Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra (Francois Tusques)L'Intercommunal ... LP
Disques Vendemiaire/Souffle Continu (France), 1978. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 34.99
A record that wonderfully shows just how different the French avant jazz scene was during the 70s – and how its musicians found a way to work creatively, but in a space that was very much their own! The Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra is a loose collective of artists from different local scenes in France – jazz communes, if you will – all given direction and inspiration by the pianist Francois Tusques, who'd been more of a free improviser a few years before, but was really trying to find a new voice for experimental music by the time of these recordings! Tusques is on piano on all selections – and the lineup shifts throughout, with work from Jo Maka on alto, Michel Marre and Jean Mereu on trumpets, Adolf Winkler on trombone, Tangue Le Dore on electric bass, and Sam Ateba and Kilkus on percussion – all playing together in a mixture of structures and freedom, often with currents from global influences – almost echoing some of the hip 70s work on the Saravah label. Titles include "Olendja", "Blues Pour Miguel Enriquez", "Mar Jo Cantar No Fabia Mazir", "L'Heure Est A La Lutte", and "Piano Dazibao". LP, Vinyl record album

Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra (Francois Tusques)Le Musichien ... LP
Edizione Corsica/Souffle Continu (France), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
Maybe some of the most spiritual work we've ever heard from French pianist Francois Tusques – working here on two long tracks that really show some strong development in his Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra concept since the 70s! The tracks are partly modal and rhythmic in structure, but have wilder twists and turns along the way – not ear-bracing avant blasts, but instead some of the more long-haired expressions that had been showing up in French avant jazz from the mid 70s onward – a very special brew that makes this album wonderfully unique, even amidst other unique recordings on the scene! The title track, "Le Musichien" is a long track with Tusques on piano, Sylvain Kassap on tenor, Yebga Likoba on soprano sax, Ramadolf on trombone, Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass, and Carlos Andreau on voice – really spinning out some beautiful sounds. The flipside features "Les Amis D'Afrique", another fantastic number with many of the same players – but also with Daniele Dumas on soprano sax, and twin congas from Sam Ateba and Kilikus, who really add a lot to the track.
