Because/Import (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $20.99
A special 3CD collection – one that brings together the first three volumes of Shaolin Soul – a great series inspired by the inventive approach the Wu-Tang Clan brought to the world of hip hop samples – that great sense of sound that had them going for tunes that had way more to offer than just a funky drum break! ✨✧ ClashClash ... LP
Epic, 1977. Very Good- ... $49.99
One of the most stunning debut albums of the 70s – and a set that burst on the scene with a sound that summed up a generation, but which had never been heard this clearly before! This self-titled Clash album was different from other landmarks of the time – work by the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and others – as the group had a sense of raw power, but also a tunefulness too – a way of pushing their message into territory that others wouldn't have reached – with tunes that were as surprisingly hummable as they were politically correct! There's a bit less Jamaican influence here than in later Clash years, but that quality is still present somewhat – and over the years, this is definitely a set we can return to again and again – with no sense of apology or outdated ideals at all. Nearly every cut's a classic – and titles include "Janie Jones", "Career Opportunities", "Police & Thieves", "Garageland", "Clash City Rockers", "I Fought The Law", "White Riot", "London's Burning", "White Man In Hammersmith Palais", and "I'm So Bored With The USA". ✨✧ Miles DavisFacets No 1 ... LP
CBS, 1956/1958/1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Import collection of some more obscure Miles moments from the late 50s Columbia years! There's 4 tracks recorded with the orchestra of Michel Legrand – and players that include Coltrane, Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, and Bill Evans: "Jitterbug Waltz", "Round Midnight", "Wild Man Blues", and "Django". 2 tracks from a recording by the Brass Ensemble Of The Jazz & Classical Music Society, one led by John Lewis, the other by Gunther Schuller, are surprisingly wonderful – very much in the mode of Miles' work with Gil Evans, with a similar glistening sound on Miles' trumpet, and warm chromatic washes of sound underneath to provide the perfect soloing vehicle. And there are 4 numbers, a pair each from the Coltrane/Garland incarnation of the quintet, "Sweet Sue" & "Budo", and a transitional sextet from 1962, "Devil May Care" & "Blue Xmas". Heaven 17Luxury Gap ... LP
BEF/Virgin (UK), 1983. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Heaven 17 soften up their politics a bit with this second album (yet still address class inequality issues with the title!) – but they also manage to replace their Marxist agenda with some groovier, more soul-based tunes – just the kind of material that helped push them out of import obscurity into more of a crossover market in the US! The album's fondly remembered for the electro dancefloor numbers "Temptation", "Come Live With Me", and "Let Me Go" – all of which stand a cut above the work of their predecessors Human League, and show an ability to go past simple electronic pop riffs – even if they are all pretty darn catchy! Other tracks are great too – and the record has a joyous, optimistic quality that's every bit the best side of this scene from the early 80s generation. Titles include "We Live So Fast", "Best Kept Secret", "Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry", and "Key To The World". LP, Vinyl record album

Island, 1985. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of the great lost moments in the career of Trevor Horn – and the only real full album from Propaganda! The group have an approach that has bits of the Art of Noise love of sound texture, and which also seems to borrow a bit from the German electronics of the early 80s – but fuses the groove into a more straightforward Factory Records-ish sort of sound. A few tunes get a bit hokey at times, but there's also some great numbers here that were key crossovers in the later wave of the 80s import invasion to American club – and which played well in the Chicago house scene. Tracks include "Dream Within A Dream", "Murder Of Love", "Jewel", "Del", "P-Machinery", "Sorry For Laughing", "Dr Mabuse", "Chase", "Last Word/Strength To Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Leo SmithDivine Love ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most widely-circulated albums in the early years of Wadada Leo Smith – an ECM session that not only gave the trumpeter the kind of exposure he wasn't getting with his independent and import albums – but also a record that reminded the world that the label also had a strong commitment to the avant garde! There's a wonderfully lyrical vibe to the record – as Smith spins things out alongside a core trio