tightly grooving, jukebox thumping, hard wailing organ jazz from the great Jimmy McGriff – one of his best albums for the Sue label! Jimmy's got a sound here that's a lot rawer than earlier work – especially on the album's originals, like "Spindletop", "One Of Mine", "Blip Time", "Gospel Time", and "The Last Minute" – nice little numbers that cross the bridge between R&B and soul jazz with that heavy approach that always made Jimmy a favorite on the small combo lounge jazz scene of the time. One of the crowning moments of the Paradise Garage scene – when the sound of the underground burst out loud on the airwaves, and Larry Levan found himself working this big single for Island Records. NicoEnd ... LP
Island, 1974. Very Good+ ... $43.99
One of Nico's darkest albums – and the kind of record we always suggest to those who doubt her genius! The incredibly spare set has Nico playing harmonium, which makes for a spooky off-kilter sound that really gives the record a somber approach – especially as the instrument sounds a heck of a lot like her voice – very dark and moody, with lots of offbeat tones! Nico also gets some hip help, too – as the set features Brian Eno on keyboards, and production by John Cale – who also plays a huge variety of odd instruments too. Titles include a sublime 9 minute reading of The Doors' "The End", one that makes the original seem like candy floss – plus the tracks "Secret Side", "Innocent & Vain", "Valley Of The Kings", "We've Got The Gold", and "It Has Not Taken Long". Island/4 Men With Beards, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Essential stuff, whether you're a fan of roots reggae, Jamaican soul or the otherworldly antics of the Upsetter! Though you might not know it from some of the bitter rebukes Scratch later laid to wax against him, Romeo was clearly his favorite son when it came to vocalists, and got the prodigal treatment when it came to the choice of rhythms to voice. A monumental effort on both their parts, this album continues to amaze us with every spin, Romeo's soulful inflections matched perfectly to the dark, swampy Black Ark grooves. ✨✧ Poncho SanchezTrane's Delight ... LP
Island Empire, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $33.99 34.98
Poncho Sanchez is a genius – one of the leading lights of the west coast Latin scene at the end of the 70s, and a musician who's never failed to give us his best over the decades – so much so, that he may well be one of the few (along with Eddie Palmieri) who've continued to keep the jazz sound of their style growing strongly during the 21st Century! This album's an instant treasure – a nod to the greatness of John Coltrane, as you'd guess from the title – but a record that's really as distinct and powerful as Poncho's best from his older catalog – really creatively put together, with a focus not just on rhythms, but on really well-spun, well-conceived solos – modern on the edges, but swinging throughout – with work from a group that includes Francisco Torres on trombone, Ron Blake on trumpet, Robert Hardt on alto and tenor, and Andy Langham on piano. Torres handled the arrangements, and the album's got all the percussion you'd expect from a Sanchez album too – on titles that include "Soul Bourgeoisie", "Liberia", "Giant Steps", "Yam'mote", "Trane's Delight", "Todo Termino", "Sube", and "Blue Train". A legendary record from Show & AG – and one of the best of the early 90s from the DITC camp! Runaway Slave came about during the end of an era when major labels still seemed to be hungry to popularize underground hip hop without watering it down – with London/Polygram stepping in to market & distribution for Payday Records – a label that ultimately served as an early proving ground for some of the most vital and popular hip hop artists ever – but this album has always been an underground phenomenon. It's a masterful one at that! Titles include that classic track "Bounce Ta This", "Represent", "Fat Pockets", "40 Acres And My Props", "Hold Ya Head", "Runaway Slave", "Hard To Kill", "Soul Clap" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Still one of THE standout records of the post-punk years – the simple but effective dub statement of three London ladies with decidedly left wing politics! The record's in a format that would later be copped by dozens of groups – one that mixes together post-punk and heavy dub – the former of which is served up with some nice rough guitars and crackly vocals, and the latter which is done even better with some super-solid production by Dennis Bovell! Titles include "Shoplifting", "Spend Spend Spend", "Instant Hit", "Newtown", "Ping Pong Affair", and the seminal "Typical Girls"! ✨✧ Spontaneous Music EnsembleKaryobin – Are The Imaginary Birds Said To Live In Paradise ... CD
Island/Emanem (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first albums ever from this legendary British creative force in jazz – heard here at a time when the group was a quintet – with the mighty drummer John Stevens at the lead – alongside mindblowingly fresh performances from Evan Parker on soprano sax, Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Derek Bailey on guitar, and Dave Holland on bass! The players are so new to the scene that Bailey is actually billed as "Dennis" on the back of the original album cover, and Kenny is listed as "Wheel" – but they all play here with the confidence and vision that would soon make them giants – and key players who'd show the world that the UK scene was every bit as free-thinking as those in the US and Europe. The album features one long improvisation – and Bailey is especially wonderful in the setting – making these ringing notes that scatter and skitter alongside Parker's beautiful soprano work – egged on by Steven's to move freely over the drum kit. The final album from Spooky Tooth – at least during their initial run – and a surprisingly strong set that really points to a huge amount of new directions and ideas! Mike Patto is in the group this time around – and the presence of his vocals and deft instrumental work really give Spooky Tooth a renewed focus and sense of energy – which seems to push the guitars of Mick Jones into territory that's even bolder than before – with more than a few hints of the Foreigner to come! Gary Wright's vocals are still at center stage, but the whole album almost feels like the whole group coming together to really stretch their wings and soar. Titles include "Fantasy Satisfier", "Two Time Love", "Higher Circles", "Hell Or High Water", "The Hoofer", "I'm Alive", and "The Mirror". LP, Vinyl record album

