✨✧ Pepper Adams10 to 4 At The 5 Spot ... LP
Riverside, 1958. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from saxophonist Pepper Adams – quite possibly one of his most hard-blowing sets on record! The album's a live date, recorded at the legendary Five Spot – and the group here is a swinging one with plenty of soul jazz touches – a combo that includes a young Bobby Timmons on piano, plus Donald Byrd on trumpet, Doug Watkins on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all playing together at the height of their youthful powers! But even amidst all those heavyweights, Pepper Adams is clearly the star of the set – playing with a tone that's unbelievable – almost more tenor-like than a baritone sax, and filled with feeling throughout, even on the mellower moments. Donald Byrd sits out on one track, leaving Adams to dominate the ballad "You're My Thrill" – but he returns to the fold in tight formation on versions of "Hastings Street Bounce", "Yourna", "Tis", and "The Long Two/Four". ✨✧ Miles DavisFacets No 1 ... LP
CBS, 1956/1958/1962. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Import collection of some more obscure Miles moments from the late 50s Columbia years! There's 4 tracks recorded with the orchestra of Michel Legrand – and players that include Coltrane, Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, and Bill Evans: "Jitterbug Waltz", "Round Midnight", "Wild Man Blues", and "Django". 2 tracks from a recording by the Brass Ensemble Of The Jazz & Classical Music Society, one led by John Lewis, the other by Gunther Schuller, are surprisingly wonderful – very much in the mode of Miles' work with Gil Evans, with a similar glistening sound on Miles' trumpet, and warm chromatic washes of sound underneath to provide the perfect soloing vehicle. And there are 4 numbers, a pair each from the Coltrane/Garland incarnation of the quintet, "Sweet Sue" & "Budo", and a transitional sextet from 1962, "Devil May Care" & "Blue Xmas". One of our favorite tunes from the old school – a beautiful blend of vocoder vocals, sinister keyboards, and some cool splashy beats! This one ties it all together – the sound of the streets, the experiments of the import scene, and the changing energy in the clubs – all with a perfect blend of moods, and that wicked "D-d-d-d-d-d-ominatrix" chant! This massive package really pushes past the original single – to offer up unreleased tracks "Play It Safe" and "The City That Never Sleeps" – plus all the original "Dominatrix" mixes, and a bonus 32 page booklet with lots of liner notes, reivews, interviews, and rare material from the band – even photos by Richard Kern! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Lou DonaldsonBlues Walk (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best of Lou's earlier Blue Note albums – a hard-wailing soul jazz set with some very hip conga in the mix! The group's a really solid one – Lou's famous early quartet – and Herman Foster plays piano, Peck Morrison's on bass, and Dave Bailey's on drums. A young Ray Barretto plays conga on the set, and rounds things out nicely – not really with a Latin finish, but kind of a rolling groove that works to create more of a lightly dancing feel in the rhythm section. The whole thing's perfectly put together – and tracks include "Play Ray", "Callin' All Cats", and "Blues Walk". CD