of Dwight Andrews on tenor, bass clarinet, and alto flute – and the great Bobby Naughton on vibes, marimbas, and bells – musicians who work with Leo in the kind of open, instrument-changing space first inspired by the AACM – but with the inherent sense of poetry that Smith always brought to his own music. The record features guest work from Charlie Haden's bass on one track, and from the trumpets of Kenny Wheeler and Lester Bowie on another – and titles include "Divine Love", "Tastalun", and "Spirituals The Language Of Love". Heads Up, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sublime work from a truly amazing artist – one who both sings and plays acoustic bass – all in a captivating blend of jazz, soul, and Brazilian styles! Esperanza Spalding has a fresh, unique feel that's all her own – the warmth of a jazz singer like Carmen Lundy, the sharper sensitivities of a bossa vocalist, and the depth of a younger soul artist – all wrapped up in grooves that are undeniably jazzy, with a strong sense of rhythm from Spalding's great work on bass! The set is a great one, and provides a perfect platform for Esperanza's wonderful talents – even more so than her previous import release, and at a much nicer price. Instrumentation is mostly small combo – with lots of piano, a bit of Fender Rhodes, and some trumpet and sax from time to time – and titles include "She Got To You", "Precious", "Ponta De Areia", "I Know You Know", "Fall In", "I Adore You", "Love In Time", and "Mela". VariousLet's Dance Records – Mike Macharello & Duane Thamm Jr – Chicago 1983 to 1985 ... CD
Let's Dance/Still Music, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $9.99
A cool collection from the earliest years of the Chicago house music scene – a time when the city's grooves were maybe as beholden to the styles from overseas as they were the new vibe going on in the Windy City! Lots of these tracks have heavier beats than basslines, and almost reflect some of the ways that New York street soul was using drum machines in the years after hip hop got going – but there's also an approach that shows that strong Chicago love of import dance records from the UK, Italy, and beyond – with modes that were borrowed strongly, then reshaped to make the more familiar grooves that influenced generations to come. As with other Still Music projects, the package is as much a history lesson as a music compilation – a great look into a tiny little label, with detailed notes, and tracks that include "Jump Trax Mix Down" by Duane Thamm Jr, "Single Girl (voc)" by Knight Action with Sedenia, "R-Trax (special mix)" by Knight Action, "Crazy Or Not (inst)" by Mike Tomaselli, "Nobody (club mix)" by Joey O & Out Of Control, "I Like That In You (dub)" by Belinda Hoover, "Crazy Or Not (virgin)" by Mike Tomaselli, "R-Trax/D-Rail (single dance mix)" by Knight Action featuring Sedenia, and "Jump Trax Mix Up" by Duane Thamm Jr. CD

✨✧ Kaoru AbeSolo Live At Gaya Vol 7 ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A series of amazing recordings from one of Japan's most important avant jazz musicians of the 70s – reedman Kaoru Abe, who was able to go head to head with some of the most inventive, creative free jazz artists of the European scene – but all with a style that's uniquely his own! In a Japanese scene that was later dominated by waves of sound and bombastic energy, Abe has a very marked sense of space – a love of the room between the notes, the time between the moments of sound – which always mark his solo work as extremely thoughtful, and give it an organic quality that we'd put right up there with only a rare few – like Evan Parker or Steve Lacy at their best. And while other Abe records are really wonderful, there's a very special quality to this series – which features unfettered solo material that just keeps on being amazing – no sense of repetition or overdone-ness at all. This 7th volume features a long improvsation on alto sax, and another on sopranino – both recorded on June 16, 1978. CD

Aaron Abernathy, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Aaron Abernathy really grabbed us with his debut – and on this second set, he's maybe even tighter and more his own self than before – moving past the guests who helped draw attention to the previous record, and really standing strongly in the spotlight on his own! Aaron composed, produced, and arranged the whole set – but what's most important is his voice – this kind of crackling sound that demands attention, and which really has the kind of urgency to fit the lyrics of his songs – which again, maybe feel even more his own than before! Instrumentation is nice and lean – often strong on drums from the man himself, plus a bit of keyboards – augmented by some extra bass and percussion, but kept with this sharp focus that really matches the needs of the tunes. Abernathy's the kind of soul singer who should be huge – if there was any justice in the world – and we're hoping this second set is really the start of a path to greatness. Titles include "Children Of The City", "Human Action Matters", "Generation", "Restrictions", "Now A Days", "The Villain In Me", and "Daily Prayer". LP, Vinyl record album

