✨✧ Inner CityBig Fun ... CD
Virgin, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
Detroit underground hits the mainstream – in a seminal album of crossover dance tracks! Kevin Saunderson and vocalist Paris Grey, along with help from Juan Atkins, craft a set of tunes that managed to hook the rest of the world on the electro sound that had been bubbling under in the Motor City for most of the 80s. And sure, there's more hooks and less darkness than on some of Saunderson's earlier work – but is that such a bad thing? Not to our ears, as lots of these tunes have still held up quite well over the years. Titles include "Paradise", "Ain't Nobody Better", "Big Fun", "Do You Love What You Feel", "Good Life", and "Secrets Of The Mind". CD

✨✧ Grover Washington JrInner City Blues ... CD
Kudu/Verve, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet funky jazz from Grover Washington – an early standout session from his classic years on Kudu Records, put together with hip arrangements from the mighty Bob James! The record's got the same spacious sense of grooving as James' first few for CTI – a style that's funky fusion, but a bit more laidback than most – not nearly as jamming, and with almost as much focus on lean rhythms as on key solos from the players in the group! Most tracks have a long, open sort of feel – and in addition to alto and tenor from Grover, other instrumentation includes organ from Richard Tee, guitar from Eric Gale, drums from Idris Muhammad, percussion from Airto, and electric piano from Bob James himself. Titles include versions of "Mercy Mercy Me", "Ain't No Sunshine/Theme From Man & Boy", "Until It's Time For You To Go", and "Inner City Blues". CD

✨✧ VariousInner City Sounds – Gritty Soul & Underground Funk From The Vaults Of Inner City Records ... CD
Luv N' Haight, Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Funky soul from the west coast – and a motherlode of tracks that you've probably never heard! Inner City Records was a small time funk powerhouse – owned and run by organ player George Semper, who cut some mighty fine records on his own! The label's not to be confused with the New York-based jazz label Inner City – because this one was a much more down-n-dirty funky one – and cut some killer work in a deep deep mode, much of which was never issued before – and is making a long-overdue first appearance here! The tracks have some seriously fine jazzy work in them – snapping funk, with a hard and dirty edge, played by performers that include Charles Owens, Rodney Franklin, and James Gadson – all of whom would later go onto become superstars in their own right. A number of tracks have vocals, too – and titles include "Plastic Situation" by Ron & Candy, "In One Peace" by In One Peace, "Funkorgy" by Funkafreek, "Tenderness" by Funkhouse with Candy, "Thank U" by The R&B Classic Funk Band, "It's Insane" by In One Peace, "Spread The News" and "Hands Of Time" by Perfect Circle, "Sticky Boom Boom" by United Soul Association, and "Funktime" by Funkproof. Otis BlackwellThese Are My Songs ... CD
Inner City, 1977. Used ... $8.99
Otis Blackwell takes back his songs – providing his own new versions of tunes that were recorded famously by a host of rock, pop, and R&B artists back in the 50s! The 70s session is definitely done as part of the generation that was "giving back" to the roots of rock and roll – and Blackwell's performance here is possibly more tilted towards the rockers in the room than the R&B fans, given the used of heavy guitar on the record, and the cleaner style of production. Still, as a revivalist set, it's got plenty to offer – and Blackwell working with a small combo for backing, and sounding a bit Elvis-like at times – no surprise, given that Otis was supposedly a big influence on Presley. Titles include "All Shook Up", "Fever", "Daddy Rollin Stone", "Great Balls Of Fire", "Don't Be Cruel", "Searchin", "Hey Little Girl", and "Handy Man". CD