Island (UK), 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first and greatest album together from Richard & Linda Thompson – and easily one of best folk rock records of the 70s – and perhaps any other decade! That's not hyperbole – I Want To See The Bright Lights is so deeply effective, song after song, you're stunned by the end of it! Electric guitars and some fairly heavy drums for this kind of material work with accordion, krummhorn and other British and European folk elements – which makes for a unique vibe. When you pair that with such great original songs – and Linda's and Richard's voices, leading the way – it's purely incredible. Island, 1972. Used ... $8.99
While the original Island issue of the album Funky Kingston here in the states was actually a compilation of tracks from the original Jamaican and UK issues of the album by that title and the In The Dark LP cut the same year, this two-for-one CD reissue finally sets the record straight, packaging both fine, funky LPs on one CD! While the In The Dark set had a slightly more funky edge to it, we're making no bones here, as all the numbers here are sweet soulful reggae at its best, making it no wonder why Toots & The Maytals were to become one of reggae's biggest international stars. 21 tracks in all, including "Funky Kingston", "In The Dark", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Time Tough", "54-46 Was My Number", "Pressure Drop", "Sit Right Down", "Having A Party", "Revolution", "Love's Gonna Walk Out On Me" and "Fever". Island/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
A classic moment from Frederick "Toots" Hibbert – a set that's maybe his equivalent to some of the key Island Records albums of the 70s from Bob Marley & The Wailers! Like those, the production here is top-shelf – handled partly by Joe Boyd, who brings a very respectful vibe to the set – and perhaps even goes for more of the soulful currents in Toots' vocals than before – at least in ways that might cross over more to American and British audiences than in the early days. Hibbert really seems to take to the spirit of the moment, and rises up with these beautifully expressive passages – of the sort that he may never have hit this well again! Titles include "Everybody Needs Lovin", "Living In The Ghetto", "So Bad", "Never You Change", "Rastaman", "Premature", and "Reggae Got Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