Noisy brilliance from AMM – one of the most important avant acts of the 60s – and an incredible bridge between jazz, psych, and 20th Century classical worlds! The group were a powerhouse on the London scene of the middle of the decade – reportedly a huge influence on Pink Floyd, too – and all these many years later, there's hardly been a record to match the power of this amazing debut – a record that was even more equally amazingly released by Elektra Records on its first pressing! These guys may have made the most noise anyone had in the studio for this set – and that even includes the Velvet Underground, and any 60s electronic musician too – and the legendary lineup features Cornelius Cardew on piano, cello, and transistor radio; Lou Gare on tenor and violin; Eddie Prevost on drums, xylophone, bells, and cymbals; Keith Rowe on guitar and transistor radio; and Lawrence Sheaff on cello, accordion, clarinet, and one more transistor radio. Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

Albert AylerNew Grass/Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
Late greatness from Albert Ayler – two Impulse albums back to back! New Grass is one of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not died a mysterious young death! Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe is a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Marcel Azzola is a great French talent on the musette (aka accordion) – one who glides along with the best breezy modes of bigger postwar players like Gus Viseur or Jo Privat! The distinction of musette here is important – as this isn't the clunky instrument of the polka scene, nor the snoozy sound of Lawrence Welk – but instead that lively, spontaneous mode that instantly evokes the streets of Paris and the darker reaches of the left bank in the 50s – a scene that Marcel helped shape in his work with Jacques Brel, Juliette Greco, and others. The tunes here are all instrumentals – and include many original French numbers, plus a few standards – all with a vibe that's a lot hipper than the look of hte cover. 3CD set features 60 tracks in all, plus notes in French and English! Skyhorse, 2018. New Copy ... $6.99 18.99
A nicely expanded version of this important look at the career and music of Aretha Franklin – one that was first published at the end of the 80s, but which has been refined over the years to follow her changing career – and updated in this final edition, which covers the last decade of Aretha's time on this planet! Mark Bego doesn't pull any punches in his examination of Franklin – and while he clearly loves Aretha's music, he also gets at all the challenges she faced over the years – including some of the behind the scenes drama that impacted her music. The book is 430 pages, softcover, with a full color photo section in the middle, and a discography at the end. Book

Peter BenjaminsonMary Wells – The Tumultuous Life Of Motown's First Superstar (hardcover) ... Book
Chicago Review Press, 2012. New Copy ... $4.99 29.95
A stunning look at the great Mary Wells – one of Motown's first female acts of the 60s, and one of the decade's most important early soul figures as well! Mary's work on record is very well-known, but the story behind the music is completely different, and surprisingly dark at times – a tale of a talented artist often caught between larger corporate forces, and personal antagonists as well – not to mention her own personal demons. Peter Benjaminson does a great job of getting at all these details without being overly sensational – and he works in lots of wonderful personal recollections from friends and colleagues who really help illuminate the more private moments. The book is over 300 pages, hardcover, with some black and white photos. Book

Cheap Thrills, maybe – but they cut deeply and last forever! This is one of greatest albums by Big Brother & The The Holding Company – and it's also one of the most important in cementing the legacy of singer Janis Joplin. ✨✧ BilalAirtight's Revenge ... CD
Plug Research, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