80s reissue of one of the few US major label issues of work by Fela – the 1977 Mercury Zombie album, a record that's titled after the import Zombie LP, but which has a different set of tracks. The record does include the 12 and a half minute reading of "Zombie" that was on the original LP – but then it's also got "Monkey Banana" and "Everything Scatter". Still nice and groovy, though, and everything's up there with Fela's best material! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Red GarlandGroovy ... LP
Prestige, 1956. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Long tracks and plenty of room to move around – a perfect setting for the classic sound of the Red Garland Trio on Prestige! Despite the title, the album's not so much groovy as it is lyrically beautiful and filled with sensitivity – a key bridge between piano players of the mainstream in the years before Garland, and some of the bigger, bolder names that would rise up during the 60s soul jazz years. Rhythm is by Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and the longer tracks give Chambers plenty of room to express his unique talents on the bass. Titles include "Gone Again", "Hey Now", "Will You Still Be Mine", "What Can I Say Dear", and "C-Jam Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Wardell GrayWardell Gray Memorial Vol 1 ... LP
Prestige, Early 50s. Sealed ... $19.99
One of the best-ever documents of the young genius of tenorist Wardell Gray – exactly the kind of music that shows why he was one of the biggest and best of the bop saxophonists – before he was taken away from us all too soon! The material here was originally issued on 78s or 45s, and comes together as a great full length representation of Gray at his best – and on this first volume, Wardell plays tenor in one group with Al Haig on piano and Roy Haynes on drums – on titles that include "Easy Living", "Twisted", and "Southside". Another combo features Phil Hill on piano – on "Treadin", "Grayhound", and "Blue Gray". And the last combo is Teddy Charles' West Coasters – with Charles on vibes, Frank Morgan on alto, and Sonny Clark on piano – the last two of whom make their debut on the record! Heaven 17Luxury Gap ... LP
BEF/Virgin (UK), 1983. Very Good ... $1.99
Heaven 17 soften up their politics a bit with this second album (yet still address class inequality issues with the title!) – but they also manage to replace their Marxist agenda with some groovier, more soul-based tunes – just the kind of material that helped push them out of import obscurity into more of a crossover market in the US! The album's fondly remembered for the electro dancefloor numbers "Temptation", "Come Live With Me", and "Let Me Go" – all of which stand a cut above the work of their predecessors Human League, and show an ability to go past simple electronic pop riffs – even if they are all pretty darn catchy! Other tracks are great too – and the record has a joyous, optimistic quality that's every bit the best side of this scene from the early 80s generation. Titles include "We Live So Fast", "Best Kept Secret", "Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry", and "Key To The World". LP, Vinyl record album

A wicked blend of jazz and soul from Hiroshima – a group who've got the smooth blend of styles we love in some of the import-only fusion dates that were coming from Japan in the late 70s! The group's got a few light touches that emphasize their Pacific roots – including light flute lines and touches of koto and shamisen, but often used in more subtle ways than on earlier Japanese albums that mixed these rootsy elements with jazz – and the overall vibe here is one that's got plenty of appeal to fans of crossover fusion from the time, especially the kind with a strong current of soul! There's a bit of vocals on the record, too – and titles include "Winds Of Change", "Odori", "Echoes", "Cruisin J-Town", "Fortune Teller", and "Shinto". LP, Vinyl record album