A pivotal album in the career of Ultravox – one that has the group shifting from their rougher roots, into the sweeter, more synth-styled sounds that became their lasting legacy on modern music! Gone is the quirkiness of the first few records, but in its place is one of the best (and first) efforts to refine earlier experiments with electronics into a tighter, more pop-styled mode – one that's aided strongly here by the production efforts of Conny Plank, whose work in the electric prog years of the German scene really help give this record a real sense of depth! Island, 1987. Used ... $4.99
Tom Waits's follow-up to Rain Dogs – and a batch of songs that do double duty as a straight-up, stand alone record from his wild years at Island Records – and also as the musical accompaniment to a play he co-wrote with wife Kathleen Brennan! (As Chicagoans, we have a special fondness for that side of the project, since the play premiered here with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.) It's a prime batch of Waits songcraft from this most amazing creative peak period – with the trademark gritty, howled vocals, primal drums, pre-rock horns. Titles include "More Than Rain", "Way Down In The Hole", "Straight To The Top", "Telephone Call From Istanbul", "Train Song", "Cold Cold Ground", "I'll Be Gone", "Yesterday Is Here", "Blow Wind Blow", and "Hang On St Christopher". One of the weird Meters-related New Orleans parade bands from the 70s – similar to the group The Wild Magnolias, but with a sound that's more in a New Orleans mode than a 70s funk one. The Meters play on the record, and the group sings most of the vocals as well – and production is by Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn, with that 70s New Orleans choppy style that was making them both buckets of money at the time! Tracks include "Brother John", "Indian Red", "Hey Hey", "Hey Mama", "Meet De Boys On The Battlefront", and a version of "Hey Pocky Way". CD

A gem of a record from Nat Adderley – filled with short soulful groovers, and done with an upbeat vibe that rivals some of Cannonball's best of the 60s! Joe Zawinul handled the arrangements, so there's definitely a strong influence here from the Cannon group – and although the players shift a bit throughout the course of the set, there's a really unified feel – thanks to a top-shelf lineup that includes Seldon Powell on tenor and flute, Ernie Royal on trumpet, Benny Powell on bass trombone, and Willie Bobo on percussion! A well-done collection of some of King Sunny Ade's first recordings in Nigeria – presented in a package with great sound, and a heck of a lot of music overall! The work here has been reissued on other CDs by African Songs in the UK, but this collection is much more all-encompassing – and features a whopping 75 minutes of music, pulled from a variety of different releases. Sunny's at the lead on guitar and vocals on all tracks – and the music is a nicely spare approach to juju, one that's different from his better-known later work on Island. Many titles here are extended medley numbers that are over 15 minutes in length – and tracks include "Ori Mmi Maje N'Te", "Nibi Lekeleke Gbe Nfosho", "I Sele Yi Leju", and "Sunny Special". CD

Afro-Salseros De SenegalEn La Habana ... CD
Popular African Music (Germany), 2001. Used ... $16.99
A perfect bit of uncanny cultural exchange! In 2001 a Cuban ambassador visiting Senegal was blown away by the Afro-Cuban music he heard there. Shocked when he learned that they had never been to his island he initiated an official visit. Los Afro-Salseros de Senegal was the ad hoc combo assembled for the occasion featuring Senegal's greatest salseros, drawn from some of the country's most legendary bands – but here they play together as if they've worked with one another for decades. Singers Labal Sosseh, and Pepe Fall were members of the mighty Star Band, vocalist Mar Seck and guitarist Yahya Fall worked in Number 1 de Dakar, while avuncular tenor saxophonist Issa Cissokho is a charter member of Orchestra Baobab. The album was recorded in Havana's legendary Egrem studio on the 2001 visit, and while the song structures are pure Afro-Caribbean magic, the arresting vocals, the bubbling percussion, and the killer guitar work could've only come from Senegal. Tracks include "Aminata", "Borom Gal", "Diongoma", "Africa", and "El Manisero". CD