A masterpiece from Bilal – the record we knew he had in him all this time since 1st Born Second came out nearly a decade prior! Earlier in his career, Bilal was one of those distinct voices you'd hear assisting myriad singers and MCs on their singles, someone you knew should be a superstar in his own right. Whether or not he ever reaches that status in popularity or in financial rewards, here he's delivered what might be the soul/R&B album of the year for 2010. We'd hasten to compare him to anyone else out there, but there's a boundless sense of creativity that begs comparison to Erykah Badu, in spirit if not in the sound. Much of the album is co-produced by Steve Mckie, with live instrumentation that gives it a funky psychedelic soul feel: live drums, beats and effects, Moog, keys, synths, guitars and bass. The other collaborators in the production booth – Shafiq Husayn, Nottz, 88 Keys – all clearly share Bilal's vision, as we hear nothing that sounds like a concession to anything or anyone. Lyrically, Bilal deals with matters of grave importance and more intimate personal truths, but the adventurousness and soulfulness of the music give it all a unified feel. We could go on and on about this one, kids. Don't pass it up! Includes "Cake & Eat It Too", "Restart", "All Matter", "Flying", "Levels", "Little One", "Move On", "Robots", "The Dollar", "Who Are You" and "Think Over". CD

Ruben BladesBohemio Y Poeta (remastered edition) ... CD
Fania, Mid 70s. Used ... $6.99
A collection of important early work by Ruben Blades – and easily one of the best examples of his tremendous talents in the 70s! The title is very well put, as Blades is both poet and bohemian on the record – hitting themes that are both personal and political in a way that other Latin singers would never touch, and handled here with arrangements that bring in not only a bit of jazz, but also some deeper shadings of color and tone that sparkle with almost soundtrack-like sophistication. Many titles are relatively longish, especially when compared to the work of his contemporaries, and titles include "Juan Pachanga", "Sin Tu Carino", "Paula C", "Pablo Pueblo", "La Mora", and "Canto Abacua". A-Side, 2015. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A beautiful tribute to the music of George Russell – the important pianist and composer who's music was an early inspiration to the great Ran Blake – who also developed a lifelong friendship with Russell as well! The setting is a perfect illustration of Russell's music heard through the moodier ears of Blake – especially on some of the solo or duo tracks, which are very much in a more familiar Ran Blake style. The larger group tracks, though, also come as a great surprise – really showing an understanding of the unique way that Russell could put a group together – with a lineup that includes trumpet, trombone, tenor, guitar, violin, drums, and percussion. There's a few electric piano numbers from Blake – and titles include "Alice Norbury", "Living Time", "Jack's Blues", "Stratusphunk", "Lonely Place", "Ezz Thetic", "Vertical Form VI", and "Ballad Of Hix Blewitt". One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". ✨✧ Art BlakeyMosaic ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". CD

Art Blakey had one of the greatest versions of the Jazz Messengers ever during the year of 1959 – and he must have known it, too – as he took the combo around the world to display their mighty talents! This album's a live performance from Stockholm during the pivotal year – one that stands as a brilliant companion to the classic Blue Note dates cut by the group at the time – but which also shows them not only stretching out a lot more in concert, but also really taking a lot of liberties with their solos – especially on the part of the young Lee Morgan on trumpet and Wayne Shorter on tenor – both very important elements of the Messengers! The rest of the group features Walter Davis Jr on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass, and of course Blakey on drums – and titles include "Blues March", "The Summitt", "Lester Left Town", "Along Cam Betty", and "Night In Tunisia". The landmark debut of Mary J Blige – a record that not only did a great job of blending underground hip hop and mainstream soul sensibilities – but maybe also opened the door for the Neo Soul revolution to come! Mary comes on here with a fresh new vision in female soul – one that's informed by the youth and upfront energy of the hip hop female MCs that preceded her – but with a depth that also makes Blige sort of the new Aretha Franklin for the end of the century – a deep soul singer, but one who's equally at home in the streets and the studio. Important production is by a young Sean Combs – some of his first great work on record – and the set also features guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Little Shawn, Grand Puba, Erick Sermon, and CL Smooth. Titles include "Real Love", "Sweet Thing", "Love No Limit", "You Remind Me", "Reminisce", "What's The 411", "I Don't Want To Do Anything", "Changes I've Been Going Through", "Slow Down", and "My Love". Fantastic work from Lo Borges – the legendary Brazilian singer that we've loved since his first "corner club" work with Milton Nascimento in the 