Sun RaLive at Montreux ... CD
Inner City, 1976. Used 2CD ... $14.99
One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The album was recorded during the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has a bit more focus and polish than some of the other Arkestra live material from the time – a mature, coherent sound that almost points the way towards some of their work to come in the 80s – when Ra and the group were finally reaching the wider audience they deserved. The set's a double-length one, and features players who include John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, and James Jackson on Ancient Egyptian Infinity drum – which is always a treat. Ra plays solar organ and moog, as well as piano – and titles include "Of The Other Tomorrow", "On Sound Infinity Spheres", "El Is The Sound Of Joy", "Gods Of The Thunder Realm", "Gods Of A Thunder Realm", "The House Of Eternal Being", and "Lights On a Satellite". Judy RobertsJudy Roberts Band (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Solid/Inner City (Japan), 1979. Used ... $18.99
The important first album by singer Judy Roberts – an excellent jazz talent with a sound that's up there with the best jazz fusion vocalists of the 70s! Judy comes at the end of a decade that scored big recordings for singers like Flora Purim and Urzula Dudziak – and she's easily as great as any of those three, and often sadly lost to time because of the later years in which she recorded, and the Chicago scene in which she made her home! This first self-produced album is a rare groovehound's gem – filled with soaring numbers that feature Roberts on both vocals and keyboards – including electric piano, Arp, clavinet, and other keyboards. Titles include "Fantasy", "Thumbs", "Never Was Love", "Dandelion", "Yes Indeed", and "Watercolors". CD

Solid/Inner City (Japan), 1981. Used ... $18.99
A sweet set of vocal tracks from Judy Roberts – a mix of original tunes and a few covers, all done with a warm fusiony style, and plenty of Brazilian touches! Judy's at the height of her powers here – partly jazzy, partly in a songstress mode that's inspired by the advances that female singers made during the 70s – stretching out in the new freedoms, but never forgetting the lyric, or a need to swing. Includes a great remake of Ivan Lins' "Common Ground", plus the tracks "Two & A Half", "Country Samba", "Save That Time", "Nights In Brazil", "I Can't Help It", and "Starlight Haunted Ballroom". CD

✨✧ Ted CursonJubilant Power ... CD
Inner City, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard driving work by Ted Curson! Jubilant Power is a pretty apt title for the set – played with a celebratory fire – combining the freer loft-style playing of his late 70s American work, with some of the tighter grooving rhythmic approaches of his early 70s sides in France. Chris Woods, a frequent partner from the Paris years, is in the group on alto and flute, cutting lines that match Curson's as well recallung the tenor of Bill Barron during the 60s. Other players include Andy Laverne and Jim McNeely on piano, Nick Brignola on alto sax and flute, Bob Merigliano on drums and Sam Jacobs on conga. Excellent stuff! Titles include "Marjo", "Song Of The Lonely", "Reava's Waltz", "Airi's Tune", "Searchin For The Blues" and "Ted's Tempo". CD

✨✧ Terumasa HinoMay Dance ... CD
Inner City, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly open-ended set from trumpeter Terumasa Hino – a set that's a really great balance between his freer sounds of the early 70s, and some of the warmer fusion modes he hit towards the end of the decade! Hino's working here with a trio of American players – John Scofield on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – an especially tight rhythm section that really helps the record find its groove in the absence of any piano or keyboards. Some of the best tracks have a chunky feel to them – one that's almost funky, but a bit looser overall– and Hino's trumpet is well-blown, with a mix of bold notes and softer soulful elements. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Wind Blows Your Skin", "The Wild Lady", "Big Celebration", and "Free Land". CD

✨✧ Johnny HolidaySongs Of Antonio Carlos Jobim ... CD
Inner City, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful set from vocalist Johnny Holiday – recorded in later years, but with a depth that easily matches his classics! The album's got a definite bossa bent – as you'd guess from the title – and Johnny's rich, deep vocals work with the music in ways that are quite similar to Tony Bennett's best bossa-styled recordings of the 60s – surprisingly full of feeling, but with the right sort of careful balance to live up to the best bossa traditions, too! The notes are a bit lacking in detail, but we believe the set was done in collaboration with Sam Most – who plays some great jazzy flute, amidst light rhythms and just a dash of strings. Titles include "Triste", "Wave", "Dindi", "This Happy Madness", "Meditation", and "One Note Samba". CD