A jazz funk killer from Aldorande – a French quartet that features some mighty nice keyboards from Florian Pellissier, who we also really love on his own recordings too! The style here is different than those, though – very tight rhythms with a slightly cosmic core – almost jazz funk taking things back from the broken beat generation, finding a way to move with energy learned from that scene, but in a style that's more cohesively funky – classic and contemporary at the same time! The group get a bit of help from added horns at points, and there's also a bit of vocals on the set too – but the main energy comes from the fantastic mix of keyboards and rhythms at the core. Beginning Of The EndNassau Funk ... CD

Fantastic funk from Beginning Of The End – one of the coolest, grooviest, most unique funk groups of the 70s – and one who've got a real criss-crossing of styles in their sound! As you'd guess from the title, these guys hail from Nassau, in the Bahamas – but their sound is hardly the stale calypso of the earlier generation, or some of the more familiar island hybrids that were playing for the tourists. Instead, these guys completely reinvent funk from the ground up – adding in lots of their own special styles of rhythm and inflection, with elements that were learned from their home scene, but then refitted for a mode that's much more American funk overall – making these guys one of the few island acts to challenge the likes of Fatback or Kool & The Gang! The set's an extremely well-chosen batch of tracks from the group's few recordings – and titles include the classic "Funky Nassau (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Monkey Tamarind", "Super Woman", "Doin The Funky Do", "That's What I Get", "When Se Made Me Promise", "In The Deep Bahamian Boogie", "Fishman", "Pretty Girl", "I've Got The News", "Bluestrain", "Jump In The Water", "Gee Whiz It's Christmas", "Sleep On Dream On", "Trip To Nowhere", and "Come Down Baby". The group here is a trio – with the great Edmondy Krater on ka, djembe, and percussion – all instruments that are often used in ways that are as melodic as they are rhythmic – and blended with more percussion from Olivier Maurieres and harp from Anne Bacqueyrisse, the last of which is clearly a different variation on the instrument than the more familiar European mode – used to accent some great elements in the percussion with great colors and tones alongside the grooves. Sweet stepping soul from George Benson – a batch of tracks that wraps up his wonderful vocals and guitar with some great contemporary rhythms! The vibe here is nicely laidback – never too smooth, nor some of the more commercial territory that Benson was trying for a decade before – and in a way, it's almost as if George has been digging some of the less mainstream soul sounds of the time, as he's hitting a sound that would certainly appeal to steppers in Chicago, or the indie soul and smooth jazz scene of the early 90s. Benson's got a great way of scatting lightly with his guitar, and there's a leanness to most of the tracks, despite a relatively full lineup of players. ✨✧ BlondieHunter ... LP
Chrysalis, 1982. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A weird one from Blondie – and with lot more going for it than the reception at the time would suggest! Following up the diverse pop leanings of Autoamerican, in some ways this is the logical next step from there – Debra's voice way out front in the mix, layers of additional preclusion, horns, global pop accents (post "The Tide Is High", that's a given), oddball covers – The last Blondie album of the 80s, even though it was only 1982, and their last as a band until a late 90s reunion – and as such, ignored by some and maligned by others at the time. It's fair enough for serious fans of the first couple LPs to dismiss the pop pastiche of the last couple, but there's some really interesting stuff here – including a title them written for (and rejected by) the Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" that's radically different than the Bill Conti/Sheena Easton song, a cover the Smokey Robinson-penned "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game", "Danceway", "Orchid Club", "Island Of Lost Souls", "English Boys" and more. Mercury/Playback, 1975. Used ... $3.99
Definitely something nice from the great Roy C – one of the overlooked soul singer's great 70s albums for Mercury – all of which are ripe for rediscovery by a younger generation! This one's slightly different than the rest, in that the album was recorded at the Dynamic Studios in Kingston – where Roy mixes his deep soul vocals with some slight Jamaican touches – not an outright reggae move, but just a bit of an island kick to some of the rhythms, mostly in the drums – which give some of these tunes a really sweet-stepping groove. The approach is maybe a bit like Johnny Nash, but much hipper – given the quality level of Roy C from his early years in The Honeydrippers onto these solo sides. Horace Ott arranged most of the album – and titles include "Second Time Around", "Virgin Girl", "If I Could Love You Forever", "Loneliness Has Got a Hold On Me", "Fireside", and "My Girl". A sweet sexy jungle soundtrack – issued for a film that appeared with many different erotic titles – but only this one great set of grooves from Stelvio Cipriani! Given the island setting of the narrative, there's a good amount of acoustic percussion in the mix – congas and other instruments used in ways that really work nicely with the keyboards and guitar – at a level that often comes off with a sort of sweet exotica funk approach! The style is almost a mix of Stelvio's usual groove with the 70s experiments of Mandigo – with a vibe that's completely sublime all the way through, and every bit as arresting as the image on the cover. And as usual with Cipriani, the mellow cuts are as great as the funky ones – a perfect and careful use of the best electric elements, all without ever going too far over the top – or ever sounding too clunky or commercial. Dawn/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