70s – and who looks as if he hasn't aged a bit in the photo included with the album! Borges was always one of the strongest Brazilian songwriters of his generation – and a sophisticated, subtle singer whose approach was always just right for his words – an approach that hasn't changed a bit, as Lo works here with older musical partner Nelson Angelo, whose help was so important on his first self-titled album from 1972! Backing is by a small group, nicely under-produced – and all songs are originals by Borges and Angelo, with titles that include "Rio Da Lua", "Profeta, "No Caminho", "Em Outras Cancoes", "Foto 3 x 4", "Antes Do Tempo", and "Partimos". An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Matthews adds in lots of psych-influenced guitar – used very different than the scratching riffs of the other JB material of the late 60s – in ways that almost make the record a second chapter to Dave's Grodeck Whipperjenny album – a gritty blend of funk, soul, and psych – all with some nice touches by the James Brown Band! All tracks are co-written by Brown and Matthews, and all are instrumental – and titles include "Can Mind", "Don't Mind", "Bob Scoward", and "Just Enough Room for Storage". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Burrell & Bob StewartCrave Play The Music Of Jelly Roll Morton & Dave Burrell ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 1994. New Copy ... $22.99
A really unusual, completely wonderful album from pianist Dave Burrell – a live performance done around the same time as a studio session of the music of Jelly Roll Morton – but with a very different vibe! The difference here is Bob Stewart – who plays tuba with a deftness that's breathtaking – sometimes using the instrument in the same bass rhythm mode that it had in early days of jazz, before the string bass came into play – other times working out a bolder solo voice that's completely mesmerizing – even more so than some of Stewart's important avant jazz recordings in the 80s. The pair are wonderful on the three Jelly Roll Morton titles on the set – "New Orleans Blues", "The Crave", and "Spanish Swat" – all nice and long – then hit a greater sense of variety of the Burrell compositions "Popolo Paniolo", "Pua Mae Ole", and "I Am His Brother". Blue Note, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Donald Byrd's last Blue Note album with fusion genius Larry Mizell – and a doozy! The record builds off the style of previous Byrd/Mizell outings – like Places & Spaces, Street Lady, and Black Byrd – mixing together a similar blend of heavy rhythms, keyboards, and sweet funky trumpet licks from Donald. The sound here's a bit tighter than on some of the previous records – showing Mizell as an emerging soul genius, soon to click big on some very important R&B outings of the late 70s. Donald's working with a great group – and gets help from the likes of Patrice Rushen, Gary Bartz, David T. Walker, and Alphonze Mouzon – all of whom fit in with the funky program to really kick out some nice grooves! Titles include "Return Of the King", "Dance Band", "Wild Life", "Science Funktion", and "Onward Til Morning". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Camberwell NowEP Collection (Meridian/Greenfingers) (with bonus download) ... LP
Modern Classics/Light In The Attic, Mid 80s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great LP package that brings together the two important EP releases from Camberwell Now – that excellent group formed by Charles Hayward after the dissolution of This Heat! The first half of the set is from Meridian – the group's first effort, and a wonderful batch of music that kind of takes an earlier Brit prog sound into the post-punk years – a bit like some of Robert Wyatt's material of the time, as are the vocals – but with maybe more of the sense of sound and texture that you'd expect from Hayward! Overall, the music is far less rhythmic than his previous efforts – but that's what makes it great – almost a weirder abstraction of sounds you might hear on Factory Records. Titles include "Cutty Sark", "Trade Winds", "Splash", and "Pearl Divers". Greenfingers is the last recorded material from Camberwell Now – an EP released in 1987, but one with a sound that feels much more like the UK indie scene of 5 years before – especially that point when groups were breaking past straighter punk, and really trying to integrate some new ideas with their music. There's definitely a continuation of the Robert Wyatt vibe – on both the vocal performance, and some of the moodier electronics – and titles include "Greenfingers", "Element Unknown", "Know How", and "Mystery Of The Fence". Candoli Brothers SextetJazz Horizons (Brothers Candoli/Bell Book & Candoli) ... CD
Dot/Lonehill (Spain), 1957/1958. Used ... $9.99