✨✧ JJ Johnson & Al CohnJJ Johnson & Al Cohn ... CD
Inner City, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful pairing of these two modern boppers from the 50s – heard here on a set of rare Parisian recordings originally issued under the leadership of Henri Renaud! There's a really wonderful feel to the record – the sharp edges of Cohn and Renaud's original compositions, played with a great degree of soul by the soloists. Renaud plays piano on all tracks – and the first batch feature both Johnson's trombone and Cohn's tenor, alongside Gigi Gryce on baritone and Jerry Hurwitz on trumpet – on titles that include "Wallington Special", "Lisa", "Boo Wah", and "Something For Lili". Two more tracks – "Once In A While" and "The Things We Did Last Summer" – feature Cohn in a quartet with Renaud. And one more title – "If I Had You" – is presented in a ten minute long take, played by a group that features Johnson and Cohn with Renaud, plus Milt Jackson on vibes and Percy Heath on bass. CD

✨✧ Teddi King with Dave McKennaThis Is New – Teddi King Sings Ira Gershwin ... CD
Inner City, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very laidback little album from Teddi King – a set that mostly features Teddi singing with only piano accompaniment from Dave McKenna, and which also features a few solo tracks by Dave as well! Teddi's voice has changed a bit since the 50s – but in a good way, with a bit more human qualities amidst the trademark trills – especially in the company of McKenna's thoughtfully crafted piano lines. The titles are all Gershwin tunes, taken at a very relaxed pace – and tracks include "Soon", "Long Ago & Far Away", "Here's What I'm Here For", "Isn't It A Pity", "My Ship", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "But Not For Me". Sweetly grooving vocals from Judy Roberts – a Chicago homegirl, but one with the warm sunny touches of the California scene of the late 70s! The record's got Judy working with a tight small combo – keyboards, bass, guitar, and percussion – grooving away in a sweet mode that works well with her vocals – almost bossa-inspired at points, but mostly with a soaring, open sort of quality that's almost a cross between some of the hip European singers of the 70s, and the best jazz vocal talents from the Bay Area. The album's got some nice electric remakes of tunes like "Senor Blues", "Round Midnight", and "Last Tango In Paris" – plus the tracks "The Other World", "The River Must Flow", "Rainbow In Your Eyes", and "No Turns". Motema, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
Way way more than you might guess from an album with Motown in the title – and instead, a set that may well be one of the best we've heard from Geri Allen in years! Yes, the tracks are mostly numbers from the classic years of the famous soul label – but the presentation is quite different – mostly solo piano, with Geri stretching out in these fluid, spiritual ways that go far past any familiar melodies, and which really make the songs deeply her own. Plus, the set also features some tremendous guest work from Marcus Belgrave on trumpet on three tracks – stretching out with the kind of righteous, expressive tones that have made us love him from the days of Tribe Records onwards. David McMurray also guests on alto on one track – but the bulk of album is solo piano from Allen, on titles that include "The Smart Set", "Space Odyssey", "Inner City Blues", "Stoned Love", "Itching In My Heart", "Tears Of A Clown", "That Girl", and "Grand River Crossings". ✨✧ Mulgrew MillerKeys To The City ... CD
Landmark, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
The debut album for Mulgrew Miller as a leader – and a rock-solid session that really set the pianist up strongly for the 80s! At a time when other keyboardists where mixing in so many other elements to their music, Miller's work here is a wonderful return to basics – pure pianistic imagination, played with a sense of fire and creativity that brings us back to McCoy Tyner's best work of a decade before – yet always informed by a fresh style that's always Mulgrew's own, one that's always got dark corners and an undercurrent of tension. The trio's wonderful – and features Ira Coleman on bass and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums – and the album features a number of original Miller tunes, including "Song For Darnell", "Saud's Run", "Portrait Of A Mountain", and "Promethean" – plus versions of "Milestones" and "Inner Urge". ✨✧ Marvin GayeWhat's Going On (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Universal (Japan), 1971. Used Gatefold ... $29.99
One of the few cases in the history of pop music where the record is worth all the hype! Marvin blew everyone's mind when he unleashed this amazing suite of political soul tunes – not only just because he'd moved past the simple love songs of earlier years, but also because he was working with an amazingly complicated approach to soul music, one that would touch the work of others for years to come. David Van DePitte arranged and conducted the whole album – with soaring orchestrations mixed with smooth modern soul, in a style that reminds us a lot of the work of Charles Stepney at Cadet, who'd been doing this sort of thing for years but with less success. In the hands of Marvin Gaye, though, the material has an amazing quality – and all the disparate elements of the album are fused together in one powerful message by Marvin's incredible voice. One that we never tire of, and a record to be listened to all the way through every time. Titles include "What's Goin On", "Save The Children", "Flyin High (In The Friendly Sky)", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". CD also features the b-side bonus tracks "God Is Love", done in an alternate take, and "Sad Tomorrows"! CD