The album's maybe a bit more of a conventional jazz outing than Coryell at the start of the decade – given the Darius, Chris, and Dan Brubeck play acoustic piano, bass, and drums, respectively – but Larry's always changing up the rhythms and tones in these really great ways, and getting some nice inspiration from the percussion of Ray Mantilla, who's also in the group. Mateo handles some of the arrangements – with Gustavo Beytelmann and Alberto Nunez Palacio too – and the music is full of beautiful elements that resonate strongly with the voice, in complex genre-stepping modes that bridge a space between late 60s A&M and Island Records. Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". ✨✧ Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger, & The TrinityStreetnoise ... LP
Atco, 1969. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
Some great funky grooves by this legendary British ensemble – featuring excellent keyboard work by Brian Auger, recorded during the period when he was really beginning to stretch out a bit, and hit a much more open-ended kind of sound. Julie Driscoll is still on vocals, singing in her raw sound, but Brian's Trinity group gets a fair number of nice instrumental moments on the set – which are greatly appreciated! Titles include the classic and sample laden "Light My Fire", "Czechoslovakia", "Finally Found You Out", "In Search Of The Sun", "Ellis Island", "I've Got Life", and "Save The Country". Don DrummondIn Memory Of Don Drummond ... LP
Studio One (Jamaica), Late 60s. Very Good ... $19.99
Nice, nice instrumental ska laid down by slide master Don Drummond! Don's full tone and jazzy style enriched many Studio One sides, most signifigantly those of the Skatalites, which a few of the numbers here are reminiscent of. Includes "Man In The Street", "Don Cosmic", "Sound One", "Don D Serenade", "Reload", "Vat 7", "Scandal", "Cool Shade", "Lawless Street", and "Green Island". 14 tracks in all. LP, Vinyl record album
(White label pressing with black print and deep groove. NOTE – This copy no longer has the cover, and comes in a plain sleeve.)

✨✧ Don DrummondMemorial Album (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A mighty tribute to the great Don Drummond – the trombonist whose tone and timing really helped the 60s Jamaican scene find its groove! Don played on countless vocal and instrumental sessions before he left this planet all too soon – and this smoking memorial album is a mighty testament to his powers – an all-instrumental package that's filled with strong solo moments by Drummond in a variety of settings, mostly in a rocksteady groove! There's great organ and tenor on a number of cuts (Jackie Mittoo and Tommy McCook?) – and titles include "Street Corner", "Latin Goes Ska", "Green Island", "Garden Of Love", "Feeling Fine", "Silver Dollar", "Let George Do It", "Knock Out Punch", and "Dr Decker". LP, Vinyl record album