2 rare Dot albums by the team of Pete & Conte Candoli – both brothers, and both important trumpeters in the west coast scene of the 50s! The first 11 tracks on the set feature the pair working with rhythm from Jimmy Rowles on piano, Howard Roberts on guitar, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Alvin Stoller on drums – all playing short, but to-the-point tunes that showcase the twin-solo talents of the players nicely! The pair make for a small horn section of their own on the ensemble passages – then break out nicely into differently-flavored solos for each tune. Titles include "Exodus In Jazz", "Disc-Location", "Fascinatin Rhythm", "Rockin Boogie", and "Pe-Con". Next up are 10 more tunes from the album Bell Book & Candoli – released to coincide with the brothers' appearance in the film Bell, Book, & Candle, where they worked in a small jazz combo fronted by Jack Lemmon (as a warlock!) on bongos! The style of the tracks is similar to those in the film – two trumpets up front, with groovy beat-era style backing that has a guitar echoing out in cool ways that give the tracks more of an edge than some of the brothers' other work from the time. The group's virtually the same as on the first sessions on the CD – except that Barney Kessel replaces Howard Roberts on guitar. Tracks include "Bell Book & Candoli", "Hey Bellboy", "Pagoda", "Night Walk", "Spanish Carnival", and "I May Be Wrong". CD

✨✧ Sara & Maybelle CarterSara & Maybelle Carter (Historic Reunion/Living Legend) ... CD
Columbia/Bear Family (Germany), 1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two 60s gems back to back – from a time when the world was rediscovering the talents of the original Carter Family! First up is An Historic Reunion – a record that definitely deserves its title – a fantastic reunion of two key members of the Carter Family trio – back together on record for the first time in over 20 years! The record's got a wonderfully upfront, unadorned quality – as the songs just feature Sara Carter on vocals and autoharp, and Maybelle Carter on guitar and vocals – with maybe just some slight vocalizations from Joe Carter to mix things up in the background! Maybelle takes the lead on most numbers with this raspy-voiced style that's completely mindblowing – haunting, but very powerful, maybe more so than on the original Carter Family records – as if she's packing decades more pain and experience into her interpretation of songs that include "Higher Ground", "The Hand That Rocked The Cradle", "Farther On", "While The Band Is Playing Dixie", and "Happiest Days Of All". The set also features the solo Living Legend album from Maybelle Carter – a fantastic album from this important member of the Carter Family – returned to the spotlight in the 60s, thanks to new interest in her vocal and instrumental talents from a whole generation of younger musicians! The set's taken in a relatively laidback way – production that's more folk than country, although Maybelle sings very much in the spirit of the latter – while also doing a hell of a job on both guitar and autoharp, and working with usually just a bit of extra guitar, bass, and drums. The set features a few Carter Family classics, redone, and a few by Maybelle herself – and even one by Johnny Cash, who was most likely one of the reasons that Maybelle got to record for Columbia at the time. Titles include "We All Miss You Joe", "I Told Them What You're Fighting For", "Kitty Puss", "There's A Mother Always Waiting", "Give Me Your Love & I'll Give You Mine", "A Letter From Home", and "Charlie Brooks". These are the tunes that really put Charles on the map – and many have a raw, vibrant quality that's a lot more R&B than some of his later work – hard-burning numbers that move at a mighty quick pace – mixed with a few that show the jazzier approach in years to come. Titles include "Sinner's Prayer", "Mess Around", "Greenbacks", "I Got A Woman", "A Fool For You", "Losing Hand", "Ain't That Love", "Drown In My Own Tears", "This Little Girl Of Mine", and "Don't You Know". ✨✧ Don CherrySymphony For Improvisers ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first truly important records from Don Cherry as a leader – and an amazingly well-crafted session that brings together ideas from his early years with Ornette, and expands them with some of the freedoms he was learning from the European scene! The record boasts a format and lineup that's quite unusual for Blue Note at the time – 2 side-long "suite" tracks, performed by a group that features Cherry on cornet, Pharoah Sanders on tenor and piccolo, Karl Berger on vibes and piano, Gato Barbieri on tenor, Ed Blackwell on drums, and both Jean-Francois Jenny- Clark and Henry Grimes on bass! There's a fair bit of room for creative improvising on the session, but the overall album's a bit more structured than contemporary free jazz outings – and clearly shows the mark of Cherry's interpolation of styles at the time. Two long suites are entitled "Symphony For Improvisers" and "Manhattan Cry" – with shorter passages that include "Nu Creative Love", "Infant Happiness", "Manhattan Cry", and "Lunatic". Imperial/BGO (UK), 1968/1969/1970. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99