Michel LegrandLes Parapluies De Cherbourg (Umbrellas Of Cherbourg) (complete version) ... CD
Sony (France), 1965. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
One of the most wonderful soundtracks ever! Michel Legrand wrote the jazzy groovy score for this legendary French film from the mid 60s – and every word of dialogue in the film is sung throughout, making for a very cool, ever-changing array of vocal bits and jazzy styles. Embedded in here are lines that later became worldwide hits – like "I Will Wait For You" and "Watch What Happens" – but in this version, the songs are just themes in the huge pastiche of dialogue and narrative, and they lurk behind the score in a beautiful way. This is one of our favorite all-time soundtracks, and this wonderful import version features the entire thing, end to end, on 2CDs – as well as 6 bonus tracks that feature other versions of the themes and songs, done instrumentally or vocally by other artists. Monday MichiruRecollections (Remixes & Covers) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 2001. New Copy ... $9.99
A collection of hard-to-find work by Monday Michiru – featuring mixes and covers that have been issued as singles in the past, and which fit together surprisingly well as a full LP! If you know Monday's work, you know that her singles often feature versions of tracks that are quite different than the LP versions – recrafted with the help of some of the best NuSoul producers and remixers, like Joe Claussell, Masters At Work, Shinchi Osaway, and Bluey, all of whom contribute work to this set. The package is great – and with a total of 11 tracks in all, it will save you a lot of time (and money) tracking down those expensive import 12" singles! The set's mixed together – but not strongly, so that all the songs are very much intact – and titles include "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "Lovin You (acoustic live version)", "Double Image (live at Manic One rmx)", "Chasing After The Sun (Banda Black Lero mix)", "Yellow Bird (Incognito Capoeira mix)", "Tomorrow's Sunrise (Murphy meets Titomaxx)", "Love Flow (Mango margarita mix)", "Mysteries Of Life (Ananda Project Black Tail dub)", and "Higher (higher dub)". A legendary performance by Sun Ra & The Arkestra – and for good reason, too! The album was initially issued on a hard-to-find French import, but has cropped up in other formats over the years – and it's a stellar live date that really illustrates the group at their soulful best! Ra definitely goes past the usual here – and focuses the energy of the ensemble in a way that makes the whole extended performance very captivating throughout – especially in the way the group can get totally free at some spots, and perform with subtle, soulful tones at others. The lineup includes Marshall Allen on alto and flute, John Gilmore on tenor, Pat Patrick on baritone and bass clarinet, Danny Davis on alto and flute, James Jacson on clarinet and flute, Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Danny Thompson on baritone and bassoon, Alan Silva on bass, Rashied Salim on vibes, and vocals by June Tyson, Gloristeena Knight, and Verta Grosvenor. Ra himself plays moog, piano, organ, electric piano, and "intergalactic instruments"! Volume one includes an excellent long track called "The Cosmic Explorer", which has Ra going crazy on the moog, plus the shorter tracks "Star Gazers", "Shadow World", and "Enlightenment". A well-titled set from drummer Art Taylor – given that he's got some very heavy-duty horn power on the session, all of whom are heavy-duty wailers! Most of the record features a lineup with Charlie Rouse on tenor, Jackie McLean on alto, and Donald Byrd on trumpet – all taking off beautifully from some simple, rhythmic modes laid down by Taylor on drums, Ray Bryant on piano, and Wendell Marshall on bass. Let's Dance/Still Music, Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A cool collection from the earliest years of the Chicago house music scene – a time when the city's grooves were maybe as beholden to the styles from overseas as they were the new vibe going on in the Windy City! Lots of these tracks have heavier beats than basslines, and almost reflect some of the ways that New York street soul was using drum machines in the years after hip hop got going – but there's also an approach that shows that strong Chicago love of import dance records from the UK, Italy, and beyond – with modes that were borrowed strongly, then reshaped to make the more familiar grooves that influenced generations to come. As with other Still Music projects, the package is as much a history lesson as a music compilation – a great look into a tiny little label, with detailed notes, and tracks that include "Jump Trax Mix Down" by Duane Thamm Jr, "Single Girl (voc)" by Knight Action with Sedenia, "R-Trax (special mix)" by Knight Action, "Crazy Or Not (inst)" by Mike Tomaselli, "Nobody (club mix)" by Joey O & Out Of Control, "I Like That In You (dub)" by Belinda Hoover, "Crazy Or Not (virgin)" by Mike Tomaselli, "R-Trax/D-Rail (single dance mix)" by Knight Action featuring Sedenia, and "Jump Trax Mix Up" by Duane Thamm Jr. CD