Edison Electric BandBless You Dr Woodward ... CD
Atlantic/Water, 1970. New Copy ... $7.99 17.99
The only album ever issued by this very groovy group – a quartet who wandered from Philly to San Francisco in the late 60s – where they clearly picked up the right sort of energy to let their freak flag fly! Yet these guys aren't totally Bay Area, either – as they've got more of the east coast roots that echo their start in the Philly scene a few years before – almost that mix of tightness and hipness that graced some of the best Long Island groups who were finding their way into New York during the same generation. There's plenty going on here – especially some nice songwriting, and a way of appreciating influences from blues and soul music – yet never coming across as a blues rock band at all. Titles include "Baby Leroy", "Over The Hill", "Ship Of The Future", "West Wind", "Royal Fool", "Lebanese Packhorse", and "Smokehouse". CD

✨✧ Duke EllingtonConcert In The Virgin Islands ... LP
Reprise, 1965. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the great entries in Duke Ellington's "exotic" albums of the 60s – records that aren't exactly exotica by any stretch of the imagination, but which have musical themes that were inspired by the international travels of the Ellington band at the time! In this case, the locale is the Virgin Islands – where Ellington performed in 1965, and returned home to record this set as a memory of tunes played by the band in St Croix and St Thomas. The core of the set is the initial Virgin Islands suite – made up of four new tunes that include "Island Virgin", "Virgin Jungle", "Fiddler On The Diddle", and "Jungle Kitty" – all nicely rhythmic numbers that explore some fresh themes with especially nice horn solos from the members of the group. Other tracks are older numbers performed on the tour, given a bit of a new twist here – on titles that include "Fade Up", "Mysterious Chick", "The Opener", and "Big Fat Alice's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EMI (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD

"I Ain't No Joke" is a classic from the first Eric B & Rakim LP that still holds up today – and "Extended Beat" is the instrumental version. "Eric B is on the Cut" is nearly four minutes of Eric B cutting up parts of "My Melody". 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Victor FeldmanVenezuela Joropo ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic record, and perhaps the best thing that Victor Feldman ever did. He takes his vibes and marimba – which are normally very snoozy in a jazz context – and gives them a nice Now Sound twist, with a cool studio South American feel. He plays with some great LA studio players – like Dennis Budimir, Bill Perkins, and Emil Richards – in a nice small combo that works well throughout. Great stuff, including nice versions of "Pavane", "Frenesi", and "Summer Island". LP, Vinyl record album

Walter Gavitt FergusonLegendary Tape Recordings Vol 2 – The King Of Calypso Limonense ... LP
Bongo Joe (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
Not the kind of calypso that was issued by the big American labels in the 50s – and instead, sounds that have a sound, style, and overall approach that's maybe a lot more similar to American blues from the rural scene! The tracks here are all pulled from the personal archive of Walter Gavitt Ferguson – recorded mostly at his home, on cassette, over the space of many years in which Ferguson was growing in international fame, even while never leaving the space of his island. Recording quality is nice and raw – of the sort you'd be more likely to hear from rural Mississippi or Georgia bluesmen in some 60s ethnographic project – and the guitar phrasing is as biting as Walter's delivery of the lyrics. Titles on this second volume include "Not A Pugilist", "Roberto Tour", "You Cannot Bathe A Puss", "Hoorah For Paula", "Lock Me Up Neighbour", "One Pants Tearing Off", "Gal Must Be Take Me For A Fool", and "All Going Up To Glory". One of the most ambitious albums to date from the mighty Greg Foat – a set that's different than some of his more intimate affairs, in that it features key contributions from British jazz giants both young and old – all working with Greg's piano, Fender Rhodes, and vibes in a style that's deeply spiritual, and filled with power! The album's hardly the pacific affair you might guess from the title – nothing too placid, as the energy really builds between members of a lineup that includes Moses Boyd and Clark Tracey on drums, Heather Wrighton on harp, Art Themen on tenor and soprano, Eric Young on percussion, and Warren Hampshire on guitars – all at a level that makes the record the deepest jazz album that Foat has ever given us! Titles include "Pointe Venus", "Mother's Love", "After The Storm", "Island Life", "Man Vs Machine", "Nikinakinu", "Anticipation", and "Symphonie Pacifique". CD