A quartet of albums by Classics IV – a fantastic late 60s group who hardly ever get their full due! The group's forever remembered for their huge title hit on the first album – but throughout these records they maintain a really wonderful sound – all while also pushing themselves a bit too! Lead singer Dennis Yost has this great raspy style – and maybe brings more soul to their records at times than you might expect, with a quality that's nicely balanced by the later sunshine pop elements that sometimes make these guys an important precursor to the soft rock in years to come. There's a nice sense of evolution over the three years in which these albums were recorded – and the production just seems to get groovier and groovier – on titles that include their classic "Spooky" – plus "You Are My Sunshine", "Goin Out Of My Head", "Bus Stop", "Poor People", "Book A Trip", "Traces", "Soul Train", "Bed Of Roses", "Stormy", "24 Hours Of Loneliness", "Pick Up The Pieces", "Where Did All The Good Times Go", "Traffic Jam", "Rainy Day", "Free", "Mamas & Papas", "Nobody Loves You But Me", "The Funniest Thing", and "The Letter". Thames & Hudson (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $6.99 35.00
A stunningly vivid portrait of New York in the postwar years – a time when the city's already-strong hold on American culture was taken to its apex – as the city became home to some of the most important artists, actors, writers, and creative forces of the generation! The book is filled with amazing photographs – hundreds of images, in both black and white and color, laid out alongside equally rich text, in three large sections that look at the visual arts, the performing arts, and architecture and design. Modern visual artists get especially strong placement in the book, as does the groundbreaking architecture in the city during the 50s – but there's also some great sections on dance, theater, and nightlife too – and the whole thing's more than large enough to cover everything at a reasonably strong level. The layout and design of the book are great – and the choice of images is superb – and the whole thing is super-heavy, hardcover, and a whopping 400 pages in all. Book

A stunning portrait of one of the best young artists on the New York Latin scene at the end of the 60s! Johnny Colon initially cooked up a groove with a run of some really important Latin Soul albums – and here, as the 70s come on, he's moving into smoking salsa territory with all the youthful energy of his earlier work! There's a really dark edge to the tracks – lots of downturning blue notes on piano and trombone, making for a sound that's tremendously compelling. Prestige/Craft, 1958. New Copy 5CD ... $66.99 74.99
A fantastic document of this breakout moment for the legendary John Coltrane – every single Prestige Records recording from the important year of 1958, a time when the tenorist really emerged as a leader, while still also sharing his talents in collaborative sessions too! This isn't the Coltrane of Love Supreme, but there's already a majestically soulful, deeply personal conception taking place here – one that makes Coltrane's sound instantly compelling, with long solos throughout that really show the spark of his young imagination at work! Much of this material was recorded during the year, then released later in many cut-up packages – so the set marks the first time that these tracks have all been put together properly, along with some of the "blowing session" or co-leader dates for Prestige from the time – and while many feature the core trio of pianist Red Garland on rhythm, other musicians include Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb and Art Taylor on drums. The set features 37 tracks in all, wrapped up in a really beautiful package with a huge book that collects rare photos and other ephemera, and very extensive liner notes from Ashley Khan – who's written extensively on Coltrane. Titles include "Lush Life", "Nakatini Serenade", "Theme For Ernie", "I Never Knew", "Big Paul", "Freight Trane", "Invitation", "Love Thy Neighbor", "Bahia", "Goldsboro Express", "Lyresto", "You Say You Care", "Russian Lullaby", "The Believer", "I See Your Face Before Me", and "Little Melonae". John ColtraneLive At The Village Vanguard – Master Takes ... CD
Impulse, 1961. Used ... $6.99