The first-ever collection of work from a label we know mostly for its great funky 45s – London's Wah Wah records, home to some great modern tracks with an older funk flavor! Unlike Daptone or other current funk labels, Wah Wah isn't after a straight retro funk sound – and often features tracks that mix together samples, beats, and acoustic instrumentation – very much in the style of some of the best funk on the Tru Thoughts label. A few Tru Thoughts artists make appearances here, and the set bring together 15 import singles in one package – some previously unreleased, and some on CD for the first time! Titles include "Don't You Worry" by Unforscene with Alice Russell, "Alive" and "Like Rain" by Allison Crockett, "Ay Calor" by Max Cole, "Magnetica" by Espen Horne, "Wonderlust" by Aaron Jerome, "Grasshopper (Nostalgia 77 rmx)" by Easylifenatural with Erik Sumo, "Make It So" by Jamie Finlay, "Burning Orange" by Rosie Brown, "Take It Back" by 12th Floor, and "Bird Mess" by Belleruche. Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". Paolo Achenza 4Branches ... CD
A.MA (Italy), 2017. Used ... $9.99
It's been many years since we last heard from Paolo Achenza – the Italian keyboardist who was one of the first to bring the Fender Rhodes back in the early 90s – and an important early force on the Italian label Schema Records! It's been nearly 20 years since Paolo's last for Schema – but in that time, he's clearly grown a lot as an artist – and although still very much in a funky jazz vein, also opens his ears to a wider range of influences – as you'll hear in this really well-crafted set! Achenza's Rhodes is certainly in the lead, but the record also has contributions from many others too – including singers Richard Sinclair and Nicaleo – who each work on a track – as well as Vito Scavo on trombone, Donny Balice on trumpet, Alberto Parmegiani on guitar, and Franceso Walsh on sitar – artists who each add in different shadings to Paolo's core quartet of bass, drums, and percussion. Achenza was one of the first to really take the Italian electric sound of the 70s forward – and all these many years later, he's still one of the best. Titles include "Solar Whip", "Branches", "Achenzology", "In The Name Of What", "Kinky Habits", "One For Little P", and "Settimo Continente". CD

Seminal work by one of the first big figures in country music – the great Roy Acuff, whose early material was the second force putting the sound on the map after the work of Jimmie Rodgers! Roy was one of the greatest stars of the early years – a hell of a singer, an important composer, and a tireless performer who criss-crossed the south constantly – helping the music to spread and grow, and sparking countless careers along the way! This package is the first to really do justice to these important early years of Acuff – much more so than any of the public domain packages on the market – as the whole thing's handled with the Bear Family sense of completeness – which means that the 9CD box features a whopping 226 songs, recorded for the Vocalion, Arc, and Columbia labels between 1936 and 1951 – all packaged with a massive 184 page hardcover book, filled with new biography information, session notes, an a newly-done discography – plus a fantastic amount of rare photos and illustrations. Johnny AdamsI Won't Cry – The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The best work ever from the great Johnny Adams – a Crescent City soul singer with a hell of a lot of power, brought into wonderfully strong focus here on these early recordings for the Ric & Ron label! Johnny recorded later in Nashville and Jackson, but he's never sounded better than on these early sides – which have a depth of feeling and timeless power that we'd rank right up there with some of the most important names during the early years of soul. The material is nicely free of overdone New Orleans styles – and instead has this care and class that really reaches out from the roots of the material, to showcase Johnny as a singer with a great deal of care and class, but one who's still able to let loose in the best deep soul modes too. Adams hardly ever got the chart coverage he should have deserved – but this 24 track set will more than support his strong legacy – with detailed notes, and a stunning array of tracks that include "Closer To You", "Teach Me To Forget", "Who You Are", "Showdown", "A Losing Battle", "Life Is Just A Struggle", "Cold Cold Heart", "Coming Around The Mountain", and "Nowhere To Go". The tracks are long, but never rambling – jamming, but never in a noodly way – and these guys really show why their contribution to German prog was so important at the time – able to handle some of the minimal progressions of their contemporaries, while finding a way to soar forward too – yet always with a sound that's completely fresh and free of cliche! Keyboards and guitar spiral out wonderfully together, and looped a bit in some really great ways – and titles include "Soundpool", "Laila II", and "Looping IV". LP, Vinyl record album

Mighty nice work from a really inventive duo – the team of Ryan Oslance on drums and Shane Parish on guitar – both musicians who work with a criss-crossing sound that's part jazz, flavored maybe partly by rock – in a blend that really continues the legacy of some important Chicago sounds of the final years of the 20th Century! There's a wide array of textures from the guitar – sometimes more pronounced leads, sometimes subtle sonic energy, and sometimes rhythmic blasts that really echo the work on drums – which also has a way of stepping between conventional and more unusual modes, as both musicians progress in styles that often have a relatively rhythmic core. Titles include "Power With", "Erosion", "Sundowning", "Rincon Pio Sound", "La Faena", and "Shelter In Place" – a tune that maybe resonates more differently now than when it was recorded! CD