✨✧ John HulburtOpus III ... CD
Clarence/Tompkins Square, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful solo set from John Hulburt – a little-known Chicago guitarist in the early 70s, and almost our city's answer to the beauty of John Fahey at his best! Hulburt's music is a bit more straightforward, and his tunes a little shorter – but the overall sense of conception is equally imaginative – and we love the way he can spin out these wonderful lines on acoustic guitar, seeming to wrap together a hundred years' worth of musical history, but coming across with a very fresh, personal vision throughout! John's way more than a folk artist, and also isn't one of the precursors of the new acoustic movement to come – and instead, he's got this sound that's incredibly moving and powerful, but in very subtle ways. Titles include "Libby", "Inner Garden", "Evil Olive Waltz", "Guitar On My Knees", "Inside & Otherwise", "All Night Waitress", "Freak On The Black Harley", and "Clark Street". CD

Amazing sounds from the legendary Rodriguez – the brilliant 70s singer who had a groove that was equal parts soul, funk, rock, and folk – and an overall approach that was pretty darn unique! Most numbers here have some acoustic guitar over slightly funky rhythms – perfectly scored to work with Rodriguez's raspy soul vocals, which have an undeniably heartfelt style – somewhere in a space between Terry Callier and early Jose Feliciano, but very much its own mode too! This CD features great gems from Rodriguez's years at Sussex Records – including three tracks not on the albums – "Can't Get Away", "Street Boy", and "I'll Slip Away" – plus other titles that include "Sugar Man", "Cause", "I Wonder", "Like Janis", "Jane S Piddy", "I Think Of You", "Inner City Blues", and "Sandrevan Lullaby Lifestyles". ✨✧ Johnny CashMan In Black Vol 1 – 1954-58 (5CD set) ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Don't even think about the other collections of Johnny Cash's Sun recordings – this is the motherlode, and features just about every single note that he recorded for the legendary label! The mantra of the set is "the singer is more important than the song", and it's certainly true in the case of Johnny. He broke all kinds of barriers between country and early rock music with his sparse, raw and economical productions highlighting the amazingly great rough hewn song style he perfected. The set includes 138 tracks total, including lots of alternate versions, even a bonus disc of an entire unedited recording session. It also includes a huge book with a meticulously researched biography, recording notes, a great wealth of publicity shots, and even childhood photos! Everything's here folks, and sequenced chronologically according to recording dates – "Wide Open Road", "You're My Baby", "My Treasure", "Hey Porter", "I Walk The Line", "Folson Prison Blues", "Don't Make Me Go", "Next In Line", "Big River", "Ballad Of A Teenage Queen", "Cry, Cry, Cry", "The Ways Of A Woman In Love", "Story Of A Broken Heart" – what, you're still reading? ✨✧ Darrell BanksDarrell Banks Is Here! ... CD
Atco/Sepia Tone, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing – simply amazing – and one of the best full albums of 60s soul you could ever hope to buy! Darrell Banks was one of the many lost talents laboring in Detroit during the 60s – and he was part of the city's hip underground soul scene that included monster talents like Steve Mancha and JJ Barnes, all of whom fall into the "should have been famous" category, but who have fortunately been honored for years by soul fans worldwide. This album's one of two that Banks ever issued under his own name – and it's a collection of singles that were put together by Revilot, but issued in full LP format by Atlantic. Banks mixes together raw deep soul vocals with some hipper uptown production – and the result is soul that's about as classic as "classic" could be! Every single cut's a winner, written by some of the finest talents in soul music at the time – and tracks include "Here Come The Tears", "Our Love (Is In The Pocket)", "I'm Gonna Hang My Head & Cry", "Baby What'cha Got For Me", and Banks' semi-hit, "Open The Door To Your Heart".