Sublimely spiritual work from the great John Coltrane – a live album, but one that's easily one of his most important contributions to music in the early 60s – and a set that we'd rank right up there with his best studio sides for Impulse or Atlantic Records at the time! The group here features McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – plus the very important addition of Eric Dolphy on the leadoff tune "Spiritual" – a number that features Dolphy on bass clarinet alongside Coltrane's tremendous tenor, as both players open up on extended solos that take the tune to nearly 14 minutes in length! Other numbers omit Dolphy, but are still totally great – and Coltrane picks up the soprano sax for a classic reading of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" – and the group shifts slightly for the freer "Chasin The Trane", a 16 minute romp done with only tenor sax, drums, and bass – the latter of which is handled here by Jimmy Garrison instead of Workman. Lost genius from the great John Coltrane – a never-issued set, but one that's attained legendary status over the years – thanks to its placement in the Impulse Records vaults! The performance is amazing – filled with soul and spirit, and so much searching that at one famous point in the concert, Coltrane actually puts down his tenor, walks to the microphone, and begins singing and chanting – really driving the rest of the group on with his energy. All tracks are long – and while things are as free as in some of the other important live documents of the time – like the Coltrane In Japan recordings – there's a really spiritual quality that unifies the whole thing – and keeps the music very much in the best Love Supreme mode. The group features Coltrane on soprano, tenor, and flute – plus Pharoah Sanders on tenor and piccolo, Alice Coltrane on piano, Sonny Johnson on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums – and the group's joined by additional alto and percussion players too. Titles include a 26 minute reading of "Crescent", a 23 minute take on "My Favorite Things", and the tracks "Leo", "Offering", and "Naima". CD

Spanoramic, Early 60s. Very Good ... $24.99
Romantic Latin from the Cuarteto Mayari and trumpeter Placido Acevedo – a set of well-recorded material from the group, possibly from the later years of their reformation! Acevedo's trumpet blows a warmly muted tone over the top of the tunes – and most numbers have vocals by a male singer, who brings a nice sort of feeling to the album's bolero selections, especially on the cuts with chorus accompaniment. Titles include "Recuento", "Alma Herida", "Llena De Gracia", "Agarrate De La Brocha", "No Me Importa Lo Que Digan", and "Fatalismo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Vanessa Da MataCaixinha De Musica – Ao Vivo ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic live set from Vanessa Da Mata – one that has her commanding the crowd with the sort of majesty that usually is just reserved for MPB artists of the golden age – at once intimately personal, but also able to project her depth to a large audience with effortless ease! Music is a mix of samba-styled tracks and more contemporary numbers – with a few moments that have maybe even a bit more rock instrumentation than you might expect – yet always, as with Vanessa, the style is less important than the lady herself – who shines brilliantly throughout! Titles include "Gente Feliz", "Va Pro Inferno Com Seu Amor", "Nao Me Diexe So", "Segue O Som", "Te Amo", "Bau", "Amado", "Impossivel Acreditar Que Perdi Voce", and "Bolsa De Grife" – plus a surprising take on "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Miles DavisMiles In Tokyo ... LP
CBS (Japan), 1964. Near Mint- ... $49.99
Miles Davis' first-ever performance in Japan – a really unique concert that featured the quintet with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – augmented by a young Sam Rivers on tenor! The presence of Rivers really gives the set an edge – and although Miles is holding Sam a bit more in check than on some of his "new thing" albums from the time, there's an overall quality here that's different than the other Davis quintet albums of the time. The set was one of a number of important Miles Davis live sessions from the period – including albums from Berlin, Antibes, and Chicago – and titles include "If I Were A Bell", "My Funny Valentine", "So What", "Walkin'" and "All Of You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 70s Japanese pressing, SOPL 162, with insert.)

✨✧ Miles DavisSketches Of Spain ... CD
Columbia, 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an important distinction to the way the album progresses.) Evans' arrangements have a majesty that takes the songs to the next level – working them as lush, lively backings for Davis' equally majestic trumpet solos, some of the finest he ever recorded with large group backing. Wonderful all the way through – and with the tracks "Concierto De Aranjuez", "Saeta", "The Pan Piper", and "Solea". CD
(Columbia Jazz Masterpiece.)