A fantastic rare performance from drummer Rashied Ali – a musician who's best known for his work with John Coltrane during his later years, but who steps out here beautifully as a leader on his own! Ali's tremendous here – effortlessly non-stop on the drums – a player who seems unable to rest even for a minute – with that sense of boundless imagination that really helped set Coltrane free on their recordings together – fused here with contributions from a very unusual quintet that includes Ramon Morris on tenor, Dewey Johnson on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, and Reggie Johnson on bass! The energy is maybe a rawer step to the side of the ESP generation, and definitely points the way towards the loft jazz scene that Rashied would help form and be such an important part of in the 70s – on titles that include "Study For As Salaam Alikum", "Composition 1", "Ballade", and "Composition 2". Curtis AmyCurtis Amy – Mosaic Select (Blues Message/Meetin Here/Groovin Blue/Way Down/Tippin On Through/Katanga!) ... CD
Mosaic/Blue Note, Early 60s. Used 3CD ... $64.99
An amazing transformation in jazz – the first 6 albums by Texas tenor giant Curtis Amy, packaged together in one box set! Amy had a deep gutsy sound that was similar to other Texas tenors coming out of the state during the postwar years – and initially, his first recordings in LA were done in a spirited soul jazz mode – often teaming with organist Paul Bryant, in loose and free albums that had the feel of some of the east coast sides cut for Prestige at the time. As the early 60s wore on, though, Amy really opened up – and started working with some of the hipper younger players of the LA scene, to shift his groove from straight soul jazz into more of a modally-inspired sound. The 6 albums on this set document this incredible transformation – already tremendous at the start, but even more revolutionary as Amy moved onto work with players that included Carmell Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Frank Strazzeri, Jimmy Bond, Jack Wilson, and Roy Ayers. Amy's never gotten his due on the reissue market before, and although one of these albums has seen the light of day on CD, most of the other material is showing up here for the first time on reissue – making the limited numbered set even more important than most of the other Mosaic sets! Tremendous work all the way through – and a release that's bound to finally get Amy the attention he deserves. 36 tracks in all – with a great set of notes! CD

An amazing recording finally sees the light of day – a beautiful set of duets between Fred Anderson on tenor and Steve McCall on percussion – both very important players of the second wave of AACM musicians in the 70s, even though both artists never fully got their due! The material was recorded in 1980, not too long before we lost McCall – and the interplay is wonderful, and really represents a shift in the energy of the AACM scene – maybe some influence from the loft jazz world of mid 70s New York, which in turn drew inspiration from late 60s Chicago – but also delivered with a sense of soul that marks Anderson as part of a key lineage of Chicago tenorists that includes Clifford Jordan, Johnny Griffin, and John Gilmore! Cadet, 1970. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A damn legendary record from the last years of Chess Records – and for good reason, too! Archie Whitewater were a group that was years ahead of its time – a rock combo, but one with real genre-crossing sensibilities that made them perfect for the experimental styles at the Cadet/Concept side of Chess – the same slice of the musical universe that gave us Rotary Connection and important productions from Charles Stepney! The sound here has some surprisingly soulful elements at times – especially the instrumentation, which features some great break moments that get nice and funky, and strands of soulful jazz and blues that really make the music way different than most other groups we can think of – or maybe a bit like a rare elite who shared such visionary territory with Archie Whitewater, such as Shades Of Joy on their first Fontana record. The keyboards and sax lines are as great as the drums – and the vocals have a melancholy undercurrent that's a really refreshing change from some of the overly-postured modes you'd get from other groups in 1970. Titles include the sublime sample cut "Cross Country" – but there's loads of other nice ones with the same stripped-down "Dusty Fingers" sort of groove – and other titles include "Life Is A River", "Home Again", "Lament For The Walking Dead", "Seacoast", "Country To the City", "Friends & Neighbors", and "Mist Of The Early Morning". An important pre-Art Ensemble Of Chicago moment – one that has most of the group coming together in a pair of rare recordings in the home of Lester Bowie – already sounding amazingly creative as a unit! The sound is almost freer than later work by the group – or certainly at the fierceness they hit right at the start of the 70s – and the lineup here includes both Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman on a range of reed instruments, Lester Bowie on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Malachi Favors on bass – plus strong input from Thurman Barker on drums, and an appearance on one track from Curtis Clark on bass! The sound is wonderfully raw, and surprisingly clear for a home recording – and the power of the music is undeniable. Both tracks – "A To Ericka" and "Quintet" – were previously part of the Art Ensemble box set on Nessa – but that's been out of print for years, and together these compositions work wonderfully as a full album! Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

A pair of classic Albert Ayler albums from 1964 – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirits – only the second album ever recorded by Albert Ayler, but a tremendous statement of music that clearly marks the tenorist as one of the most important jazz talents of the 60s! The set was recorded in New York, and only ever got initial exposure overseas – but has grown to become one of the best-remember Ayler albums over the years – thanks in part to a rock-solid lineup of equal visionaries in the group, a lineup that include Sunny Murray on drums, Norman Howard on trumpet, and both Henry Grimes and Earl Henderson on bass – playing together on the title track, which gives the whole thing a really tremendous power. Ayler's clearly the spotlight, though – shining his light with brilliance both in his phrasing of the tenor, and his sense of timing and inherent rhythm – which opens the door to whole new pathways in jazz. Titles include "Spirits", "Prophecy", "Holy Holy", and "Witches & Devils". Next is Ghosts – a seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less powerful – with Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – working through tremendous readings of six Ayler classics that include "Ghosts", "Children", "Holy Spirit", "Vibrations" and "Mothers". A wonderful precursor to the ESP years – and equally great! CD

Landmark recordings from Cuban singer Abelardo Barroso – one of the most expressive voices on the Havana scene – both before and after the revolution! Barroso is heard here in he company of Orquesta Sensacion – a great group with a very rhythmic vibe, and a style that's often in the best charanga mode of the period – especially that sharper style that bubbled big in Cuba before hitting the mainstream up north. Instrumentation is tight and light – very focused rhythms, piano, flute, and violin – and Abelardo's lead vocals get lots of room for these soulful, colorful inflections that really illuminate the tunes – with a range of feeling that even exceeds some of his important contemporaries. Equally great is the package – which has notes and a wonderful vintage look – overall way nicer than some of the cheaper collections of Cuban sounds on the market. Sound quality is great – and titles include "El Panquelero", "El Huerfanito", "Triste Lucha", "Bruca Manigua", "El Manisero", "La Mulata Rumbera", "Yo Ta Cansa", and "Tiene Sabor". CD

A nicely expanded version of this important look at the career and music of Aretha Franklin – one that was first published at the end of the 80s, but which has been refined over the years to follow her changing career – and updated in this final edition, which covers the last decade of Aretha's time on this planet! Mark Bego doesn't pull any punches in his examination of Franklin – and while he clearly loves Aretha's music, he also gets at all the challenges she faced over the years – including some of the behind the scenes drama that impacted her music. The book is 430 pages, softcover, with a full color photo section in the middle, and a discography at the end. Book

Peter BenjaminsonMary Wells – The Tumultuous Life Of Motown's First Superstar (hardcover) ... Book
Chicago Review Press, 2012. New Copy ... $4.99 29.95
A stunning look at the great Mary Wells – one of Motown's first female acts of the 60s, and one of the decade's most important early soul figures as well! Mary's work on record is very well-known, but the story behind the music is completely different, and surprisingly dark at times – a tale of a talented artist often caught between larger corporate forces, and personal antagonists as well – not to mention her own personal demons. Peter Benjaminson does a great job of getting at all these details without being overly sensational – and he works in lots of wonderful personal recollections from friends and colleagues who really help illuminate the more private moments. The book is over 300 pages, hardcover, with some black and white photos. Book

A diverse set of tripped out, funky, jazzy and spare beatcraft from French DJ collective and DMC champs Birdy Nam Nam – sometimes separate but equal in the aforementioned characteristics, sometimes all mixed up within the length of a track – a blend of beats, scratches, synths and live instruments the mixes in deft fashion! An important Blue Note set from the end of the 90s – a record that marked a bit of a shift in the label's approach, and really set the scene for a more open ear to new sounds to come! Brian Blade's a drummer, but the set is definitely the work of a warm fellowship in jazz – a well-matched group of players that includes Myron Walden on alto, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano, John Cowherd on acoustic piano and Wurlitzer, and Christopher Thomas on bass – all working through mostly original material by Blade that has this slow burn and soulful sparkle – often mellow, but without every being too laidback – and produced by Daniel Lanois with a really great overall sense of sound. ✨✧ Art BlakeyMoanin' (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove! (And in fact, as a tribute to the group's success, the album was initially named Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but quickly retitled Moanin in this version, after the big hit single!) ✨✧ Art BlakeyMosaic (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". CD

Sony/Real Gone, Late 50s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice collection of overlooked work from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – not the oft-reissued material from the group's years at Blue Note, but instead some slightly more obscure sides recorded for Columbia and RCA! The work here also represents a time when Blakey was experimenting a bit more with the group – a stretch right before he settled into some of the more-recorded groups with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons – but still had a great ear for important younger talent! Players here include Bill Hardman, Donald Byrd, and Lee Morgan on trumpets; Jackie McLean on alto; Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, and Benny Golson on tenor; and Horace Silver and Sam Dockery on piano! The set includes material from the albums Hard Bop, Drum Suite, Jazz Messengers, Night In Tunisia, and some of the French-only live recordings that Blakey did for RCA in the late 50s – and the set features 16 tracks that include "Nica's Dream", "Evidence", "Blues March For Europe No 1", "Along Came Manon", "Lester Left Town", "Night In Tunisia (live)", "Moanin With Hazel", "Night In Tunisia (take 3)", "Ecaroh", "Cubano Chant", "Almost Like Being In Love", "The Sacrifie", and "Couldn't It Be You (take 4)". The landmark debut of Mary J Blige – a record that not only did a great job of blending underground hip hop and mainstream soul sensibilities – but maybe also opened the door for the Neo Soul revolution to come! Mary comes on here with a fresh new vision in female soul – one that's informed by the youth and upfront energy of the hip hop female MCs that preceded her – but with a depth that also makes Blige sort of the new Aretha Franklin for the end of the century – a deep soul singer, but one who's equally at home in the streets and the studio. Important production is by a young Sean Combs – some of his first great work on record – and the set also features guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Little Shawn, Grand Puba, Erick Sermon, and CL Smooth. Titles include "Real Love", "Sweet Thing", "Love No Limit", "You Remind Me", "Reminisce", "What's The 411", "I Don't Want To Do Anything", "Changes I've Been Going Through", "Slow Down", and "My Love". Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Maybe the most overstuffed collection of work we've ever seen from early New Orleans soul legend Eddie Bo – a set that not only includes his early classics for the Ric label, but also more obscure material for Apollo, Chess, Ace, and Swan – all brought together here with a number of unissued tracks from the time! If you don't know Eddie, you're in for a treat – as the singer first began in a more familiar New Orleans R&B mode, but already had a gritty style that helped him first pave the way towards Crescent City soul, then some even more important funk territory as the 60s moved on! This set focuses on six key years in Bo's early career – clearly a very fruitful time, as the package features 43 tracks in all – titles that include "Baby", "I'm Wise", "Happy Tears", "I'll Be Satisfied", "Walk That Walk", "Oh Oh", "My Dearest Darling", "I Love To Rock & Roll", "So Glad", "I'm So Tired", "Hey There Baby", "I Need Someone", "Tell It Like It Is", "Every Dog Got His Day", "Roamin-titis", "Now Let's Pop Eye", "Hep Hep Hooray", "I Cry On", and lots lots more! One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is a landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance by KRS-One. Importance aside, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Fantastic work from Lo Borges – the legendary Brazilian singer that we've loved since his first "corner club" work with Milton Nascimento in the 70s – and who looks as if he hasn't aged a bit in the photo included with the album! Borges was always one of the strongest Brazilian songwriters of his generation – and a sophisticated, subtle singer whose approach was always just right for his words – an approach that hasn't changed a bit, as Lo works here with older musical partner Nelson Angelo, whose help was so important on his first self-titled album from 1972! Backing is by a small group, nicely under-produced – and all songs are originals by Borges and Angelo, with titles that include "Rio Da Lua", "Profeta, "No Caminho", "Em Outras Cancoes", "Foto 3 x 4", "Antes Do Tempo", and "Partimos". Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Big Crown, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A funky trio with a really unique sort of vibe – vocals that are somewhere in the sweet soul territory of the early 70s, set to spacious instrumentation that's got some nicely trippy touches! The core lineup features guitar, bass, and drums next to the harmonized vocals of Kevin and Tony Martin – but Leon "El" Michels produced the set, and also adds in a bit of keyboards – and the whole record really benefits from the open-ended sound he can bring to an affair of this nature! Things are never overdone, and these guys never try to sound too forcedly soulful – really finding the best qualities in their vocals, and reminding us that sometimes the right fit is the most important thing of all. Titles include "Beautyful Beauti", "Mnemophobia", "Sorry", "Reclaim", "Dead End", and "Breathe". LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1986. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Dee Dee Bridgewater's greatest jazz albums, and a very important record in her career – as it marked a shift back to straight jazz vocals, after years of working in a more R&B inflected mode. The album's recorded in Paris, where Dee Dee's spent an awful lot of time over the years, and you can feel that familiarity in the way she presents the material – easily slipping back into a jazz vocal mode, working before an appreciative audience without any thoughts of crossover popularity, hitting that proud, strong, and free style that's been carrying her well for a number of years now. Includes a great version of "All Blues", plus the tracks "On A Clear Day", "Here's That Rainy Day", "There Is No Greater Love", and "Misty". LP, Vinyl record album

JG/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very rare, very obscure material from this important free jazz trio of the German scene in the 70s – a set that features one long performance originally issued on the JG label, despite the FMP-like image on the cover – plus two more tracks from the same year that appear here for the first time ever! "Just For Altena" offers up the power trio at their best – very freewheeling piano from Fred Van Hove, drums from Han Bennink, and tenor from Peter Brotzmann – with intensity that may well surpass the Machine Gun years, and an understanding of each players strengths that means that there's almost no tentative moments at all in the improvisation! "Filet Americain" and "ICP No 17" are from earlier in 1971 – and showcase a different, more sonic side of the trio – some tones that are at the farther end of hearing, which ruminate then blossom into bolder statements, but still often with a very abstracted approach to each instrument. Great stuff – and every bit as essential as any of the better-known Brotzman recordings of the time! CD

Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

The genius of Terry Callier – remixed! One of the greatest things to happen to Chicago soul legend Callier in recent years was his discovery by a host of cutting edge producers and DJs on the European scene – important talents who took his work to a whole new audience, by fusing Terry's original grooves with some more ambitious rhythmic progressions, keyboard lines, and other studio touches. And while you might fear that such knob-twiddling would muddy the waters and dampen Callier's spirit, such was not the case – as work in this vein only seemed to inspire Terry further, to stretch out his wings and reach new musical horizons. The tracks on this set offer a number of recent Callier recordings, remixed by the cream of the current UK and European scene – all as proof of how great this format is when applied to Callier's work. "Cubis" features a sublime trio with Marion Brown on alto, Peter Kowald on bass, and John Stevens on drums – and that rhythm duo also supports "Jepa", which features Mangelsdorff on trombone and Evan Parker on soprano sax – and "Relationship", which also features Parker – as well as Don Cherry on trumpet and Buschi Niebergall on second bass.
